    Tip for cutting bolts: put a nut on the bolt first, well below the cut point. When you've cut and filed the bolt, removing the nut will straighten out any threads that might have got damaged in the process.

      Another thing if you have a metalworking lathe, use that. Part it off a little oversize, face it off, put a nice beefy 45 degree chamfer on the end, and you're good to go. I get that most guys don't have machining tools but since I've got it, I choose to use it. Nut trick works great every time as well if you don't have a lathe.

      Thanks for the tip! I used it, but also used both of the nuts that came with the installation bolt. I screwed both on, then tightened them at the exact 1/2" point I wanted to cut, then used them as a fence for the hacksaw. Afterwards, I just backed both off to below the cut, filed as normal, then removed both to straighten the thread.

    I recently had my shop broken into with 75% of my tools stolen. Most hand tools were taken along with many power tools. Most were older, inherited hand tools handed down. Most of the power tools were ones I saved up for through the years to buy as I could afford. As I'm in my late 40s now, it's hard to get motivated to start over. Hard to want to even try, knowing a lot had sentimental value even if they were just tools. I have my days that I'm ready to start over but most are days of frustration knowing there are people in the world that don't care for others. I love this plane. If I had my shop still, I without a doubt, would be adding this to my wall of pride. If I ever get to the point that I'm ready again, let alone can afford to start over again, I may come back to this purchase down the line. Medical, insurance & life is a little pricey now to even think about how much I lost or what it would take to get back to where I was.
    Good luck with your success my friend. Thoughts & prayers for best results, always!

      My condolences for your huge loss, Tony.
      As I live in East Europe and have a tight budget, most probably I'll build this sort of router plane, using an old second hand chisel for cutter. And for the body, a piece of a large apple tree branch I have sitting in my cellar for two years. Best wood for tools, because being highly wear resistant, better that ash.
      Wish you success reacquiring the tools you need.

    I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Here is a way to be 100% sure that the threads in the Brass Thumb Screw will be clean after cutting the shift down. Just disassemble the bolt and nuts you use to install the Screw Insert. Thread one of the nuts onto the Thumb Screw taking it farther than the 1/2in you will be cutting off. Clamp and cut the screw, as described, then clean up any sharp edges. After that is done just remove the nut. Backing the nut off the screw will insure that the threads will be clean and ready for use.

    Finally got around to making my plane and I'm very happy, thanks! I only have a B&D Workmate at the moment (I'll build myself a 'proper' bench when I retire), but for gluing, I was able to use a pair of straight edges to hold the wood sections in place horizontally while a pair of clamps could go through the gap between the workmate jaws to clamp down to the worktop. A little bit fiddly, but it worked. I liked the look of the natural wood so I finished with beeswax. Wife was even happy because I used the wood chisels she bought me for Christmas.

    Shot the final coat of satin lacquer today so the plane is done, except for honing the blade. A fun build, even for one on the low end of the skill spectrum like me. I did cheat at one point and used the sanding drum on a Dremel tool to smooth out the cutout section -- not wanting one of the last-minute screwups for which I am famous. The building process itself was a skill-builder, for me at least and the build video was invaluable.

    I’d add a couple of slots horizontally on the top half before the glue up and recess a rare earth magnet in each. These slots would be used to store and protect the unused blade while the other is in use, and both blades when the the plane is on the shelf…

  • @eloscuro704
    @eloscuro704 Год назад +3

    I just finished the glue up and did a few things differently than in this video, though some of them are also in the written instructions.
    I used a versatile bit brace with a standard chuck to drill the hole instead of a power drill. The bit brace provides a level of control that you can't get with a power tool. I didn't even bother with a pilot bit, just plowed the 10mm one in. I could take it slow and make sure everything was straight and square. Check out Rex's video on bit braces as to why you might want to have one.
    Rex uses a marking gauge set to the blade thickness, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to register correctly on the curved surface. So I just used the blade itself as guide and marked it with a pencil.
    For the cradle, I used a bench hook and a scrap piece of wood with a hold fast. That way, I didn't have to screw anything into my bench.
    And for the clamping, I couldn't get a clamp to register correctly and apply pressure at the correct point. So I used a little trick for hard to clamp setups - free weights. I just took couple of 5 pound barbell weights and set them on the side, so the pressure was lined up with the diagonal. I had to line them up a bit as the glue set, but with plenty of squeeze out, this joint is solid.
    I also lined my cradle with parchment paper, which you can get at any grocery store. Great stuff. Glue won't stick to it.

  • @ImperialistRunningDo
    @ImperialistRunningDo Год назад +1

    You can absolutely screw cleats into your workbench and clamp. Indeed.
    But I don't have my own bench, because I use the local community woodshop. There's a few other ways to do this:
    1) while drilling the hole in the center, drill 2 more -- one at each edge. Drill the hole through the top piece about the diameter of the threads, the hole in the lower one narrower. Screw the pieces together. The screw will pull the bottom piece up against the top. When the glue is dry, remove the screws and glue dowels in the holes, or remove each end with a chop saw.
    2) use LARGE rubber bands. You can get them for free. Go into any good bike repair shop and ask if they have any old shot-to-heck inner tubes. They probably have a few in the trash can. Cut the tube to size with a box cutter.
    3) wrap the thing tightly with static rope (static rope is rope that won't stretch -- used by rock climbers). Tie the rope off securely. Drive hardwood wedges under the rope. This will tighten the rope, and compress in all directions at the same time. Be sure to flatten the end of each wedge first, though. You will want to use a hammer or mallet to drive them out!

    • @garrettswoodworx1873
      @garrettswoodworx1873 Год назад

      I don't know why you would think that. Sorry if I missed something important. Really.

      Now, since I know nothing of the situation, I am fully qualified to speculate. One possibility is that Rex is a two-faced autocrat who censors any dissenting opinions. The other possibility is that there is some sort of misunderstanding due to YT mechanics. I have no practical way to validate either option. Personally, I'd like to believe that Rex is a normal guy who does his best and I feel sorry that he is sometimes exposed to the troubles of being a creator on the Internet.
