    Nice! The absolute easiest editing program for generating proxies is Corel VideoStudio, which makes it just a couple clicks to generate and attach proxies. You really don't have to know anything about the proxies, except to find the menus where you make those clicks. Too bad Corel VideoStudio is otherwise so unstable and not nearly as easy as Premiere in many other ways. This method of generating proxies in Premiere comes close to the simplicity of VideoStudio, and your explanation was excellent -- I found all of it interesting. Thanks for taking the time!

    Great video as always Chris! It was great to see Adobe bring in their 'smart' proxies, but do you know why attempting to create proxies using Adobe's Low Res preset, for iPhone footage shot in portrait, it's warping the output file? (Original format 720x1280, HEVC). I've got about 30 tracks playing together, as I'm editing together a choir, and just need lighter ProRes formats so my system doesn't keep juddering. Thanks.

    I appreciate the video. Subscribed, great information. I have an issue that's not come across on the video. I made proxies for footage that I shot for a music video and somehow, only 50% of them attach, the other ones are showing Offline and when I go to attach them, they show the generic MP4 or .MOV icon. The footage is the same frame rate, and from the same day, any idea why some of my footage refuses to create and/or attach?

    Amazing video. I'm trying to find out if I should choose Prores or Cineform proxies though... Cineform is 3x larger the file but seems to be smoother to edit with on forums, yet I think Prores would do the trick just fine. I'm about to edit 6 hours of footage so i'd really like to know which one you should choose so i wont create the wrong proxies. (I'm preferring towards Prores though, because I don't have infinite storage...)

    I noticed you chose ProRes Low Resolution Proxy, but is there a reason why that specific one? Is that the same as putting the playback quality down to 1/8?
    I thought proxies would allow me to be able to see close to original quality while maintaining smooth playback. If I choose a higher quality proxy will my computer not be able to handle it, or is it worth it?
    And why QuickTime and ProRes? Is there something about them that makes it work better? (I'm on PC btw)
    Thanks for this video though, it's very helpful. I was just wondering about those specific questions.

    • @ChrisOlson2
      @ChrisOlson2  3 года назад +1

      You choose ProRes because it’s a codec designed to edit smoothly. Most people are editing H.264 which is very compressed and hard on the computer. ProRes doesn’t have this issue.
      You can certainly pick a higher quality, but the idea of proxies is that you can edit something small and low resolution and toggle back to the full resolution anytime you want. So if you were going to just do full resolution ProRes proxies (that is also called transcoding) then there wouldn’t really be a need to link them as proxies.
      You could just transcode to ProRes and edit with those files instead of the original.
      So ultimately it depends on how you want to edit.

      I tried using proxies on gopro footage on Adobe Premiere Pro CC 13.1.5 and these options weren't available. I chose the ProRes GoPro option since it seemed appropriate for my GoPro footage and it totally messed up my program. All of a sudden the program wouldn't load properly (some elements being blank instead of having information on those sections like the toolbar, effects panel, etc.) and the timeline bar wasn't showing up, etc. It was chopper than normal, idk what I did wrong lol.

If I import my 4k natives, create 1080p proxies and leave them on, create a 1920x1080 timeline and add the footage, will they match the HD resolution ? or will they be 4K res and i would have to manually scale them down to 50% ? • @dubefest

    Hey thank you for the tutorial and going through this troubleshooting. As a documentary filmmaker shooting handheld most of the time, I use warp stabilize on many clips on the timeline. So if you think of a 30 minutes timeline it eventually becomes unplayable even with proxies (because of the stabilize, in combination with color correction and the rest of the effects). The thing is that I need to preview the edit, even at the last stage to check out if the stabilize looks ok (if it looks wobbly I'd rather use another part of the clip or even toggle it off), but you arrive at a point where it is really impossible to playback the timeline, and this is with proxies.... It is really a nightmare, especially if you need to use parts of this finished timeline in another timeline.
    Is there any viable solution/workaround to this problem, or is the only solution to move away from premiere pro?

I created a sequence with the Proxy videos, did my editing, and now when I export they always export with the logo attached. • @ChrisOlson2
      @ChrisOlson2  3 года назад

      It sounds like you are importing the proxy files into Premiere and editing with them. You aren’t supposed to do this. You create the files, and then use the “proxy” button to toggle them on and off. If you import them into the project and edit them, premiere WILL export those files.

    one thing I've noticed with some of my proxies is that if the camera happened to film in portrait orientation (I was filming looking straight down), the proxies come out all squashed across one dimension. Is there a quick workaround to rotate all of my footage before creating the proxies in Premiere Pro? Thanks

    • @ChrisOlson2

      That's because the proxy dimensions you are exporting are intended for 16x9 and not 9x16.
      The only easy way I can think of is:
      1. Just make sure your videos aren't ever vertical.
      2. Import your footage, rotate it, and then export it and start editing.

      Have them send you the project file. Open it, and then select all the footage and then click “re link full resolution media” and then tell Premiere where the high res footage is stored.
      Just a note, I have not personally tested this workflow since I don’t have any remote editors, but generally speaking this should be what you need.

      @@ChrisOlson2 Sorry wasn't clear enough - at the start you showed your proxy files with watermarks on them ... but didn't show HOW to add that watermark in this video - BUT - i found a video you did 9 months ago which does show how to do it. Was wondering if that is up to date enough with the latest version of how proxy files work ?

      @@matt.pereirathey are both methods that work the same. This video was mostly created to show people that it is easier to make proxies than it used to be. You can make them either way and it’s fine.

    Whenever I create proxies in Premiere pro, i always lose the timecodes. Premiere gives me comepletely different ones to their original. One camera will start the day at around 7am/ the other at 11am but both cams begun shooting at the same time. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Chris, I currently using the latest Premiere Pro on Windows 10. Trying to detach proxy from original file but I don't have the "detach proxies" option. Can you shed some light on why that might be and how I might be able to detach proxies without it. Thanks. BTW your video was very helpful.

    Quick question, do I always make proxies in media encoder? Just switched over from fcpx and I still a little confused with proxies, like media encoder opens and saves the proxies to a folder then are they auto linked?

    • @ChrisOlson2
      @ChrisOlson2  2 года назад

      Correct. Premiere always uses media encoder to create the proxies. Then they make a connection to your footage in Premiere. You just need to make sure to toggle the proxy button in Premiere to enable/disable the proxies

    Is there a proficient way to cut through all your longer 4K videos and get them down to just the clips you want so when you make the proxies it’s way faster? Or do you just make all the proxies right away then do all the cutting?
