As a german rider I'd be totally scared to drive on a 3-lane highway in the US. Seems as if nobody checks their surroundings and there is absolutely no discipline in changing lanes. So glad we got a strict law over here which only allows to use left lane for overtaking... And due to the high speeds driven on the autobahn everyone is used to look over their shoulder when changing lanes...

No doubt in Oklahoma thru the cities are 3 lanes and once you get out past the cities it's two lanes but overall people here get mad at motorcycles just because it's more convenient as a rider. I've seen people throw shit at people just because they're lane splitting and it's completely legal out here.

"Do car drivers do head checks?"
Some of us do, and I didn't start riding a motorcycle until this year. I grew up with a mother who looked straight forward while driving, barely moved her eyes to look at her mirrors, functioning in pure panic. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times some other driver was blowing their horn and dodging while she either merged into traffic or changed lanes, and she'd insist something like that car wasn't there a second ago, and sometimes her dysfunctional self would claim the vehicle was planted there by Satan, literally did not exist until she needed to change lanes. No, she never looked for it. She never did a head check. She was always half in a panic when behind the wheel of a car.
So yea, it taught me as a kid to do head checks, not to take my mirrors for granted.

My mother would probably be like that if she drove, or she'd be slow as hell. My father is more like you, I'd say. He drives pretty much every day as his job. He constantly does head checks and constantly checks his mirrors, because he drives the busiest bus line in my city. Because of him I cant just not look at mirrors, even as a passenger. Its good that you also constantly check. I hope you're at least a little proud of being a (presumably) safe driver.

Yeah, the USA driver's licensing system is very weak and has no follow-up in most states. I haven't had any additional testing since I took my driver's education at 15 years old. I am now 38. I too have always done head checks, long before I began riding motorcycles. Many people also don't properly adjust their side mirrors. They keep them in too close where they can see their tires for curbs. There should be essentially almost no blind spot if your mirrors are adjusted far out away from the vision of your rear view mirror.

There’s a mirror trick with cars, where you eliminate the blind spots. But 98% of drivers don’t know it, or care enough to bother. You push the side mirrors out further, so they don’t overlap so much with the center mirror. By the time a target passes your side mirror view, you have them in your peripheral vision. Head-checks not required. Head checks before lane changes will get you into a wreck in my humble opinion.

"Seeing" itself is not the point, you have to be looking, observing, planning, estimating. Not just watching the scenery, but USING the information to plan your riding. I def think the motorcycle could have used more caution, but it's very unexpected to see a broken down car in the off ramp. Motorcyclist needs to practice his swerves to make it like muscle memory :) I hope he made a full recovery. Ride safe!

The first first clip shows that folk can be wonderful and empathetic.
    This was the riders fault.
In the UK, you can't filter faster than 15mph quicker than the slowest moving vehicle (In gridlock, stick to 14mph top speed).
And while this wouldn't be classed as lane filtering he is overtaking in a place he realllllly shouldn't be.
He is going toward an island where pedestrians cross for a start which is a risk.
He is also approaching a junction, another risk.
But, no harm no foul so glad they all came out of this all ok and in good spirits.
Did a good job breaking, but would have been wiser not to pull that sort of shit at 30mph.
    Also, QUADLOCK!
    I swear by mine.

nah, in the UK there's actually no legal definition for lane flitering/splitting. it's deemed legal just as much as it's deemed illegal. the highway code references lane filtering, telling car drivers to look out for motorcycles that are lane filtering, but there are only court cases supporting it. there is no legal definition of speed limits while lane filtering, or what lane filtering actually constitutes.

@@friendlysnoworb6091 To quote the highway code "Position yourself so that drivers in front can see you in their mirrors. Additionally, when filtering in slow-moving traffic, take care and keep your speed low."
There is no simple legal definition of keeping your speed low as that varies with the situation but if you can't stop in time when someone else does something silly or unexpected you were probably too fast.

You're not the only one who sees it coming, Dan. Lots of us see the approaching patterns as well as paying attention to wheels around us and how or whether they align with the lines on the road. As soon as they don't line up, you KNOW that vehicle is moving over somewhere. It seems like something tiny, but it's noticeable faster than just about every other hint that someone's changing lanes... and you can see it from a SHOCKING distance way.
What can we do about drivers who don't believe in head-checks? Stay the hell out of blind spots. Only approach a vehicle to cut down the safety cushion when and where you KNOW you're going to pass, and then pass like you g** d*** mean it. PAY ATTENTION glancing at tires from time to time. When the front is closer or farther from the line than the rear of a vehicle, you WILL see it at the point where tires meet the road... AND you can be SURE they're changing lanes. MANY don't signal, don't look, and don't care... BUT that slight shift from "lined up" with the lane separators SIGNALS an easy couple seconds ahead of time that the vehicle's coming over... JUST like you'll see wheels start to rotate at intersecting streets before you see the car move.
AND of course, we can ALWAYS keep ourselves with as much open real estate as possible on the road around us. Let the packs go as packs, and find that open space in between... Remember this is traffic, NOT a race... so ride like you can at least PRETEND to have a lick of sense. ;o)

    • @johnwirk
      @johnwirk 10 месяцев назад +1

Being familiar with traffic patterns is key. I mostly ride to work and back and around town on days off. I rarely travel. So knowing where on and and off ramps are, double turn lanes, usual "hot spots" during rush hour and schools are important to survival. I know where every trouble zone is, I expect trouble, I see trouble, I sometimes get trouble and I deal with it. It is so typical for me to get merged on while looking at the driver. I just move over and power out. I predict pretty accurately because I know my streets. Be very vigilant and cautious when on new roads.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 10 месяцев назад

@@johnwirk Over the years, I've LOVED to travel... SO when you do get out for a longer distance, even on familiar-ish routes, regular breaks are another great key. Keep your brain fresh, whether it's a four-hour run and break for coffee and walkabout to decompress... or you just got out of a sluggish rush-hour and change the schedule before you're a ranting, raving, screaming disaster... a break just lets you "out of your head" for a few minutes and you can recover the energy to go on.
BUT yes, extra vigilance is necessary with completely unfamiliar territory. Patterns generally don't change much, but localized habits can change them noticeably... and that can get you into trouble if you're sleepy or aggravated... ;o)

Because it's all ego at the end of the day and it means nothing in real terms.
They'll leave feeling they've won, you leave without scars or a legal battle or worse... A charge.
I had a thing last week (A preface; I've had a rough year, multiple family members pass away, I've been made redundant just as my doggo ended up with an extortionate but required vet bill, no excuses though).
A car was overtaking on a road where overtaking isn't allowed (30mph limit) and almost hit me head on.
I turned and chased them, I wanted to end them.
But they were doing around 55mph and I saw a kid playing.
I slowed my roll, pulled over and had a few palpitations instead.
I couldn't in good conscience chase them and damage them if I had to be as dangerous and inconsiderate they were being.
Best advice I can give to folk. Where a helmet cam just incase you can't tell your side of the story and accept the fact that dickheads exist and we need to be better at avoidance.

Happened to me a couple of times when I was starting out. It even carried me out into the opposite lane a couple of times, luckily with no traffic. Even today I'm apprehensive to lean in further when I overcook a corner. I need a couple of days on the track.
Teaching noobs to trust the ability of their bike to lean in far more than they believe would be one of the most important safety-related skills. We have a quite thorough training for drivers licence here, but even so I was taught primarily the operation of the vehicle, not cornering techniques. But apparently nowadays they have introduced a multi-level training, where you have to visit a driving technique course after you get your licence or lose it again. I think that's a good thing.

I like the way Dan talks and he is just right on just slow down. I believe most crashes (accidents are predictable) by simply looking ahead and looking for hazards and reacting to them, adjusting speed or path is one way of avoiding crashes. Lot of small traffic that could easily hide in even a small blind spot. In driver's ed we were taught our mirrors *minimized* our blind spot, not that they *removed* it. Properly adjusted mirrors still leave a blind spot but it's small enough that a small, quick head check will cover it. You don't need to twist around to check. But some people seem to not be bothered, or more and more common as more cars get blind spot sensors, they rely purely on those sensors and never check for themselves.

Always watch your mirrors at stop signs and lights. Keep your self staggered from other cars while stopped in case you need a quick exit. Finally, keep the bike in gear when stopped at traffic lights. You need to be able to escape if something grows in your mirror too quickly. In those moments you wont be able to react quick enough to shift and take off. Another thing to mention is if you are making a right turn from a lane that both turns and goes straight and the cars in front are stopped at the light yet not turning, if you can fit, hit the shoulder and proceed to turn right. Movement is survival on a bike. When you are stopped, you are a sitting duck.

He's following the car in front from exactly 2 lines behind, so from about 50ft of space cushion. And he's going at 60 mph at the time! He had 0.56 seconds to react to the 'unexpected, oh-so-surprising danger'. The minimum amount of time you need to plan for is 2 seconds (or a space cushion of at least 175-200 ft for that speed). So, no. His space cushion was horrible, his line of sight was horrible, his planning was non-existent. That's how he found brown in his pantalones... His swerve is fine but he shouldn't have and wouldn't need one if he had just used common sense in the first place.

19:50 I drove tractor trailers for 38 years and commuted to work on a BMW K1100 35 miles one way. I absolutely saw what the rider should have seen coming when the box truck was merging. That car is coming into your lane whether you like it or not so either see it ealier and speed up but preferably slow down and give it space. That near miss was totally preventable.

It always blows my mind when people f-around near big trucks. Motorcyclists are still nowhere near as bad as car drivers though.
I thank my lucky stars that I started on farm equipment, then car, then tractor-trailer, and finally motorcycle. I drove a truck for 15 years before I hopped on a bike. That perspective has saved my life on so many occasions because I always seem to know what other drivers are going to do before they do it. It keeps me out of the 💩 long before it happens...knock on wood. I guess that's what happens when you've got 3M miles+ under your belt. 🤷‍♂️

I have almost always done head checks. Never been on a motorcycle. I'm watching these in prep for maybe getting a sleeper ebike. Only want a sleeper because on the small stretch of 55mph road I have to hit on my commute I think it's safer to keep up with traffic than being passed by the oh so many suburban pickup drivers that want to kill everything on the road that isn't them.

Listen my man works night shift. I understand getting woken up by people sucks... But if it's the middle of the damn day you can't be mad at people living life. If it was 9pm I would understand. But when the sun comes up you need to expect humans to do human things. To loud for you get ear plugs.

Living in Houston, a lot of this is common sense. If you can’t do some of these basic maneuvers you will die. I guess that’s why they call us one of the worst cities for drivers, and even worse for motorcycles. I can’t believe someone wouldn’t recognize the absolutely basic patterns like cars switching over to an open lane, riding in blind spot, or even not doing a head check. I do and recognize all of that stuff and I’m not even a rider (yet).
