your dad seems like quite the card. great attitude for sure. it's way cool that you were able to get a copy of the show. my dad's gone and i'd sure treasure something like this of him. thanks for posting.
DUDE! I've been wondering about the old StB segments recently, always remembered once in a while they'd goof on a song and a band member would start dancing, that's what I was looking for! I was a kid then ..... thanks a million, man!
I was fortunate to see this show on a night they did “Stump the Band”. They auditioned potential singers while we were standing in line for four hours.
Ya well when I was standing there and the producer came out and there goes my Dad jumping up and down to be a contestant I wanted to die!! Hence I still regret it to this day I never joined him.
Thank you. He was a quiet man and would surprise us with stuff like this. Sadly I was only 17 years old and he wanted me to sing it with him. I was to embarrassed I wouldn’t even sit next to him. Omg if my 57 year old self now could go back and tell my 17 year old self to just do it I wouldn’t have this feeling of regret all these years. To have said I was on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson but I can’t because I didn’t. Ah well glad you enjoyed!!
Those first two ladies that sang "The Billboard Song" are way behind the times. The old country comedy team Homer and Jethro came out with that song in the late 50's. It is on one of the albums they came out with around 1959 called "Homer and Jethro At The Country Club"
@BondoFox Woah, same exact thing for me! As a kid I'd NEVER miss The Tonight Show (school, HA!) and one of my favorite moments, magical more like it, was when that guy, Ernie, would hop over the railing and do that jazz, sort of coked up bop(not inferring that the gentleman used blow, but if not, he should have, lol).
Not sure what's up but @6:06 my audio stops. The video plays but that's it no audio for the rest of the video. It has worked all night before this and I've played other videos after and the sound has come through loud and clear so...😕
It wasn’t easy. It took probably 15 years of phone calls letters and emails sent to NBC asking for it. After years and years, I finally got someone who made me a VHS tape at the time. If I am not mistaken now you can go on the tonight show website and search for guests who were on and when. If you can remember who the guests were that should get you the episode. From there you can order it. Good luck. Hope this helps
How did you go about getting the video of your dad on Stump the Band? I was on the program back in the 1970;s, and was wondering how to go about getting a copy of it. Hope to hear from chrispat65. Thank you. westtexaswoman
to westtexaswoman Copies of segments of Johnny Carson are available for shows made 1972 until 1992. Give me some specifics (your name or dad's name or name of song) and I'll look it up and see if it's available.
His wife, my Mom wasn’t with us on this trip. Standing outside in 95 degree heat for hours, he was quite comfortable in those parachute shorts of his. Yup that’s my Dad!!
KE Deas it was 95 degrees waiting in line outside. Style was not his thing. Sadly I was to embarrassed to sit next to him so I made my friend. Regret it still to this day
@@chrispat65 When I was in Cali in the mid 80's I stood in line to get in the audience. Got to sit at the very top in the back. Sadly, Bill Cosby was guest hosting.
One would have to watch late night TV for weeks now to get as many laughs as in the first 5 minutes of this clip.
Typical dad. Doesn’t give a crap. Too busy working and raising a family to be impressed by much of anything. Shorts and black socks. I LOVE this guy!

Wow how cool is that. I don't often get star struck, but Johnny is one of the few I wish I had met.
groovy baby - He would be funnier [now] 🤣 DEAD / Than The Clowns on NOW
My mother taught me the Billboard Song 65 years ago 🙂
Love it when Ernie Tack does his "jive" dance.
When I am at a party I dance the way Ernie does and people are laughing , little do they know that I stole his dance .
What a great souvenir to have of your Dad. We Patersons are really funny.
Thank you. Yes he was one of a kind. Always nice to meet other one T Paterson’s
@@chrispat65 I'm from Elgin in Scotland and some of my relatives emigrated to Canada in the 50s and 60s.
Easy boys... we have guests.... brilliant 👏 the band getting excited
I would love to see a playlist of all Ernie's "Dance versions". Thanks for sharing this.
When I was 6 or 7 we had a Hudson. Your dad is cool
Thank you. He also had a 53 Hudson Hornet. I still own a 1949 Hudson Commodore.

I think I speak for all the males out there when I say that we are really sorry the sound went out from here (8:25) to here (10:28).
Schwing!
Most of the audio is missing.
So much fun.......
sad the sound died about halfway through
For some reason the sound goes out at 6:09

An older woman with the Red low cut blouse but not bad.
