Excellent work. The results of the court martial from this incident are public record, now. It might be a nice addon to add an end scroll with how every officer in the convoy were severely reprimanded and the Bradley commander and gunner were busted down, served time, and were not "invited to re-enlist". IIRC, the commander got a less than honorable.
The begining of the stroy, the driver must be insane, end of the story, the driver was the only sane person who did try to act rationally, despite a head wound.
The 19-year-old, with less experience, who has survived four explosions, and has been wounded to the point of POSSIBLE BRAIN DAMAGE, and is in an exploitable situation that could harm the lives of several soldiers, was the most sane person in an entire convoy.
I think there was a part where Zach mentioned that they spend time trying to convince the poor kid that they weren't going to kill him once he exited the Bradley, that poor kid must of been scared out of his mind thinking they were a enemy truck chasing him
Forgetting just how miserably dishonorable leaving that driver behind was, they left what is essentially a light TANK in operable condition in the middle of nowhere. Some hajis could've gotten it, played around for week, then drive right up to a base & wreaked havoc. Everything about this is so incompetent it feels intentional
First impression was the fact that the checkpoint guards couldn't ID if the Bradley was being piloted by a friendly or not. In that regard its incredibly dangerous to leave behind an operable armored vehicle with sensitive equipment (optics, comms, etc.), not to mention the long-range capability of the 25mm cannon. A lot of the insurgents' tactics were to engage outside small arms range, often with PKMs and even tripod-mounted DShks. If they knew what they were doing they would have absolutely used this thing to double or triple their effective engagement range.

I was a gunner in a bradley back from 2007-2010. Was the rear vehicle in our convoy at night for a drive that takes about 90 minutes. Get onto the final stretch when suddenly all electrical power goes out in the vehicle. No lights, no radio, the turret batteries have enough power in them to slew but for some reason the guns are all down. To make things worse is that we know we are approaching Iraqi army and police checkpoints that are regularly abandoned at night but also have Constantine wire stretched across the road. We slow to try and miss the wire, but still end up hitting it, we can't call any other vehicle to let them know what's up, and because we've slowed down to avoid hazards we've now lost sight of the convoy who's a good ~1\4 mile ahead of us. I ended up remembering that the Humvee in front of us has a Boomerang system on it so I grab my rifle stand up out of the turret and basically fire a shot from a moving bradley towards a friendly vehicle that I can't see and trying not to hit it while being close enough for the Boomerang to activate. Eneded up working. Buddy in the vehicle ahead said he heard the Boomerang go off saying " 6 o'clock, 400 meters". He turns to the rear and notices.... hey the Bradley's gone. They let the rest of the convoy know, everyone waits for us as we roll up dragging wire, and we explain what happening. Finally get back to the COP about 10 minutes later and am under the bradley cutting away 2 strands of wire while the mechanics tell us that a bunch of fuses have either blown or caught on fire and that was why no power.... fun times.
Yikes, got lucky nobody was around to take advantage of that. I know things break, but that would still be nerve wracking, considering the circumstances
Damn, they had gunfire locators on Humvees in 2010? I recall seeing it on a tv show with this bald former SF guy and I was amazed at how accurate it was. Good to see that it ended up pretty useful, though not likely the intended purpose
I just now noticed this... shame on the tank commander, shame on the gunner, but the WHOLE DAMN CONVOY moved on, and nobody thought, "yeah, we should check on that kid." Not a soul. I mean... nobody?

I just realized, if that Bradly was still functioning after 4 IED's, then that convoy commander basically just handed a bunch of insurgents a damaged but fully functioning IFV (That has managed to remain in that state after throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it). That kid is really lucky that he wasn't killed in his sleep by some scavenging insurgents.
And if the insurgents had a operational bradly they could have easily come up to one of the bases and wreck the ever loving shit of that place cause nobody would think someone would leave a bradly behind
@beerten202 worse than that, the Blue Force tracking system might have been repairable, which would have let them launch perfectly timed and equipped ambushes for a while, knowing what was coming and when.
Amazing that the Bradley was able to take 4 IEDs and still move. Shitty story for the driver, but incredible that the vehicle was able to keep him alive through all that. Hope he's doing alright.

Bro, 99% casualties is an ACCEPTABLE threshold for victory in the US Military. That's not to say they're any worse than any other military, but that's insane and pretty much does equal "expendable" To put it in perspective, if a formation of 100 men were sent to take an outpost from enemy forces, and 99 of them die but one man finished taking the outpost, then the US Military would consider that, under it's own operational doctrine, a SUCCESS. That's not to say the commander of such a force WOULD commit to that assault, but if he DID and that happened, it would technically be a strategic victory. It's crazy.

Fun fact: everything in the Pentagon Wars is a complete sham. James Burton was just pissed that his idea for a low-tech alternative to the A-10 was rejected, so he went on a warpath to make the Bradley look like a disaster. The scene in the book and movie where he's shocked to find all the ammo and fuel compartments filled with sand wasn't because the army was trying to prevent the tests he wanted (fully loaded and fueled), but because they _already did those tests_ and decided they wanted to reaffirm where exactly the weak points were. On top of that, the Bradley isn't meant to be a Tank nor an APC; it is an IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) that rolls up near the front lines, drops off a squad, and pushes forward with them for support. If they encounter a proper Tank or anti-tank units, they're supposed to either get a specialist to deal with the problem or wait for backup.

Reminds me of Generation Kill wherein their CO calls in danger close (basically risked getting his entire unit wiped out trying to blow up an RPG team already slain by scout snipers) artillery to win medals. Nothing happens because he's too stupid to use the right callsigns and coordinates and they move on. Excellent work. The results of the court martial from this incident are public record, now. It might be a nice addon to add an end scroll with how every officer in the convoy were severely reprimanded and the Bradley commander and gunner were busted down, served time, and were not "invited to re-enlist". I think there was a part where Zach mentioned that they spend time trying to convince the poor kid that they weren't going to kill him once he exited the Bradley, that poor kid must of been scared out of his mind thinking they were a enemy truck chasing him
Yep. They got the Bradley to stop and basically had to convince him they weren't enemies and that they weren't there to kill him
Forgetting just how miserably dishonorable leaving that driver behind was, they left what is essentially a light TANK in operable condition in the middle of nowhere.

Welcome to the army
Bro, 99% casualties is an ACCEPTABLE threshold for victory in the US Military.
That's not to say they're any worse than any other military, but that's insane and pretty much does equal "expendable"
To put it in perspective, if a formation of 100 men were sent to take an outpost from enemy forces, and 99 of them die but one man finished taking the outpost, then the US Military would consider that, under it's own operational doctrine, a SUCCESS.
That's not to say the commander of such a force WOULD commit to that assault, but if he DID and that happened, it would technically be a strategic victory.
It's crazy.

"The Bradley was a terrible vehicle that was a suicide pact for the crews"

I had saw this video on my recommended and immediately clicked on it and I'm glad I did since this is a pretty good animation about one of the most infuriating Campfire Stories to date
