  • Fr. Peter Mussett is BACK! And this week, we’re talking about weed. That’s right, marijuana.
People argue that it’s healthier than alcohol. They even say you can get the same spiritual fulfillment from marijuana without all the organized religion. But there’s really a CRUCIAL distinction at play here... If you want to know what that is, and also how to explain it to people, then you gotta listen to this episode.

My brother used to defend smoking it, compared it to using alcohol as if that's any better, but also became paranoid. Once he quit, he looked better and became more mature. He owns and operates 2 businesses now; controls his own income & schedule. He couldn't do that before. He's been successful and much more pleasant to be around for almost 10 yrs. now.

I hate drunk people. You are able to keep ahold of your inhibitions alot more when high than when drunk, I'll say that.
But I totally agree with non-smokers of it: It STINKS!
Because I know this, I constantly keep my place ventilated and never smoke outside or in front of people. I do a fairly good job of keeping it respectable.

In the 70s, I always got high. I loved it, but still said my Most Holy Rosary and kept a relationship with Our Lord and the Blessed Mother. I left the Protestant Novus Ordo and just prayed for the true traditional Catholic Mass to return. Thank God it has. I stopped smoking and drinking when I decided to have a family. The weed distributed now is so much stronger now than back in the day. Mostly, my experience with weed only made things funny and increased my appetite for ice cream. I haven’t done drugs in so many years, I can’t even remember. I would much rather pray in Latin and attend the gorgeous Tridentine Mass. I am 72 years old and have never been closer to the Lord.

Late hubby was a very creative artistic director cinematographer...and was also heavy into MJ use. An unfortunate event made him stop buying and using it - his first thought was "afraid because i attribute my creativity/artistry to my MJ use." In reality, he reached his peak of creativity (evidenced in all the projects he'd done) during the period that he was MJ-free.

My aunt gave me a good analogy when I said but, God made it so? She said he alone made poison ivy but, he doesn't want you to roll around in it. Made sense. I quit shortly after that for a different reason but, that was a long time ago, recently I tried it again and wow I did not feel well at all. Free again. Thanks be to God.

God made spinach but he doesn't want you smoking it. God made water but it doesn't want us inhaling it. Jesus said to drink the wine responsibly.
There are many examples of misuse of what God gave us but don't freak out because insulin has to be injected, rather focus on the word "appropriate".
I assure you God made poison ivy because it has an appropriate purpose and maybe it has nothing to do with our ingestion but it may protect something on the earth that does have something to do with our nourishment. Just because you couldn't hit yourself with a hammer doesn't mean you shouldn't use a hammer. God gave us his medicines to use, just because millions of people are using some wrong doesn't mean we shouldn't use them at all.
      Focus on appropriate.

A family member has ALS and has a prescription for medical marijuana. It does help him, also cancer patients who use medical marijuana do get help from it. God made medical herbs and those herbs are good. Too many of the drugs prescribed by doctors have very bad side effects. Tylenol is bad for the liver, as is so many man made medications. Eventually, something kills us all. They didn't really cover medical here. If you need it to relieve pain or other suffering then it's perfectly fine to take it or use it. The church does not prevent us from taking medications to try to relieve our sufferings. We do what we can and then we have to accept and suffer the rest. I have had intractable pain for 20-plus years. I do what I can to lower the pain but nothing works very well. I tried marijuana, to no avail.😢

I agree, the commentary on this video is very one-sided. The healthcare potential of cannabis is not even acknowledged, and the unparalleled incredible social harm of alcohol is shrugged off as no big deal. This is coming from someone who sells alcohol for a living. I’m a Catholic and I smoke pot, and I’m not ashamed. My mother’s final days on this earth when she died of cancer were made a little more tolerable thanks to cannabis. She was able to die with dignity while her body shut down. God bless you, don’t be ashamed for using a gift that God gave us. It’s a plant, it grows. It was not made by the hands of man.
I will pray for your recovery 🙏. I understand what you’re going through because I watched my mom go through it. If cannabis helps you as someone with stage 4 cancer, who but the Lord Himself can tell you that it’s wrong to use it?

What's safe for one could be unsafe for another. Marijuana metabolizes different from person to person. It also metabolizes differently depending on the methods used to consume as well . Edibles can be super intense for some, downright scary. This same plant when smoked by that person will have a completely different effect. There's a lot of myths about this plant. The only way to truly understand it in my opinion would be growing a plant or 2 even if you're unsuccessful the knowledge you learn about the plant is is a great foundation. Plus if you're successful the experience is amazing the fruits of your labor are now thanking you for taking care of it by helping take care of you medicinally -end rant 🙃

I agree with most of what was said, but must contend that even if alcohol is labeled depressant, it's effect does remove you from reality as much if not more so, and is likewise mockable. Drinking is known to make folks aggressive, narcissistic, say stupid things, do stupid things, promotes high likelihood of violence, get people killed through stupid poorly thought out scenarios, leads to immoral sexuality, profanity, divorce, ruined relationships, lost jobs and businesses. Drinks are called spirits because demons are known to overcome depressed or inebriated people. The list goes on. I heard your message, but don't dilude yourself into believing that alcohol is any less harmful. The joint versus a glass of wine argument has credence. If you truly believe anything you are saying in terms of condemning weed use, take a hard look at your own alcohol use and the 4 fingers you've got pointed right back at you. You'd be in a better place to win this argument if you abstain from drinking as strictly as you abstain from weed.

Be grateful: PERSPECTIVE IS THE CURE FOR SADNESS ❤ Be grateful that you feel it destroyed your life because that means you love yourself & you love life, god, his kingdom & you & that you comprehend you don’t need to be forgiven: you did nothing wrong. It is simply part of your evolving awareness: in your most catastrophic, destructive, destitute & incomprehensible existence, love, who is god, is right there with you, happily. Grace has come to you, God’s Grace has come to you …

No THC. But I wouldn't recommend smoking CBD flower- as in that develops into the same habit/need/want to smoke weed... You'll run to it to give you the "placebo of taking the edge off" when we just need to rely on God.. A tincture of CBD can be just more medicinal and as needed for physical pain

I can only attribute quitting to pleading to Our Blessed Mother and Jesus to help me break the cycle. As a mother I could not face how I would feel if my son Became a user. It got me in a lot of shady situations. It impaired my intellectual and social aspirations. I felt it wasnt harmful. Being 6 months clean I see clearly how it's so negatively impacted a lot of aspects of my life and I almost treated it as an idol. I Knew it was also fracturing my relationship with Christ.

I live in NYC, and I preface this for a reason and I’ll get to it, but first off, yes there is some health benefits to using CBD. However living in the city with the legalization of weed everything has pretty much turned awful. Every area of the city smells like marijuana and everyone is high. I get the CBD effects but that’s not what people are using weed for, they are using Marijuana as an escape from reality. There is more drug users now in the city then it ever was. Every heroin user started FIRST with Marijuana. Many people use other drugs regularly now since Marijuana has been legalized. Marijuana is the modern “soma” drug written in Brave New World.
There was a reason why the marijuana now is dramatically stronger then it once was. Peoples tolerance has increased, just like any other drug I might add….what drugs going to be legalized next and further destroy the social fabric of my city? Oh yeah MAGIC MUSHROOMS!

You guys are talking out of your asses on this one. It's alright to feel ecstasy ask St.Teresa of Avila. I don't think marijuana can compare to the transverberation St. Teresa felt, nor does it compare to Our Lord in the most holy blessed Sacrament. The problem is you're borrowing tomorrow's happiness and the longer you do that, the deeper hole you'll have to climb out of one day. And sometimes that hole is so deep, you feel like you can't get out. In addition, THC users generally end up becoming very reclusive. You can't get them out of their house, they lose touch with friends...all while they are digging their hole. Alcohol can do the same, but in moderation people who use alcohol are generally very social and in touch with reality. Getting hammered every night- yes, that's an issue. But society isn't afraid to call that what it is- an issue. THC, it's just my "medicine". Can you imagine someone calling booze their "medicine" and not be joking?

I think that if people that have negative feelings, Anxiety, depression , should not smoke weed, or should not smoke it on a regular basis. If you are happy and have short term goals and long term goals and love in your live, and that you love your life and your spirit. We have receptors that can handle a "LITTLE BIT" of THC, but our minds and soul have to be healthy and pure too.

I recently quit for 32 days, and it made me realize just how much I’m dependent on it for deep sleep. And it also made me realize just how much cannabis clouds my thinking, decreases my energy, and destroys my self confidence etc… even at a “moderate” dose of 1-2 puffs in the evening. I’ve realized I’m happier & more productive without it, but at the same time I love smoking it. It’s extremely difficult to quit. And I hate to admit, but the addiction is very real. The worst part is the way it effects sleep when you quit. Will take a long time to recover from it. I believe cannabis can & should be used for medicine, but I now have mixed feelings about recreational use. I imagine it’s effecting you more negatively than you realize. Maybe try to quit for awhile & do some self reflection & see what happens. I’ll pray for you & all my other pothead brothers & sisters in Christ 🙏🏼

OK... As a Christian and a former therapist focused on drugs and alcohol, and gang affiliation, I found this broadcast to be the equivalent of the assumptions I held about cannabis in the 1990s. If you will do a deep dive into these issues, please, stop the equivalency of the recreational marijuana 'use' and alleged 'addiction'.
You're right ALL drugs have a spiritual component, however, the way you are describing cannabis here, and the uninformed linkage to criminality, is not only unjustified, but it's also injudicious.
I was very actively involved in getting Medicinal Cannabis utilised in Scotland, but in clinical practice led numerous groups and presentations on the spiritual nature of addiction.
There is a gulf of difference between these two realities.
If you wish to have a deeper discussion on the spiritual nature of cannabis other than 'transcendence', I am more than happy to.

What about the delta-8 variants gummy bears being legally sold in tobacco shops these days? How is this different from having a Friday evening bourbon? Other than a making for a pleasant relaxing evening, the only negative side effect experienced seems to be the "munchies". Obviously, excesses in alcohol, prescription drugs, coffee, candy, cake, or anything in not good.

Ok I'm not a practicing catholic not since I was in middle school. What I'm trying to understand is where this "promise" is offered. If you're in a state that's legalized it why is it being demonized as if all these operations are not sanctioned.? I don't see an alcohol video like this. Or a COFFEE video! People are out here out of their minds w/and with out it. Why do we need wine? What does wine solve what is it helping ? Alcohol and weed both were legal then illegal at once. More people die from alcohol and tobacco than anything else
I do smoke with the intention of stress relief just like one glass of wine. You guys even used the alcohol improving the taste of argument then made fun of a weed smoker enjoying food. I appreciate the message and intention in the video i honestly love the vibes. That said....you guys gotta be care of how you present the information. The title and content all come across as a Reefer Madness reboot basically. If you would have changed the title to "How do Catholics avoid the pitfalls of addiction? Then the subject tagline is"this week week we explore marijuana" collectively we need to be mindful of how we pack up and present info. Miscommunication w/o clear intent can be very harmful.

I didn’t hear very much personal experience with being under the influence of weed either. Also and maybe most disappointing. To state that weed is psychotropic but alcohol is not is just plain wrong.
Psychotropic substances include alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, marijuana, and some pain meds along with many many other plants and substances

I smoked weed daily (3x a day) for months last year before I had a bad mental breakdown. I don’t know if I would call it psychosis or just extreme anxiety but it was the worst place I’ve ever been mentally. I started smoking because it helped me with pre existing anxiety/ social anxiety, but I needed more and more to satisfy the first time that I did it. You’re always chasing those first few highs because your tolerance is so low and you’ve never felt anything so good. But you build tolerance and it gets old and not enough. So I slowly started to do it daily. I was going through a lot of family troubles at the time which I definitely was trying to escape from, all I needed to do was smoke and be by myself. Fast forward I had a bad mental break and stopped for a couple months. Then I did it again and the same thing happened and I stopped for good. Very long story short the Lord saved me, and He’s continuing to restore me day by day. I hope I can share my story more so people don’t fall in the same traps I did. He can save you from absolutely anything. Praise God

For more medical data you'd probably do better somewhere else.
You use weed, right? (You don't need to answer.)
Pray about the topic. Watch a more medical video if you want scientific accuracy.

Kind of silly to nit-pick on a smart-sounding, made up word that means almost nothing. You could claim candy or beef steak are psychotropic because they affect your mood. A lot of words pop into our world and people like to throw them around, but at some point you have to really think about what they mean.

Like others, I used weed when I was young. A practice I picked up in a Catholic High School. Then stopped for many years, about 40 years without. I have had three heart attacks and have recently begun using it again. My heart doctor recommended trying it. I was taking slow-release nitro every 12 hours and also had to carry sublingual nitro in my pocket at all times... using it two or three times a day for chest pain. When I smoke a couple joints per day I do not need any nitroglycerin. My slow-release nitro has been canceled and I do have one bottle of sublingual around but I rarely carry it. If I smoke weed I do not need nitroglycerin. So I could take nitro but still have incidents of chest pain (angina) whenever you experience chest pain its a sign the heart isn't getting enough oxygen, it can do damage to the heart muscle. With marijuana use I have almost zero incidence of angina. I will admit pot does cause some forgetfulness and causes brain fog a little bit. It has is side effects like any drug. If you don't use it or don't need it for a medical purpose I would avoid using it on a regular basis. For me its a personal choice which drug to use for angina, for now I am using weed because I don't want to risk heart attack or heart muscle damage that was a concern when using nitroglycerin.

I wonder at this because THC actually raises central blood pressure. This is the main reason why it has been recommended by some for glaucoma - an external pressure on the eyeball to balance the increased pressure that glaucoma produces in the eye itself.

Chris is misusing the term 'synthetic.' How is an herb that grows from the ground synthetic? In fact it is the opposite. Now when you go down the path of derivatives/distillations, etc. of weed, yes, it might make sense to use that term. Just like hard alcohol is another thing altogether from beer/wine. Flower buds of plants dried and smoked/vaped/consumed are simply not synthetic but natural. Do either have firsthand experience? No. It's like listening to a DARE officer describe weed.
