  • How do we define normal, and how do we choose what normal should be? Becky Shields, and her remarkable personal story of grappling with a rare neuromuscular disease at a young age, challenges us to believe that "normal" need not be prescribed, and will inspire you to choose your own definition of normal.
Becky is a Grade 11 student at Msgr. John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School in Oshawa. She is a member of the Performing Arts program, has performed in numerous plays/musicals, and is a member of the school's leadership team.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

As a fellow 'snowflake' I found myself in tears watching this. I have experienced about everything this lady described and felt so -connected throughout the whole speech. And she's so right! Myasthenia being a mostly invisible illness sometimes makes it even harder (although I always say I'm grateful it's not for everyone to see, meaning I look -haha 'normal' most of the time). Riding a full train - no one's gonna get up for you to sit down without long explanation and weird looks by others. And OH HOW I HATE IT WHEN THEY ASK ME TO SMILE. Just a few days back I had a conversation with my best friend about how I always feel in need to explain myself to random people (parties, school, whatever) BEFORE they even get to judge me. Because I know how they sometimes read my body language when they don't know that it isn't reliable AT ALL. Oh you're tired, you're super insecure, you're on drugs, you're depressed... Some of these might be true for some days, but in general: no. I often wear my hair a certain way so it covers my left eye. Some friend of mine took this as a confirmation for her theory that I'm super insecure and trying to hide from the world 'and others see that too'. It took me a while to process what she said to then tell her: no, I wear my hair like this when my double-vision gets unbearable. Because when you only see with one eye, you kinda solve the problem.
But these are only small examples.2011, a year I'm trying to forget, had me almost constantly unable to move. Nothing worked anymore. Nothing was normal, I didn't even know how to define my normal anymore. Bound to the bed, unable to even get my head up, go to the bathroom or whatever.2011 taught me a lot. How parents have a limit of what they can take. How friends have a limit of understanding (especially as a teenager). And how life can get so much better, even when you can't see it atm.Depression is very real and it saddens me to learn what happened to her father. But I agree. You start understanding. People around me judge those who can't get through their misery and want to end their suffering. Probably because they've never been near that feeling of wanting to have it all over with. I've been there but I'm glad I came back.My myasthenia improved a lot, tho it's still very present, but I'm starting to live my life again -going back to school, having my own household, volunteering, singing (whenever I have enough energy to do so) - defining my own normal.
