Literally just bought my Snowflake 1 hour ago. I own a few Rolexes and there is simply nothing “wrong” with a Rolex. I love all three of mine. And I’m certainly in the honeymoon phase of the Snowflake, by my goodness, in person this thing is gorgeous. Funny story, while I was waiting for the Snowflake to be delivered to the store (the place I bought it from had two stores, and the one near me didn’t have one in stock, so the owner made the 90 minute round trip to the other store to get the SBGA211 for me. While waiting, I hit the pub next door, wearing my DSSD. Within 30 minutes, the guy next to me at the bar said “Is that a Rolex?!” In the decade I’ve owned watches, I swear to you that NO ONE has ever asked about my watch. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. Anyway, I know that will never happen with the GS. This watch is just a beauty. More dressy than sport, but I’m wearing a long sleeve T and jeans and I don’t think it looks out of place. One of the best benefits? My wife, who knows “just” enough about watches to be dangerous will see “Seiko” and think I was responsible. :) Sorry for the long post, but I’m in love with this piece.
If you have to answer to your wife about how you spend your hard earned money on a watch after supporting her, paying all the bills, and putting all 3 of your kids thru college, then the "SNOWFLAKE" was definitely a watch made for someone like you.
You know that guy that sat at the bar next to the Rolex store, he's probably twigged that people are going to come in and toast their latest Swiss purchase. A quick text to his mates on scooters with helmets and your love affair with your new timepiece could be quite short lived. Just saying...
I had no idea people still went to jewelry stores anymore. With eBay and Amazon carrying all the swiss watches; why would you want to go deal with some cheap retail salesperson and pay more so they can get a commission???? Amazon Prime; next day!
Noticed your story about the guy asking what was your watch. Same here, in seven years of watch collecting, nobody has ever asked me what was the timepiece on my wrist. But when your read watch blogs/websites, there’s always a story about this or that model being a great conversation piece. Maybe it only applies to the rarefied elite rocking early, no crown guards Submariners or rose gold Pateks...

I own a Datejust, and while I love it, being an electrical engineer who have worked with many outstanding mechanical engineers, I am fascinated with the GS Spring Drive technology. It is my dream watch. Thanks for the excellent comparison.
What do you think about the new 9RA2 movement? Also, in your opinion as an electrical engineer, what is your evaluation of the level of technical innovation that is the spring drive as I've heard someone say it's a simple control system to which I would wonder why it took 20 years to create. I am envisioning as they improve efficiency in the future that the movements will get thinner and the power reserve will get longer as it's already at 5 days with the new generation. Grand Seiko have also invented a torque return system which adds half a day of power reserve but they refuse to put it in the lower end calibers.

I was tossing up between these two. I didn't own a Rolex or a Grand Seiko. My nearest Rolex dealer wanted me to join a waiting list and suggested I might get one in about 2 years depending how many of their existing customers want them as they arrive. I called the Grand Seiko Boutique in London. It arrived next day. Could the Rolex have been better? Maybe, but I didn't want to wait 2 years to find out. Very pleased with the GS.
I bought my snowflake a week ago after thinking about it for half a year. It has been on my mind because of the amazing spring drive technology as well as its beautiful design and dial finishing. When I went to look at it in person I had decided I would buy it if it was really 'all that' in person, and I have to say that it was. Even after comparing much more expensive, fancier watches, I simply find the Grand Seiko Snowflake to be the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. When you look at this watch in person, you immediately know that this is something special - the beautiful finish and the light reflections alongside with the dial and incredibly smooth sweep of the second hand brings an emotion of perfection to mind. Just my two cents worth here, as a watch aficionado and graphic designer: I cannot overlook the garish, old English font on the Seiko. Makes it look as if it comes out of the middle ages! If/when they were to clean that up/modernize it, then its definitely a contender. Just IMHO.
I use mainly tool watches: A Seiko 5 (4R36 calibre) loses 10s a day. A Vostok Amphibia gains 5s a day. A G-Shock gains 10s a month. A Seiko Kinetic gains 1s a YEAR. A G-Shock Atomic obviously flatlines to Zero.
I wish GS would learn a bit from Rolex on the bracelet front in regards to on the wrist adjustment but in every other respect the GS is just beautiful.
Both wonderfull all around watches, but if it were a choice betweent these two models, I'd go for the Snowflake. I think it's a better looking watch with a more interesting movement. I'll admit that having a display caseback does matter to me. I like being able to take a peek at the gears moving.
Brilliant video, incredibly well spoken. This mans speech flows absolutely seamlessly, and efficiently delivering facts and well put together opinion for added flavor.
Grand Seiko is awesome! We also understand the importance of a birth year Datejust! Thanks for taking the time to watch and give your feedback! - WatchBox Team
I'll take the GS over the Rolex any day although both are superior in their own ways. I am more towards the articulate finishing, dial & caliber superiority. In conclusion, I go with the GS to impress myself :)
@@the1916companywatchreviews Hey guys, after 5 years, I finally gotten myself a GS Snowflake! I went and got myself the OG SBGA011. No regrets whatsoever! It just oozes brilliance!
Tim’s comments on both watches are entirely spot on, except that in reality you cannot decide “this is my only choice” but can only decide “this is the one I would get first.” I own a Datejust 16220 and a GS SBGE013, among which I got the DJ first. If I were to decide this time, I would again choose the DJ41 first mainly due to the lume and the upgraded jubilee bracelet, even though I know I can't live without unparalleled utility of a Spring Drive.
My wife has the exact Datejust 41 with the dark gray color. However, I've decided to add the Snowflake into the collection as this beautiful handcrafted piece of art incorporates decades of cutting edge science into an icon that simply defines modern watchmaking as it should be. I doubt that Grand Seiko could ever mass-produce this watch to level that Rolex does, nor should they. In the end, Grand Seiko delivers both Art and Science, while Rolex deliviers old science with modern updates at best.
Purchased my Grand Seiko Snowflake a month ago and LOVE IT. The dial is magnificent, I enjoy the light feel of the titanium, and just feel that it is a beautiful and well made watch! Great review! Please review Bell and Ross next!

I Have had a GS for 5 years and every time I put it on I'm amazed by it's perfect finish and exquisite attention to detail. The GS makes my friends Rolexes look like nice mass produced watches. Rolexes remind me of Volkswagens.
As soon as I heard you point out the GS has pin links, I was turned off. Pins on any watch over 1k is a no go for me. There is no excuse on a watch this expensive.
Grand Seiko Snowflake spring drive is full features, very beautiful stylish watch with newest technology " Spring Drive", and this is future watch not vintage like Rolex. Also, high quality watch with better price. If you want to empress others buy Rolex and if you want to enjoy yourself then buy GS.
Suggestion: can you make sure whenever comparing two or more watches, they are all set at the same second hand setting? Hate to see one watch few seconds ahead or behind the other. I would set it the accurate atomic time. It also becomes a great reference for the watches themselves and we can appreciate the moving of the seconds hand in tandem.
The correct answer is that you need both. They scratch a different itch. Rolex strokes my ego. Grand Seiko is a work of art. I have the Grand Seiko seasons spring and it is the nicest watch I've ever owned. But it doesnt give the same feeling when you wear it. Maybe I'm just superficial 🤣
Thanks for the video, Tim. I was on the fence with this one until I saw your video. Went out to buy the Snowflake to commemorate the birth of my 2nd son two days ago. I must say, it is gorgeous! And the best thing is, you can buy it when you want it, no ridiculous queues / “sold out” replies like Rolex. I was actually looking for a white face watch, the Explorer II polar, but even that is sold out everywhere! That actually knocked some sense into me - after all, I have several rolexes including a 2007 sub, the Kermit, 1995 root beer, Batman, half-gold Black MOP Daytona (for my wife). I also have an AP Jumbo and ROO. In the end, I really think this GS snowflake completes my collection. Tops it off with cutting edge hybrid mech-quartz technology, and the level of detailing and finishing equal an AP. Thanks again, Tim! Trust that your channel is always my first and last place to go before I pull the trigger on any watch. Cheers! P.S. I wonder if you have come across the Gerald Genta Gefica Kilimanjaro Limited Edition (100 pieces) White Dial before? I have one, and I’m on the fence if I should sell it.
Do not sell it.. Down the line you will regret it... Trust me ......... Keep it..... Think about my words if you are feeling the urge to sell it.. I made a terrible mistake.... To where i did sell.... An it haunts me everyday.....
Both lovely watches but Datejust all day for me, it looks cleaner and the bracelet is much better than GS’s offerings to my eye. The finish on the GS is unreal though
I have a Rolex and love it. I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to rationalize buying a GS. Maybe, someone could call my wife and tell her why I need the GS and can’t live without it. I just ordered a GS. Can’t wait to get it. None of the Jewelry stores in NY are open.
@@Heywoodthepeckerwood You have to understand I posted over a year ago. I bought the Snowflake and then another Rolex. At that time, I was able to go into my AD and he had a few decent things displayed. For a time I was switching off 2 watches a day, to keep the dates right etc. For the last 6 months, the only watch, I wear is the Grand Seiko. It weighs nothing and is incredibly comfortable. I like it better than my Rolexes. After buying the Rolex, my AD offered me a Submariner. I should have taken it and flipped it, but I didn’t want to lay out over 10 grand. I already had lost my mind and bought 2 expensive watches. I am out of the Rolex fog. I really think Grand Seiko is the better watch.
@@Heywoodthepeckerwood Hard choice. I was lucky and the bracelet fit me perfectly. Make sure you are comfortable. A RUclipsr on the Timeless watch channel said he tried on a new Omega and the bracelet actually hurt. 7 grand and the watch hurts to wear? Hard to believe.
How does the Grand Seiko SBGA285G stack up to the Snowflake in terms of finishing? I really want a snowflake but I think it will be just slightly too big on my 6.75 inch wrist. The SBGA285G is 39mm which imo will be a perfect fit.
There is simply nothing one can purchase from *any* other manufacturer that compares to the value that GS offers for the price. It's absurd they are giving us the snowflake for a sub $6k price.
My biggest concern is there is no one to service the GS in the states and it would have to be shipped to Japan if it needed to be serviced. Not too keen on that aspect.
And that concern should be a big one. Go read up on the GS website about how often they should be serviced. About three times more frequently than Rolex.
I own both although the DJ is on an oyster bracelet and the dial has Roman numerals. I don't have a large collection and think these two might be so similar that I'm better off moving on from one for something else without a white dial and date window at the 3. Would you prefer one not both, in a small collection?
Generally I way prefer GS over Rolex, but this datejust looks very slick in white and the lume is a very big plus. Great video, awesome commentary as usual.
I LOVE GS, but brand names aside, The Datejust wins for me. A so much more beautiful case and bracelet. Even the pure white dial pips the famous snowflake dial to my eyes. Yeah, even I'm surprised!
That crown looks huge and disproportionate on the GS. Rolex all day and not because of brand, its fully automatic- Historic design since 1945 paid homage by the GS also, more sporty, superior materials like white gold on Dial, lume, comfort, far better bracelet and of course a far better accurate movement than an GS Automatic ever made.
Knowledgeable, eloquent, lucid and well rehearsed, Tim is a master of clear and precise oral communication. I just wish he’d slow down a bit, even if it means a vid length increase by 50%. He sounds almost mechanical and monotonous at this speech rate, interest in what he’s talking about starts to wax and wane after a while.
Bought the snowflake this week. It's my 2nd watch, but my first high-end watch. Absolutely stunning watch and very happy with the purchase. My brother has that same exact datejust, beautiful watch as well. Great comparison video btw 👌
Two absolutely stunning watches, thanks for this great and very informative video. GS is simply amazing, the Spring Drive movement is just the beginning of its advantages that continue all the way to material used for the case and that spectacular Zaratsu polishing...I like this DJ very much, but it simply doesn't stand a chance when compared to the magnificent Snowflake! 👍👍
I actually like the thick bezel and the proportions of the Rolex, its looks make me think of a pretty, watertight oyster, obviously because of the way Rolex use the word "oyster" for everything, but I really love this water theme.
To be fair, if the fact that the Datejust is offered in other versions counts as an advantage, then the GS also is offered in different versions. Sure, the "snowflake" dial is only paired with the titanium case and spring drive movement. But you can get a nearly identical steel case with an assortment of not only dial options, but movement options, including spring drive GMT, mechanical, mechanical GMT, high-beat, etc, even high-end quartz if you want.
Feel like I’m blasphemous for questioning Mr Mosso but isn’t the dj41 actually under 40mm? Makes a big difference if true as I’d always dismissed it as too big but 39-40mm would be great
Great comparison video, I've been waiting for you to do this one. 126300 vs Snowflake, I think you're right, the Snowflake has the advantage. But if you up the ante and pit 126334 vs Snowflake, IMO that iconic Rolex fluted bezel brings the competition to a photo finish.
One day I hope to afford a Snowflake, there is nothing like it. The dial if almost hypnotic when you admire it. The Rolex is lovely too, but I'd rather go for an older Sub or Sea Dweller
@@the1916companywatchreviews Another great review from Tim, there really is no channel that's better if you want a close look at a watch u r interested in buying
I love that the thumbnail is what you start with. Also goodness the Rolex second hand looks jumpy when contrasted with the GS super smooth second hand! Id still prefer the DJ personally. But wow is there a better bracelet than the Presidential? The main reason I prefer a DD over a DJ with a fluted bezel, which I also prefer.
I like at 11:57 when he says the GS is so unique and doesn’t remind you of anything else, and the Rolex reminds you of every other Rolex and all watches that copy it. Grand Seiko is twice the watch Rolex is at half the cost.
The DJ wins hands down. Bracelet, bezel and size options. As well as a tonne of different dials available. The Seiko has a nice dial but I'm personally not a fan of the bracelet or thickness, also something about GS proportions always seem off to me. Make my DJ a 36mm blue dial fluted on Jubilee.
Yeah the proportions of that Seiko, like most Seiko watches, are all over the place. And it still ends up looking like the kind of Seiko you can buy in Walmart.
Have to go with a Datejust 36 with steel bezel, oyster bracelet. I am biased as I had a Datejust before . Grand Seiko is great for sure , but I love the Datejust for the lume, the smaller available size and the cyclops for the date.
This was a remarkable, detailed, refined presentation - that truly conveyed the essence of both these great pieces. Imho and related to my visual limitations - the GS just seems to have much greater functional conspicuity and fills the sports /dress versatility role more completely . A purely personal preference that clearly is my Achilles heel when it comes to choice. Both are outstanding. Thanks Tim - great work.
I appreciate your kind words and longterm support of my videos. As always, thank you for watching, and thank you for sharing your thoughts. The GS is hard to resist. As a less common and more distinctive watch, there is intangible as well as objective value in choosing the Snowflake. Best, Tim

Both wonderfull all around watches, but if it were a choice betweent these two models, I'd go for the Snowflake. I think it's a better looking watch with a more interesting movement. I'll admit that having a display caseback does matter to me. I like being able to take a peek at the gears moving.
You did a wonderful job with the technical words concerning the spring drive. Well done!
Gotta admire that amazing spring drive technology.
I wanted something special and unique to reward myself. Something that would not be noticed by the masses. Mine arrives tomorrow. It’s the GS.
There are dozens of us!
Give the sheep the Rolex... I'll take the GS hands down! Technology, character & Original.
Thank you for the amazing watch review.
GS needs to make a 36-38mm Snowflake to compete with the classic Datejust 36. Many of us are not into the big watch trend.
Or at least 39 instead of 41
The snowflake looks great but not on my pathetic wrists
They had the discontinued Seikolex or SNXJxxx Seiko 5s series.
@@zouki42 there are plenty 37 and 39 mm grand seikos

Brilliant video, incredibly well spoken. This mans speech flows absolutely seamlessly, and efficiently delivering facts and well put together opinion for added flavor.
Grand Seiko for sure. Even though I do want a birth year Datejust.
Grand Seiko is awesome! We also understand the importance of a birth year Datejust!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and give your feedback!

I'll take the GS over the Rolex any day although both are superior in their own ways. I am more towards the articulate finishing, dial & caliber superiority. In conclusion, I go with the GS to impress myself :)
Point taken, GS for Tay!

@@the1916companywatchreviews Hey guys, after 5 years, I finally gotten myself a GS Snowflake! I went and got myself the OG SBGA011. No regrets whatsoever! It just oozes brilliance!

“The Narrator”..... Smh 🤦♂️
It’s Tim Mosso and he’s a legend!
"Both" is a viable answer. I'd be quite happy to add both over time, and for the sake of variety, I'd buy the Rolex with a dark dial.
Best,
Tim
@@the1916companywatchreviews Totally agreed with your choices. My Datejust is with a white dial whereas the GS SD is black!
The Datejust 41 is beautiful, but I hate cyclops on watches. But even without that "flaw", it would be no match for the beauty of the Snowflake.
Yeah, same for me, that lens wrecks the watch for me. But, get rid of the lens... GS still beats the Rolex, the GS is just a stunner.

No no no, you got that all wrong! Its an Audi (ie: a VW for badge snobs. For info Audi is VW Group 28% of sales but 40+% of profits).
As soon as I heard you point out the GS has pin links, I was turned off. Pins on any watch over 1k is a no go for me. There is no excuse on a watch this expensive.
If only the snowflake is smaller.
Ikr
Dont mind the size but i'd love to see a steel version with the 'grammar of design' case
@@0xss SBGA299
Looks and feels a bit smaller on the wrist than an average 41 size sports watch.
@@0xss there are stainless versions of the Grand Seiko. I have the 41mm Snowflake, the 40mm SBGA375G, and the Submariner.
Not even close. Grand seiko is a piece of art
This date just is good. But not on par with the snowflake.
For some reason and as much as I want to like the Seiko, I will always choose the Rolex.
Im torn between the cherry blossom dial and the snowflake. Both are stunning. One day I will own one
Just got the sbga413 (cherry blossom)
plugs instead of screws is not a cost cutting decision, but rather, titanium is too soft to thread
Yes, I was surprised at that remark too.
Many racing motorcycles use titanium screws, don’t see why they couldn’t use them with the band.
I would choose Grand Seiko. It's like a katana. Hand made with precision and care and love. Also I the spring drive system is a master piece!
An excellent comprehensive and fact-filled review. Your presentation is spot on. I don't know what else to say to compliment you.
there are not battery nor capacitors? and how can it make the quartz oscillate?
The main spring drives a magnetized rotor under copper coils which generates the current needed for the quartz and the integrated circuit.
@@jimchilds9951 it's amazing, just saw a few diagrams
You can also enjoy spring drive in Credor luxury time pieces.
Rolex all day for me. GS fan here but for the money and retain value it carries, Rolex it is.
Trust me

Both lovely watches but Datejust all day for me, it looks cleaner and the bracelet is much better than GS’s offerings to my eye. The finish on the GS is unreal though
What about recommended service interval comparison?
10 years both
Both are great. Prefer the Rolex as the resale value is better.
Tim , dear sir , even if we are not in a mood to buy a watch, your magical commentary on any watch can force us buy one
How is your Grand Seiko? Do you still love it after the honeymoon?
@@rickjason215 thank you for your reply. Glad you love your grand seiko. I am trying to decide between the Snowflake and the Shosho.
@@rickjason215 hey, just wanted to let you know. I just ordered a snowflake this morning.
11:50 - 12:07 - You made a great point.
Do you prefer the smooth bezel or flute bezel with jubilee bracelet ?
14:55 and just one breath...we’ll done sir...we’ll done.
How much is the Grand Seiko?
I own both although the DJ is on an oyster bracelet and the dial has Roman numerals.
I don't have a large collection and think these two might be so similar that I'm better off moving on from one for something else without a white dial and date window at the 3.
Would you prefer one not both, in a small collection?
@nicoloenard is this a good comparison?
Generally I way prefer GS over Rolex, but this datejust looks very slick in white and the lume is a very big plus. Great video, awesome commentary as usual.
Thanks for your input! Glad to hear you appreciate both of the timepieces!
- WatchBox Team
The Snowflake has no lume, but some Grand Seikos do. You make your choice.
I would take the GS if I had to choose between the two but would love either one of them.
I LOVE GS, but brand names aside, The Datejust wins for me. A so much more beautiful case and bracelet. Even the pure white dial pips the famous snowflake dial to my eyes. Yeah, even I'm surprised!
If you're going to sell the Swiss watch premium on the mantle of Craftsmanship, why would you not go with the one that has more handwork?
That white Rolex Datejust is beautiful! What a classic!
The GS sweeper is blue in colour. It was made this way by heating the stainless steel to give it the blue colour. It has not been painted.
Both are great watches Grand Sieko stands out more for me it's more rarer and I think it will be a collectors watch in the future.
My choice would also be the GRAND SEIKO, I myself have the GRAND SEIKO classic GMT - for about nine years now. Beautiful watch.
Awesome Mike, may you wear your Grand Seiko in the best of health!

Bought the snowflake this week. It's my 2nd watch, but my first high-end watch. Absolutely stunning watch and very happy with the purchase. My brother has that same exact datejust, beautiful watch as well. Great comparison video btw 👌
What are your thoughs on the grand seiko 9f Quartz 25th anni (steel and gold)? I cant make up my mind 9f or snowflake.. 😂
Hi Tim,
The airking won the previous versus with the Snowflake so you would prefer the Airking to the 41 Datejust?
To be fair, if the fact that the Datejust is offered in other versions counts as an advantage, then the GS also is offered in different versions. Sure, the "snowflake" dial is only paired with the titanium case and spring drive movement. But you can get a nearly identical steel case with an assortment of not only dial options, but movement options, including spring drive GMT, mechanical, mechanical GMT, high-beat, etc, even high-end quartz if you want.
Richie P How true. I have a GS quartz in black. Thirty seven mm. Classy dial with those shimmering silver hands.
Feel like I’m blasphemous for questioning Mr Mosso but isn’t the dj41 actually under 40mm? Makes a big difference if true as I’d always dismissed it as too big but 39-40mm would be great
Just got the GS spring drive Heritage with champagne dial. Really stunning piece!
Oh my god this guy is passionated. Subbed, great video
I agree, the fluted bezel is such an iconic piece.
Does the grand seiko has a ghost lion at the case back?
One day I hope to afford a Snowflake, there is nothing like it. The dial if almost hypnotic when you admire it. The Rolex is lovely too, but I'd rather go for an older Sub or Sea Dweller
The Snowflake is one of Grand Seiko's finest for sure! ❄️

Is the diameter of the DJ41 actually 41mm? I heard some reviewers claim it was actually just below 40mm.
Awesome side by side comparison and facts, thanks!
Best,
Tim
I'm glad you chose the GS. All day any day over the DJ (and I like the DJ a lot).
I absolutely love that GS but just wish it was smaller. 39mm please!!!
Life is tough for us thinny wrists😭
If you want a GS spring drive at 39mm, they are out there.
Grand seiko for the win. If the names were swapped this would be a blow out.
I would have to agree with you. Grand Seiko is the better of the two. Currently as of 2022 Grand Seiko has a five year warranty.
