  • We convert a 1988 Mercedes T1 into an overlander camper van. This tutorial will show you step by step how to build a perfect kitchen cabinet from scratch with huge sink, a big household style tab, a sealed compartment for the propane gas bottle, lots of storage space and lots of counter top space to prepare food. Part of the kitchen cabinet will also double as base for the bed to maximise the space of our small van.

    Great video. The U shaped drawer under the sink was really smart as well as those home made conduit clamps. Thanks

    Interesting propane cabinet and nice to know about the 100 square cm requirement for the vent. If in an extreme temperature environment I wonder if it might pay to insulate that box. In any case, propane seems like a reasonable choice for cooking fuel as long as there's some good air flow with the outside and CO detectors. I'm just thinking of my build if I should choose do it later in life. Sure would be nice to work remotely, part time or otherwise, from varied, beautiful locations and follow the weather: such as the desert US southwest in winter and cooler places in summer.

      I think for winter camping it might make sense to insulate that box!

    Great video!
    Very well built, every build brings new challenges and the door handle was just a minor hiccup.
    Looks great guys.

    Great video! I hope to be this precise when I build my camper cabinets. Also love the bloopers!
    Question for you - Since you’re so precise in your planning and measurements, how did you plan for balancing the weight? I’m a little nervous to start my build for that reason.
    Keep up the good work! Look forward to more videos🙂

      Thanks! :)
      I tried to distribute the weight evenly between both sides. Most heavy is the 125l fresh water tank, so I placed it in the middle of the van under the bed. The tank is also quite flat to have the weight in a low position. The waste water tank under the van is exactly opposite of the petrol tank, so they balance each other. The furniture of my interior are also quite well balanced between left and right with the big kitchen counter on the left and the small cabinet for the fridge and the toilet (which I will build in my next video) on the right.... but as long as you don't put all heavy items and especially a big tank on one side, I wouldn't worry too much about balancing the weight...

    Nice setup.
    To build lighter you could have used Queenply. It's 40% lighter and better than plain plywood. No Paint necessary too.

      Surely a good alternative, but unfortunately way more expensive ;)

    Question on Everlocks - are you still happy with them after using them for a while now? Are they functional for fully loaded drawers too? My worry is that it might be problematic to open heavy drawer with just one finger. Any insights would be welcome, thanks!

    • @CubeofCars
      @CubeofCars  7 месяцев назад

      We are still very happy with those Everlocks and would surely use them again. Concerning heavy drawers, I would think it depends on your drawer runners. If they let your drawers run smoothly, the Everlock is fine. If you don't have drawer runners and have to pull strongly, Everlocks might be the wrong choice.

    Good day. Have you ever came across a Mercedes t1 or t2 with and engine swap or up grade. I'm convinced i can get a modern engine in this van but the engine bay is quite restricted.
    I could imaging a om606 in a t2 but i cant see how it would fit.
    all i want is decent gas mileage and the power to get to 80mph . Im now looking for the narrowest engine.

    • @CubeofCars
      @CubeofCars  Год назад

      Not sure. These kind of engine swaps are not so popular in Germany due to problems with registration and especially you easily lose tax benefits of (original) classic cars. But maybe there is a viewer who has experience with it and can help...
