If the lens is aimed (intentionally or otherwise) at the sun, it will focus a spot of intense light on the shutter, which will burn a hole in it. To avoid this in future, keep a cap on the lens when not shooting.
You tried the (in my opinion) best Leica. It's nothing special, it's just so simple and satisfying to use. Sadly, the Voigtländer lenses don't really compare to a classic summicron or any asph, so try it with a Leica glass next time and you'll really see the difference (specially with color film!). I can tell in your review you were kind to the camera because you were thinking on getting one, hahhaa. That's how it starts!
Haha :-) Eduardo is sooo right! That's how it always starts :-) As I said in my video: the Leica was the one camera I never wanted to want ... Well I still keep convincing myself that buying a Leica is investing not spending money ( ya, feels better this way) ;-)
In addition to the Voigtländer (40/1.4) alternative to the Leitz Summicron, there is another 40mm M mount lens: the highly regarded Minolta Rokkor 40/2 made specifically for the (Leica aka Leitz/Minolta) CL and its successor the Minolta CLE. ¿ How does the Rokkor lens compare to the Summicron?
Was fun shooting your Bessa r2a! Aperture priority is great for my lazy ass haha and having a light meter was a nice confidence boost. But my heart is set with my M3 :P #mustard #leicaddict
While the cloth Leica shutters can be nice for stealth, the downfall is that walking around with it on a sunny day can burn a hole through the shutter-- resulting in that light leak you're seeing in the frames here
Both cameras are dope! The Leica M3 is simple to use and if you decide on buying one, just make sure you want one? I prefer the single advance stroke to the double advance stroke. Don't buy into the hype! Buy what you want to buy and shoot with what you want to shoot with. A camera is only as good as the photographer handling it. Great job as per usual Jonathan! :)
This is my favorite camera I’ve ever shot. Everything about it is perfect. It feels good and works so smoothly. Recently took mine to Alaska and Boston and took some amazing photos. Crazy thing is I got it on Letgo for $50. You’re a thrifting legend so I’m sure you can find a good deal if you keep looking
I'm really lucky, my local camera store does lay away. He doesnt care if I take years to buy a camera as long as the money keeps rolling in every month. That's how I've come to own all my gear. From 16 to 22, I wish more shops like his existed.
nice vid! but it would have been nice to see ivan’s results too! ( i know this is about you, but i would like to know what Ivan thinks about the bessa)
Hey Rolf! I've posted a few shots on my Instagram (@ivanthegreatnottheterrible) and will be posting a few more. As for my thoughts on the R2a; It feels like a mix between an SLR and rangefinder. I really enjoyed having aperture priority but you have to consider that its reliant on the battery. And as Jonathan stated in the video, it does feel a bit like a toy compared to my m3. That being said though, its definitly fun shooting with. I spent less time trying to measure light and more time focusing on the image/composition. Cheers!
KingJvpes Another nice video, glad you like the M3. But then, no sugar-coating: the cloth Leica shutter is both a boon and a bane: it contribute to the quietness but prone to getting holes; Nikon knew this and switched to metal foil instead which is ballistically no different. Also, the M3 was optimized for 50mm and longer lenses, but if you prefer wider lenses, the M2 might be a more sensible option.
Great to see you having so much fun with that lovely camera ;-) Just one thing makes me curious: How did you get along with the double stroke? When I switch to the M3-DS from other cameras I always get trapped once or twice and so miss a shot (or two or ...) Ya, it's smooth (indeed a bit smoother still as the advance on my single stroke M3) and quick, but I still don't know if I should love it or hate it ;-) btw: it's a bit hard to see you walking down those streets, it has been far to long that I have been to SF myself (really miss it a lot) but it's just not quite around the corner. Great video as always. I enjoy your channel a lot !
wow that film store is insane, looks highly specialized. If there was one in NYC I'd bet the film craze would be crazier over here. We have B&H, but they sell film cameras at such high rates, which is why I suppose film isn't as big over here.
Without question Leica lenses are some of the best (in their limited range) out there. I've never understood the obsession with Leica bodies though. Yes, they are indeed built like a tank - but who drives round in a tank? If Cartier-Bresson had access to that lovely Voitlander he'd keep the Leica lenses and scrap the ludicrously heavy bodies.
Interesting comparison video. Would love to know what camera bag, the green one, you were using, looks real handy. Also any chance you could do a video on you camera collection, would find that very interesting. Thanks!
Thanks for your videos. The light leak comes from a hole in the cloth shutter curtain. Not that hard/expensive to repair. If you´ve got no budget, give it a try painting over it with a marker pen...
The shooting experience is what makes Leicas worth it, they just feel so good in hand. There's good deals out there if you want one eventually, I got my clean M2 body at Looking Glass for $350 it just needed service. I've seen a couple M4P's on the FB Film Photo Gear for $500ish
Great video, bro. I gotta say, I've binged a ton of your videos as well as Eduardo's and I got my first film camera recently. I'm almost done with my first roll. I went to a local film camera shop and got a ton of help from them. Coming from mirrorless and digital, it's been a fun experience and I'm excited to see where it goes. Thanks for your content, it means a lot to me. #mustard?
great review, use the voigt 40mm 1.2 on my M2, the 50mm framelines come up, but yes just estimate further outside for composition, works pretty well, the voigt 40mm 1.2 I will attatch a 6 stop ND filter, set aperature at 1.2, and meter for F10, to get within that 1000 or less shutter for the M2.
It’s interest That people say they can’t justify buying a Leica, yet you can turn around and sell it for the same price you spent on it. Yet, you can’t say the same thing about Voigtlanders, Nikons, etc...
Yeah that's a pin hole in the curtains , but glad you got to try an m3 out. I have to say that you can get an m3 sub $1000. I got mine for $800 and it's a shooters body, but it's in good condition and up for anything. Burma, Cambodia, Japan, DC, it's been my main and reliable as hell.
okay, will no one talk about the horribly grimy lens or malfunctioning shutter? this piece of scrap destroyed every single photo, I'd be pissed out of my mind
I've been shooting an M4 & an M5 lately (the M5 is an odd thing) using a Zeiss 50mm f/2 lens. I thought about going with the Voigtlander glass, but opted to pay a little bit more for the Zeiss. I'd love to get Leica glass, but I'm going to have to wait awhile to save up enough for a 35mm version. I love shooting with the M4 because of it's small size and weight, not to mention how quiet it is when shooting. I like the idea of camera swaps. Ondrej Bazelides & I did a film swap recently but I haven't processed the roll he sent back to me. It will be interesting to see what he shot. I'll be sharing some of it on my IG feed when I am ready.
I bought my first Leica a leicaflex sl for 20€ (around 23$) when I was in Berlin and it was in perfect shape not even a scratch. In that moment I felt like Im the luckiest person in the whole fuckin world.
I know in what your saying, but it is only a device like your so capture images.. I too have RF's - Canon VT, Canon 7, Contax II & III, and my Yashica YF, made in 1958, looks like a M3 loads from the bottom, 39mm lenses, and quiet shutter.
Hi, i really like your channel. Have you ever shoot with Zorki (soviet rangefinder, leica copy)? if not, you should try this, very unsual expirience :)
Łukasz Musielak can the Russian lenses compete with the micro contrast of the advanced Leica lenses? What’s the best in the 35-45mm region that people usually used for the Zorkis?
Dale Spencer The M3 shines at focal lengths from 50 to 135mm. It is not really made for a 35mm and this focal length makes no sense on this body in my opinion. Get a Leica M2 or M4 instead if you want to use a 35mm. Those goggles are just stupid for such a kit which is meant to be small in the first place. The best and most versatile viewfinders are also on the original M4 and M5. Film loading is also a lot quicker on these bodies. And the best thing: You can get a M5 for under 400 bucks! Besides of the slightly bigger form factor it is basically a Leica M4 with a nice meter in it.
I had an M3 with the 35mm and never had a problem with it, so not sure what you mean. The goggles fit the camera well, and don't go above the top of the camera. I guess I was just use to it, even though I used the 50mm more. Regardless, the are great camera's, but out of my price range these days. Had to sell my M3 for a photo gig that required something faster. The 35mm was mint and would probably bring at least $1500 today.
Yep, just like you everyone speaks down of leica when they first get into film because they're expensive, and stick with all the nikongangs and minoltagangs whatever, and someday when you try it you just fall for it.
That guy doesn't know how to load and unload film from a camera that shares the same steps as hundreds of other models... I'll just assume he's only ever used Leicas, which in that case I'm quite jealous.
I just discover your Chanel and Im just starting in the photography. Your chanel is a great help for me (sorry for the english it’s not my fluent language) #mustard
Excuse the light leaks, film ain't perfect but it's pure! 🤓 #MUSTARD!
As pioneer of the #MINOLTAGANG you should probably try out the CLE
¿How about using the Minolta Rokkor 40/2 as an alternative to the Leica Summicron 40/2?
@@marcoandres7475 it's basically the same lens, developed by Leica and made by Minolta in their partnership when the CL was released
is the problem with film or the leica has a hole in the shutter?
If the lens is aimed (intentionally or otherwise) at the sun, it will focus a spot of intense light on the shutter, which will burn a hole in it. To avoid this in future, keep a cap on the lens when not shooting.
Leica cloth shutter: 0
Sunlight: 36 burnt frames
Built to last... except the cloth shutter.
You tried the (in my opinion) best Leica. It's nothing special, it's just so simple and satisfying to use. Sadly, the Voigtländer lenses don't really compare to a classic summicron or any asph, so try it with a Leica glass next time and you'll really see the difference (specially with color film!). Eduardoooo!
@@marcoandres7475 From what's being said in the forums, the Rokkor seems to be actually better
Was fun shooting your Bessa r2a! Aperture priority is great for my lazy ass haha and having a light meter was a nice confidence boost. But my heart is set with my M3 :P #mustard #leicaddict
Ivan Garcia haha she’ll be back to you!!
While the cloth Leica shutters can be nice for stealth, the downfall is that walking around with it on a sunny day can burn a hole through the shutter-- resulting in that light leak you're seeing in the frames here
That is where lenscaps are for... these are essential with the Mx camera's...
Poorer but happier

Hello, what’s the name of the store ?
This is my favorite camera I’ve ever shot. Everything about it is perfect. It feels good and works so smoothly. Recently took mine to Alaska and Boston and took some amazing photos. Leica is not photography or art. It’s a kind of religion!
unfortunate light leak. gotta get that thing serviced.
Best channel of Analog Cameras ..GREAT and Perfekt

What’s the small brown leather bag your buddy is using?
This video is amazing bro!!! The Leica looks so amazing, I want to get one cause how nice they look!
So is the Leica worth the extra money? I’m saving for a Leica at the moment but not sure if I should go the Bessa instead
Do you mind if i ask what store you went to in the beginning? I’m from the Bay too
KingJvpes Another nice video, glad you like the M3. With due respect, your last sentence makes no sense. If B&H is selling a lot of film cameras, why wouldn't they sell a lot of film?!
Without question Leica lenses are some of the best (in their limited range) out there. I've never understood the obsession with Leica bodies though. Glass Key Photo
I got my m2 for $850, if you watch eBay closely sometimes you can get lucky. great video!
Bro where is the film shop in the video???
Jason shop is Glasskey Photo on Sutter St
Hi! I'm from Portugal . I'm starting which camera 35mm film 👍,and i love B&W photography. I 💚your videos. Excellent work 👍. Keep going 🧡📸
M3 is just classic!
6:10 Birds are your friend, not your enemy.
Nice hoodie. Fits Leica perfectly
Back from university and here we go!!
Nice. I'm saving up for a Leica M-A. God willing, I'll buy it in 2020.
Keep on saving, you will not be disappointed. 2020 sounds like a good time for a Leica rebate.
RichardvBrown Thanks man. I feel like I owe it to myself. After learning of their history, I decided I have to have one.
5:10 & 5:20 were BANGERS
Nice seeing my favorite shop Glass Keys, much love from a fellow shooter from San Francisco!
I bought my first Leica a leicaflex sl for 20€ (around 23$) when I was in Berlin and it was in perfect shape not even a scratch. In that moment I felt like Im the luckiest person in the whole fuckin world.
My favorite camera is the M3. Paired with my favorite channel. Keep up the great content! #mustard
beautiful swap mate my fav model is the M6
Basically the entire viewfinder of the M3 = 40mm, so there isn't much need to guess.
Awww I LOVE glass key!

Ironically, I wish I lived in the states instead of Guam. There aren't as many opportunities to shoot film here as there are stateside like this. D:
That Leica M3 is so pretty.
My Boi Ivan!
Can we get a long exposure part 2?
I just got a M2. That store is heaven!!!!
Bro i just got an m2 for 100 $!!!!!!!!!!!!!wat?!?!
I don’t like the light spots on the photos. I have shot black and white with my Nikon with not much of a problem. Peace, Flood!

Obviously russian lenses cannot compete with leica lenses :) but this is rangefinder cost the same price that two beers in restaurant in paris :)
Glasskey is a really cool shop. Always try and visit if I'm in that part of the city.
Why does he say the Leica can shoot only 50mm? They made a 35mm lens. I had one. The F2 with goggles. Super expensive now.
Dale Spencer The M3 shines at focal lengths from 50 to 135mm. It is not really made for a 35mm and this focal length makes no sense on this body in my opinion. Get a Leica M2 or M4 instead if you want to use a 35mm.

Yep, just like you everyone speaks down of leica when they first get into film because they're expensive, and stick with all the nikongangs and minoltagangs whatever, and someday when you try it you just fall for it.
Lucky you dude, the closest I got to a Leica is a polarised microscope at my university’s lab😂
Would be fun if you tried out some cinema cameras (ie super 8 cameras) or mabye even the Speed Graphic
That guy doesn't know how to load and unload film from a camera that shares the same steps as hundreds of other models... I'll just assume he's only ever used Leicas, which in that case I'm quite jealous.
That M3’s got a gnarly light leak but the shots were good, win some lose some.
Mustard!! 🔥👌
So confused on why the film was stored in the fridge??? Is it really that hot in America haha
Film stays fresher longer when refrigerated...facts.
Hole in curtain?
I was just in San Francisco last week
I love what you do and continue making videos and taking film pictures like a pro.
I wish I could have a camera like this one!!
#MUSTARD "MUSTARD"
Shout-out to Glasskey Photo
Nice, but #minoltagang forever🤟🤟
Welcome to the Leica family. Now young Jedi...choose your Leica carefully and get rid of all other unnecessary cameras. Only use Leica glass!
Nikon FE, AIS glass. All you need.
Leica gang lets get it!!!!!
I just discover your Chanel and Im just starting in the photography. Your chanel is a great help for me (sorry for the english it’s not my fluent language) #mustard
Wait wtf, you are at 24k?? Duude I was here since like 2000-3000 subs
This video made me want to move up north so bad.
Sweet video my Friend ..

4)Amazing build quality
5) Will make you enjoy your camera
love your videos MUSTARD
Gotta try an M6. That, for me, is the perfect Leica.
