I'm very surprised to see this video pop up in my recommendation. The edition of Matilda that you are holding there is the edition that which I read as a child. Besides it I've read a great deal of Roald Dahl books in Chinese translation. Reading literacy in Simplified Chinese may look daunting as people tend to hype it up a great deal, but I'd say a command of around 3000 characters (If I am not wrong you need to at least know 5000 to read decently through a children's book written in English?) is enough for you to read relatively fluently through children's book. Reading in a foreign language is a grind, but if you really enjoy it, it is also a magical, magical experience. Sometimes I am touched by very minute details of phrases of daily register in foreign languages where a native speaker might not even realise it until I've pointed it out to them. I hope you enjoy your reading journey. Good luck.

For Aussie authors: Alexis Wright and Gerald Murnane :)

I’ve heard of the Adelaide Literary Festival. It sounds fantastic. I don’t know if that’d be feasible for you - it’d be dependent on where you live and if any authors you’re interested in would be attending this year. What a list of very cool goals!

You should try calligraphy. I recommend: Foundations Of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters and The Calligrapher’s Bible by David Haris

Also, I will return to this video with recommendations for books from each country. I am Egyptian, Arabic is my native tongue, so I might be able to recommend some books from the MENA region. I also have a similar goal, so I did cover some interesting countries. If you have not read Gospodinov (Bulgarian) yet, I suggest you read The Physics of Sorrow.

    Good luck on your goals!
One of my goals is to also learn basic Latin. I already speak Spanish, so some words I can recognize.
I too enjoy looking up words on the dictionary, and have begun to discern words that are either of Greek or Latin origin. It's fascinating stuff.

Love these. I'm a fellow Aussie. This year I'm reading / re reading the origin books for the league of extraordinary gentlemen characters. Also reading around the world and want to read more work written by First Nations people.

Hi! Cool video! If I recall correctly, FictionBeast had Kalevipoeg/Son of Kalev for Estonian literature. It's the national epic but I don't think it's a good idea to read that one (and I wouldn't say it's really foundational text either).
If I had to recommend an author, I'd say read Jaan Kross, he's the most translated and well-known Estonian writer and probably more to your taste. Just in case you ever do get to Estonian literature :)

Breath by Tim Winton is an amazing Australian novel.

First of all, I would love to read your short stories.
I really like your goals, and share some. I am relearning my native tongue (Spanish) which I lost when I went to kindergarten, so my goal is to read poetry in Spanish. My long term goal is to read Isabelle Allende's House of the Spirits in the original Spanish.
While you would like to publish your short stories in a book, I am working on writing my own for the first time.
I also want to read foundational texts, and I have begun with the King James Bible.
Lastly, it is not a goal for this year but rather 2025, I would like to read books from other countries. Tristan and the Classics has a video on books in non Western countries which fascinated me, as the amount I have read is also abysmal.
    Good luck on your goals!

Good luck with those! Funny thing you mentioned Mandarin Chinese - what do you think about reading translations? Do you feel like it makes us miss some context or whatnot? I’m also learning a foreigner language but reading in it seems like a chore rather than fun

I'd say I'm still so early in language learning that all reading in a foreign language is just work/study, but then again, so many works in English are demanding enough that it just makes me want to get better at my mother tongue haha.

There are so many great Australian writers who aren't old white dudes such as Melissa Lucashenko, Amanda Lohrey, Alexis Wright, Robbie Arnott, and Tracy Lien just to name a few.

I would love to read your short stories.
    Edit:
Is it possible for you to publish your stories online individually (on a blog or fiction magazine outlet, like the New York Yorker)?
