Thank you so much for sharing that Darline! I get so many comments that are critical of Ikea furniture, but I'm super happy with the pieces I have. I'm glad to hear you have had such longevity with your Norden. I absolutely LOVE mine!
@@MirandaJ223 Miranda, I only use this table for sewing, as I have a separate cutting table. I use the table fully extended and I have I’ve found a spot where my chair fits perfectly under and is in alignment with my sewing machine (to the right.)
I love my Norden Gateleg Table which I purchased when the Burbank, California IKEA opened its new store a mile from my home. I purchased it to use as my art table. Now I'm glad to learn that it is also perfect for a sewing table. Thank you for your comments. My late husband assembled my table using his battery-powered tools. I stood by and handed him pieces as he directed. I am 5'0" and have always used the kitchen table for cutting out dress patterns. Because of your comments, I am considering getting a portable kitchen island to use for my cutting surface. It will be a most welcome present for my upcoming 75th birthday.
I use a tornviken island for my cutting and work table. I love it, but given your petite stature i think it would be too much for you to manage by yourself. Since you have the benefit of a store nearby you should definitely take advantage of that and go see in person what you like. I like the larger table top but you might be able to use something small perfectly fine. Especially if you work mostly with fat quarters or other precuts. You might consider a different table for sewing and convert the norden to your cutting and prep station. I personally could see adding another norden to my setup to have another station for prepping.
This is an incredibly helpful review, thank you! I'm disabled by covid, haven't sewn in ages because I can't keep moving the machine off and on the dining room table anymore. Considering moving to a new house and I saw this table come up mentioned by other sewers and your review answered all my questions. I can't go into the store because I'm shielding and nobody masks up except for us shielders anymore, so having these questions answered in the video and seeing you interact with it really helps me stay safe at home. That's hugely valuable to the medically vulnerable population. Also being able to warn my partner that the build is heavy and intensive means we can thoughtfully plan for it for when he has the time and energy. This is possibly the best furniture review I've ever seen. Also I agree, the wipeable IKEA white surfaces are great. Last year I put a small Kallax unit here on my desk in the kitchen and it's so wipeable. As lifelong IKEA fans I know this about the white veneer so I absolutely agree with you about this feature. Wood veneers are pretty for bedrooms but for crafting, always go for the white. FWIW the white also works for bathrooms for the same reason; we've used one of those ancient Benno CD towers as super-narrow-fit bathroom shelves for over a decade and only now is there starting to show the slightest bit of heavy-traffic wetness wear. Thank you for all of this and happy IKEA living/sewing to you!
I'm so happy it helped you Kimberly!! I still love this table and basically leave it set up all the time. It's perfect for sewing and I use it constantly. I hope you feel better soon and I'm sorry to hear you still need to mask. I personally haven't worn them since fall of 2020, and I can't imagine going back to them. I've had to wear them here and there to get through doctor's checkups because they required it, but even the doctor's offices here don't require them anymore. I haven't been sick even in the worst of it, and I'm super grateful for that. I hope your health improves in the new year.
I have this exact table in white also. I found on the Ikea site that they allowed you to pick online your store and request a notification when the item was back in stock. Once it was in stock, I could order and pay online and pick it up in the store, or have it shipped locally. I chose to have it shipped locally to my daughters house, so I could pick it up on the weekend since I live two hours away from the store. The table is definitely worth the effort. I did use an electric drill and didn’t think it was that bad to assemble. I do read directions, in advance ,and I took my time. I got it together in an afternoon. I put mine on wheels so that makes moving easier also. A great space saver.
I also think it's worth the extra effort to obtain and construct this table. I love mine so much and I always enjoy using it. I agree about taking your time on a big project like this. It isn't bad if you split it up over a couple of days. I can't imagine not having it! Thanks for sharing your story about it!
You're too much girl!! My husband got to wondering what I was watching that was so funny. I told him it was the girl who suggested the kitchen island. He said he was so glad I already had a nice sewing table cuz he wasn't ready for another IKEA project just yet and he's a carpenter by trade!!🤣 I have a waist high, butcherblock workbench that's 6 ft × 30 inches. I keep my sewing machine on one end and my wool ironing pad on the other. Mel surprised me with a tall office chair so now I can cut fabric, spin my chair around and sew. It's working out nicely. Can't wait to see what you're up to next!❤
Thanks Peggie!! Your set up sounds AMAZING!! And yeah putting Ikea furniture together isn't like normal building projects. It's kind of tedious. I'm glad I'm done putting stuff together for a while! And thank you soooo much! I'm planning some more fun projects and excursions for us!
lol Peggie. My husband and I were putting the Billie Bookcases together and that was a project. I finally had to bow out. I think I got in the way. lol. My knees just don't have it.
A friend introduced me to Ikea furniture when I needed to organize my paper crafting inventory about 13 years ago and I bought several Kallax pieces which I'm still using and I love them. I have moved several to times since then and they still look amazing. I've had my eyes on the Norden Gateleg Table for the past 3 yrs and that will be my next purchase to replace what I'm currently using as a craft table because my space too is limited. There are many items in various departments in Ikea that I love. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you Betsy! I love my Kallax too! I think they look great and they organize a ton of stuff. I checked my store today and the pine table is back in stock here, but the timing is terrible for me. I pray they are still in stock come December. I would love to have it, and use the white one in a different room. Thanks for a lovely comment!
I have had the Norden Gateleg table since November of 2019, and I think I may have recommended it to you, Patty, after seeing one of your videos. I love the table in my sewing room. I have limited space and this is the perfect solution. Mine is the natural birch finish, which I love. Yes, its heavy to move. Yes, there are lots of pieces to assemble. Fortunately, I have a partner who is adept at assembly. Their directions are spot-on; well organized and we were totally impressed at how well it went together if you follow the directions to the letter. We began assembly downstairs, on an area rug; and soon realized that we needed to take it partially assembled upstairs to my sewing room or it would have been a struggle to move up a flight of stairs when fully assembled. It was fun for us to to put together (3 hours) - kind of like a well organized puzzle. It is a wonderful sewing table....very sturdy, no jiggling when the sewing machine is in use. The drawers are wonderful storage for sewing tools. So nice to have the option to put the leaves down and tuck it away when my sewing room becomes our guest room! I am still in love with it!
Oh gosh, William....maybe you did put the suggestion in my ear! It's a great table for sure! I love mine and even though it's still tucked up against the wall, I know that in 5 minutes flat I can be set up again and ready to sew! The birch is soooo pretty. I really wanted that one but it never came back in stock and I grabbed this one when it came in. I do like the white for my small space and for sewing but the birch is a gorgeous table.
I bought this table second hand and it was already assembled. Love the timber finish. Having watched this video I can only say I was very lucky. It really is perfect for our small craft space. Very sturdy but too heavy to move about so it sits in the middle of the room and only the sides are lifted or dropped depending on needs. Love it!!
What a GREAT FIND!! I have mine set up 90% of the time, but it is nice to have the option to put things away to make more space. They are out of stock again at my store, so I'm super happy to have gotten one!
I love IKEA. You don’t need to have mega expensive stuff. Nearly all my furniture is IKEA and it looks good, cleans well and is sturdy. I love that table, I’m lucky enough to have a room which I can use for my sewing and I have two tables/desks from IKEA in my sewing room with a couple of sets of cheap mesh drawers and a three tray trolley which fit under the tables. This table is great especially if you need to use main areas of the house for sewing. Great review.
Thank you Janet! I completely agree with you. I got rid of several old, wood pieces we've had for decades to make space for the new items I put together. And at first it felt so wrong to ditch wood furniture for inexpensive Ikea pieces. But the old pieces were just stuff to sit around and put decorations on. Useless in terms of what I need in my present life. The new items look great in the space and organize tons of items that I couldn't organize before. I'm a convert to Ikea and absolutely love the pieces I've invested in. I appreciate hearing your story.
I bought this table last week because of your video about it! It is PERFECT in my 9x9 multipurpose craft room! Picked it up at IKEA a week ago after waiting a few weeks for it to arrive! I LOVE IT!! I can even use it as a spare dining table when I have more guests over for dinners in my very small home! THANK YOU!!
Thanks for sharing that with me Brenda!! I absolutely LOVE my table. It's set up now, as it is most of the time. I'm so happy you were able to grab one and that you love it as much as I love mine.
Great video! I bought this table about 6 years ago when I started quilting, and the price has NOT changed. I ❤️ IKEA. Best money I ever spent. The table is sturdy and does not shake when I sew. I have a 400 sq ft house, and this table is my sewing room.
This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!
I just wanted to thank you. I have been stalking this table for a little while now. And then when you reach the portion of your video in which you talk about the supply chain, I realized that I have two pieces of furniture in my home that have drop leaves. I have realized that I will actually be able to use either of these tables for my crafting area. All I need to do is sand them down and restain them. I don't know what it was about your video that got me to think about these pieces of furniture that I already have, and that are already in use, but it did. Thanks so much!.
My hubs made this for me 7 years ago, he put on a "platform" added casters for my height and extensions on the legs. I have used the heck out of my table. I love it for the drawers to keep my crafting/sewing tools handy.
Patty, I just wanted you to know that you are a blessing to me. I watch a couple of your videos everyday and you are just so relateable and gentle spirited! Your voice is soothing and I feel like you’re talking no-nonsense talk directly to me. Your videos are so soothing, enjoyable and educational and your non-pretentious demeanor has made you one of my favorite quilting RUclipsr! Keep up the great work!
Oh my goodness! What kind things to say. I genuinely appreciate such high praise, and I'm SOOO happy the videos feel that way to you. When I film myself, I think of the camera lens as a friend. I think of being at lunch with a dear friend and sharing some special thing that's going on or explaining to them something I'm working on and how they can do it, too. I truly do my best to be myself so if you met me browsing fabric somewhere, there would be no surprises. Thank you again for such a lovely comment.
I love IKEA furniture. Period. I’ve had the 8 section and 4 section organizers as tv stand and entry hall table, I put the 6” nickel finish legs on them so they weren’t sitting right on the floor… and they’ve lasted for over 8yrs! I love this table and thanks for the heads up…it may be the next item for my sewing room!!! Thank you for the Info.
Thanks for sharing that personal experience Kimberly! I put legs on my Kallax cubes and they look amazing as well as being super functional. I absolutely love purchases, too! I love visiting there as well! I'm quite happy with the table and I so happy I took the chance on getting it. It's been wonderful to use.
I've had this table for about 18mths and use it for sewing. Brilliant for a home with limited space. Have to say I did purchase the solid birch table as having viewed both, Birch & White, in the Ikea showroom I noticed that the white one was showing signs of wear and tear on the edges (It's made from particleboard). Both the same price so decided to go with the more solid and stable version, which I have never regretted.
The birch table is so beautiful! If I'd had the choice, I would have done the same. But it just never came into stock and I needed to get the table so I could move forward. I have come to love this one quite a bit and it still looks as good as new. It's so functional and I love when I have time to use it.
I’ve been really happy with what I’ve gotten there. Everything does what I need and the price is better than other, comparable items. I love going to the store as well. It is always fun to me.
I have this table too! I was looking for a 'sewing table', one that has a 'sink' where you can put down the sewing machine when done, and that was £500 (nearly $800 I think...?). I thought there must be something easier/ cheaper that does the job, and one look at Ikea and I found this table. Its been a game-changer! On weekday daytimes it serves as an office space (thanks wfh) and rest of the times I use it for my sewing. It is so easy to open/close the extensions and the drawers are plenty (6!) and deep. Its fab!
I am so happy with this table!! I love to use it, and it looks great whether fully extended or tuck up against the wall. I have most of my cd music collection tucked in the lower drawers. They fit perfectly and the clutter is out of the way, so all sorts of things can be put away in those large drawers! I love hearing from others who are using it!
I love my Norden for a sewing table. I use half as my work desk during the week, and pop up the other side for sewing on the weekends! The drawers are quite deep and fit cords, pedals, serger thread, and more. I have the natural wood one which (if you can find it) is great because it's solid wood, comes pre-finished, but can be refinished if ever necessary. It'll last me a lifetime, I'm sure! It's heavy and sturdy and looks great.
Thanks for sharing your story about the table!! Oh yes.....that birch table is a stunner. I talk myself out of being sad I couldn't get one, but I would have gotten it for sure had it been available. I love the white one for sure, but if the money is in the bank and birch table comes around again, I'm pretty sure one is going to find it's way home with me!
I have been using this (in pine) as my sewing table for 5 years now. It’s still as sturdy and good looking as the day I brought it home. It’s featured in my first sewing video. 😁
Oh I'll have to come over and have a look! Yes, I'm totally satisfied with the pieces I've been using. I think they look great and the functionality is fantastic. The pine table is so pretty!
I bought a similar folding table, but not in IKEA, but in a regular furniture store (it was cheaper and much !!!), BUT what I spent additionally on was furniture wheels, like on bedside tables and completely put the entire table on furniture wheels - table frame and table top holders. As a result, he became taller and moves perfectly !!! Good luck with creativity. Moscow, Russia
Thank you!! Wonderful to hear from a new friend in Moscow! Привет друг! In my country, IKEA is the inexpensive furniture so that's why I've been shopping there so much. Your plan of adding wheels is brilliant and several people have asked about doing that. I'm happy to learn it works so well! Best wishes to you and happy sewing!
@@PattymacMakes Hey! I don’t believe in coincidences for a long time - you had an idea in your head and the Universe sent me to you to confirm all this. I will add this to my advice: the number of wheels should be exactly 8. Of these, 6 wheels only on the base of the table for proportional distribution of weight (my tabletop unfolded is 80 cm wide and 168 cm long) and 2 wheels for retractable stands for tabletops ... For this width of 80 cm, 6 wheels had to be distributed - 4 wheels were not enough (drawers of my table are 25 cm wide) and significantly added mobility. Good luck. I hug.
@@NikulinaN72 Thank you so much for sharing that information! Eventually I will write a blog post about this table, and I would love to include your details for people who want to add the wheels. It's very helpful!
I actually watched this video because you did it on the very table I have been thinking of using for a sewing table for 15 years. They just never had it in stock when I had the money or time to go two hours one way into another state. But I do love Ikea! Especially that gate leg table! Thanks for letting me know it does work like I had hoped it would.
Well, definitely download and use the app. Then you will know when it comes into stock. I put my money to the side so it was there when I was ready, and then I kept checking the stock until it came in. You can pay for the table on the website and select pickup on the loading dock. That way have selected and paid for the item and you are guaranteed it's there when you go over. You don't want to do all that driving and then not get what you wanted. It's a great table. I love using it!
I have this exact table, have had for many years. I use it for my sewing as well, love it because it works so well in a small place. I have it up all the time except when I have a stay over visitor, then it gets folded for a bed to fit in the room. It becomes the bed head, so very useful. The only negative I have is the white edging around and the layer on top has lifted/separated from the unit. I did re-glue it but it has made it rough.
It's so functional which is why I love this table so much. I guess after years of use it's only natural it would show a little age. Unfortunately. If you are thinking about replacing it, I wouldn't wait because the price is way up. Like WAY UP.
I have had this Norden table in white for 2 years now and I couldn't live without it. I live in a regional sea-side area in Victoria Australia and bought mine secondhand from a charity shop for $20! Only problem was I had to phone my husband to come and collect it in his 4WD. At least he didn't have to assemble it! With just one wing up it accommodates my sewing machine on the long side and my overlocker around the corner on the shorter side, at the back of the machine. I do open it fully if I am cutting out fabric but most of my stuff is smallish and I can sit down to cut out. It is so sturdy that when I first got it I was able to sit a 'bridge' chair on it, while I reupholstered it!
What a great find!! I can't believe anyone would give away such a valuable table, but what a gift for you! I love hearing your story about how you find so many ways to use this wonderful table. I love mine and I can't imagine not having it. Thanks so much for leaving such a wonderful comment!
I bought and assembled 2 Kallax 5x5 bookcases with a row of drawers in each! I love them. I would recommend having a drill to put in the drawer units. I agree, I assemble all of my drawers first. The Kallax’ are fastened to the walls for safety. This system allows me to organize and see all my fabrics and supplies! It’s like having my own quilt shop! I have the IKEA peg boards to hold my bigger Creative Grids and specialty rulers! I enjoyed you video.
Thank you Barbara! The drill definitely helps!!!!!! I could use one for sure. I did buy myself a nice new set of screw drivers tho and I'm going to use them this afternoon. I have a skadis pegboard for supplies and in my office! It's amazing how much they hold. Thanks for sharing how you use ikea in your sewing space!
I love this table!! Ikea is a ways off & would be a struggle for me, but I LOVE this table. I use my dining table & a sturdy folding table that stays up all the time for my big heavy machine. I cut on a Joann cutting table that folds. It's much taller. I actually bought it years ago at a Hancock's fabric store which closed for good. I keep an extra long cutting mat on it, so it stays up all the time except at holidays.
We used to have Hancock too! Sad to lose them. 🥺 before it opened here, the closest ikea was 4 hours away. The worst part is that it’s located in northern VA just outside of DC so the traffic is HORRIBLE and it feels so unsafe up there. We used to drive up and stay over a night, but I would not feel comfortable doing that anymore so I’m extra grateful they opened here and I can go anytime I want.
I bought this table too for sewing/craft projects and it’s an awesome table. I bought it mainly for a cutting table and I actually put castors on it to be able to move it around easily when I want to put it away and it gave me the height I needed which really helps if you have back issues.
Hi Elaine! I'm really happy to hear the castors worked for you. I've had a couple of people ask that very question, so hearing that is works well is great news. Also, an ingenious solution to raising it up to be a better cutting height. Thank you for sharing!
@@anasnow4738 You would have to put them on the leg that slides back and forth or the table would fall over. So you need 6 casters on this table for it to work.
Really a very nice sewing table. I just have a sewing cabinet that I got at a thrift store and my cutting table is a plastic table with adjustable legs I got at Walmart. I’m using the smallest bedroom for my sewing room and these things work very well right now. I have been wanting to visit the IKEA store here in Norfolk Virginia but knee pain kept me from it and I just had knee replacement late July and cement floors right now are quite uncomfortable. I too think the IKEA furniture is very nice and looks very good.
Thanks for sharing about your sewing room Victoria! If I didn't make videos, I would still be in a spare bedroom, but the larger, better lit living room makes filming and photos so much easier for me to do. They do have motorized carts you could use to help you with your knee. It's quite a bit of walking because once you're in, you have to keep going to the end. The Norfolk store is my store also, and I think it's a nice one. I hope you can visit sometime soon.
@@agweatherwax1 That is what I am going to start doing also. I love my new knees and love having no pain and being able to sleep but I find being on those cement floors just really hurt and I get really fatigued.
I was excited when I got 2 heavy, wooden topped, 6 foot conference tables off of Craigslist for $20 each. I can easily unscrew the legs when I need to store the tables, and my son showed up one day with wheels for them. I love the Ikea table, but anything new is out of my budget. You did such a good job showing your table, and describing the necessary skills and strengths to put it together.
Thank you so much Dannie!! I try to be positive and optimistic, but also honest about these things. And I only share things I absolutely love and really use. Your tables sound amazing! I would not have any room for them in my house and I would not be able to easily move them by myself. I have to always think about what I can do on my own, because I'm it. And yes, it was an investment!! But I saved for it and I bought my pieces in different months and spaced it out. My channel bought and paid for everything, so for me it's part of running my online presence. Which is a completely different set of needs than a "normal" person would have. So I never want viewers to feel like there is pressure for them to ever do any of the extras I'm doing. I like to present a range of options for viewers and share what I'm doing in a particular moment. I appreciate you sharing your story, and your setup sounds fantastic! 12 feet of table length or all that width would be INCREDIBLE!!!
I bought the IKEA Malm with pull-out panel. I love it for my sewing machine and I have my serger on the pull-out panel. I have 3 Kallax bookcases for my studio space and love it. I use the adjustable sawhorse desk legs and a hollow core door as the top for my cutting table.
OOOOO I don't know what that table is!! I have to look it up! Thanks for sharing! I absolutely love, love, love my Ikea products. It's perfect in a sewing room or any craft space!
Currently using a really old wobbly table! I have been thinking about this table for a while because I live in a very small apartment and I figured I could always double it as a dining table when I have guests!! May just have to make the leap and get it!
Glad I found your channel! Your review is quite timely as I have opportunity to "design" a more updated sewing room in the near future. I've looked at the Norden Gateleg Table in our nearby IKEA store, but hadn't decided if I was ready to "give up" my makeshift 20+ year old hollow core door table. My husband mentioned that when I'm not sewing, I still use the extended surface for crafts, etc. Now I have an idea of how versatile the Norden can be! Thank you for sharing. Blessings
Thank you so much Pamela!! I love my table so much. If you put it on sliders it's easy to move around and it folds down to nothing if you need the space. And it has so much storage. I love this thing. If I had the budget, I'd buy a second one and have a machine on it's own table or just have the extended workspace. I would suggest you move pretty fast on it if you think you want one of these, however. Between inflation and shortages, I don't know how frequently the stock with replenish.
I was just at IKEA (after not being able to go for the past 4 years)...and this is one thing I contemplated getting. Now I wish I would have! I will indeed have to put this on my list for the next trip down. I have to travel 4 hours so it becomes a whole day adventure, but FUN! I have never found IKEA products to be cheap or flimsy and am not sure why someone thinks this. Thanks for your review!
I know! I love my purchases from Ikea, but some people still think it's junk. I don't get it. I think it's nice stuff. Even my cheapo Kallax units look great and helped me get myself organized. Well, definitely use the app and do click and pay before you drive all that way for something specific. You can still go up and shop the store, but you know the big item you went for is there for you. Thanks for you kind message!
Thanks for this review. I have been looking at this table here in UK but haven't been able to afford it yet, but soon. It will be perfect for pushing against a wall in my tiny home and I can put it up for cutting out fabric. I've nearly saved enough so I am getting excited. Moving it won't be a problem though it is heavy. I will put sliders under each foot and the gatelegs. I have done this for my weaving loom and the sliders make moving furniture on carpet so easy.
You will love this table!! It seemed expensive when I first bought it, but now that I'm using it, it seems like great value for the investment. It's kind of unreal how small it folds up and how much workspace it provides when it's all set up. The sliders make moving stuff around so much easier! Let us know how you like it when you have had a chance to use it!
I bought this white Ikea drop leaf table last November, and it’s the best purchase I ever made. Sturdy, robust, spacious. All of the these things and more 😍
YES!!! When I praise this table, I'm being completely sincere. I just love it and I expect it to last me probably the rest of my life. I've only seen one bad review of this table and I frankly don't think he really knew what he was talking about. LOL
I love this table. I found an earlier model second hand which only has 2 drawers, but I wanted as a cutting table. We had some large caster wheels with brakes, which my husband added to the legs and also added extensions to the supports making it taller.. I don’t need to wheel it very far so these work well and as it is narrow when folded it tucks away into a small space.
I always loved this table, and I too, wanted it taller! I wish ikea would make a countertop height version, as well I would love to hear more, see pictures of how he did it! There’s no ikea near me either.
@@susanmei9980 I just watched a video where someone added both height and wheels to their table for fabric cutting (The Camden Stitch - the ikea hack).
Hey Patty great video I have coveted this table for a long time. I don’t do “put together well so my husband is the builder. Actually I am using the Hermes desk from IKEA as my sewing table and I love it also. It’s sturdy and has a lot of storage.
The Hermes line is good!! That's wonderful you have someone to help you put things together. Ikea instructions are their own language, that's for sure! I love, love, love the table. And I'm really glad I jumped in and got it. It's worked out perfectly for me.
I saw your film over the norden Gateleg Table, and i was sold for the idea…. I realy bougth it , and put coasters under neeth, …. I am so happy , it is such a great piece to work from…..now my sewing place i realy working for me…. Thank you so much….. greetings from Belgium, from the coastal town Blankenberge
Thank you so much for letting me know Jacqueline!! I'm happy to hear you love your table! I have been using mine for a couple of years now, and I still love it as much now as when I purchased it.
This looks great. I work on a small desk & don't really sew much any more, so the size folded up looks great. I'm trying to free up space in a small spare room. And the much larger size of the top would be great, too. What isn't great is that the price right now is not $199. I wish. It's $350 now.
I too am a recent convert to IKEA furniture, I built a tall Billy bookcase, while my late husband was in respite care, since he’s passed, I’ve built two Kallax units, one is the four x four and the other is the two x two as well as the three shelf Billy bookcase, currently looking into a replacement for the kitchen table, but it needs shelves as my kitchen is limited on storage, thank you for your reviews.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emma. And condolences to you on the loss of your husband. I love those Billy Bookcases. They always look amazing. I'm sure Ikea has what you need to help with storage. I just purchased some hanging wire racks that I'm going to install on my kitchen cabinets. I saved the pictures on pinterest and they should be delivered this week. That might help you as well.
Thank you so much for your thorough review. I’m designing a tiny house on wheels for my retirement and I don’t want to give up my crafting/art-making. I’ll have wood floors or other smooth flooring so I’ll install casters. This table will be perfect.
Oh that will work perfectly Clementine! This table is practically made for tiny house living. That's super exciting you're designing one for yourself. I admit to loving tiny and small houses.
I've had one of these tables for over 10 years that started out as our dining table in our first home with a small eat-in kitchen. After that it has served a purpose for many things. it's a beast and I can't imagine getting rid of it. The funny thing is that I've been thinking of using it as a sewing table.
I absolutely love it for sewing! I'm using it tonight. If I ever needed another dining table, I would definitely consider this one because of the versatility.
Hello! I just found your channel. I love your ideas regarding IKEA furniture. I’m a retired teacher and bought their corner table in white for my computer and another long table in white for my lesson plans, grading papers, student work etc. they worked perfectly. Now I’m using them for crafting and calligraphy. I love the versatility and the simplicity of this furniture. However, I don’t think I could tackle any of the pieces you mentioned. I’m just not able to get on the floor like I used to Lol! I’d have to have it assembled. The sewing table is perfect 👍🏻! Best regards.
I totally understand Cynthia. That's why I split up the assembly on most pieces. Otherwise it's too much for me, too. The kitchen island is the most difficult thing I've ever done. It really challenged me! But the rest of it is not too bad. You can always put a beach towel on a table top and assemble the drawers there. I put together another raskog cart this afternoon and did most of it on a table top. I invested in a really nice set of screw drivers and they were amazing to use!! Now I need some new stuff to put together!!
Very interesting video, thanks for posting! I also sew at an IKEA table (also drop-leaf, but a different model, something similar to Ingatorp - pine top and grey legs) and let me tell you, your decision to go with white MDF rather than pine is right. Pine is very soft and I made a lot of dents in mine while tracing patterns and cutting. The height of my table definitely an issue too. Happy sewing!
OOOO thank you so much for that insight!! I would not have thought about the pine getting dinged up, but now that you mention it, I can see it! It's such a pretty table though. The pine just came back in stock at my store, and I was lamenting I couldn't go get it. But after reading this, I feel so much better about my decision. You have made my day! Thank you!
@@PattymacMakes I feel you, pine is beautiful and I like it much better than MDF myself! Found some comfort in buying Ivar shelves and Tarva chest of drawers hehe
Hi, Patty I use my glass dining room table. I thought I would love an antique wooden desk but your example and explanation has so much space! Thank you for your care and attention to our sew special community!
My pleasure Carrie! This table gives you so many options for setting yourself up and sewing. And it's so easy to set up and take down and move around. Especially if you use the furniture movers to slide the table. It would be heavy without the movers and you would have to retighten the joints frequently from moving it around. But still, worthwhile! I'm really happy to be a member of the sewing community!
I open the boxes in the back of my hatchback and carry them in in loads I can handle. I recently redid my sewing table with a plain top, 2 inexpensive legs and one of the 6-drawer cabinets. Of course I can't remember the name but now can have 3 machines set up, and all the drawers are full of notions and cutting tools and marking tools, cleverly sorted. I love it!
Thanks for sharing your strategy for getting the heavy stuff into the house! Very smart! I love your sewing table idea! Really great idea! Thank you so much for sharing.
I first bought the pine to use as a dining table, now it's the perfect sewing table! I painted and labeled the drawer fronts and I stack my supplies in the drawers in stackable wooden bins from the dollar store.
I also have been using this table for my sewing machines. I have a serger on the leaf to the right and a regular sewing machine to the left. I keep it up all the time and I love it
That sounds wonderful Sue!!! It's super nice left up all the time but having the option to tuck it away is great. I leave mine up most of the time as well.
I've always loved Ikea items (but I also have two sons (26 and 35 years old) who love to use their power tools to put this stuff together. That was a great review.
Thank you. This was an informative, easy to follow video. Right now I use a farmhouse table. It’s sturdy, but way too big. By the time I walk around it when using it for cutting patterns or preparing yardage for blankets I’m worn out and need a nap.
We just bought the nordan gateleg table along with two Alex cabinets and 63 inch desk top for my sewing room. Took us two days to put everything together. I love the table because it is so versatile and love my new desk with Alex cabinets. Was skeptical about IKEA but you are right the quality is good. Also bought two peg boards with accessories. Love my sewing room now 😊.
That sounds like a wonderful set up! I have an Alex desk and filing cabinet, and I LOVE them both. It's been great furniture for me. I have the peg boards too!!
I agree Patty regarding the supply chain being broken. Sheesh!! 🙄🙄 Sooo i have painted and cosmetically upgradeda small 3rd bedroom at home for sewing and crafts. I got a traditional folding sewing table from a garage sale. Its on casters, can fold down to about half its length. Its 5' 3" long and only about 20" wide. But it works in my small space. I too have a small folding table. I still use my dining room table to cut fabric. Its always a work in progress. 👍😊
Oh gosh Annette. It's pretty bad out there. I gently urged people to stock supplies while they can still get them a couple of videos back, but it's not something people wanted to hear. I know it's not the best news, but it's happening whether we like it or not. And I don't feel like I'm doing my job if I don't alert viewers to the issue and urge them to prepare for it. Apparently China is buying up the world reserve of cotton and I don't think it's to print quilting fabric for us. So who knows what that means for the fabric industry. It does not sound good to me, so my suggestion is a few years worth of supplies on hand. I know it sounds excessive, but these things will not resolve quickly or easily. You are so right about a space being an ever changing work in progress!! LOL
@@PattymacMakes I do recall one video where you mentioned that. I for one am stocking up on basic universal fabrics, threads.. basics. I also am stocking up on some non perishable foods. Not crazy stocking.. but when something I use is on the shelves I buy 6 or more.. as often some things just are not there! Wishing you good health and peace.
Once again an extremely thorough review. The table is beautiful! I use one of those folding adjustable height target craft/utility tables....2 actually....1 sewing and one for crafting and painting.. I have no choice as I need the table almost on top of my thighs. Hips, shoulders, short leg etc. can't manage what a lot of ppl. can. No one could possibly understand unless they have my body but I am thankful that someone invented the 'adjustable'.....a needful design for many products,, many needs. Your space is just looking better and better!! To be honest I am envious though not maliciously so LOL. Tfs :D
Oh thanks Kathy!! Finding furniture that fits YOUR body is incredibly important. No two of us has the exact need, so adjustable is the name of the game. I'm getting the space together, finally. It's been a very slow process over the past year as there's been so many other things going on as well. But it's getting there finally! Thank you for your kind words!
I have been thinking about buying a height adjustable table since my space will only allow 1 table. I need a table that can help me when cutting fabric and when I'm sewing.
Wow my daughter gave me a machine because she doens't use it much so I now have two machines and I was just thinking about setting both up with different feet and then I see this!! I love Ikea stuff I don't have a lot but I really appreciate what I do have people that look down on Ikea are not only snobs but clearly haven't experienced the joy of their products
Oh my gosh!! RIGHT??? Or extremely old fashioned. I love my items soooo much, and I can't imagine not having my Ikea products. They have helped me to organize tons of clutter and keep my sewing room streamlined. I keep the walking foot on the second machine and it's the best set up. It's efficient and I can just pick up and sew within minutes when I'm ready.
The prices are up significantly since I made this video, so be prepared for that. And do be sure you check the app before you go and be sure what you want is in stock. The Norden has been a difficult item to obtain recently. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to get what you're looking for!!! I still love all my Ikea items.
Hi Lynne! I'm still using it and I LOVE IT. It's gone up in price quite a bit and it's hard to get now, but if you can find it in your store, I think it's totally worth getting.
I'm definitely going to steal the kitchen island idea for cutting table! Plus, with some chairs the kids will love sitting there with their crafting as well. Loved the video, liked and subscribed!
I LOVE that cutting table. It's one of the best things I've done for my sewing practice. It's wonderful to use and it looks great when not in use. The Norden table is a great table, and absolutely perfect for kids. Each child can have their own drawer or two for supplies. Thanks for subbing!
Funny, I bought that same table probably about 10 years ago or so as a dining table, but switched to being a craft table and still love it. It's taken a beating and keeps going.
It's a great little table! We used it at Christmas to join with the dining table and I made one long table. It was so nice for having family over! We all sat together and everybody could see and speak with everyone else. It's so useful! Do you remember what you paid for it? People right now are flipping out over the crazy inflation as it's gone from $200 to $350 in less than 2 years.
I live in Australia and I just checked my closest IKEA and they have stock 😊😊😊. I think this table looks so good for sewing. I like your video and I like you. Thank you for sharing.
I use the Ingatorp desk for my serger. Just got it a month or so ago and love it. I have a Koala cabinet for my sewing machine and I got it years ago, but if I didn’t I would be using an Ikea something I am sure. I love my Kallax shelves and my Billy bookcase too.
Oh gosh that Billy bookcase is gorgeous!! I love the Billy collection. When I moved to my new space I had more room to get some things I really needed. And a chance to invest in items that coordinated better than what I was doing before. It's amazing how space efficient the items are, yet so functional. My space is small so the functionality is what makes this work so well for me.
I've had this table for several years and love it! I never thought of using furniture pads under the legs to help move it around. Duh! The table is very heavy so I will, after all these years, invest in some pads to make my life easier!
They are life changing Anne!! And easier on the furniture if you're constantly moving it around. Home Depot has an aisle with tons of options. I will have to do a little video about them when I go back, because I can't stay away long!
I have my Brother 1500 sitting atop my treadle singer seeing table nestled behind an easy chair. I lookout east thru two eight foot windows in my living room. It has been my go to happy place. Across the room I have a square antique table that my little brother sits on for doing fancy stitches. I go to the basement to use my longarm. I don't mind being down there till late PM or early morning. I changed up the lighting last summer. It is a work in progress. Thank you for sharing your space it is inspiring. I'll need to make a trip into the valley and check out some of my favorite pieces. Wish I were closer to some who are in need of an extra pair of hand or eyes. I'd love to help assemble things in exchange for some fabric good bad or ugly. Lol
Your set up sounds incredible Bernice!! Thank you so much for sharing about your space with us! I wish we were closer because I'd love to do some of my items on the long arm for sure! I sure am glad to know I'm not the only one with my sewing space in my living room!
Thank you for your video. This will work perfectly in my small space. I immediately downloaded the app and was thrilled to find my store had 3 remaining. I ran over not long after they opened, tested it to make sure it’s as sturdy as you described, and purchased it. The display tag was marked as unavailable so I’m glad I checked the app! Can’t wait to assemble it (I have a cordless screwdriver so it shouldn’t be too difficult). Thank you!
100% behind you on the IKEA hot tip to check back everyday! Our local IKEA was out of a dresser we wanted for our nursery and people were selling their used ones for same price and some for even more on Facebook marketplace! Wild times for furniture needs. 🤪
I saw that going on with desks!! People would go buy the stock and resell for double or triple! Fortunately, as soon as mine came back in to stock, I dropped everything and ran right over. They still showed it as out of stock on the showroom floor, but there were 3 left in the warehouse when I got there. The white version of the Alex desk is pretty hot, so I was super lucky to get it. It's eased up now, but I guess different items come and go in popularity. Yeah it's wild alright!
IKEA is not fine furniture, but I agree that it's very good value, and it's durable. I have no issues with the storage units in my workroom: they're doing the job beautifully and I got a lot of attractive storage for the money. The Norden table is too small for me to hack as I have a 5' x 8' cutting mat, but this gives me great ideas for making one. I had not thought of gate legs for the leaves, and the centre block with storage drawers are just what I need. Thumb up!
Yes!! That's a great way to put it!! I live a very lower middle class lifestyle, so I don't require any fine furnishings. But I do need things that are functional, durable and affordable. There are a couple of videos on youtube where people made the gateleg table so that might give you a good starting point if you need it. It's a fantastic invention!
What I use for my sewing table? The kitchen table. I do put it up and cover it when not in use because we have cats and dogs. Love that fur! LOL!!! Our IKEA store is about two hours away. I'll make it a goal to grab the hubby (he'll be putting it together...tee hee!) and head out to look at all the neat stuff! Thanks for such a thorough video!!!
Thanks for your fun reply Jayme!! YES!!! Two hours is a doable day trip! But goodness, if you are after a specific item use the app!! You can also order the item and pay for it ahead of time and pick it up. I should do a video on that option, too, because I have used it for my larger items, unless I could drop everything and run over right away. For you with all that driving, I personally would check ahead and order it and pay for it so you know for sure you can bring home what you're after.
This is such an informative video! I actually was thinking of getting one of these tables for sewing and hearing your info about it really helps. I've put several Ikea pieces together and it's funny because if you look at reviews some people can't put the simplest item together. Lol Unfortunately, there is not an Ikea store nearby (there are 2 in a neighboring state). Now that I have info from someone who is using one of these tables for sewing, I may purchase it. BTW, I love your glasses!
Thank you so much Diane! I love a spunky pair of glasses! If you can swing an over night visit, then a little road trip to pick up a few items might be something you want to schedule in. I am so happy we finally got Ikea here and I love visiting. I'm definitely going again soon!
Wow, I want this table so badly. I live in a very small apartment and I've been using an ironing board for all my cutting and sewing (as well as ironing). I am so very tired of that set up. Thanks for the awesome review!
OH NO!!! That would be terrible! Save your lunch money, down load the app and get thee to the Ikea!! You will wonder how you went so long with that set up. You definitely deserve a quality setup.
Thank you so much for showing this table in action! I've been eyeing it for a while, but wasn't sure before. This is exactly what I want to go with the versatile Kallax units I love using.
I absolutely LOVE my sewing table!! I haven't done much sewing this summer, but it's all ready for me when I find that time again. I've been very happy with it.
Your right, I see it's perfect for sewing! In my little opinion, it's a good price even at inflation ( $350 ) compared to marketed sewing furniture🙋🏼 thanks for sharing
Perfect. Thank you. I've been wondering what I could do for a multi use table in my small apartment. I've looked at this but wasn't sure. Sewing, crafts, and eating. 👍
I have this table already and was thinking of using it as a sewing table but was worried if I could sit with my legs under it properly. Thanks for your video! Saved me from buying a new table!
I use mine for all my sewing and it's been fantastic to use! Try it out with your machine and see what you think. Even Ikea shows it as being a good option for the sewing room. I hope it works for you!
Unfortunately, we don't have Ikea here. 8 hrs away. But I have ordered them here before. Shipping is very high, but I got my order together, and it was worth it. I subscribed. Looking for a table to fit my small spaced sewing room think this will be petfect.
Same here.. no ikea near me at all. However, i do go to communities where they are located. Often even when shipping seems high, in a world where nowadays people always expect free shipping, im from a time when that was not the norm so.. $20 for a large item seems reasonable to me. Afterall, gas, time.. then food all add up!
Very happy watching your video, at 78 years I started sewing, it is the best thing ever happen to me.
That's wonderful Mary!! It's never too late to start. It's a wonderful and useful hobby.
I've had this table in pine for more than 15 years now, I love the weight of the table and the sewing space that it provides. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for sharing that Darline! I get so many comments that are critical of Ikea furniture, but I'm super happy with the pieces I have. I'm glad to hear you have had such longevity with your Norden. I absolutely LOVE mine!
Hi, is it very heavy? I wanted to get it for my bedroom but worried about the floorboards
Darlene, how do you find working around the leg? I'm concerned that it will be in the way while I'm working.
@@MirandaJ223 Miranda, I only use this table for sewing, as I have a separate cutting table. I use the table fully extended and I have I’ve found a spot where my chair fits perfectly under and is in alignment with my sewing machine (to the right.)
Thanks@@darlinespring4066, that's reassuring! Happy sewing.
@@mary-annz.reynolds7778 Sometimes it's better to step back out of the way especially when tools or swear words fly!!!😅
Thank you Linda!! I love mine and I'm so glad I took the chance on it and got one. It's set up right now as I type this message!
I have one of these tables and I love it. My space is limited so I can adjust size to my needs. Worth the price.
Thanks for the comment LaVern! I think it's totally worth the cost. I've always thought Ikea is good value for the investment.
I love this table! It's gone way up in price, but I still think it's worthwhile.
That's wonderful Lucinda!!! It's always better to repurpose what you have than buy more!!
My hubs made this for me 7 years ago, he put on a "platform" added casters for my height and extensions on the legs. I have used the heck out of my table. I love it for the drawers to keep my crafting/sewing tools handy.
That is awesome! What a wonderful husband!! I absolutely love this table. The price went up again though. so I'm really glad I got mine when I did.
I love mine! I am very short so it works great as a cutting table.
It's so functional!! I still love mine too!
I have been trying to buy this table anywhere for over 6 months- good luck getting it
I'm with you, I also love IKEA. The different hacks are pretty darn clever. Each to his own I guess.
@@PattymacMakes OK ))))
I am using a folding table currently. Hoping to buy an IKEA desk soon. Thank you for the informative video!
I got the Alex desk and i absolutely love it!! It looks great and the storage is amazing. Thanks for watching
You mean wheels. Did you also put them on the legs of the folding part
@@PattymacMakes I have new knees but do ride the cart in these big places we don’t. Need the stress and ikea is so so big
It's a wonderful table! And you could easily use it for both. With the drawers, you have a ton of extra storage too.
I have it too! Do try it.
I am in the process of planning my sewing/craft room. This table is exactly what I have been looking for, so thank you for the inspiration.
You're welcome Teresa! I'm happy it helped you!
.. and It’s not $5,000.00
I bought this white Ikea drop leaf table last November, and it’s the best purchase I ever made.
That’s a good tip for raising the height! I love this table and it holds so much of my clutter keeping the room nearer in between projects
I always loved this table, and I too, wanted it taller! I wish ikea would make a countertop height version, as well I would love to hear more, see pictures of how he did it! There’s no ikea near me either.
I love it when i find a gem at a garage sale! Good for you. The casters sound good too.
I know! The inflation is insane. I love the table so much, I still think it's good for $350, but much better at $199.
Thank you for this recommendation! I was in IKEA yesterday, fully confused and now I know this is exactly what I need!
You're welcome Elle! I am working on a video about other options, but this one is still my #1 pick. If you can get one, then I would grab it!
Good info, I have never thought of using this table for sewing or that it comes in white. My bff has the pine table since ~1987 still in great shape.
Oh thanks for sharing that bit of history!! Great to know the style and the workmanship of the table have held up all these years!
Hi, Patty
I use my glass dining room table.
My sewing room is filled with IKEA. Absolutely sturdy and so useable.
It's my favorite! I can't imagine not having it!
I first bought the pine to use as a dining table, now it's the perfect sewing table! I painted and labeled the drawer fronts and I stack my supplies in the drawers in stackable wooden bins from the dollar store.
I love that pine version! Norden in either form is a great table for sewing. Thanks for sharing your setup!
This table sounds wonderful. I especially like the foldaway capability since we live in a small space, too.
I absolutely love it!! It’s incredibly functional!
Thanks Barb!! That's wonderful you have help put everything together! That hat makes them even more attractive!
Well Barb your a lucky lady, my grandson is my first choice to put the table together for me. My three sons shy away from such jobs. 😉
Thank you. This was an informative, easy to follow video. Right now I use a farmhouse table. It’s sturdy, but way too big. By the time I walk around it when using it for cutting patterns or preparing yardage for blankets I’m worn out and need a nap.
LOL!! You might want the smaller table for your sewing and small projects but enjoy the blessing of that huge table for laying out big projects.
I agree I love ikea furniture. always works great for me.
I'm really happy with what I've bought from them. I still love this table and it's more than 2 years later.
Sheesh!! 🙄🙄
Sooo i have painted and cosmetically upgradeda small 3rd bedroom at home for sewing and crafts.
The table is so flexible .It's great help while sewing.
It's a wonderful table .Really like it and thanks for sharing
Thank you!! It's also great for knitting! Plenty of drawers to organize tools and WIPs and excellent table top to work on!
Glad I found you and this video! Planning a trip to Ikea. I love their furniture as well. Great quality for the price.
The prices are up significantly since I made this video, so be prepared for that. And do be sure you check the app before you go and be sure what you want is in stock. The Norden has been a difficult item to obtain recently. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to get what you're looking for!!! I still love all my Ikea items.
Thanks for a great video. Wondering if you are still using this and would still recommend it?
Hi Lynne! I'm still using it and I LOVE IT. It's gone up in price quite a bit and it's hard to get now, but if you can find it in your store, I think it's totally worth getting.
@@PattymacMakes Thank you!
I ordered the featherweight table for my featherweight machine . I like that you can put it away when not needed.
Oh i dream of having a Featherweight one day! Sounds like a great setup 😍
Used mine as a sewing table and now as a table for my knitting machine it’s solid❤
Perfect!
Thank you for sharing the furniture from IKEA. Your place is looking good.
Thank you Mary! It's come a long way! It was an absolute disaster when I started.
You're welcome!! I LOVE the table and use it almost every day. It's been perfect for my needs and I hope it works for you, too!
Thanks for sharing your experience with IKEA products. I never thought! Now I am thinking about taking a tour of their store nearest to my location.
I hope you have one close by! I love going over there, and I'm over due for a visit. Their food is pretty good, too.
I use Billy Bookcases for my sewing room but just got a Kallax off of FB marketplace. It's going on the closet for more storage organizing.
Thank you!
Oh wow!!! I'm so happy you were able to grab one!! Yeah, the app is the only way to go. Enjoy the table! It's amazing!!
I agree, Ikea is a gret place to visit. Theh have unique des, nice swedish meatballs an so much more ❤
I totally agree!
I got this table. I just put it together today. I’am in love with it. Thank you showing it.
I'm so happy to hear this Wendy!! Mine is set up and I have enjoyed it so much this week!
Thank you for sharing. I have the same table from IKEA, though I've put wheels on mine ( with a locking foot).
I have so many people ask about doing that so I'm glad to hear a success story about it! I love my table too!
Such a cute sewing table! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Brenda! I love it and it was fun to share it with everyone!
Love IKEA. Thanks for this review. Might try some Kalax?
Thanks for watching Linda! I love my Kallax organizers! They are not fancy, but there are many ways to jazz them up.
I agree with you totally, I subscribed because I liked how humble you were, hello from Finland
Thanks Esther! You are very kind.
Great idea! This video was randomly recommended to me but right up my alley. Will definitely look into purchasing for my office/craft room.
I'm really happy it showed up for you LaKendra!
Thank you, great sewing table. I love your large sewing lamp as well.
Thank you! 😊
I think so too, but I'm glad I got mine for $199. I just made an update video on this table if you're interested.
👍🏼Yes indeed, you got it for a good price at $199, and I would be interested in viewing another video about it! 🙋🏼Thanks
@@bondee5865 Oh thanks!! Actually I just did one!! It's the newest video on my channel!!
THAT'S BEYOND COOL!!! $$$ for me but I will keep it in mind!!! No room but would be great to use then put away!
It’s the coolest table and incredibly useful!
@@PattymacMakes I can tell, especially for small spaces (which is what I have!). Thanks for sharing 😊
Perfect. Thank you. I've been wondering what I could do for a multi use table in my small apartment. I've looked at this but wasn't sure. Sewing, crafts, and eating. 👍
You're welcome! You will be amazed at those deep drawers. They hold a ton of stuff.
I purchased this table from your recommendations.. it’s brilliant. Thanks for a great informative video 💕
You're welcome Diane! I'm so happy you were able to get one and love it as much as I do!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video today! Yes, I am so blessed to have Ikea 30 minutes away. I will definitely be going back again soon!
Same here.. no ikea near me at all. However, i do go to communities where they are located.
Often even when shipping seems high, in a world where nowadays people always expect free shipping, im from a time when that was not the norm so.. $20 for a large item seems reasonable to me.
Afterall, gas, time.. then food all add up!
Great review! Thank you for the pros and cons! I am also in the hunt for this table. Im hoping to get it soon!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching! I love this table and use it almost every day! I hope you can find one.
