  • In this video lesson we break down the 3 over 4 half-note triplet metric modulation with some basic examples and transcriptions.
    Drums are Yamaha PHX
    Cymbals are Zildjian
Shot with an iPhone 6s and a GoPro Hero3
    Recorded and mixed on Logic
    Transcriptions done with MUSINK
K Custom Special Dry crash in the back, behind the floor tom.
    13" MasterSound Hats
    16" K Custom Session Crash x2
Azuka on my left, camera right. Sizzles added to it.
20" K Custom Dry Light Ride. My favorite ride ever.

PASS is both hands,THE is right hand, SALT is the left hand, AND is right hand, PEP is left hand, PER is right hand. so right hand is 4 beats and left is 3 beats in this case.

From a 67 year old drummer who started with Ringo and Morello I can say that your skills are exceptional across the spectrum.. But what you also have is that 'it' thing when it comes to teaching.. that magic ability of making the seeming abstract understandable and transferable.. Hopefully younger drummers will see that value grow as they grow with you.. Thank you for what you give so freely Steve Holmes

Thank you for this lesson! I feel like I actually have a chance of playing this kind of stuff now. I enjoy your teaching style and your articulation very much. In the past few years I’ve discovered a few great learning channels including yours, Rob Brown, Joe Crabtree, Sweetwater with Nick D’Virgilio, Todd Sucherman, Drumeo, Sounds Like A Drum and a few others that I’m forgetting. You all have a gift for explaining concepts effectively with a relaxed approach and excellent demonstrations. I especially appreciate your transcriptions and emphasis on understanding the way the figures relate to the quarter notes. I’ve struggled with long triplet feels for a long time, especially how to write and sing them, but your explanations, written examples and demonstrations here have shined a new light for me. Thanks again, a lot! I will help support your channel and I look forward to learning more from you!👍

First off, you have a great drum AND cymbal sound. I mean you can actually hear the cymbals with clarity unlike so many videos out there that are mixed so drum heavy and you can barely hear the cymbals. I love cymbal demo videos....wow the snare sounds great, oh yeah what ride is that again? I love your sense of humor! Your feel is incredible. I mean very deep pocket feel and solid. That alone makes this a joy to listen to. Keep it up. Great video.

Man, you are an excellent instructor. I am in an original music situation right now and working on a tune where there is time change that NOBODY is adhering to. It's fusiony, ska-ish thing with a heavy rock halftime-feel break, but true halftime would be too slow. I'm gonna try this instead, hopefully without too much resistance. Thank you!
