- Carrying on our experimenting with @The Army Painter new Speedpaint range we wanted to see if the Contrast Primer range offered any improvements or differences, as well as some of The Army Painter's other colour primer offerings.
Definitely differences in the smoothness of the finish and the tones the primers can help produce!

More would be awesome! Mixing colours, various zenithal highlighting techniques, blending, thinning differences and using two or more coats would all be things I'd like to see.
I quite like the darker grey in the sense that it looks like it's in the dark, so you could go in an add a few highlights after the fact or apply a zenithal highlight while priming to get some really nice contrast.
Also looks like it would be a perfect base for an OSL effect.
A good choice for people wanting to do a diorama IMO
The only thing I can think of to try- is to prime with a color then drybrush some white for a highlight and then use the speedpaint to get a finished figure.

FANTASTIC this is exactly what I wanted to see.
I can absolutely tell that the AP white is very grainy compared to the GW primer. I found this to be true with using GW contrast paint as well. I think it has to do with the flatness. The Contrast primers are ever so slightly satin finish helps the paint flow better.
A recent painting project has totally put me off Army Painter primers. (both white and blue nozzle clogs and the blue rattle can exploded out the top causing hours of cleanup) I wont be buying AP spray paints until they fix their shitty nozzle problems. These were at least the 4th time I have had to toss half cans of paint from the nozzles clogging. And this is the ONLY brand that I have that problem.
Of course now I want to see how it looks over OTHER hardware store and hobby primers. Since I paint a lot of 3d printed resin some plastic primers work better than game colors.
Yeah, I think I’d money isn’t an issue a few extra for the contrasts are the way to go with these paints. Will be interesting if TAP come out with any new primers. They have different ones for their foam kits - obvious is totally different primer but the nozzles are much better IMHO.
I can tell you my experience with Rustoleum primer - flat white and grey with contrast paints on 15mm minis the grey was too dark and dulled out the contrast. The white works for most colors, but I have since bought Wraith bone and I think it is worth the additional cost at least on 28mm miniatures. I have yet to try the Grey Seer.
It's worth the effort to have some mineral spirits on hand and use a rag of it to wipe off the nozzle of any rattle can the clogging has less to do with the actual paints as the conditions under which the paint is used. By that I mean ambiant temperature, temp of the paint, the humidity.
I use cheap rattle can primer, all surfaces though, and have had 0 issues with them, but I do everything I can to control the environmental effects, meaning repeatable results, and never spray under adverse conditions. Worst being cold temps, ambient or the temp of the paint itself, and high humidity being the worst conditions to spay in. Having to use "miniture" specific paints is at best just not true, and worse the slight benefit is a little bit more reliability for a novice painter.
Its not uncommon to catch cheap paint on sale for $1-2 when I do, I'll grab a couple each of black, white, light and dark gray, and usually that's all I use. I've only ever used matt finish if for no other reason than i know what to expect from it.
Had a 1 year old Army Painter Necromaric Flesh can go flat on me just drizzled out and could squeeze the can as the pressure was not there, had to may another. 😕
@@thomasgross8289I live in a ridiculously high humidity area all year long (very south USA) so I use spray cans in extreme conditions. Low humidity here is 35% even in winter.
I'm going on 30 years as a pro level miniature painter and I have used just about every paint brand on the planet from Rustoleum to Mr. Hobby. If you don't think there is a difference in adhesion, surface tension, surface finish, particle size, filler, nozzle pattern, propellant, and solvent between $1 discount spray primer and hobby specific primers, I'm not going to try to convince you. But there is a difference for anyone who knows what they are looking for. For me I need a product that is consistently reliable and works with my tools and style of painting. I painted over 210 pieces in the last month alone.

The dark Grey spray looks great for dead rotting skin. The red looks good on the grey as well. That is something I did when I painted a bunch of orks I used 3 different undercoats and got some really cool different tones with contrast greens, I am looking forward to getting speedpaints. Necrotic flesh is a great spray.

I've used Barbarian Flesh and have found out the problems are more so just leaving the can to warm up, leaving it outside mind you, to get a smooth color out of it. So far I've been enjoying the different skin color variations I've been getting for my zombies.
Barbarian Flesh as the base with contrast, GW shades, and Army Painter Shades as well making all the work easier for me. Fun, easy, and quick to go through a multitude of zombies.

Ill be getting these speedpaints using my Necrotic Flesh spray on my Zombicide Undead or Alive when it arrives also hope to use them on Massive Darkness 2s brighter fluffier minis in the future. 👍

I think that green goes really well over the grey primer. If you're using army painter greys you can always match the AP spray with the dropper bottles so you could spray white and then base layer just the trousers/pants with a brush & the grey
Good idea! Yeah I think green looked pretty good too. Worth baring changing the base colour before applying the speedpaint
Really love this whole series, so great to see all these experiments with speedpaint.
Must say the skeleton primer looked beter than I had expected.
Have you considered doing some scenery ( rocks walls forest etc)?
I would like to see this also with hardware store primers, for comparison if nothing else
That's all I ever use. Krylon flat white. I don't see why I would spend $15 for a can of GW/AP when you can get good primer for $5. I doubt there's any real difference in their formulation, just the price (marketing).
I use Rustoleum 2X UltraCover primer! Available in every hardware!

I've definitely found that the GW primers are the best. I'm not sure whether it's the paint itself or the higher-quality nozzle, or a little bit of both, but since I don't paint a ton of minis, the cost difference is worth it to me.
I plan on Vallejo black primer with zenthithel highlights with white acrylic ink.

Nice to see the paints over different color primers. Gives ideas of Nice way to tint them for effects.
My Crusaders Skin does not look like that. Mine is very dark. I tried over my normal zenithal and it came out almost chocolate brown. So I went over a medium grey still very dark. Didn't have anything primed white so I went over an unprimed reaper bones model white model. Still very dark looks almost like the dark wood color. I should add that I use a vortex mixer and they bottle was very well mixed on there.

I was wondering how the necrotic flesh would work with speed paints. AP's free booklet encourages you to try different bases with their washes. I wonder if they'll start doing it with the Speed Paints too?

The dark grey primers was actually a very surprising result! totally works for a darker completion zombie.

The crusader skin really impressed me, it's definitely a step up from gw's guilliman flesh, but the plate mail mini looks like those dumb shiny die cast minis some company tried selling for a few weeks.
Warm. cold and neutral Zenithal all work well with them.
The necrotic flesh primer worked brilliantly for a zombie-like skin with the crusader skin speedpaint
I thought the same! I was expecting that but I can see priming like that for Zombicide
I use that necrotic primer for everything death guard, zombie, or greenskin. It is probably their most useful nonwhite primer IMO.
I found that the orc green looks great over black primer.
Have you tried Mr. Finisher 1500 for white, grey and black? Smooth and excellent.
orc skin is my favorite color. Thing is you gotta mix it with other colors. I mix it with the maize yellow for orcs and palid bone for goblins.
Been looking for alternative primers to Wraithbone for a while. Really a fan of contrast paints and am very curious about the speedpaint line, but GW doesn't ship sprays to Sweden anymore so my Wraithbone supply has ran dry. With Army Painter being DK-based and thus not subject to the same shipping difficulties I had hopes for their primers as a replacement, but that doesn't seem to quite do the trick.
Any idea when the big set will be available? I don't to waste my time with the 10 bottle box, I'm totally sold on these.
My FOGS has the starter set with 10 colours for preorder, out in february, and the "Mega Set" with 24 colours out in april. $$$ per bottle is about the same for bith sets, though. I'm in Germany btw.
The green over mentalic silver would work well for painting Slambo's armour.

I'd like to see zenithal highlighting. But I love the grey skin look.
I think it would be pertinent to point out that the purpose designed for the two different colours for the Contrast Primers was to provide either a warm or cold finish with the use of the contrast colours. The off white being warmer than the grey. With this in mind one could select alternate undercoats for the effect you want. I use a light grey and then a mid to dark grey on figures to under shade on the contrast. This worked very well on a Death Guard army I painted. Funnily enough I am also using Contrast on Sisters using Rhinox Hide as the undercoat and Flesh Tearers red on top of that for the armour. This is pretty good and you can highlight as much as you like on the top of that. I expect the Speed Paints will allow the same practices.
I tried to get speedpaint early order or some testers since I was heading to Mexico and they don’t sale in Mexico. Army painter told me no, and they were gonna be delayed so I bought the citadel contrast. Availability always wins in the end.

have you tried Stynlrez primer, i got a sample when i bought some minis from Reaper Miniatures a few years back and i saw that they have now a matt white and grey primer , havent tried them yet but i was going to get a bottle of the matt white and try it out with the speed paints
I have tried them, yes. I prefer the vallejo airbrush primers. They seem to go on a little smoother. I have friends who swear by Stynlrez though and say it's their personal favorite. I know that's not a great answer to your question 😁

Army Painter did something like that when showing how to use SpeedPaint line but I think is not clear but more interesting is to go deep on this process. New mini painters could do this as its way of painting as seems worth quality by time spent. Greetings from Spain

Ah that was very cool! Please please please, consider the same experiment, but adding slap chop (grey + white) to the primer before using the speedpaints, that would be super informative for us paint nerds to see the difference 😁
So far I've only seen Artis Opus demonstrating slap chop on red, but haven't seen a comparison of different slap chop jobs depending on the primer.

I saw in the Honest Wargamer that he plans to do a slap chop video about this, but I find difficult to watch his live stream videos, they're very long with a lot of talk that takes a bit away from the actual technique and experiments unfortunately. I prefer your approach to videoing. 👍👍

Just got the speed paints so I'm looking forward to having a play. When using them for the first time did you need to get rid of some of the medium as shown in the box or did you just give them a really good shake and crack on with it?
Just a shake. Like as much as every other army painter paint. It needs more than you can ever imagine :-D

Imho, the difference between the primers makes it worth spending a few £ extra.
I have used Contrast over both GW's and my airbrush primers (UMP, AK, MiG, etc) and never seen any graininess. I wonder if the SpeedPaint will work as well with the Airbrush primers as the Contrast paints does?
I could browse YT, but to tired atm. Have you noticed any graininess with Contrast over AP primers? (I honestly have never tried AP primers)
I wonder if the GW primers have finer paint particles in them, then the AP primers and that's the reason for the grainier end result?

What about a gloss white primer? Or no primer at all?
I know the latter is madness, but it could be interesting seeing how well does speed paint cling to raw plastic or resin.
And the former could reduce or resolve the problem with graininess.
Uniform gray looks like Color in the Night seams perfect for Bordgames withe a Night Theme like Kill Team Zero or Nemesis
How do they look over a zenital highlight? I'm sure there are videos showing contrast paints over them but I'm curious.

I like the flesh over the silver paint look. Would be good for some robotic figures like a Terminator (Arnold, not GW), maybe some Necron's, and such. Maybe even some Aliens (Ridley Scott type and such).
Any chance of doing a comparison of contrast paint Vs Speed paint Vs Army Painter colored washes? I've done a few tests with the colored washes in the past and the Speedpaints seem to have very similar results but I don't have Speedpaints yet to do a direct side-by-side comparison.
I have not used a rattle can in ages. Do you think one can use these with a true white or an off-white airbrush primer?

I don't have any Speed Paints yet, but I've had good results using contrast paints over both Badger Stynylrez (well, rebranded as Ultimate Modeling Products and Ammo by MiG Oneshot) and Scale75.
imagine using these in conjunction with airbrush priming. smoother finish in the controlled environment of your painting area and no outside weather getting in the way.
For the money these speed paints are shaping up to be hands down better then the GW more costly version.

These videos have made me excited for the speed paints where I found contrast paints less to my liking.
Part of the issue w contrast paints is they didn't seem to work exactly as advertised, but speed paints seem to do a better job of that.
The consistency of these is making me so happy. I don’t start putting them on and suddenly they are a different style to the previous colour I used :D im going to paint some more entire miniatures soon and get a feel for what we can achieve with all the different colours

I understand the SpeedPaint "reactivation" is less of a concern with Army Painter or very matte Primers. The Citadel Contrast Primers are not as matte and may lead to "reactivation" challenges.
I don't see anything wrong with the green imo. I understand your dislikes of the color but does it perform the way it should is more important here imo
I know man. I’m just hating on something very subjective :D it works perfectly well and there’s always going to be cases I actually want that exact green!
