    Disagree with Ali... the drummer can definitely be front and center and people LOVE it

      I agree...Billy Cobham, Virgil Donati, Vinnie Coliuta, many of the gospel drummers were or are very often out-front.

      Sounds like we need an additional video! I happen to agree with both Ali AND Joey, as it depends on the band/group, yeah? A deeper dive wouldn't hurt. And thank you, Wynton, for an excellent talk!

    How did a pic of billy Joel get in there? That’s a pretty big “goof.”

    No you’re not right , the drummers I mentioned never tried to outshine the other players in the bands they were in, they enhanced the music by their exceptional ability.

  • @chuckc7375
    @chuckc7375 9 дней назад +9

    That’s nonsense, Tony Williams stood out, Elvin jones stood out Art Blakey stood out, these were great drummers who’s sound was very noticed.

      Here’s some more Craig, Billy Cobham, gene Krupa, buddy Rich, Dennis chambers, Ginger Baker, Steve Smith, Dave weckle , Lenny white. These drummers were much more than just time keepers.

      I think the drummer wasn’t talking about style. I think he was talking about presence. Those drummers you mentioned all had their own sonic signature but they were not overbearing played over the music. That’s what the drummer was talking about. It’s like some drummers try to compensate for some inabilities by playing “front and center’ when all you hear are them playing over everything else. So he’s right - a good drummer, no matter the style or technique, never outshine or play over his bandmates.
