This whole album is exceptional. I listened to it more times than I can count in college. Van is an artist, poet, musician...and sounds like nobody else. Glad to see another generation get to know this underrated and amazing artist.
@@narabdela actually yes. While that seems like a lot, his top selling album sold 6.3m which ranks only 519th place overall. Moondance which is the album I'm talking about sold 3.9m which ranks it 1048th place overall. He is well loved by his fans, but many people (especially under the age of 30) don't know him other than a couple songs.
From Van's Moondance album from 1970. This was written about an experience Van had when he was 12 years in Ireland. After a day of fishing, they stopped to ask for a drink of water at a home in the village. The man said he had stream water he could share. Five minutes after drinking it, Van said he slipped into another dimension and had a mystical experience. He said it made him appreciate nature to the fullest. Beautiful vocals by Van, and wonderful horns and guitars make for a satisfying peaceful tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
What a profound story of an experience from his youth, I’d like to echo the other comments on this thread and thank you so much for sharing this, it’s stuff like this that makes these reaction videos so rewarding coupled with sharing the experience with those reacting to it for the first time. Factoring in this story, it explains the deeply solemn gospel procession I’ve always detected from the tune, and it has that warm sunset daydream feeling thanks to the embellishments from the sax wherein the mystical communion is communicated so effectively. It definitely transports the listener to another place and time, which seems to be a really rare occurrence in music to stop time in such a manner. For me, it’s most often found in songs rooted in gospel, folk, soul, and blues. Otis Redding and Al Green are both masters of getting me to that place where it feels as if the veil of reality itself is being lifted to reveal the machinations of the universe. Steve Winwood and Greg Allman are both great examples as well. As for female vocalists, Janis Joplin is quite adept at getting me to that place, Stevie Nicks and Laura Nyro come to mind as well. The first time I heard Patti Smith I was experiencing something of a “perfect storm” in my life.. “Birdland” came on and hit me so hard I completely exhaled and had a short out of the body experience of astral projection where I saw myself from an elevated corner of the room that changed my life forever. I can’t even hear that song without feeling paralyzed and transported to another dimension similar to what it seems Van Morrison detailed with his experience with the water. Thanks again for sharing such a wonderful story!
There is not a weak song on this wonderful album, Moondance. I love it as much today as when it was released in early 1970 and many of the songs still get lots of airplay on my memory sticks while I'm driving. I remember looking at the liner notes as I always did when I tore open the cellophane on a new album jacket and I recall reading about Van's wife, Janet Planet, perhaps one of the coolest names I've ever heard!
Every time I hear this song.. I get a Huckleberry Finn vibe. I can just imagine Van as a kid, with his buddy, hanging out and walking around the Ireland countryside in the summer time. He just puts those clear images in your mind with his lyrics and sincere vocals.
A true artist, Van Morrison, a prince of Irish Soul... Into theMystic, Someone Like You, Warm Love, Days Like This, Tupelo Honey and some earlier tunes like Domino, Wild Night, Moondance. The more you listen, the more it takes you away... love your reactions to so many different songs. Thank you for reintroducing me to my music era...
One of the great albums of all-time and yet somehow forgotten is Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks." Songs from that album to consider are "Astral Weeks", "Besides You", "Sweet Thing", "Cyprus Avenue "The Way Young Lovers Do" and "Madame George."
To hear him before he was so mellow, Van sang lead for a band called Them in the 60’s - recommend Baby Please Don’t Go and Here Comes The Night He also recorded an actual country song called Once A Day - it’s great!
Van Morrison wrote and sang "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" which Rod Stewart also recorded but Van wrote it as a prayer to God. His is the only version that I listen to.
My neighbor when I was growing up hanging a song about where about the neighborhood brother that's what hes saying about Hey had a real strong masculine voice his name was Dave DAV E Loggins yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's how the song was called please come to Boston by Dave Logan's Dave does
Go break your throat hair down a little bit the song is called trashy women and the country group that does it would be the Confederate railroad Confederate railroad Scott the song trashy women now consider this couple right here by Gordon breaking d*** a song try she women by Confederate railroad brother how d*** funny would that be? Tell me the big a**? I of?
Van Morrison is a multi-instrumentalist... and he knows just what sounds blend well together, and knows which instrument's voice he wants to stand out and when. He has a definite and inspired approach to putting together the right elements to make musical bliss! And Van's vocals and lyrics fit so organically and perfectly into what he composes instrumentally. A poet, artist, and mystic for the gypsy in our soul.
One of the best songs ever written! Jelly Roll refers to a famous blues musician. The song itself is about having a NATURAL high from doing & experiencing things you love.
Thank you, I’ve been hoping for this one for a long time. I’ve been listening to Van since 1964 when he was the front man for the band Them and they released his song Gloria. If you want a real treat, listen to him doing Gloria as a duet with the great, great blues man John Lee Hooker. Definitely in my top ten all time performances, a virtual masterpiece by two legends.
I grew up near Woodstock, NY, where Van Morrison was living when he made this record. Several of the musicians on this track (and the whole album) used to play in local bars in a variety of different bands. Those were magic times.
"It stoned me" could mean that you feel good like when you have been drinking or on drugs. Also, in the U.K., I believe that "stone me" means you are shocked or surprised.
Van Morrison, one of the great Singer songwriters of the last 35 years I wanna recommend the movie, “ Michael “ with John Travolta The movie closes with a great great Van Morrison song called “Bright Side Of The Road” or you could listen to one of the great love songs ever written “Have I told you Lately” Keep listening to van the man
I absolutely love Van Morrison, such an iconic n serene voice that makes me reminiscent of a time I'm nowhere near old enuff to have endured😌✌️ Fantastic voice n musical mind. Domino is another by him I'd check out, but you can never go wrong with this guy. Bangin channel, best there is n thx for the reaction(:✌️🎸
Lol, listening to you guys! Jay it's obvious why you like football... Structure! And Amber you are an obvious barefoot hippie chick! But go together so well! As for Van, he's really an amazing songwriter, really a poet. Before he went solo with Brown Eyed Girl he was in a group named Them. Their (his) song Gloria is a classic classic song. Every band practicing in their parent's garage learned that song back in the 60s. In the 90s Van made the coolest version ever of that song with the late Jon Lee Hooker, a blues giant! (He was the street musician that you loved in the Blue Brothers movie) I know you guys love the blues, check it out! Peace!
Three more Van songs to check out: Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile), St. Dominic's Preview, and his funkiest song, Cleaning Windows. He's a world treasure, so glad you think so too!!!
I love do many of Van’s songs but there’s something about Cleaning Windows that just sends me every time I hear it. I just drop whatever I’m doing whenever it comes on my playlist!!!
You guys are so upbeat and I know that you look at life with a positive attitude. Van did a very upbeat song and you would appreciate its mood. The song is "Dark Side Of The Road"
Had the pleasure of seeing Van Morrison at the Santa Clara County Fair Grounds (San Jose) in 1971. On the ticket with him that night was Cat Stevens. Van Morrison is not a very dynamic performer. He just basically stands there, plays his guitar and sings, but with that voice and music, you don't need to be dynamic. Those were the days.
I think the song is just a simple childhood memory with him and his friend, Billy with water being the unifying theme of the three verses. It's an expression of the simple joy and innocence of life as seen through the eyes of a child and it's as great as any "high" he's ever had, such as lovemaking when he was older.
Van is one of the greatest living songwriters (and singers). He also has a tough R&B side, and he can rock out with tunes like Domino, You Make Me Feel So Free, Wild Night and Jackie Wilson Said. His catalog is deep and broad, and he continues to do good work (sometimes) even to this day.
Van The Man Morrison, always in the mood for the Irish Troubadour. Suggest "In The Garden, Real Real Gone, Enlightenment, Sweet Thing" and with, Them: "Gloria"
you ought to try and see him live (on dvd) and you will see him rock, roll, blues and soul.. He brings it. I saw hi in 89 and he was majestically good. This song is about fishing when he was a kid.
Last year I bought a reproduction copy of this record. I bought it because I love the song Moondance. To my surprise this album was full of other great songs. This one in particular stood out to me. Gotta love Van the Man.
My favorite Van Morrison song is actually from when he was a member of “Them”. “Gloria” is awesome in its seeming simplicity but when you really start to pay attention, there’s a lot going on with the guitar riffs. You should check it out!
Loved this guy for more than 40 years! Van is his own genre, totally unique and impossible to copy. I love many of his releases, and AstralWeeks is a fave -recorded live with selected musicians. Btw, he plays guitar, piano & sax all really well. Saw him live only once, in Washington DC… and like my Pat Metheny experience, was absolutely transcendent! Love you guys!
I have to add my vote for the live Caravan from The Last Waltz with The Band. You will not believe your eyes and ears. Van almost didn't appear on stage that night, but when he did, he delivered possibly one of the best performances ever committed to film.
Van Morrison is a very deep well to tap into. He had a streak of perfect albums: Astral Weeks, His Band And The Street Choir, Moondance, St. Dominic's Preview. You can drop the needle on any song on every one of those albums, and it's an amazing tune.
Have you heard 'Wild Nights?" John Cougar Mellencamp covered it, but Van Morrison sings it the best and it was one of his top hits next to Brown Eyed Girl and Moondance.
He is very versatile - plays guitar, harmonica, sax - has dom=ne a country album "There Stands the Glass" is an incredible song. He covers a lot of ground - does a lot of jazz.
I’d almost forgotten you’d done Van the man before. It seems like it’s been forever. His catalogue is huge. You should check out ‘Dweller on the Threshold’. It is very different from the ones you’ve listened to to date. It has a more uptempo pop vibe to it. It’s early ‘80s. The saxophone solo in it is spectacular.
It stoned me, is an awesome tune! Van Morrison crushes it with this one! I uses to listen to this a lot only way to High School!!!!!! Cool memories!!!!!!
Van Morrison’s Moondance album is on Rolling Stone’s top 100 albums of all time. If you haven’t reacted to Moondance you need to. You’ll see Van’s jazz side!
I'm with you Amber!!! I don't plan anything!! If I get up on the weekend and say hey, get in the car, we're leaving... let's go! Lol. I introduced a dear friend to yall and she subscribed to the channel yesterday.
Before he discovered country / jazz Van was lead singer with Them, a classic 1960s r 'n' b band, with memorable hits such as Gloria and Here Comes the Night - - creating a sound that, arguably, had a major influence on The Doors. Then he went to California and made the album Astral Weeks [backed by the Modern Jazz Quartet}- creating a sound and style that was quite unique, haunting and beautiful - much of it in a distinctive, light 6 / 8 style. The rest is history! 🐻
You two have got tot dip into his early stuff. Astral weeks was a unique album out in ‘68. Check the title track. As I understand it, it was a group of musicians who just got together and riffed off each other to come up with each track. Very organic! Great stuff!
This was the favourite song of my late, darling friend Gretel. Just 32 when she passed away. I remember singing this song with her so many, many times. X
This is the anthem for being high on life. One of my favorites. Of course "Wild Night" is also about being high on life, but it's more nostalgic, I think.
This one is one of my favourite Van Morrison songs. We both come from Belfast, Northern Ireland. My all time favourite song of his is “Daring Night”. It’s a masterpiece. A very unique song by Van (performed in the spoken word) is Coney Island, the song is about a small and picturesque community in Northern Ireland, it tells of Van (and his friends) on a drive to do some bird watching. You will never hear another song like it, and it really ages well (like a fine wine).
I never get sick of hearing ANY Van Morrison song. This one in particular reminds me of my childhood in the western Maine mountains, in a little town called Rangeley. Whole lotta fishin' and swimmin' every summer with my buddies. Man, life was simple in those days!
I loved when she explained one of my favorite songs just as I see it. I was later in life before listening to Van (other than songs on the radio and covers). It is really amazing hearing his songs change as he ages. I remember a professor once saying one should move through his discography in order, spending two years on every album before moving on. I didn't do that, but for the richness of the albums it kind of works out that way.
That line, "And it stoned me just like Jelly Roll," is referring to Jelly Roll Morton, a jazz pianist that Van's father listened to when Van was going up.
I'm in my 30's and have been listening to van the man since I was a kid, van covers every genre of music over the years and has released a album every year and is still going 👍
Try Wild Nights next time. Soothing in a energy filled way. We always thought Van was speaking about our countryside around here. Or check out Caravan . Jay, I'm more of that itinerary-type. Glad you dug it. Thanks. That's so true Amber. Nice reaction.
This whole album is exceptional. I listened to it more times than I can count in college. Van is an artist, poet, musician...and sounds like nobody else. Glad to see another generation get to know this underrated and amazing artist.
Yes! One of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Van Morrison "underrated"? Sixteen million albums sold "underrated"? What on earth are you talking about? Do you even know what the word means?
@@narabdela actually yes. While that seems like a lot, his top selling album sold 6.3m which ranks only 519th place overall. Hipsters always say Astral Weeks was the best but Moondance is better imo
From Van's Moondance album from 1970.

Great story and fits the song to a t. Thanks for sharing that.
Must have been one of those famous Irish "streams of whisky". 😉

Jelly Roll, for those who may not know, was a Jazz Pianist back in the day. Van mentions him in several songs.
Jelly Roll Morton
My impression was "Stoned Me" was he was blown away and how simple and beautiful life is.
Same
Love it.
"Wild Night" is an awesome Van Morrison tune. Timeless voice. I could still cruise to it today. And it's got horns!
Yes, great cover of the original song by " Martha & The Vandellas". Featured in the 1991 movie "Thelma & Louise".
Didn't Amber and Jay react to John Mellencamp's version of that song? Might be nice for you guys to hear the original!
"Bright Side of the Road" is another great one.
Yup Amber, my fav by him is Into The Mystic as well....for 50 yrs now.
Every time I hear this song.. I get a Huckleberry Finn vibe. I can just imagine Van as a kid, with his buddy, hanging out and walking around the Ireland countryside in the summer time. He just puts those clear images in your mind with his lyrics and sincere vocals.
Jay /Amber, you'll love his "Wavelength", "Domino" and "Wild Night"!!! Time for more faster paced Van The Man!!
Wavelength is awesome song!!!
"Jackie Wilson Said", "Wild Nights", "Domino".
One of those people who can't really be categorized. A singer who also writes. Well respected.
I've always liked the horn work in this song. It's not over powering but really adds to the tune.

Brilliant album
its actually considered perhaps his best and 1 of the best period
This is actually my favourite of his songs. He has so many great ones, but I love the storytelling of this one

He also recorded an actual country song called Once A Day - it’s great!
Classic Van Morrison. That whole album is great. You really gotta try Moondance from this album. His jazz self really comes out.
Van Morrison wrote and sang "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" which Rod Stewart also recorded but Van wrote it as a prayer to God. His is the only version that I listen to.
I can listen to Van Morrison over and over. Into the Mystic is my favorite, too.
I tell you what's good for you start playing out the stuff is a good ON ATO KE

Please do “Crazy Love” and “And The Healing Has Begun”, I love Van Morrison. Amber, just like you “Into The Mystic” is also one of my favorites.
You definitely hit the nail on the head with this song and my other two favorites are Tupelo Honey and Into The Mystic
Brand New Day from the Moondance album is amazing. Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom, sang background vocals.
Thank you, I’ve been hoping for this one for a long time. I’ve been listening to Van since 1964 when he was the front man for the band Them and they released his song Gloria. Can’t mistake his voice!❤❤
Very true!
Love this song , also check Van out doing "Caravan" (must be the version from The Last Waltz). He will blow you away!
it'll get blocked. great great version tho
The best video on RUclips
I grew up near Woodstock, NY, where Van Morrison was living when he made this record. Several of the musicians on this track (and the whole album) used to play in local bars in a variety of different bands. Those were magic times.
Very interesting! Couple of years after The Band's Music From Big Pink .. must be a Catskills vibe.

Van the man a very deep rabbit hole to go down. The Irish muse and poet.

He sings atmosphere and story, an aural film...🥰❣️

This is the anthem for being high on life. One of my favorites. Of course "Wild Night" is also about being high on life, but it's more nostalgic, I think.
I had forgot what a great song that is...WOW!!! Thank you!!!! Been years since I listened to it.
What a legend and still going strong.
This is very melancholy for me Van Morrison's music transports you straight back to better times .
Irish soul. Love this.
Van Morrisons’s music…. Oh my heart 🥰
Thank you both. In a sometimes dreary world your a gift of brightness ❤
Yes, a truly great song and performance.
Van Morrison is an old Southern American soul born in Northern Ireland ✌️
I loved when she explained one of my favorite songs just as I see it. I was later in life before listening to Van (other than songs on the radio and covers). It is really amazing hearing his songs change as he ages. I remember a professor once saying one should move through his discography in order, spending two years on every album before moving on. I didn't do that, but for the richness of the albums it kind of works out that way.
That line, "And it stoned me just like Jelly Roll," is referring to Jelly Roll Morton, a jazz pianist that Van's father listened to when Van was going up.
Next up for Van Morrison...SWEET THING!🍒🎙🎶
We're in Dublin and heard a band last night who sang a couple of Van Morrison's songs. Best place for hearing live music any night of the week.
An Early Classic,, Jimmy Buffett "Come Monday"
Van is my fave. Played Brown Eyed Girl at my Sissy's funeral. Listen to"Careless" or "Southern Girl" by Amos Lee and anything by Ray Lamontagne
my favorite irish singer since i was a wee lad of 12 ....
My fave song of his...it's like a perfect poem.
This is my favorite Van Morrison song. It's essentially a love letter to water
I had this album when I was 17, but seeing him live at the Troubadour in LA, same age, was incredible!!
I'm in my 30's and have been listening to van the man since I was a kid, van covers every genre of music over the years and has released a album every year and is still going 👍
Wow forgot about this one Great song!!!
My long time favourite song of his, never seen anyone react to it before.
Into The Mystic is my fav of Van's.
Van Morrison is absolutely amazing
Try Wild Nights next time. Soothing in a energy filled way. We always thought Van was speaking about our countryside around here. Or check out Caravan . Jay, I'm more of that itinerary-type. Glad you dug it. Thanks. That's so true Amber. Nice reaction.
