In the beginning of Wilson Picketts career, he resented Elvis and Tom Jones becuase they were singing black music and getting all the credit for it. After his career took off with The Midnight Hour, he had an occasion to meet Tom Jones and saw that he was a cool cat with amazing talent and they became great friends. You can see the amazing chemistry between them in this video. I grew up listening to them both and a huge fan. Amazingly talented and handsome gentlemen!
Tom had a passion for soul singers and Wilson was one he admired enormously. They did make a dynamic duo in a classic performance. Tom insisted on having a lot of old time rock n' rollers, current rock and soul performers on his show as well as the main stream stars the networks endorsed. A truly magical moment in variety show history. 😁

I love love this video and your reaction makes me enjoy it even more. Tom had a love and respect for Soul/R&B it shows in his delivery. He's not working any extra to"fit in," he didn't need to. He sings with as much or more than the person he's singing with.

Jones was more than anything else an R&B, Soul and gospel singer. Check out his duets with Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard -(and, more) he was (is) amazing. In the 60's when first coming to the U.S., Black DJs wanted to book him to come to their stations and then were told he was White, they didn't believe it.
I don't know if I have ever heard two male singers with this level of vocal quality singing together besides John Lennon and Paul McCartney

That my friend is because Wilson Pickett was Tom Jones inspiration for well over a decade before they did that medley together. You can see in Tom Jones' face the love and respect he had for Wilson Pickett.
