There’s a reason why all these legends respected and still do respect Tom so much. He has it all! I think he has suffered a bit from the same thing you have identified with Elvis - he was an entertainer who hosted tv shows etc etc…so people overlooked his pure vocal talent. But those in the know knew!

What was so very special about Tom Jones and us black folks back in the 1960's and 70's, was that Tom Jones was ONE OF THE ONLY MAIN WHITE SINGERS, who the Black folks CONSIDERED ONE OF THEIR OWN. They REALLY LOVED Tom Jones!!!😀👍

this is the 60's brother. They seem to be having so much fun together and uniting through the music. There is no black/white, but just a shared passion and love for the music. These are two little kids who don't see black and white or know that the world thinks they shouldn't be soulmates.......great music, great video, great comments.........................and an incredible duet.

Nice to see you reacting to some of the classic singers from the 60's & 70's. Tom Jones is a Welsh singer who has one of the smoothest powerful voices around. And he was a showman too, in fact he was a big heart-throb with the ladies. He has so many hits such as "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat?", "Green, Green Grass of Home", "Delilah", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "She's a Lady". He covers a lot of genres. Hope you will look into more of them. He is still performing & is a coach on "The Voice" UK version. He also had a variety show from 69 - 71 & had some of the biggest music stars at the time.

I had chills rippling through my body listening to those two belting out the growls and their beautiful bravado. As you said, they have true chemistry between them because you can't fake that. Wilson Pickett is so soulful and smooth but to hear this white man from Wales sing like that is just too much. When Tom's voice goes down into his lower register with his soft soulful voice it makes me weak in the knees!

That is the best vocal performance that I think you will ever find of his. Then you need to watch Shirley Bassey, his fellow welsh singer who does bond songs like Goldfinger and diamonds are forever, she sings a song called “i who have nothing”, which Tom Jones also sings . Do both of their versions.

  • @WickedFelina
    @WickedFelina 2 года назад +5

FANTASTIC DUO! Loved them BOTH my whole life! However, Tom Jones is from Wales in Great Britain. He didn't hangout with Black people til he made it but he had it before he made it. Tom was Elvis's good friend. Tom Jones euligized Elvis at his funeral.
This is how, why and when white people and music were influenced by the Rythm n' Blues sound.
What happened in the early 50's rock n' roll was Fats Domino and Bill Haley and the Comets. Rock n' Roll was a fusion of 2 types of music popular at that time: white Rock a Billy and Black Rythm n' Blues.
Elvis, when asked stated: "Rock n' Roll is essentially Gospel music and Rythm n' Blues". Elvis didn't take anything. It was because of HIS interpretation (the answer Elvis gave) of what he was doing, that Rock n' Roll became 100% a style of music, which people believe came out of Black culture. Elvis gave ALL the credit to the Black community. Now if you asked Chuck Berry, he would tell you something completely different (where he got his musical influences).
Til Elvis came along and sang a sexualized style into Rythm n' Blues. White radio stations didn't play Black music. Especially in the South with Jim Crow Laws. Elvis opened the door to Black singers who couldn't get through like James Brown, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. All of them loved and thanked Elvis. It is interesting because when Chuck Berry moved to the white section of the poor south, where white Country music was #1, a good friend of Chuck's said after he moves there: Now, Chuck's music is gonna change!
He was right! Chuck was influenced by Country music. "Johnny B. Goode" and "Maybelline" are Country songs.
Elvis was born in a shack in Tupelo Mississippi. In the section of town relegated to Black and mixed race people. Elvis moved to Memphis government subsidized housing also on the Black and mixed race section of town. Elvis attended East Trigg Baptist church led by Reverend Herbert Brewster. This was Black Baptist church. Elvis sang in its Gospel choir. He also wore clothes from a Black, second hand men's clothing store. Elvis was mixed race Melungeon which is Black male slave, white, and Native American on both sides. In the segregated South if you were white, you could not marry a mixed race or non white person. Which means he was mixed on both sides. He is related to another famous Melungeon, Abraham Lincoln. He was our 1st mixed race president and only won twice by a majority in the North. The Democrat South, which is the party of slavery, kkk and Jim Crow segregation laws, Lincoln didn't get ONE vote from the Democrat South. After the war, 13 former male slaves were voted into office as Republicans (Abraham Lincoln was a Republican). Just a bit of history people are forgetting.
    BACK TO ELVIS -
What Elvis did in the early 50's was to open the door to Black music (as Thomas Rufus (a Black performer) stated "Elvis gave an injection, into Black music no one had ever done before."
Black teenagers and white teenagers LOVED his music and attended his concerts together. In the South, the concert halls were segregated, but it didn't stop the teenagers both races, rushing the stage together, side by side to get close to Elvis. What happened was, teenagers, who just wanted to enjoy his music got pissed off. That is when the Civil Rights Movement took off. You had white young people who wanted segregation to end. Elvis recorded his 1st hit "That's Alright Mama" in 1954. The young people were introduced to Black Rythm n' Blues. This is why you see the EXPLOSION of white musicians on the 60's many coming from Britain (like Tom he started out on 1967) long after Elvis gave white teenagers the experience and love of Black music.
Nope! We wouldn't have the artists who came after singing Blues in a rock roll style, if not for Elvis.
In the 50's DJ's started to play Black music because of the popularity. HOWEVER, in the 60's when the Beatles hit America. DJ'S STOPPED PLAYING BLACK MUSIC and played only British white musicians singing Black music and Black style music.
Elvis went into the army and when he came out, they made him do movies for years.
It wasn't Elvis who hurt Black performers. Black performers like as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown loved Elvis for opening the door. He was able to, because teenagers of ALL races loved him and so - created the DEMAND for this sound.
Also, it is Jackie Wilson who said "Elvis didn't take moves from Black performers, Black performers took moves from him!"
Michael Jackson's moves included Elvis's, James Brown and the Moonwalk which was inventedin the 30's. You can find a few videos of Black and white performers (even womenin movies doing thr Moonwalk and othe rmoves you will remember Michael did. It is an amazing piece of history to see the originals. It is WONDERFUL Michael did those moves unbelievably well.
Elvis did a moonwalk sideways. You can see it in some older videos.
Michael was a huge fan of Elvis. Paula Abdul was Jackson's choreographer. Michael had all his moves practiced in a studio with Paula's choreography. That is what made his performances so great.
Another thing people don't know about Michael HE WAS A BUSINESS GENIUS! He didn't get taken advantage of by managers like Elvis. One thing Michael did which skyrocketed his wealth was taking advice from his once friend Paul McCartney. Paul (once Beatle) told Michael to bid on music at auction and buy the copyrights of songs as they expire. The composer then loses the rights to their own music and you, make his money. Michael and Paul did a video together "Say, Say, Say) after that, both of them went to a music copyrights auction. When the entire music catalogue of The Beatles music came up to bid on, Paul and Michael were sitting together. Michael OUTBID Paul out of the music that he wrote.
After that, the friendship was over. Michael became the wealthiest in the music industry.
John Lennon (Beatle) admired Paul's ability to compose. John said "Paul was the Greatest Pop music writer he'd ever known"
You might not know this about Beatles music. John and Paul made a pact when they 1st started. Every song either of then wrote, BOTH would put their names on it, though just one wrote it. So, they both split the money from the song.
Paul's music is always the "Pop" sound. John's was influenced by LSD.
There is SO much to learn about the history of rock n' roll. That is just a taste.
Michael Jackson 1st married Lisa Marie Presley. They were good friends and knew eachother growing up. She always said she loved Michael.

There's a performance by Tom and Janis Joplin on his show also and they tore it up. Best live duet I have seen, the chemistry was astonishing. There's no other decade like the 60's for the amount of power vocalists that came out; not for the U.S anyway. You had Tina Turner, Aretha, Patsy Cline, Etta, Gene Pitney,Janis Joplin , Stevie Wonder,Roy Orbison, Otis Redding, These two, Creedence Clearwater, Joe Cocker, and dozens of others all at the same time. The 60's were ICONIC

Finally, I have been waiting for this reaction. Glad I found it. Wasn't sure who was going to be doing it but I was hoping it would be a black man with a REAL appreciation for what soul inside of the music sounds like and looks like. Not a poser fake reacting. Wilson Picket IS soul music and Tom could hang with him in the genre and as the song Hey Jude says "make it better". You can tell Tom was in awe of what was happening throughout this medley and a dream he once had was taking place. He was singing with the man he idolized.
Your reaction was great! I usually dont like when someone interupts in the middle and stops the flow but you did it at all the right times and what you said and expressed was right on the money. These two vocalists...artists, were having the time of their lives together in that moment and pushing each other, letting it all hang out. Truly one of the best live performances and rock/soul moments ever captured.
    Loved this reaction!
Edit: Just went back and watched it again! GREAT STUFF! "...Tom be loosenin' his tie..." "...Wilson, listen to that vocal fry! .....he got that cat growl down!" "...Tom gonna make me knock everything over!"..."...Jesus, ...y'all are psychotic!" [Hanky smackin the camera]
    Really enjoyed this!
Second Edit: I'm sorry, had to come back again. Been down the TJ and WP rabbit hole and after watching this AGAIN the nuances and add libs of this performance are so amazing. Wilson reaching over and touching Tom on the shoulder when he sings "...don't carry the world upon your shoulder", that look in his eyes is so sincere. And Tom's improvised "In the midnight hour" reference to the previous song during their runs and Wilsons growls at the end of Hey Jude. Man this was just amazing. It makes me so happy just watching these two crush these songs. And your reaction...heightened the experience. Thank you for that.

and I too love a growl. Wilson was his main idol I think! He said when he started out Wilson Pickett was who everyone was trying to sound like! Tom must've been thrilled to sing with his hero!

Too much talent in the 20th century all at the same time !! ... singing icons were everywhere. Tom Jones clearly the best white male singer. Check out Tom Jones "I'll Never Fall in Love Again".

Thanks for sharing this video with your followers , TS. Am very glad that I got to see it and very appreciative to for that. Elvis Presley was a real good singer but whether you like it or not aTom Jones and Wilson Pickett and Little Richard were a thousand times more better. Don't believe nobody's opinion. Let your ears be the judge. And these guys also were better than every member in The Beatles.

Tom Jones is the blackest white guy that ever existed! He even dated a sista for quite a while a she was mighty obsessed with that white boy, thing is he married his childhood sweetheart in Wales and for all his philandering (hard to hold that much testosterone in!) his wife was the only one that had his heart eternally for 63 yrs. till she passed. He was a mighty broken man then and his heart ached for all the pain he put her through. He's has a fascinating bio. He IS Sir Tom Jones, Knighted by our precious Queen. His bestie was Elvis...imagine that much genuine man pheromone in one room! Lawd a'mighty! Giggle! Oh and did I mention that boy CAN sing!!! He is one of a kind fo sho!

Sir Tom had lots of greats on his 📺 show and duetted with them 🌟 you have to watch all of them 🤩 Sir Tom can sing soul, pop, rock and roll and much more 🌟 this was fabulous both of them together are brilliant 🌟 Just think for one moment this was in the 60’s and 70’s singing with a number of black people 🤔 and now think of the party in power making everything about race and causing huge problems 🤔 Tom was friends with a number of black people and you can tell there is a great friendship between them 🤩

I completely agree with you about the "lists". The idiots who make the "lists" aren't REAL people! Some of the best movies I've seen have had the lowest ratings from the reviewers. Some with the highest reviews were the absolute worst! First on MY list of singers is John Farnham! Tom Jones, Elvis, Michael McDonald & the Bee Gees are next.

This is not all Tom has to give. I think the fact that it’s Wilson Picket, who he modeled his sound after, is why I can tell he’s not vocally competing with Picket, but deferring to him. Check out more of his songs to see what I mean.
