My reaction videos are purely for entertainment purposes and are my own opinions upon listening to these artists/bands. They may not match what you might consider but my opinions are purely based off what comes to mind.

Great idea doing both versions in one sitting. They are both masterpieces in different ways. Folks always saying “you should have this or should have that” don’t understand that the studio and the live versions are simply two different stars in the same wonderful galaxy that is Pink Floyd.

I agree, both versions is a good idea.
I believe with a lot of performers, the studio version is often better because you hear all the subtle sounds that were intended to be in the final recording such as the "little pinprick" ping in this song. Then you get to hear the supercharged live version with a view to how much has changed from the original studio recording. Also their stage lighting and effects are stunning. Worth watching the whole show, just like their albums are often best listened to in a single sitting.
people tend to be dumb. "you must enjoy the thing in exactly the same way that i enjoy it" is an unfortunate thing, and isn't something to be negotiated with.
it's one thing to say "oh, you might enjoy [this] version better" or somesuch , but this phenomenon of "you did it wrongbad" has long outstayed its welcome.
Agree! No two people enjoy a Pink Floyd song (or any song) the same way. You may also find you enjoy each of their songs differently each time you listen to it. Part of the magic of Pink Floyd.
Agreed, except the studio version of "The Great Gig in the Sky" is sublime. Given the history of that performance, it's the one case where I'd recommend that version. The ebb and flow of the vocal, it's subtlety, it's timing, the way it feels right, is precious. Much of Pink Floyd's music has been refined from improvisation, I'm sure, but here the guest singer created the entire vocal on the spot, in two takes, with little subsequent editing. It's essentially fully improvised. This, I think, gives it a spontaneity that has been hard to recapture in later performances.

Juliett, you have nothing to apologize for. This Pulse concert is stunning, every song's a gem. Stick with this Pulse concert, you can't go wrong. Try Run Like Hell next.
Run Like Hell from Pulse is just about the most bombastic and spectacular thing you will ever see.
Run Like Hell is the concert closer, do yourself a favour and don't watch it until your done with the rest of the PULSE concert, there are MANY tracks to listen to and watch.

Comfortable Numb is number 2 on my all time guitar solo list. My favourite is a Tony Iommi solo he did in a 1983 concert. That was broadcast live on the radio.

David Gilmour has the most emotionally eloquent guitar on the planet. He does not play it he makes it speak, sing, cry, weep, rejoice, howl and bawl. No amp required, just his soul. Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" are two of the greatest story-telling, concept albums, musical mind-journey's ever told! "The Source" by Ayreon is another..... A great way to spend a day "elsewhere/when".

Juliett I was at this concert and I'm now 67yrs old and it was awesome to have been there. Even though comfortably numb could have been the encore it wasn't, the encore was a song called RUN LIKE HELL so please have a listen to that you will definitely not be disappointed also SORROW you must do that one aswell.

This proves that you are far from being "Numb", since a "Numb" person doesn't feel any discomfort, they aren't able to feel any emotions or to think clearly.
Unfortunately the keyboard warriors forget that it is all about reacting to the greatest band in the world.
Pink Floyd are more than music it is an experience and seeing you experience it for the first time makes me remember mine.
Keep them coming and try not to let the negative take to feelings that the moment gives you.
Unfortunately there are people who leave negative comments whatever you do, please try to ignore them. Music is a very personal experience, some people like the album version of a song and others prefer live. There is no wrong answer in my opinion, but I think it's a good idea to cover studio and live versions. I've been a big Pink Floyd fan since I first heard The Dark Side Of The Moon album in 1973.

Really enjoyed your reaction to this!!! Glad you included the live version from the Pulse tour!!! I was fortunate to see them on this Pulse tour in 1994 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. There were 47,000 fans and I had 18th row seats on the floor. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime!! I highly recommend "High Hopes" from this Pulse concert!!

People want you to listen to Pink Floyd studio versions as well as live because there are a lot of things Floyd adds in studio versions that can't be replicated live and Floyd is the king of studio production. I'm sure we just want you to chwck all of the elements that made Pink Floyd great, not just their amazing live performances.

As you say, one of the best guitar solos ever. Top three for me for sure. I'm 58 and I never get bored with listening to it. It literally makes me cry. And I was lucky enough to see them do it live.

Long time Pink Floyd fan here, since the release of their Iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon". I was 17 att. Floyd is one of the greatest Rock Bands EVER!
Pink Floyd was founded in London in 1964, they've sold hundreds of millions of albums worldwide, and no one puts on a live performance like Pink Floyd, on another level altogether. I was fortunate enough to get tickets, (difficult to come by) to one of their only 12 concerts of "The Wall" in the US in 1980.
They performed 6 of those 12 shows at the Coliseum in Uniondale New York, (Long Island), that's where I saw them in February of 1980. it was, and is, the most spectacular live performance I've ever seen.

I still have the old Pulse CD set. And the light is still blinking.

That was one of the best reaction videos I have seen to that song . You are the first to comment on the beautiful ball that opened up. The live version is an experience. I was at that gig. It was the best gig I have been to. What I notice now is it was before mobile phones. Well done. (When I listen to the track I watch listen to it on youtube).
I Saw Pink Floyd in 1974 in Waterbury CT great concert ,they played for over 3 hours the ticket costs 7.00

I love listening to Pink Floyd, and I love watching them play. As a wanna be sound engineer (got to work the boards for a few small church bands), I am floored by their setups, and don't even get me going on the light show that put on. Thanks for the reaction Juliett.

I am 71 and been listening to Pink Floyd since the beginning. I think that this specific concert displays them at the peak of their talent. Yes, they are older... and more mature. That said, anyone and everyone is free to like or dislike a studio version vs a live version. Just don't criticize anyone else's choices. Present your viewpoint? Sure. But do it with facts, not just opinion.
I thought your reaction video was great, and I loved that you stood up for yourself and your right to your opinion. There is no right or wrong way to watch/listen to any of this. Keep going.
My first exposure to Pink Floyd ever was this very live performance. My father, a lifelong fan, said my journey should start there. Then I listened to the whole PULSE live album. Only after that, I realised that a big chunk of that live album was in fact the entire Dark Side Of The Moon, so that's when I started listening to their studio music. Now I know their entire discography by heart, front and back. I'm as big a fan as I can be, I appreciate their music to the fullest. It doesn't matter AT ALL where I started.
Long story short, everyone's interest has different ways to build up and if you are instinctively drawn to live versions, go where your instinct takes you.
David accomplished one of the top three guitar solos ever performed! Master class!

I’ve heard the studio version of Comfortably Numb SO many times (love it!), but this is the first time I’ve heard a live version. I was in 😭.

I assisted to the shows of the tour in Lisbon. Two days in a row in a giant football stadium with an even bigger stage, I think!
When this song was played I thought it was the last song of the night and that in visual terms this was the best. I was mistaken. They ended the shows of this tour with Run Like Hell. I tell you, I saw a lot of bands live. Great shows. I have never seen and will probably never see a light show like Run Like Hell again. The music is good, although not as good as Comfortably Numb, but the stage, the lights and everything were amazing.
Today, after 30 years, I look at it and regret that the videos only provide a small idea of what that was like. Unforgettable.
About the guitar, I agree with you. Gilmour is fantastic! Never the less, as I think you are a young girl discovering old music, take a look of Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Tour). It's a completely different way of playing, but something tells me you will enjoy.
I'll never ever forget the first time I saw the Pulse version of that track. It had and still does have the most profound effect on me and I wasnt even there. It was truly lifechanging. Even though I saw Gilmour play it on the Remember That Night gig at the Albert Hall that I was at in 2006 and saw Roger Waters do the same track in August 2006.... but man, this Pulse version was something else. Truly truly lifechanging.
Juliett, you're 100% right! - The Pulse concert is THE way to fully experience PF's music - the audio-visual overload (plus, as you rightly say, they give EXTRA in their live performances) - Comfortably Numb and Sorrow, for example, have MUCH longer UNIQUELY enhanced guitar solos from DG, both of which are absolutely fantastic, whereas the studio versions (to me anyway!) feel like they finish waaay too early - just fading away with a way shorter solo, that you are hoping is longer - PF's Pulse DEFINITELY addressed that... 😆
PS - I avoided the Pulse videos initially too, thinking that (as is sadly the norm for a lot of other artists' performances, or just the sound / video quality of the live recordings available), they wouldn't be a patch on the studio originals... ...boy, was I wrong - I prefer them now - PF gave 200% for every one of them!

The best ever comment about David Gilmour's guitar playing comes from David Mustaine, of Megadeth:
"I'm of the belief that a player like David Gilmour could do more with one note than some of today's shredders can do with a dozen."
I was at this concert in 1994 in Montréal, QC. I was blown away, like many others. I do watch the DVD every once in awhile and watched and listened to this solo dozen and dozen of times. It moves me every single time. Either I get goosebumps or a lump in my throat. No other guitar solo ever performed comes close to the emotions in this piece of music.

i was at the pulse concert in wembley, and ur right ive never seen anything like it since. im nearly 60 now and even my kids say that they wish they could go back in time and see such concerts like that..

I wouldn't worry Juliet. At the end of the day, this is a reaction channel - if you already knew the bands, the tracks, then there would be no need to react would there? So, how are you supposed to know which version is the one you should listen to first if you've never heard the band or track before!

I saw them in 77' lol. The 'Animals' tour, in Boston
First, I attended this tour in Winnipeg, and it was the most amazing experience. I could go on forever about the 3D sound and David's searing guitar. Anyway, I love this format. The studio and live performances are different. The studio is the "ideal" version. The band has labored over it for many hours. The live version is a real-world version. Sometimes (like in this case) the live version transcends the studio, pushing it to levels we never expected..And in the end, your reaction is alll that matters. That's the point of these reactions.
I don't think that music this day can come anywhere near this. You did a great job. No appologies needed my dear.
You nailed it. Arguably the best solo of all time. The entire Pulse live concert is 😊ff the chart fantastic, and it’s 30 yrs ago; they don’t make music like this any more. They are as good if not better live than studio

Fantastic reaction! I think it was brilliant to do both the studio and live versions, back-to-back, in the same reaction video. I was in my mid twenties when I saw PF on this very tour (it was May 1994 at the old Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts). I was fortunate enough to witness this live, and I agree with you about the live version being even more magnificent than the studio version. That being said, I know some prefer the studio album, and that is fine. I just happen to think that most PF songs are even better live, imho. Looking forward to more of your reactions!

My first listen to them was when my older brother brought home Dark Side of the Moon from the record store when the album was released. I'll never forget that initial experience of listening to the album all the way through, like it was some kind of deep inexplicable dream.

Another “double reaction” for Pink Floyd for you to consider would be the studio version of *The Great Gig In The Sky* followed by the Pulse LIVE version - a non-lyric vocal song
Both magnificent on their own terms, representing the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance 👍
I, too, have grown to rely on live performances captured on video to feel the full effect of music. My large, poor old box of CDs is sadly neglected. While never having seen Pink Floyd live, I attended a Brit Floyd concert a few years ago, and their performance combined with lasers shooting, at times, both above and below where I was seated was almost beyond words, creating a feeling of flying through space while listening. 'Supremely memorable. I would recommend watching Roger Waters' performance of "Us and Them" in Amsterdam - it's powerful.
Seek out "Echoes" when they played live an an amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy, in like 1972. They get into an epic groove! The last concert, the classic 4 members of Floyd did was in 2005, in London for the Live 8 charity concert. They played 4 songs, epic -and despite the animosity between some in Floyd, they went out with a last concert statement.
Juliett, I want to steer you towards another outstanding live performance by Pink Floyd, and another guitar masterclass from David Gilmour. 'On The Turning Away' from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert is a must see & hear. Beautiful.

My first time seeing your channel, Jess. I greatly enjoyed watching you react to music that I grew up with and still love.
My first exposure to music was my weekly must watch of The Monkees when they first aired. Yes, I'm that old, though I was still very little. I started working in a club when I was 12 and saw dozens of live shows before my first live concert at 13. Music from the album is wonderful and it gives the band the opportunity to add in little touches and flourishes that enhance the sound, but the true test of a band or singer is how they perform live. Raw, open, no autotune, no studio fakery.
Pink Floyd have always been a band that made sure their live shows were an experience. Lights, lasers, props, but most of all, how talented they really are. They take great care in how their music is presented and make sure the audience leaves feeling fulfilled. I had the good fortune of seeing this tour when they came here and it remains one of the greatest shows of the hundreds I've seen. And, yeah, David Gilmour's closing solo here is probably the best I've seen and heard in all my years of concerts.
Don't allow anyone to tell you how you should react. Do it your way and let yourself feel the emotion of the music.
Juliett, well done. Let an old PF fan explain a bit. For many of us PF is our touchstone to music and remains that even now 50+ years later. That is why people will winge on about listening to the original version first (as though the first live performances before the album release do not matter, go figure). Older PF fans can fall into this trap because they love the music so much AND they want you to make your discovery similar to theirs. They mean well, they truly do. You will find this in many groupings of music fans, metal fans in particular, can be very specific in what is or is not "metal." I would suggest that as you have time move backwards through the PF catalog all the way back to the early days when Sid was still in the band. The context of the historical progression for PF is hard to overstate in any way, it is very important and sort of unique in modern rock music. When Gilmour did "Remember That Night (2006) he went back all the way to Sid's best stuff (Dark Globe, 1969) just after poor Sid had passed on. It is hard to describe the deep sense of loss many of us still feel with Sid's passing. Now, specifically to "Comfortably Numb", it really almost makes no difference how you get there, as long as you do. Watching the extended version live in 1994 (on that tour) is hard to even fully grasp now. It was fantastic from beginning to end and it never actually stopped for the crowd. We were exhausted by it all at the end, people just standing around grinning at one another understanding immediately what we had just shared together. All PF fans are excited for you now, you have so much to discover. Welcome to the tribe.
This is a perfect example, of how - as good as the studio version is (and it IS very good!) - the live concert (especially Pulse 94) is practically another song... but even if you wouldn't go that far, just watching him emote THROUGH his guitar and the artistry of his physical note-bending along with his facial expressions, is why live performances are so much more real and valuable!
Another example would be VNV Nation's 'Sound of Silence' - in that case, I would encourage you to watch BOTH the music video as well as the live version - oddly enough, on the Tonight Show! - but in that case, they BOTH have unique performance value... in the case of the music video, the story-telling (and great msic and vocals too of course..); in the case of the live version, the emoting and vocal fry (aided in that case by the fact the David Draiman was actually sick at the time, which actually added to the vocal fry technique)
I saw Pink Floyd live on the Division Bell Tour on June 18, 1994 in Denver, while on a couple of hits of acid. One of the best nights of my life.

Excellent job. Don't stop. Never stop. Feel the music. The studio version of songs is better quality but in this case the Pulse concert version is awesome. The chills are called frisson and I still get them from PF 50 years later.

Excellent review and many thanks for covering both versions of this extraordinary and timeless song. I cried when I first heard it in the 1970's and my emotions are still the same today. My favourite song of all time from the greatest band of all time!
I was at this concert at Earls Court in London 1994 and along with Guns n Roses use your illusions tour in 1993 in Paris are the best nights of my life
I was there in 1994 aswell. At earls court, have seen Floyd six times live over the years five of which they played comfortably numb and two of those concerts were the wall at earls court 1980 and 1981
I also saw Floyd at earls court on the wall tour in 81 and in 88 at Wembley stadium and the last night of the division bell tour at earls court. I've also been lucky enough to see David Gilmour and Roger Waters on solo tours including his wall tour. But for me the division bell ( pulse) concert is the best concert I've ever seen over everything else.
I think I agree with these comments EXCEPT, when you do great gig in the sky there are quite a lot of reasons for doing the studio version first.
I couldn't agree more with your comments about live performance over studio recordings. Live is unique and one-off never to be repeated plus you have the visual dynamic which is far better than staring at an album cover. I would recommend you check out The Who, their musicianship and performances are legendary. Look up the iconic 1978 concert at Shepperton studios to see what I mean. But don't stop there, new contemporary artistes like St Vincent and Public Service Broadcasting are still touring today so you can experience the real deal. Music is a big landscape and there's so much to discover, have fun.

Concerning Pink Floyd, I recommend always doing a live version if it is available. Very few songs in their catalog are overwhelmingly better at the studio version when compared to the live version. Die hard fans sometimes argue that the studio version of Great Gig in the Sky is the only version thats relevant forthat song. Can't argue that the studio version is perhaps the greatest work of musical art that most of us will have the pleasure of experiencing in our lifetimes. However, I prefer the live Pulse version solely because you can physically observe the raw emotion that is put into the delivery of the music. I got the pleasure of experiencing this tour when it came to the USA, and without any doubt, Great Gig in the Sky received the longest, loudest ovation of the show. Hell, do both versions as you did with Comfortbly Numb. There's no way to lose with this option.
Any tune on the Pulse show is top shelf quality. If there were a Nobel prize for guitar playing, David Gilmour would have a boatload. His guitar forces the listener to feel the emotion he is trying to convey. That's a talent/ability that a very small number of guitarists possess.
I hope to see you check out more songs from this concert. Great Gig in the Sky, High Hopes(noticed from some of your other videos that you have quiet a few Nightwish songs up...Nightwish covered, very respectfully in my opinion, PF's High Hopes), Sorrow, Coming Back to Life...the list goes on and on. I'm a big fan of Gilmour's solo work and would recommend In Any Tongue from the Pompeii show in 2016.

Good reaction. Pink Floyd did a movie call the wall too. It is a good movie. If you like seeing a movie or can fine it. Came out around 79-82 something like that. Don’t remember just when.
I think you're absolutely right. Live versions are the best. Comfortably Numb is a perfect example of this. Everytime I check out a reaction I will shut it off if it's a studio version. Keep up the good work!
_THE_ best guitar solo _EVER!!_ 🤘🎸 You should do the live version of "Run Like Hell" from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert. The opening guitar part is synced with the laser lights and it's spectacular, both visually and audibly.
Live videos can be hit or miss (in terms of video and audio quality, performance level, the venue and crowd, age of the performers at the time, etc.) so that’s why I think it’s usually better to listen to the studio version first. In the case of songs like this one, it’s just that much more impressive when you hear the live version and find that they’ve somehow taken it to another level.
Hi Juliett. I'm from South Africa, a big Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan. I heard what you said in the beginning and have NO idea what is was about, don't want to know either. Just sit back and enjoy the talent coming from your headphones, especially David's guitar solo. This was the 1994 tour. Do yourself a favour and watch the 2016 Pompeii tour. It is 22 years later but I find it so much nicer and the effects are better and even David's solo seem to sound better. Thanks for uploading
The Wall album is an entire story beginning to end. Comfortably Numb is just a small part of the larger story. It's the story of the protagonist's life. Sometime, if you have time, you might try listening to the entire album from the beginning. And the album even loops. The first song splits in two and the last song does the same thing. You have to listen to them together to hear that. It's genius. Thanks for a nice video.

Little one, don't worry about negative feedback. Just continue your journey and if I may suggest put the whole concert through stereo speakers really loud, you'll enjoy it a lot 😊. Actually put every Pink Floyd album through really loud and in the dark, just let your senses truly feel the music.

Don't worry too much about other people's comments about how to listen to these songs. There are only two things to keep in mind when listening to Pink Floyd, and it's really to get the full benefit of each song, not because one way is right and the others wrong. First, don't interrupt David's solos. They have a life of their own and you're better off getting in the flow, going all the way with it, and reacting afterward.
Second, their studio albums are for the most part concept albums meant to be heard as whole compositions in themselves, not as a collection of separate songs, and so are best heard in one continuous sitting. Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here in particular benefit from listening all the way through, and you will get a better sense of their meaning and impact that way. That said, whole album reactions have their drawbacks for reactors, and that's understood.
As for which version to hear first, you cannot go wrong with the Pulse concert performances. Every one is a gem and a masterpiece, and for the most part are fuller, more vibrant and more a multidimensional experience than the studio recordings, which are also all uniformly great and memorable in their own right. There are a few exceptions, most notably Clare Torrey's vocal performance on The Great Gig in the Sky from the Dark Side of the Moon, which has never been equaled, not even by Clare herself, but I'm sure your commenters will steer you right on those.

Pink Floyd have always been an amazing live band, and things don't get much better than this! Run Like Hell follows this as an encore, and that's also quite a spectacular experience, though probably not as musically stimulating as Comfortably Numb. Enjoy!
