Listen to both. :) The original has the pure studio sound, this version has some added elements, as well as the visuals. It's the next song from the album you need to react to - and not just the album version either.

Live versions are so much fun to see how they are making this music, and for simply having visuals to look at - and it’s obvious Pink Floyd is amazing at creating those visuals. But I’ll give you a significant reason to go and listen to the studio version. You should even do this video. This song melds into the next song, both musically - and importantly- thematically in such an intertwined way, that they are really two parts to one song.
The basic meaning of this song, you already mentioned in your reaction - but the form of the narrative is the progression of life. My personal thought is that the bells at the beginning are birth and the drums are childhood. But certainly, the first verse is the narrator being young with time to kill. The second he is busting his butt during middle age trying to make up for lost time and get ahead in the rat race of life, the third he is aging and winding down in a way that sounds like retirement to me, and by the end of the song, the last lines are “the tolling of the iron bell, calls the faithful to their knees, to hear the softly spoken magic spells.” Thats a church, it’s a funeral. The end of the song is his death. Time is up.
So what is the next song on the album that the music and theme just flows right to? It is an absolutely beautiful piece called “the great gig in the sky”. The afterlife. IMHO, it’s a continuation of this song. And truly, they necessitate being listened to together as one.
Maybe this perspective will inspire you to do it again with the studio version with both songs, and with this insight into the song adding some complexity and depth to the meaning and how that next song also tugs at your heartstrings.
Look forward to maybe hearing you do that. All the reactions to this song online I have seen, never include these two as one.

I’ve hypothesized that the Pink Floyd intros are designed to put the listener’s brain into a pre-determined state. For instance, in “Time” the alarms, bells and chimes confuse the brain and basically causes it to do a ‘soft’ reset. The next section slowly rebuilds a sense of order so that by the time the lyrics begin your thoughts flow in sync with the music. This technique can be found in many Pink Floyd tracks. “Shine On You Crazy Diamonds” is one of my favorite examples of this. Pink Floyd music is ‘timeless’ and will stay popular for many years to come. Thank you for your enjoyable video and enjoy your journey with this band.

[9:19] "There is one particular part of the lyric that I feel like is very 'my life'..." aaaannd she has figured out Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd is introspective, it's about life, and death, and mental health, and indulgences, and overcoming childhood trauma, and on and on.
Pink Floyd if f'ing _DEEP_ . And timeless. If you're learning about yourself, and plotting your way through life, you will catch pieces of songs, and they will spark introspection you didn't expect. And understanding.
And the composition is stellar, as is the musicianship. Since the members are writers and players and not performers, they learned early on to use lights and props to generate visual excitement. Giant pink flying pigs. Yes. Giant pink flying pigs.
The Pulse light show is in-freakin-credible. It took so long to set up and tear down that they need two fleets of trucks with two sets of equipment and two road crews to leapfrog across the country preparing the next venue while the current shows were going on. Every time they cut to the big view of the arena you gasped. Yeah. Pink Floyd.
Should you listen to the studio versions first or the live versions? Yes. Whatever the F you want. There are no rules, make yourself happy. Ignore scolds. _They_ are wrong for scolding.
Except the Golden Rule. Don't interrupt Gilmore's solos. There is a special Hell reserved for...

Most of Floyd's songs have long intros, and also an amazing guitar solo by David Gilmour. He has been performing for almost 60 years. Now at the age of 78 he will be touring again and releasing a new album in September. Please check out "High Hopes" from the pulse concert. To me, it is the most beautiful song ever . From a cognitive point of view, we see time passing as a proportion of our lives, and thus as we age, years actually do feel shorter for everybody, as they are each a smaller fraction of your memory. So this song resonates for everybody, I feel... ironically it's timeless. I could say a lot more about it, but I'll leave it there.

I had the good fortune back on July 15, 1994 to attend the Pulse concert when they performed it at the Silverdome in Detroit, Michigan. The ticket price was $32.50 (the limo from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and back was a wee bit more). Please take lots of time with Pink Floyd, it's a very large library and pretty much all good. Anything from the Pulse concert is amazing, even straight. Anyway, love your reactions, so many folks can't be quiet and what they're saying is just noise, your appropriate and timely responses are appreciated. I'm sure your card is full for a while but a couple of suggestions I have are Within Temptation - And We Run & Memories and Electric Callboy - Ratatata & F*#*boy. Cheers

This concert covers music that Pink Floyd produced over the course of 30 years and is almost a "best of" compilation. Us old folk matured with the band and their music became even more relatable and transcendental - sounds corny I know, but I can tell straight off that you have an old soul that responds to this on a deep level. Like us you will come to appreciate the reason why P.F.'s music has stood the test of "Time". They bear listening to again and again because the music nourishes your soul. My favourite from "Pulse" is still " Keep Talking" (lasers, lots of lasers!) but each song is a thing of beauty. Peace.

The intro to TIME does have several different meanings and musical perspective sides / angles built into it.
First the bells, chimes and alarm clocks......the reference to time is obvious, but also our day often starts with a set , timed alarm and bells often signify a time or significant event.
Then you have the consistent , ever present percussion that is symbolic of seconds......always their, ticking away in perfect TIME.
Then you have other instruments and even drums added to the constant rythm of the initial percussion beats.
These other sounds have no time or rhythmical pattern......as our own lives are spasmodic and by chance, with no logical pattern or timing......then eventually the song starts.
Most musicians listening to TIME for the first time, get lost in the absence of Time within the added musical notes of the intro.
All their career Timing has been of utmost importance to all quality music......but here is music they are enjoying with NO common timing.
Just as our lives, successes, failures and death are not ordained, ordered, planned or following any time structure.....and all living time comes to an end.
Here the end is The Great Gig In The Sky.
Time and The Great Gig were created to be listened to together, as one song in 2 very different parts.
Pink Floyd is a live band and normally best heard live.....but for Time and The Great Gig the original vinyl or CD is by far the best, and probably worthy of being considered at the top of all musical achievements.....from any gender and time period.

Pink Floyd is great! They perform great live. My suggestion is this: one should not listen to a live performance of a song on their first listen. Songs are meant to be enjoyed more than once and one loses something; one misses something when trying to kill two birds with one stone (i.e. hearing a song first time & hearing a band perform live).
Other than that, I'd suggest Pitselah by Elliot Smith.

Kind of a plot spoiler girls, he's not going to die, either is Grandelf as you cutely put it, or Bilbo. And a few others if you take Moria tombs into account.

i think for me like most people the first few lines mean so much.. i think most of us older generation used to hang out in certain places with our friends just wasting time having fun... for me this was in the 70's so no mobile's or internet/home computers we had a wooded area with a clearing and a swim hole we loved it.... then before you realise it you are grown up and it is all in the past...

Have a listen to the album version of this. David's solo sounds so much better on the album. The Pulse version, it gets a bit lost in the mix

When you first listen to PF always do the studio. You missed so much sonically.

LOL PPl are so sensitive on versions. Just roll with it. How can you possibly know which ver to start, but I will say this, when you find something that moves you, make time to find alt versions. Pulse is Epic b/c it offers some of the best versions of of a PF tune imo, but a few PF songs shine on studio versions (Dark Side Moon LP, Welcome to the Machine LP, The Wall LP). I do agree Time studio is special. It locks you in where you can't escape - melody, guitar solo, vocals, meaning...

You seem ready to let Pink Floyd take you down its rabbit hole. I would be honored if you would allow me to serve as your guide.
Next up: Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (PULSE Restored & Re-Edited)
And also: Pink Floyd - On the Turning Away Remastered 2019

This was good of course, however, for sheer purity and technical excellence, the studio version is much better. I was at the pulse concert and was left stunned so I am speaking as a 50 year plus fan with an entire library of Pink Floyd.

Altho Floyd's performances are great, you REALLY should ONLY listen to the studio version in _almost_ every case. That will be the artist's original sound and intent of how the song is supposed to be heard. You missed out in this example, everything on the original album this is from is a work of art in music history, one of the all time highest selling albums for a reason, hence MUST be heard in it's intended context.
Very difficult to translate a lot of music in a live setting...it has it's own appeal, but the original magic needs-needs to be heard on the studio album. It's an experience unto itself.

We can tell by watching the reactions to this song, especially, when a person misses the most important section . . . . . "ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run . . . you missed the starting gun" . . . . . you had no reaction, at all. A lot of people get caught up in the music and miss that.

"This has to mean something, surely?" Yes and no. The intro is a waste of time, or an expression of it. It has nothing to do with the rest of the song, but everything to do with the rest of the song. There's no connection, yet, it's all connected. These guys were brilliant song writers, and kick ass musicians. It may help to know that they all met up at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture. Structural wisdom at its finest.

@@JuliettJess I did read it. No offense intended. I was just in the mood for some Pink Floyd reactions tonight and was disappointed that the live version was being played. Live Pink Floyd is good. Don't get me wrong. But nothing beats Pink Floyd in the studio.
Love your channel. Keep on r'actin .

Solo is not as good as on the original studio recording!
People make mistake when they listen to live versions first - even when live versions are superior.
In the PF's case, the conceptual and Musique Concrète side of the band makes it the only right order for full appreciation.
