This baby was the loudest one of the lot (and there were many babies in this group of otters). I think the mother got tired of the baby complaining about its cleaning and she put her paw on it's mouth to silence it. So cute!
"SHE PUT HER HAND ON ITS MOUTH...! THATS AWESOME"
"shh-shut up"
*shut up, shut up JUST SHUT UP*

She was totally like "Shhhh, child, now sleep". 😂

@Zeus umm chill......it's just a joke lmao
Zeus nah shitting on the human race is a pretty easy thing to do especially when you’re just joking around about a damn video of a cute otter going hush child
Kewana Nedd yeah no that’s a whole other level... people are crazy!
It's almost like the mom was searching for the mouth of her baby, and when she finally found it she covered it, then closed her eyes like "Finally some peace and quiet!"
Lol cute af!!
Just like humans. Lmao
jajajeje!!
It’s not almost like that- it’s exactly that
Lol I thought the same 😂
A loud baby in the wild is a death sentence. Well done mum.
...I don't think it particularly matters on water where most if not all of your relevant potential predators are sight hunters.
broadbandislife Otters have natural predators. Therefore, it’s essential for them to develop the ability to silence the baby.
Well not if your predators don’t use sound to hunt. Pretty sure that’s what they were getting at.
XShadOBabeX Killer whales and lion seals don’t use sound to hunt?
broadbandislife And I question your brain, if there is any. Killer whales, the most dangerous predator to sea otters rely on sound waves to locate their prey. They don’t rely on sight to hunt. I don’t know where you get that idea from, but it’s silly to think that making loud noise in the middle of the sea will not attract any predator.
To be fair, knowing how to make your baby shut up seems like an important survival skill with orcas in the water.

It's good to know other mammals struggle with parenthood too
“You’ve been fed, cleaned, and snuggled. You need nothing else.”
I mean... He does need to go to the bathroom too, you know?
This is actually called melling it’s a thing that a lot of different otter species do when caring for their young. Basically baby otters sometimes just want to chew and suck on something like how human babies do. So the mom otter will put her hand on the babies mouth so it has something to chew on. This doesn’t hurt the mom and actually increases the health of the babies teeth, gums, and jaw muscles.
Hm the more ya know
amazing
Pawcifer! Squeeeee!
Did you make that up? Sorry, but had to ask. 🫣
@@elisaa9981 I thought you were a troll asking this given that indivenant's post sounded interesting, competent, and helpful. But I searched the web quite intensively and found absolutely nothing on this. So yes, that was probably made up.

Noisy babies in the wild is basically ringing the dinner bell for nearby predators, good job mama
The reason is not that. It is so the baby has something to gently chew on (mother's hand). It makes the baby's face, mouth, jaw muscles stronger...
It can be both.
When u hit ur younger sibling and they start to cry so u try to shut them up but u already hear ur parents footsteps nearing and u close ur eyes and accept ur fate
No matter what kinda of mom.... the job its always the same
except for snakes and lizards
Because they either leave or eat them
the job is to shut your kid up? I dont think so.
The mom: there’s where sound is coming from. Plug it!
Baby sounded like a leaking balloon! 😆
Damn you, RUclips algorithms. Showing me pictures of baby sea otters, knowing I can't resist. It's a devious cycle, dammit.
I find it so amazing how alike mothers are no matter their species lol
When mothers want to sleep but kids don't allow.
The commentator: “shut up.” Lol 😂
baby otter: help this isn’t my mother, i’ve been kidnapped
adult otter: shuttup and look cute for the humans kid
The final, lengthy squeak right before she puts her paw over baby's mouth is what really gets me 😂

Omg lol! She knows how to be a mother! Aww the squeaking! So cute!
she knows how to be a mother, wtf does that even mean. It's Nature you adapt in a way that is almost natural.
Nixon Rexzile please don’t throw trash in the comment sections ..
They're even cute when they're crying babies
@Jackson DeCourcy Not too cute for the mother though... could be potential death
I never seen a momma cover her Young's mouth before XD
E105_Alpha you had very nice parents then
Same, but they just had other ways of shutting me up (that weren't so nice)
She needs mum time🤣😂
To be fair, it's a solid survival strategy to be able to do that. Otters do have natural predators in the wild, being able to quickly shut the pup up must be a useful ability.
It happens all the time, even now as an adult...😞
LMAO did she really put her hand over his mouth? I’m doneee😩😂😂😂😂
Just common sense which people like humans have a few decades ago
Her covering his mouth and closing her eyes speaks volumes, I think I just got closure as a mom
She was tired and frustrated, trying to get him right, and his insistent crying, she almost....
The quiet “sh-shut up” at the end oh my glob LOL
Maybe her paw acts like a dummy (pacifier)?
Yes!
To an extent but it was also a message from mamma otter. STFU because I need to fluff up your fur so you are prepared for the sea while I hunt for food. Once you are buoyant you can do as many "nyahs" as you like.
@@liamg2271 Its more a pacifier, if she was adamant about grooming his fur she wouldve continued to do so after giving him her paw in his mouth instead of just lying down. I do wonder if it helps the pup to gnaw on it for teething too.
THOT Patrol I agree- I think the baby might get comfort from sucking on the paw, but I think mom is more worried about seals or sharks hearing the noise and coming in for an easy fluffy baby otter snack, since a crying baby is a good indicator that the baby could be alone and vulnerable.
Oh... 😮
Fussy baby. So sweet
They are so smart I love them.
_"You're embarassing me in front of the humans. Shush."_
Every parent can relate to this.
The end with her eyes closing was perfect just saying finally I can sleep
Maybe this is her way of comforting the pup.
wow this is amazing how our instincts as parents arent to far apart
"Shush! An orca might hear you! Are you trying to get us killed, kid?!?"
Doesn't matter the species, all moms know how to quiet their kids.

That was adorable as heck btw
She may be doing that to protect her and baby...from humans...not to draw attention to them...then she acts like she's sleeping. =D Bless them both...hope they're both safe and happy! Otter moms are super moms! 💗💗
