Welcome to an OS that doesn't screw you by itself with it's AI bullshit, now to install Arch without using the archinstall script...
you know its not really that bad to do if you follow a youtube tutorial (obligatory i use arch btw)

Rolling back to Windows 10 as a protest also helps with no AI anything right now copilot is only an option on Windows 10 and there's no more upgrades to it either security updates will remain in effect until 2025 but so far I am being sucked into Garuda Dragonized which is a MacOS clone with KDE Plasma all available emulators including steam is automatically installable through Garuda Gamer with no effort of learning Linux what so ever if that's what your goal is the environment is based on CyberPunk you will be rewarded with a tasty CyberPunk 2077 type feeling when you try it out especially with the Dragonized candy theme and candy icons to give it a more modern look than Windows 11 ever will be Microsoft should face the facts if they don't want to listen to their customers then we will show them we have the power by leaving.

Welcome aboard! I really like to see someone who actually tries to figure out things on linux by themselves when making the switch. People usually say: "too hard and messy" and give up not even giving it a chance.

Though I'll probably be switching to Fedora KDE for Wayland for my Arc card
I personally have to learn how to take better care of my installed distro, but yeah, it is so much better in some things that I'd never go back if I could avoid the one or two things that don't work on linux.

Honestly, thank god I tried linux mint on my laptop. After using mint for a week in college I can definitely say I *can* use linux for college as an animation student. Valve picking up wine and making proton with it is such a cool thing. Currently I daily drive fedora cinnamon on my main rig. Heck, I even tried making an entire avatar for VRChat right on fedora. Though my only gripe left with linux is how some vr games perform, especially Half-Life: Alyx where the animations are playing much faster than intended and the steam vr UI colors are inverted, though these don't happen on VRChat. For like the past several months, my windows installation has been in the background while I use fedora for daily tasks now.
Yeah, vr stuff might work better in windows but its so awesome to get working in linux from time to time

Linux VR bugs can be silly sometimes. My favorite is No Mans Sky having all text be white in one eye and red in the other (this is a frequent bug).

I wasn't able to make firealpaca/medibang pressure sensitivity work on linux, don't think it's currently possible, would probably need some fixing in wine. Tho I was also using CSP, which surprisingly works with pressure sensitivity on linux, but not on wayland unfortunately. So I started to switch my workflow to krita, which I can use after moving the panels and setting it up with CSP shortcuts and bindings, which are available on newest version as a preset, just need some fixing with zooming shortcuts.

ive been using linux off and on since forever! its really neat! with my quest 3 its a little more setup to be wireless but its good!

Valve is incredible they neglect the most influential game for 5 (sorry 7) years and still adding monetizations to the game (Team Fortress 2)

Hell ye brother, Linux is where it's at. I swapped over 5 months ago and after a small learning curve, it's been fantastic.
The number one reason I love Linux is because of intent. The intent of the Linux devs is to make a great operating system, while the intent of Microsoft is to make money.
I am trying to switch to linux for a little while, but im still stuck with windows for some things such as photoshop for drawing and being able to share screen on discord with audio. I wanna learn krita, but when i tried I couldn't do my lineart well, i find the stabilizer tool on photoshop just works well for me.
I love linux for how much it can teach you about computers, and let you screw with whatever, make your computer truly.

welcome to the team mate. what i would say, for the stuff you need windows for just run a vm or have a seperate drive with a windows install and keep it minimal so you dont fall back to it. thats my strat anyway as vr is still a bit finicky under linux plus beat saber latest has bugs under proton

Ahh another Linux user. I need to try it on my main rig again, but it didn't go well the last 3 times.
Edit: Some good starter distros are Mint, Kubuntu, and Pop!_OS. It's best if dual booting to make a second drive, Windows has a habit of playing dirty with Linux and breaking it when you update Windows.

I have a hp stream 14 note book I could install Debian 12 LXDE orbs mate the full desktop of it I can install it on my desktop pc that I’m putting together ☺️
I always like to customize things on Debian or Linux
I also started with Linux Mint,switched to Ubuntu and Now im Using Garuda Linux which is great for Gaming but theres some things I have to figure out yet.

See if you can run your Windows hold-outs in a virtual machine. If you can, you can ditch that extra partition.
I make use of a Windows XP virtual machine for dealing with an old scanner that doesn't work properly on Linux, and not at all on newer versions of Windows.

I've recently installed Linux Mint onto my pc and converted it to dual boot now to swap between OS's. I'm transitioning to just move over to Linux and still figuring it all out, but so far I know Clip Studio Paint is not compatible with Linux and I don't know if Ableton for music is also compatible. But seeing you in VR on linux makes me happy and gives me hope for the future :)
When in doubt, run it through Steam (I should actually try this with my art program, I hadn't thought of it)
Interesting. I always had lots and lots of issues with getting VR to work properly.

My main issue was getting the mic to work correctly, and even after getting it to work it's been a 50/50

Dualbooting never worked for me windows shits on the bootloader everytime idk why so now i have an old ass 24gb hard drive with 99+ warnings to boot windows when needed

@@enotikbteplovoze I have a 32 bit laptop from 2006 without a working trackpad i use now mainly for storage reasons, and I got debian on there with i believe xfce desktop environment, which is the lightest weight one there is. Granted it's a bit better than that with 2 gb ram (dont remember the cpu)
Debian is solid all around but theres probably a more barebones distro with a more barebones desktop environment out there though
Frankly im not a super linux nerd I just know mint and debian lol, my knowledge beyond is just "other distros exist" i dont actually know the differences

FireAlpaca doesn't suck on Linux... It just doesn't have Linux support, that's very different. It's not a Linux problem, it's a developers problem bro xD.
My tip for you is, stop trying to move your workflow to Linux, you will get frustrated with the things that does not work AND limit yourself to what you know on Windows, stop using Wine and start using AlternativeTo (like using Codium is way better for me than Microsoft's version).
And btw, the "i don't like the way it feels" thing... You know you can even change the themes on your bootloader, right? Unixlike systems aren't systems to have a "one size fits all" out of the box, is a "do it your way and i will never change it" kind of thing, the same goes for the applications, Krita supports lots of customization options and scripts.
And thank you for telling new users to use Mint instead of Manjaro or something.

@@see-sharp True, it is a dev problem, but as for the not liking how it feels I mean the actual act of drawing in the app itself, one of those things you cant really point out. Otherwise though everything else I do works perfectly fine on Linux (and its fun getting frustrated anyways, im a game dev lol)

If people have a PC with enough RAM and CPU cores (as well as disk space), they could setup a virtual machine to try out linux in that, not installing it "for real", so without any risk. That way they can practice the installation, using it, trying different beginner-oriented distributions.
Then, later on, they could try it for real once they feel confident enough :)

Also I would recommend dual boot Linux with windows if you possibly can people aren't taking advantage of that using virtual machine is fine but gaining actual Linux experience might be very beneficial. Most things you use in Windows will have either a way to run in linux or an open source alternative. And as a tip you can add any program to steam and use proton with it, in case wine doesnt work well on whatever program

Dual booting is easy enough, you just have to switch back every time you need to use adobe/vr

Personally I use brave just because the built in ad blocking and tracker blocking works great out of the box (and it's open source)

Oh my god yes, I just havent been able to, but from online tests I've done, while they arent official diagnoses, theres a very good chance I both have adhd and am on the autism spectrum lol
