This essay is a little overdue. Recently, the Chenyu Vale section of Liyue released in Genshin Impact. In my opinion, this one addition changed the open-world map in a significant way - that is to say, it finally opened up an alternate path for map traversal, rather than forcing the player through distant bottlenecks. Here I explain why I think that matters in the first place, what it means to an open world if anything, and what it could possibly mean to new players.

I never thought I would subscribe to a country cowboy's channel about his opinions on fantasy maps and Genshin Impact, but here we are

I can understand your opinion given the episodic nature of the game it can feel railroaded at times. As frustrating as that is though I personally don't have an issue with the borders and bottlenecks given that there's so much to explore unfortunately no world is truly open, not even that one star game thats so big that it would need at least two lifetimes to complete. There's always eventually going to be borders... Any way enjoy your new paths. Cheers dude

That is a fair point, there is truth to what you said. Hardly any world is truly open. I think it being episodic does add to the feeling I have too, as you suggested. I played long times, daily before as well - I more or less "kept up with the game", meaning that even exploration for me happened in waves cause I could legit run out places to explore. I did take a small break from the game though for a couple/few months, and after that, quite a bit of exploration piled up for me - it was bad around when the last desert expansion came. I've been pacing myself ever since coming back, and ever since then, I've yet to run out of things to explore. The break was the best thing to happen for me exploration-wise, as it gave the map time to pile up with content for me. That in itself helped the world feel more open to me, too.
      Good points

honestly that was a great video and i feel the exact same way, chenyu vale was like the last puzzle piece that made genshin truly feel really open world, atleast when looking at the map.
btw. in some points of the video, the in game music was going a bit too hard or the ingame sounds were drowning out your voice, might wanna turn down the bgm volume in the future, or better yet, mute yout ingame music, turn down the sfx a bit, and manually play some of the more relaxing genshin bgm, like for example at 4:20
    👍

I was wondering how many people actually felt the way I did about Chenyu Vale, it's really cool to hear others thought the same way. :D
Thanks so much for the criticism/suggestion about the volume levels too, that's a big help. Whether I'm making videos or making tunes, volume mixing is tricky for me (I blame the cookie bite hearing loss lmao). Comments like yours will help me to make cleaner presentations. 🙏🏾
Happy you enjoyed it despite the audio hiccups! :)

I completely agree about the map! I'm obsessed with looking at the borders and guessing how things will layout. I think once the game map is completed ill have to try exploring it all over again! Loved the video happy to see someone as passionate as me about the borders and map layout 😅❤

Awesome. It's cool to learn after uploading this that there are others like me.
I totally hear you on exploring the map again. I've often said that late-stage newcomers to the game might have the best time, since they'll have the entire game to explore at once. That has to be a totally different kind of experience.
      Thanks for your comment C:

I definitely agree. At the same time though, it's the previous existence of these limitation that has made seeing these new regions and holes fill up so satisfying. While Inazuma definitely feels isolated now, I think that can change. I believe when we get Blackcliff Forge and the southern tip of Liyue, it's very possible they will give us active moving boats across from Port Ormos to Liyue to Inazuma and even Dornman Port, connecting those parts of the worlds a little more. I was also disappointed by not being able to go from Yilong Wharf to Lumidouce Harbor (even wrote about it in one of the surveys lol) but I also believe we will get it eventually. I believe we don't have it at the moment because it will also be connected to northern Mondstadt (probably via Dornman Port. Or perhaps the river that Klee blew up will be opened back up.)
Chenyu has been the highest quality region so far for multiple reasons, and it's amazing there's enough to talk about it from the perspective of open world alone. I think part of the reason is that lore-wise it also serves as a trading route in the same way players can use it as an alternative route.

Wow I’ve never found someone that is so similar to me in regards to how fascinated with maps and the map expanding as me! I’ve always tried to explain it to my friends but no one ever really understood my excitement. But you totally get it and explained it so well!

I remember taking screenshots at the borders of liyue before and after the sumeru update and it was so cool to see how the land changed. The out of bounds areas that are on the outside of nation borders are one of the most interesting parts of Genshin to me-maybe because of the fact that they are unexplorable through normal gameplay. That which is out of reach is always more alluring..

RUclips placed this on my recommended and I put it on without expecting it to be much, but this was super nice to listen to while I drew. (Well, aside from those couple audio errors starting sometime around 14:00 onward) I came in shortly after Inazuma released, (or maybe before it? I don't really remember, I think Kazuha's banner was up when I did.) So seeing someone from 1.0 (!!!) talk about it and give their perspective on the map releases was really interesting, and I hadn't thought much of the constant westward sumeru expansion before this, but I found myself relating to you anyway because you put it into words. The trek from Mondstat to Fontaine *is* super long, and Ive walked the entire way there on a second account just to see if I could (well, and to gloat and have my friends ask Why i would do that HAHA), and while it was fun in it's own way, I did turn off the game and rested for a while because it was genuinely exhausting. When Chenyu Vale released I felt a momentous relief, and then excitement. Not only because chenyu vale was beautiful, but because it opened the door for so many questions like: What's in that big void circle? What does the border of Sumeru and Fontaine look like? Will an expansion there be like Enkanomiya, or the Chasm? Whatever happens there, I'll be excited for it. It'll be so viscerally satisfying to see that part of the map filled in. The map really does feel locked in place now, rather than being a nebulous void, or like a weird googly eyed goldfish if you zoom out far enough.
anyway good essay 👍 I really liked your voice, it's very calming, and I could probably listen to you go on about this game for hours. (Sorry about the unbroken block of rambly adhd text lol)

Happy to know RUclips is throwing my vids to peoples' recommended haha. Apologies about any audio errors though, oof.
That void in the middle of the map will really paint the picture for the rest of the map. I wonder how much of it will be Sumeru's northern sea border, or will it mostly be water. I dunno, but I'm with you completely, that's going to be a super exciting part to fill in. :DD But hopefully it's sooner rather than later. Now that it's landlocked though, maybe it will be sooner!
I appreciate you listening to me yap on about the game's map lol, and thank you for both the comment and compliment. Very encouraging :D

LOL, true! It's time Hoyo. Give us mounts. Yesterday.
The fact that Kaeya's title is even "Cavalry Captain" is absolutely insane. It's been literal years, haven't seen this guy riding anemo slime, let alone a horse.

Why did you make a 20 minute on the map? And then title it chenyu vale but then ramble aimlessly on obvious stuff the entire time. I don’t think RUclips is your thing buddy, sorry.

    • @PsQueak2
      @PsQueak2  6 месяцев назад +4

I'll try to answer your question(s) as fairly as I can.
The opening rambles are to contextualize why to me, Chenyu Vale "completes" the map more so than previous updates. So, I mention the Mondstadt and Liyue borders because early on, that's all we had. I mention Inazuma because its isolationism and distance made it feel less like an expansion. I mention the Chasm and Romaritime Harbor bottlenecks because they made the on foot travel feel too linear. It was these opinions that I could then use to compare to Chenyu Vale's inclusion, but without setting those up first, the context of why I value Chenyu Vale has little personal backdrop to compare to.
As for it being obvious stuff, I can't fully agree, since the essay is about personal value/opinion. The only facts presented are the timelines of different map releases. But the rest is just why I did or didn't value them geographically. Different people may or may not think Chenyu Vale's significance to the current geography matters much though, so I'm of the belief that my opinion itself might not be obvious either.
As for why I made the 20 minute essay in general, the feeling I got from the new map was significant enough that I wanted to chronicle my thoughts on it, and explore for myself why I thought it was cool. Hence why at the bottom of the video description, it says : "Essay style: Opinion, Analytic, Praise"
That's as well as I can explain 👍🏾
