i think N, probably the single most popular trainer in the entire set (unless they’re secretly printing like. ingo’s pokemon) having the worst pokemon lineup is. really funny. and you just know SOMEONE’S gonna make this guy work
I know we have Megas potentially on the way and trainer's Pokemon seem to be the new gimmick for the foreseeable future, but losing ace specs for good is such a bummer. I think they were my favorite part of every new set release.
While it was always interesting to see what new ace specs came out, it's not really a good mechanic. Most decks just run Prime Catcher and call it a day, and the more interesting designs could generally be reworked to not be ace specs. Also, having your Ace Spec prized tends to be overly punishing, and isn't something you can really play or build around.
@@shelby142idk man, a couple months ago I'd agree with you, but in the last week I encountered exactly 1 prime catcher in about 40 games But personally I like the gimmick and love having them all stacked in a binder like a special tool set
It feels like they got cold feet half way through for some reason. They have pieces with powerful potential like Lillie's Pearl and N's Zoroark, but then realized how scary they could be if the accompanying deck actually had good cards to pair them with.
It kind of defeats the purpose of constructing a deck if the designers make your deck for you, which is kind of what these archetypes are doing. I suspect they're half-baked by design to compensate for that, but Hop just came out a little strong. I'm hoping that they get some indirect support in future sets.
@@shelby142 Indeed, it's a rough thing to balance, but some archetypes simply feel too pigeonholed to be able to depend on combining with other cards. If the purpose of N's cards is to fill your bench with N pkmn and use Zoroark as a boss monster, then it's just a very suboptimal boss monster. It feels like Zoroark would be better used as a draw engine in any other deck, completely wasting every other support that the archtype has received.
@@BoredKuro They are a bit pidgeonholed, but they also just need little support (and opportunity, i.e. the right meta) to make them effective. Like, I think Lillie's Pokémon actually have a lot of potential. Clefairy ex hits for 180-280 (technically -340), but is also supereffective against any dragons, e.g. Dragapult, which it'll generally OHKO. Comfey is like a Precious Trolley that doesn't use up your Ace Spec slot, and Ribombee (while probably not necessary) makes Clefairy do more damage while potentially giving you valuable gust targets. Naturally Clefairy will benefit from Area Zero Underdepths, so you'll run one or more Tera Pokémon...so any Psychic Teras we get could massively buff the archetype. Also, Gardevoir still exists, and could be used to cheat out energy to keep your attackers going really efficiently, and with 4 pearls you can deny your opponent 4 prizes, which is kind of crazy. N has some potential too. With all of the draw engines and (especially) energy cheat we're losing with rotation, even a janky Radiant Greninja (Zoroark + Darmanitan) isn't anything to sneeze at. With some stage 1 support, that engine could be worthwhile on its own in the right deck. Reshiram is any easy include if it's ever relevant. And Iono is just kind busted, if not for Voltorb being kinda mediocre, so she may see immediate play with Raging Bolt, if not as her own deck. She really doesn't need much more than she's got, so I could easily see her being meta relevant if practically any meaningful synergy is printed (especially something that can make use of the energy on her Pokémon, like Raging Bolt and her Voltorb do).
@@Kassiddy I mean, most of the cards in every set are unplayable (competitively), and even the playable ones don't make up a whole (competitive) deck on their own. Being "parasitic" (using explicit synergies) does limit them a bit, but I think each of them has potential, and I don't think it's really that different from other sets. And they're also not the whole set... I'm excited for Mamoswine ex, personally...
Hop and Iono are well designed archetypes, imo. I don’t know who forgot to put the sauce in for N and Lillie but they definitely need something better than what we are getting. Maybe the next set will have some Trainer cards that are blanket supports for Trainer’s Pokemon? Legacy Energy + Lillie’s Pearl on Lillie’s Clefairy ex giving no prize on knock out is really funny to me, tho.
I think Lillie is actually pretty good. If there's enough dragons in the meta (e.g. Dragapult), I think she crushes as-is. Otherwise, if there's even just one good Psychic Tera to combo with her Pokémon and Area Zero Underdepths, I could see it becoming a meta-relevant deck. Denying the opponent 4 prize cards isn't nothing, Comfey's Precious Trolley attack is a solid setup, and hitting for 180-280 for 2 energy on what is effectively a 1-prizer is pretty good.
In N’s Darm’s defense, Zoroark getting access to moonlight shuriken in a manaphy-less meta for 2 Dark is still pretty neat. It’s just clunky compared to Rad Gren due to it requiring 2 stage 1’s.
To be fair, Radiant Greninja is broken, so maybe N's got a chance. Plus he has effectively Dark Patch post rotation, when we lose most of our good energy cheat. I could definitely see it being part of a rogue or even meta deck, if only as that combo...and maybe assuming there's some new stage 1 support. That's the biggest issue with it for sure.
Every time a new set comes out for a while now, you have been calling them disappointing or underwhelming. In my opinion, it's a good thing as it seems like they finally decided to do something against the power creep. If the power level won't jump up suddenly in the near future and once Charizard ex rotates out, maybe one-shots could become less likely, enabling us to use these cards that were previously underwhelming.
I'm actually pretty happy with this set and the direction pokemon is taking the tcg. I don't think many of these cards will be good on launch however I don't think that's the point. A lot of these cards are noticeably worse than current and I think lowering the overall power level is a good thing. If they keep heading in this direction especially if the power level keeps decreasing I imagine these will be very strong cards in 2-3 rotations
I imagine more trainer Pokémon will be released in the following sets, there's no way N's Pokémon are this bad. Btw, I think Brock's Scouting may be a good card if item lock becomes a thing. There's not too many ways to search for Pokémon without using items.
But they have they don't have the H-Block mark, they have the G-Block mark. Which means that unless they get reprinted sometime this year in the I-Block or get reprinted in the first set of the J-Block then Professor's Research will rotate out in 2026.
As much as I dislike Yu-Gi-Oh!, having a bunch of cards that are clearly meant to be played together and being free to build to your own style is just fun game design.
I’m still pretty new to the game so any new cards are interesting to me. I’m kinda tired of seeing Charizard EX every other game on tcg live. Anyway, new cards mean new strategies, even if they’re rogue decks. Those are kind of my favorites.
People should stop buying boosters until they stop bloating sets with unplayable cards. Or they should release two types of boosters: a collectors and a competetive version!
Trainer's pokemon are such an annoying idea as it creates a lot of cards that are only viable in one deck archetype And it's not even like a lost box archetype which can use every pokemon, it's just a handful of pokemon that can interact with a handful of trainers I am also a huge hop hater and I consider him the worse trainer created by the pokemon company so I'm fuming to see this annoying character being meta defining
Deck-e-due-ee is diabolical lmao
there's no way "N's PP Up" will be named that in Journey Together
It is an item from the games so it is possible lol
@@Victini0510idk man, they've censored much less haha, but yeah any way they use pp will be problematic 🤣
could you imagine if it was Lillies or Marnies?
@@preemptivefaceplant5277 I suspect the internet's been imagining that since long before the set was announced.
If they don't, is that acknowledgement that there's something wrong with the name of an item that's been in every game 🤔

would a deck that uses zacian as attacker and zoroark as draw support be good?
I don't mind it being a little underwhelming, not everything needs to be a banger. I feel like the most popular card is going to be Hops Zacian.
