summary: brakence ruined hyperpop by being super awesome and breaking and rewriting the boundaries of music itself. and then everyone was like "dude that's so cool!" and tried to copy him but aren't good enough so everything is like "brakence: walmart version" now.
it feels that way, but more so he does it the best so you can see people bite his style. His emotional voice cracks sound realer, relative to a glaive who doesnt do it as well, so most of the artists come off formulaic whereas brakence' music comes off feeling like music to match the genre, rather than writing for a genre, and saying everything thats been said. everybody is "cold", alone, crazy, insane, sad, both, low self esteem etc. but a great example of this is one of glauves best songs three wheels. everything about the song feels good except the words that lead into the chorus and the opening to the song. These guys tend not to be the GREATEST writers Brakence is an excellent writer. the old songs hit, but you can tell people who chose this genre because of who they are and what their musical leanings are, compared to brakence who feels like theyre copying HIM when brakence isnt hyperpop the genre, but he FEELs like he is hyperpop. brakence and the genre are one its hard to see it differently. for another example, underscores spoiled little brat. Very good, catchy but formulaic lol
I'm flat out just not calling Brakence hyper-pop anymore, Hypochondriac is something else entirely. Some of suggested glitch-hop but honestly, part of the point of the album was mocking the idea of genre. I don't think I'm ready to give up on genres, I think categorization is too useful, but I'm willing to entertain the argument. And also the guy's a fucking genius and I need more.
id say glitch pop is pretty accurate. Some songs are more pure-pop like the title track, and most songs have a pop structure (with a few exceptions). What makes it different is the vocal effects and the glitching sounds as well as the messy percussion
It's crazy how some many other artists now are replicating Brakence's style , as I'm pretty sure Brakence is heavily influenced by the artist called EDEN, thier voices, sound and online image are pretty similar, it's cool that this kind of music is now getting more popular, as before Brakence, EDEN was the only artist I can think of with that style of production
also I forgot to add one of his songs in hypnagogia literally has a lyric straight from eden's song but I forgot which one, he also has similar flows in his early music
brakence truly is the only artist i’ve never gotten tired of. no matter how many times i listen to his music i just get goose bumps. even his early discography makes me just ascend.
honestly when i first heard brakence i instanly fell in love with him, but i never really thought his music was hyperpop, there was just something different about it idk
Solid vid. Hyperpop has fallen into this very cliche trend of *only* using high-pitched or incredibly autotuned vocals drowned out by colorful production. There are thankfully a few artists who have drifted from this and actually have solid voices and original production, but Brakence is genuinely on a different level/thought process what it comes to this. I know Brakence doesn't really embody Hyperpop specifically anymore given what his new music offers genre-bending-wise, but whatever he is doing is phenomenal, and I can't wait to see what he has in stores in the future.
A lot of the reason for the high-pitched and autotuned vocals is hyperpop as a genre is dominated by trans/queer artists. The overall experimental nature of the genre and open-mindedness of (most of) the hyperpop community lends itself nicely to artists modulating their voice to almost cartoony levels so trans folks can produce music without dealing with the dysphoria their raw vocals gives them. Think laura les (fka osno1) and her squeaky, distorted vocals on most of her hyperpop tracks. One of her first songs, "how to dress as human" is more of a midwest-emo style song delving into her struggles with trying to pass. As she grew more confident as an artist, she dropped the vocal effects altogether and began to play around more with different genres and her vocal expression (think 10000 gecs.)
Randy did the impossible when it came to hypochondriac. my music taste has NEVER been the same afterwards. I just kept on listening and listening until it hit me, hypochondriac isn't a combination of different songs (it pretty much is but still) it's a story and every song had something to say.
Absolutely excellent video, it actually covered a lot of things I've been thinking since hypochondriac but haven't known how to express. I used to think Brakence was hyperpop but this album has totally flipped my perspective. I was creating a hyperpop playlist and I wasn't sure if Brakence should be included, it didn't feel right but I didn't know why.
If you are a producer, don t fall into the trap of creating one genre of music, make melodies based on your feelings and then you will find your own sound 👀
God its such a strange feeling to be part of this "community" since 2018, 9tails etc . Seeing people likebrakence, glaive, ericdoa, osquinn growing and growing. And everything you say I know it, like yeah I was there when it was realeased
brakence kept playing on my recommended spotify during 2020 in lockdown, He literally had me in a chokehold from that point onwards desperate to hear what was coming next, I thought this video was going to be dragging brakence from the title but its actually really well put together, nice job!
i never thought of brakence as hyperpop, his shit transcended the genre entirely. his rise definitely had a large impact on the scene though. he kinda paved the way and then hyperpop flourished in his wake.
Great video overall. The background history was well researched. I wanna say channels like scroll忍 , Biteki びてき, Toxicアニメ have done wonders for artists like him alike and helped warped my most recent music tastes.
Unpopular opinion: I think Brakence is indeed a new wave of Emo Pop Rock. I like that description because it doesn’t necessarily box him in to any rules. “Emo” is vague. “Pop” is vague. “Rock” is vague. No point in trying to reverse engineer to define it.
I remember finding brakence back in 2018 cos the Eden subreddit kept talking about his voice lmao. it’s crazy how far he’s gone, and how much people bite his style he’s too good
Great vid brother! The thing that really scared me and made me delay the opening of my little channel, is that actually I don't want people to think I'm "copying" somebody and I was scared by judgement. Of course I do inspire on somebody, but I do what I do because it heals me. I'm happy for Brakence because he (with EDEN before him) created a sound that I really like. Even tho EDEN has a special place in my heart together with Witt Lowry (different genre), I like the idea that he tried to explain us , that there's no need to fit in a "concept" (genre). I feel that genre is just useful to hep us to know what we are talking about , not really the "fit in the box" concept. Anyway, great video, keep it up!
I rememeber how I discovered Brakence back in june 2020. Been fan ever since, his music is something so special that eveybody tries to recompose it but cant do it like him.
His music feels like an evolution of neurotrancy stuff like Asa, Oyeme, Frequent, and Culprate but with vocals and midwest emo vibes. I've never even called it Hyperpop.
Beautiful documentary, worded so well and was so well put together i loved this. It really does explain who brakence is and what he is doing and i am all in for it.
Hilarious that Brakence said he wanted to be like Skrillex cause the way he’s being blamed for ruining hyperpop after being a big part of its blow up is identical to what happened with skrillex and dubstep.
Great video tho i feel the title is a bit misleading at 1st sight like i get it now but 1st seeing it i was like wtf this dude trippin idk maybe youre actually a genius to get people to watch this video lmao
hyperpop now seems like it's used as an umbrella to envelop so many awesome genres that really should just be classified outside of hyperpop at this point, like glitchcore and digicore
brakence re invented hyper pop period he ain’t ruin nothin just cause people gravitate towards his sound more than “regular hyper pop” is just that as well as other “hyper pop” artist not being and sounding as good as him or even close
brakence is such a genre-boundary-breaking musician, I can't wait to hear what he does next with music it doesn't even need to "one-up" hypochondriac or punk2, just do something different and that will be enough I think porter's new music is a good example of that, he's not doing the same shit exactly the same twice and I appreciate that in artists, always keeping it fresh
Some of these young artists that are breaking barriers blow my mind. The talent and unrelentless raw talent unfurling new genres is such a breath of fresh air.

As a listener, genres can help categorize things, but I’m talking more from a creative pov. Like artists shouldn’t conform to rules of a genre
