Thats wonderful Perry but now that you've popped your cherry It's time to take a deep long dive into your "Weird" aunts record collection. Don't come up for air until the music's pegged you into submission & you're set free finally.
this album is so intimately American but she's just so good at her craft that really anyone can relate to it even without knowing the Southern Gothic inspiration or other references she makes.
Dude I found her by stumbling across Ptolemaea. And that song literally changed the definition of what music could be for me. The flies buzzing referencing Beelzebub and how the insect sounds are the beat and play right into the sounds of the instruments. How the notes in the music itself are atonal which is the type of music used in horror movies (specifically demon possession movies). And that's not even going into the lyrics and the meaning and symbolism and references in them! That song blew my mind. I wish she would do more atonal and sirenesque songs like that! I want more that integrate sounds of nature into the music itself
I feel like “sun bleached flies” was a perfect way to describe the people she loves that are still stuck in the cult of religion. It makes you feel sad after hearing her follow up with “waiting for the day they’d escape” kind of like how a fly gets stuck in window desperately trying to escape and how she mentions “dancing with the windows open” makes me feel as though she’s trying open the window to save others from corruptness. The lyricism and storytelling is absolutely amazing. Definitely one of my all time favorite songs.
"The cult of religion". It brings me sorrow to see people see religions as prisons rather than sources of insight and wisdom. The interpretations are up to people, as are the practices, and many a time they (some religions more than others) practice in a way that causes harm. However, others make acts of greatness, give love, and breathe life to others because of their beliefs. Surely you can't believe religion as a whole is a cult, right?
@@rynun7620 Christianity and every branch of it is a cult as a whole. There is millions upon millions of documented evidence to prove this throughout history as well. The entire religion was purposely created to gain control, power and money over the majority of the population considering brainwashing people is proven to be one of the greatest weapons in human history. Individually, people practice however they want to practice and if you practice any religion without weaponizing it or harming others with it then you are the 1% of the entire Christian religion.
@@jrm4625 that's...an interesting take. I get the bad rep of Christianity and the cult-like aspects in a majority of denominations, but I'm talking about the concept of religion in general. You called it a cult. Clearly you despise the abrahamic religions (as does pretty much every fan of Ethel Cain)...but what about Hinduism? What about the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama or the belief of the Tao and Shinto? Are those religions all cults to you too?
@@rynun7620 you must be new to Hayden’s music and you must be new to the concept/story of Ethel Cain as a character. In this conceptual album Ethel is escaping from the Christian religion (the baptist church). This is the only religion I am referring to considering it is the only religion that is relevant to Ethel.

What a beautifully made homage to one of my favorite artists right now.... I could say SO much about her. But here's one small thing..... Ethel/Hayden made me fall in love with SUMMER. I used to HATE the summer. I've always been an autumn/winter introvert. The approach of summer would make me feel anxious. Hot humid sweaty dusty....too raw. But....Ethel's music _and_ interviews and livestreams etc have 100% changed my mind. It's literally recontextualized an entire SEASON in my mind....which is kinda crazy tbh. But I'm genuinely grateful to her for that. I can't wait for the summer of 2023 now.... =) btw....that's SO cool that she's touring with Caroline Polachak....another iconic human being. In Ethel's KEXP interview she mentioned how she adores these larger than life, yet oddball, women in music who create....worlds. Caroline is one of those people. As is her own idol...Florence Welch. I would add to that list...Aurora. My own creative muse and the closest thing to a real life Bodhisattva I've ever come across.
Ethel's music does feels like a dog day at the end of summer. Never thought to put a season to her music. Love that she and Caroline are friends and I adore Flo and Aurora slay

Discovered her in may 2022 and then 6 months later went to her show in Berlin and honestly it was one of the best nights of my life. The way she performs and has so much stage presence while being calm and static and just kind of like a painting if that makes sense. Her music is mostly down tempo and something you'd listen on your own so its hard to expect people to dance to it and go crazy live but she pulled it off in a way where it almost felt like a church service with her being the preacher and audience her choir. Also have to flex the fact I been at the front row and had few cute interactions with her during few songs and even gave her a polaroid picture i took of her during thoroughfare :,))) In conclusion she is here to stay and she really ascended the mothers chart so easily
Crush was a really defining song of summer 2021 for me. Whilst I haven't delved deeper into her work, I think that this video gave me the push that I needed! Thank you!
been following my dear Ethel since 2019, my twin would always tell me i gave off "ethel cain" vibes and i was rly into the southern gothic era despite being from PA (like the vibe, the literature, its creeping silent horror) so she showed me her twitter and i fell in love instantly. i love ethel bc as a creepy girl it felt like there was no place for me, no one to relate to, my vibes always felt abysmal, me in long skirts and floral dresses talking about death, til i found ethel and it made me feel less alone. another girl who lived in the past and felt more connected to nostalgia than the modern world, a girl who wasnt good or pure but wanted so badly to be. shes actually the same age as me and we are both born in the month of march so idk, always felt magical to me, living at the same time as her
This video introduced me to Ethel Cain. I tried listening to some of her music, but it wasn't for me; I think I process my religious trauma differently. I hope your video introduces her to more people because she seems super talented. A House in Nebraska sounds like a haunting worship song sung in an empty building, and I like that sound. However, I don't know if it's because I know the story about the song or bc it's so haunting on it's own, but I can't. Her music is the a beautiful way to rub salt into an open wound, and I cannot.
I just discovered Ethel Cain and this album last week. I’m still fully absorbing it, and wow I’m still just absolutely blown away. A house in Nebraska has become my favorite song on the album, it’s so hauntingly beautiful. Ugh, chefs kiss on this album. Such a crazy 75 minute journey to take, but I’m so glad I listened to it. Thank you for sharing this video!!

She deserves way more coverage! I’m not necessarily interested in her becoming a charts force at all but I’d love to see her evolve into a Lana figure where there’s a vocal and somewhat big fanbase
Great video!! I started listening to her just a couple weeks ago after seeing her pop up in memes/discussions online and of course after Obama's year-end playlist. She is truly an *artist* making such beautiful, haunting, provoking music that doesn't conform to the current wave of pop. Can't wait to see what she does this year!
I love that Ethel has somehow trickled her way down to general meme discourse, a testament to her artistry and voice. I'm still laughing at Obama of all people being a stan

I think she’s such a striking artist that it’s almost all or nothing for me, I got obsessed with American Teenager then discovered the album then her earlier work. The progression towards who she is today is insane!
Literally just found her from a friend's post today. What the T-total HECK kind of amazing Rabbit Hole did I just fall down? Whew thank you for doing the work of putting together the pieces of Ethel's story. I love it!!

I remember I first found Ethel back in 2021 when she released crush as a single and I loved it but it was when I first listened inbred ( the ep as a whole but also the song specifically ) that I knew she was gonna be big.
I think I may have heard her name once, and never listened to any of her songs. My goal as a person in my 30s is to keep trying out new music instead of being so stuck in my ways. I'm going to have to check her out.
I like this record and its scenic feel. A good listen front to back and imo best on a road-trip. On your point about paying homage to other musicians. The guitar tones, vocal warmth, and storytelling makes me want to revisit Cowboy Junkies “lay it down” and “open” albums.
THANK YOU for touching on how this is very much an allegory about queer religious trauma. I feel like that really gets lost in the conversation about this album, but that's absolutely what it is.
I heard a couple of tracks and was really interested. Then you said she sampled Title Fight for a track?? One of my fave bands. I will now deep dive into her music.

Tbh it is kinda scary being amongst the first to really love an artist and seeing their fanbase grow, I was a very early Angel (Charli XCX stan) way back in her MySpace days and sorta hate what Atlantic did with her Sucker onwards
I remember finding out about her thanks to her live on r/indieheads back before her feat with florence welch, her DSCVR VEVO and stuff and i immediately felt she was going to become one of my favourite artists, lol one sleepless night listenning to all her music since her Anhedonia/White Silas era, i can confirm i was right, we're so lucky to live in such an interesting time of queer art and music
3:01 where that church is is very very close to me (like 10 mins away) and in her most recent youtube video of her going to the church since she found the keys, she actually went to an antique mall only 10 minutes away as well and some houses i even pass by!! it’s so cool to know someone made something like that here and just inspires me so much!! i gotta go to the places and get in my ethel core 😍

You met Mother Cain! Aaaah! That’s amazing to hear! I’m glad! (And yaaaas she’s so talented, love to see her inspire you artistically!)
I love this ARTIST so much..... Some of the best music I have heard in years..... I have to see them live....
I’m planning on going to see her at the Greek this summer!
btw....that's SO cool that she's touring with Caroline Polachak....another iconic human being.
Love that she and Caroline are friends and I adore Flo and Aurora slay
i love seeing you in ethel cain and contrapoints' comment sections, your music taste is flawless, it's crazy how you're really everywhere haha
@@ninaandsimone3854 lol...me? Thx 😁
I only recently randomly decided to rewatch Contrapoint's latest video and was shocked to see my comments got so much love. As for Aurora stuff....good lord, I'm everywhere in that fandom world lol :P
OMG so jelly you got to experience that! Like I genuinely imagine her live is just otherworldly like I saw clips on TikTok which gagged me
I agree, the Berlin show was amazing!
ethel cain is my muse. i think about her when i wake up, when i go to panera, i love ethel cain .
i’m still sad she left sky ferreira alone at the panera 😭
Crush was a really defining song of summer 2021 for me. Whilst I haven't delved deeper into her work, I think that this video gave me the push that I needed! Thank you!
I can’t recommend it enough, truly spellbinding magic!
Ethel Cain has personally helped own song writing, I love her
Love that for you!
i've been listening to preacher's daughter for a few weeks now and i love it but i had no idea about this lore omg, this is genius, MOTHER
The lore pulled me back in, like a friend of mine showed me it at a New Year’s party and I got obsessed again 😭
been following my dear Ethel since 2019, my twin would always tell me i gave off "ethel cain" vibes and i was rly into the southern gothic era despite being from PA (like the vibe, the literature, its creeping silent horror) so she showed me her twitter and i fell in love instantly. i love ethel bc as a creepy girl it felt like there was no place for me, no one to relate to, my vibes always felt abysmal, me in long skirts and floral dresses talking about death, til i found ethel and it made me feel less alone. another girl who lived in the past and felt more connected to nostalgia than the modern world, a girl who wasnt good or pure but wanted so badly to be. shes actually the same age as me and we are both born in the month of march so idk, always felt magical to me, living at the same time as her
Love to see people find an artist that speaks to their soul!
her vibe reminds me of the resident evil games where they're in texas
I love those games a lot 😭🥰
louisiana you mean
This is exactly what this album deserved 🤎
Beautifully done, as always x
Thank you!!! I wanted to do the album justice!
That's understandable. I'm still glad you gave her a shot!
Thank you for watching! The album’s probably my favorite debut record in the last like 10 years 😭 just so much story and character!
How could it possibly be? that it's 2024 & I'm JUST discovering Ethel Cain & the genius of Hayden " " ... or whatever Moniker attached at moments - perhaps THE most compelling Person & Artist I've come across in many years. Looking for Interviews & more listening! Its fantastic to find that great Art is still happening behind all of the Nonsensical Noise that Media veils
She’s honestly being hidden away by her contract and cult appeal. Though everyone I know who discovers her adores her!
So glad u decided to cover her! I’ve been a fan since late 2019 and I’m PUMPED she’s getting the recognition she deserves
I found Ethel right when preachers daughter dropped and it changed my life. She made the top of my wrapped too
I’m in the top 1% of Ethel listeners, you have to be like in her top 0.05%
i love ethel cain so much, and i'm so glad nicole dollanganger posted about her early last year cuz i never would've found ethel had she not have
I’ve been listening to Nicole Dollanganger on recommendation from another comment on here! It’s rad she wrote about Ethel!
the first ethel cain song i heard was thoroughfare and then american teenager and it took me like three months to fully listen to ptolemaea. preacher's daughter is an album that i'll never forget. so excited for what's next
It’s a slow burn album hands-down but gosh is it an experience in full
incredible storytelling. i have 0 poetry interpretation skills so i didn’t understand any of it. thought it was beautiful. then saw Ajayy’s video and was so shocked that i had to re-listen.
love the analysis!! i've been unable to listent to anything other than preachers daughter since it droppped, seriously changed my life. legitimately never been this excited to see how the work of an artist progresses, i just know shes going to have an amazinggg career
It's a very special debut! I'm SO glad to be able to say I was there for it!
Thanks for providing such good context to her music. I was unsure why I was so obsessed with her music after just randomly discovering her music . But your explanation really clarifies it for me
I think she’s such a striking artist that it’s almost all or nothing for me, I got obsessed with American Teenager then discovered the album then her earlier work. The progression towards who she is today is insane!
I’m so glad I found her music, I haven’t experienced these types of feelings from music in a very long time, she’s brilliant
I just re-fell in love with my fav album thanks to this amazing analysis!
Love to hear it! Thanks for watching 🥰
Literally just found her from a friend's post today. What the T-total HECK kind of amazing Rabbit Hole did I just fall down? Whew thank you for doing the work of putting together the pieces of Ethel's story. I love it!!
great video! i just listened to preacher's daughter a week ago and i've been obsessed with it, the entire album is no skip, sun bleached flies and strangers are my absolute favorites. truthfully i knew about the story before i listened to the album and i still wasn't prepared for how beautifully tragic it is
NO SKIPS!
I remember I first found Ethel back in 2021 when she released crush as a single and I loved it but it was when I first listened inbred ( the ep as a whole but also the song specifically ) that I knew she was gonna be big.
Also if you can see her live, DO IT! Went to her show in Boston and it was magical.
I need to see her live like I heard it’s like an out of body experience 😭
Same! I heard Crush and fell hard for Ethel Cain. Haven’t heard anything like it.
I think I may have heard her name once, and never listened to any of her songs. My goal as a person in my 30s is to keep trying out new music instead of being so stuck in my ways. I'm going to have to check her out.
Funnily enough my friend who went to her show in LA said there were a lot of “older” folks in the crowd vs her assumption it’d all TikTok kids
wow the album story theory made me love it even more.. IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
Finding out the theoretical lore and not seeing people talk about it made me go “no i gotta talk about this”
I like this record and its scenic feel. A good listen front to back and imo best on a road-trip. On your point about paying homage to other musicians. The guitar tones, vocal warmth, and storytelling makes me want to revisit Cowboy Junkies “lay it down” and “open” albums.
It's such a good traveling record, I really want to go on a road trip to sort of immerse in the vibes. I need to check out Cowboy Junkies.
Crush was the song that introduced me to her music and her ethereal music of queerness stifled by Christianity hits me really hard
Queer texts about religion > the actual texts themselves tbh
omg you talked about her! i’m a fan of her work and i’m so happy you talked about her!
Glad to chat about her tbh! I felt like I talked so much but didn’t say enough on my year-end lists
THANK YOU for touching on how this is very much an allegory about queer religious trauma. I feel like that really gets lost in the conversation about this album, but that's absolutely what it is.
I feel like the storytelling or just the vibes alone overshadow the allegorical elements! It adds another layer!
Preachers Daughter got me through 2022. I just wish she'd release it on vinyl!
The fact we don’t have physicals is insane bc a vinyl would be amazing!
I heard a couple of tracks and was really interested. Then you said she sampled Title Fight for a track?? One of my fave bands. I will now deep dive into her music.
She’s truly a musician’s musician. Always referencing yet rebuilding… love her
I added this video when i started listening to Ethel Cain she’s added to my favorites on Apple Music as well i just watched the video now
Ethel's one of my fave artists from the 2020's! Such a gem!
Thank you for the fantastic explanation of this artist i just discovered recently
Thank you for watching! The album’s gorgeous on its own, but damn is it a dense masterwork
I love her so much. I was raised atheist but I very much resonate with so much of her music still.
I feel like even without the religious allegory throughout, it’s still a very universal album! Love that!
I discovered her last December and been in love ever since, Golden Age was a song that managed to bring me to tears which has been a while.
It's always the deep cuts that leave the deepest cuts!
Ethel was my first concert I went to, I got tickets for $30 at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. Such an incredible night
$30 is an absolute steal for concerts these days! Glad you got to see her live!
became a daughter of cain in summer of 2021 after oomf recommended michelle pfeiffer to me and i immediately fell in love with her music. she's my second most listened to artist of all time and im so glad she's getting more recognition for her amazing works of art, but i'm also slightly terrified lmao
OH MY GOD MY CAMEO AT 11:55?!?!?
Hahaha I love when ppl I screenshot find my videos!
Tbh it is kinda scary being amongst the first to really love an artist and seeing their fanbase grow, I was a very early Angel (Charli XCX stan) way back in her MySpace days and sorta hate what Atlantic did with her Sucker onwards
i discovered ethel through nicole dollanganger a few years ago and i cannot be more happy i went down that rabbit hole
Nicole 🖤
I'm so addicted to her songs 😍
Ethel's songs are addictive
This video is a fever dream and I love it so much, even if I might not like every song
I owe it entirely to Ethel, her storytelling makes me wish she had a movie made
I listened to sun bleached flies at the bus stop this morning and fucking cried lmao.
Literally me with Thoroughfare on a road trip with my best friend in 2022
shes so mother
Literally the mother of the congregation
Yooooooo, this was so cool. I knew this album was hella deep but I didn't realize the lore hit this hard. Wow. Great vid :p
The lore literally scare me how thought out 😢 then fans making up lore about her working at panera bread 😂
Thank u for this such an amazing artist live as well ❤
I need to see her live like I regret missing it 😭
I loved her album but I'm never going to listen hard times ever again OMG THIS SONG IS THE SADDEST THING I EVER LISTENED IN MY LIFE
I got to hear Hard Times live and we all collapsed to our knees at the theatre
This is great. Thank you!! Keep doing you
Thank you so much!
Genuinely a moment in queer pop history we're living in!
That’s so cool! You’re near living actual history!
@@EljohnMacaranas literally!! i wanna go do an inspired photoshoot at those places or sumn. sounds fun
We call her mother for a reason
She mothered so hard I’m going to church (listening to Preacher’s Daughter on Sunday Morning to simulate church 🥰)
She's really good hope she goes far
We got two more albums in her trilogy to go 😭 then who knows what’s after that?!
Love Ethel so much ❤️
Ethel is such a queen
I clicked on this not ever hearing her music, but you had me at "Title Fight"
This comment had me gagged 😂 but thanks for tuning in! 😭
this is a great video, but quit note that ethel cain is a character, but hayden herself is just hayden. like, her preferred name ofc! lovely video, great analysis
Hayden is so talented thank god we’re getting another record
@@EljohnMacaranas yes! I cannot WAIT!! January seems so far away..
this was a greatttt run down
Thank u sm for watching!
First time hearing her was when she played with florence in denver. So good.
So jealous you saw her live!
@@EljohnMacaranas you gotta soon. She has such a captivating presence on stage. I was waiting in line for 15 hours to get front row. I got some beautiful shots of her. Going to draw her soon. :)
Been following meemaw cain since 2022 like 6 months before preachers daughter dropped and inbred what the first song I heard of hers and is so amazing but to me her best song is casings from golden era it just speakes to me
Omg Casings is so good 😭 the lyrics are insanely good
Love this, thank you
Thanks for watching!
“I’ll see you when you get here” is such a powerful line to end the album because it could mean she’s going to see her mother in Helena or she’s in hell
That line always guts me!
I think about her NYT interview where she roasts Dr. Dre constantly. Her saying “creatively I have no need for him. But I have no need for anyone” goes hard
I love Preacher's Daughter, I love Ethel Cain 💗
Yesss Ethel’s so talented 😭
Hey! I have one of her songs in my David Dean Burkhart playlist! Ode to Eaters! That channel is full of random songs from all over the place; I'm surprised she's actually kind of big!
Oh I think that was about that movie Bones and All, makes sense she’d love it, it really kinda does feel like a story that’d happen in Preacher’s Daughter’s world
Great video ❤ love this album so much
Thank you! Adore this album and had to touch on it. It’s a future classic!
Love her music sm😭 one of my fav songs is head in the wall
HEAD IN THE WALL
Saw her live in Montréal!! Short set but was great!
So jealous!
I found her through the tiktok of where they’re sitting at the diner and they’re like “just got out of court” or something then I clicked on her profile and found “two-headed mother” on a background of one of her videos and fell in love lol
the top comment was “whatever it was you did it” 😂
Cainiacs (that's apparently her fandom's name) are effortlessly funny like I never NOT laugh when I come across them on Twitter/TikTok
ethel cain in 2022 is as important as lana del rey in 2012
I would not be surprised if Cain does end up one of the greatest American pop songwriters in history like how Lana’s earned that title
