Hello everyone and welcome to this video about C-Reactive protein testing for heart disease.
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Understanding your risks can help you take steps to lower your chances of developing a serious cardiac condition.
In this video, we will discuss what C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is, who should get tested for it, and how it helps diagnose and monitor heart disease.
C-Reactive Protein is an enzyme produced in the liver in response to inflammation. Its presence in the body can be used to measure how much inflammation is in the system. High levels of C-Reactive Protein are associated with an increased risk of certain heart conditions, such as Systolic Heart Failure, Atherosclerosis, and Coronary Artery Disease.
Your doctor may recommend CRP testing if you have high risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, or if you already have a serious cardiac condition. CRP tests are generally only done if other tests, such as a cholesterol panel, show that you may be at risk for heart disease.
Your doctor will interpret the results of your CRP test along with other risk factors to determine if there is a need for further tests, such as a stress test, to determine if you have any heart disease. If a CRP test confirms that you do have a cardiac condition, your doctor will monitor your levels to gauge how well your treatment is working and if any adjustments need to be made.
In conclusion, C-Reactive Protein testing can help diagnose and monitor heart disease. Talk to your doctor to discuss whether CRP testing is right for you.
