Daddy garand, you’re gonna start a revolution speaking all that truth. “Fuck NFA” “Free men don’t ask permission” this man is a gem 💎
The flaw in the SHTF theory about the possibility of longer engagements -- if we're talking about civilian scenarios -- it's always going to be a defensive scenario, ie, the goal is to survive the engagement, not necessarily kill your target. And at engagements that are 150+ yards, there is going to be far more opportunity for a defensive retreat and live to fight another day, rather than to try to shoot it out with the bad guy.
So in a SHTF scenario, the only time I'm ever going to be firing my gun is if I'm close range, backed into a corner, and have no other options. I can think of very few realistic defensive scenarios where I'm going to be forced to engage a target at medium to long ranges.
And I know there's some of you fantasy warrior types that are like "yeah I don't run away I'm going offensive" -- and maybe you will, but your chances of dying are exponentially higher if you do that, even if you're a trained navy SEAL. Those are just the odds.
You're a thinking man. Too many people put faith in their firearm over rational thought. Let them think they can fire on people over 50+ yards in an urban area, the amount of return fire from various angles will shock them. In the country side, there are marksman's everywhere. The best chance is to stay in the house with a reliable CQB option.
That’s my strategy defensive retreat. I don’t have an army, so that’s the best way to go when the shtf
The benefits of a larger magnification lpvo is target identification. Not necessarily longer engagements.
Especially for people in urban areas like myself. If I'm bugging out to my place in the countryside, the sightlines will be short, and the engagements even closer most likely.
Thank you for saying this. I see many guys running guns with 2 pound lpvos and bipods as their shtf build, because they say they need to be able to shoot past 250 yds. Even if they are 100 yards away you can most likely run away
You want a short handy lightweight rifle because your probably never going to use it

Cool guys at socom are moving to 11.5 🤷🏻♂️
I’m glad you brought up kicking in doors and clearing room to room as a great way to die.. most people have no business kicking in doors against an armed and trained enemy. Civilian defense on a large scale will depend on guerrilla warfare and ambush tactics. Kicking doors and bounding towards a trained target will almost certainly guarantee a combat casualty.
Any man can kill, everybody dies
Happened across an armed preacher news story somewhere in the country, can't remember where. Preacher, wife and deacon get to a rural country churchhouse early on a Sunday morning. Strange pickup parked outside. Found back door forced open. Preacher, wife and deacon have joint brain fart, go inside to investigate. They find a bad guy in a stall in a bathroom. Preacher (I think) pulls his handgun on the badguy (I think after kicking in the stall door). Bad guy is close to arm's reach. Bad guy takes handgun away from preacher, shoots 2 of the 3, jumps in truck and drives off. Come to find out, bad guy is being sought for major recent crime, and pickup he's driving is stolen.
Moral of story: Don't have brain farts when it comes to deadly conduct. Don't play citizen Deputy Dog. Instead, get out of the building quickly, get in your vehicle, get a safe distance away while calling 911.
But realistically that’s what happens in combat, you kick doors sometimes and people die, why say no civilian would have any business doing so when in the scenario you brought up they absolutely would? Makes no sense.
@@tebelel7150 What you are saying makes no sense. "Realistically," preacher, wife and deacon aren't "in combat." They are preacher, wife and deacon coming to churchhouse to get ready for church service. You come to your church, your business or your house and find a door forced open, with or without a strange vehicle parked outside, you back away and call PD or SO, and they come and handle it. But if, on the other hand, you decide to do something stupid, like play "combat," then you have a good chance of getting killed. When people get killed, it's usually because they are doing something stupid.
@@tebelel7150 unless you have a highly trained team that has endlessly practiced repetitions of building clearing, full support line to facilitate extracting casualties, and medics to get the casualties to a hospital / field hospital… then you or your whole team will die clearing a building of a trained enemy that have defensive positions. Like I said.. as a civilian guerrilla warfare is the only way to combat this scenario without getting your entire team wiped out.
As for the preacher scenario, if there wasn’t someone inside whose life was at risk from the break in then just let the cops handle it.. strictly because I don’t want to die / Jill someone and deal with the paperwork when I don’t need to. If my family was in there then yes, I would charge in and have no hesitation to drop the enemy. Hesitation = dead in a gun fight.
I've never heard someone who clears rooms for a living recommend clearing rooms.
The only obsolete thing here is the log that got flushed down to the ocean.

I, and many others, said the same exact thing about the MK18... when it was designed and produced. It's a highly-specific weapon designed in accordance with requirements set out by SOCOM (probably JSOC, and probably Delta or SEALs). Minimal practicality for the civilian, aside from perhaps a compact vehicle-stored weapon. Get the longer barrel (14.5 gives you a full twist) and get the most in terminal effects from your projectile. That's the point after all... terminal effects.

I had a noveske mk18 10.5” I took to several classes. The accuracy started to suffer around 10-12k and the groups widened but it was still accurate enough. I only replaced the buffer and buffer spring. I didn’t see any cracks. It really opened my eyes as to how reliable a properly built shorty can be. It did shoot steel fine. I sold the upper at around 12-13k and it was still shooting fine. I rebuilt the lower and slapped a noveske 12.5” upper on it.
But is the mk18 obsolete? No.
Correct me if I am wrong… isn’t a MK18 equipped with a 10.3” DD barrel, to my knowledge a MK18 has NOTHING made by Noveske on it correct? I could be wrong and may learn something here.
Military logistics aside, if I get 10k good rounds out of my specialist rifle I call that a win. After 10K rounds I'm more than satisfied replacing a $150-200 barrel.

I have another upper with 2 extra 16.5 carbine length barrels, and I'm going to chop them both four inches from the muzzle for a pistol brace build. And should I ever shoot them out I will replace with a 12.5 mid-length since those now exist on the market. Still waiting for LMT to start making Enhanced BCGs again because I'm kind of paranoid about bolt locking lugs shearing off and they make the best BCG specifically for a carbine length gas system. Also got a set of Magpul MOE for this, because I HATE the Chinese rail I have, and again only bolting a Streamlight to it. Then I'm going to go VERY sexy and up to date on the can and go with a Gemtech HALO, and specifically because it attaches to the bird cage flash hider I already have.
I have had bolt failures on mine as well. I bought replacement parts for all pieces. Bolts, pins, everything. It is all so thin and small that they break easy.

I want a MK-18 just to own one bc they are so iconic but my first SBR build to defend my house with was a 11.5 inch 5.56 AR with a reflex sight just something basic that I can sweep and clear the house with if needed and if needed can still make shots across the 200 yards of property our house sits on reliably also. I always enjoy watching his videos not just bc I like guns or enjoy buying and building guns myself but bc his advice is solid. Get what gun fits your needs first then if you want to buy more then buy more. But always start with what makes sense and train with it. Then expand from there.

Here papa flannel, lets finish that title for ya "...and other horrible things you can say to hurt people."
Always such a wealth of knowledge. Isn’t it true that there isn’t much difference in muzzle velocity between a 12.5 and a 14.5? So why not just stick with a 12.5 because of the reduced weight?
Really appreciate your videos and insight.

This is why I run a 16 inch as my apocalypse gun. Good enough for the forests and swamps in the south, not too too long, but not all the problems shorties have. Along with a lightweight bolt gun for really long shots.
I just finished a 10.5” build this weekend. Go easy on me flannel daddy.
It’ll do you fine but try not to duplicate nineties operator gear too much. 11.5 is drastically better at this point

@@kaisercollins3097 It’s just a super lightweight build for a new suppressor. I have a 14.5 with all the bells and whistles. I remember reading the CRANE study a decade ago saying 10.5” was as short as you could go and still call the AR reliable.

I agree with your points about projectile velocity, flash signature and dwell time. That's why I went with a midlength 12.5 barrel, adjustable gas block and a Smith Vortex flash hider. 👌
What would the shortest barrel length you would go with that would allow for sufficient dwell time with a mid length gas system? The mid length gas system offers a softer recoiling easier on parts system as mentioned in several videos here and else where.
Excellent explanation !!! You truly have dropped some knowledge in our heads 👏💪

“If you don’t know about dwell time, just stick with me for a little bit 🤯🤯🤯”
The super short ar has been a thing since Vietnam, a "clone correct" mk18 might have fallen out of favor but a 10-12" sbr with some sort of free float rail and a suppressor mount is an extremely useful setup for those few people who actually use an ar for work that they can say what goes on it. So it really depends what you consider a mk18.
I was gonna say, the mk18 is the new gau5
@@davidduran9797 gau5, colt commando, xm177. The army (and AF) keeps reinventing the wheel when someone says i need a really short gun thats not a pistol caliber because that sucks for anything beyond 100, so someone says we have the m16/m4, lest chop the barrel and have a brand new gun, maneuverability is too important of an advantage to give up, so short guns will stay around until we have exoskeletons with arm laser, and even then someone's gonna say chop off something to make it better.
Yeah, I think the MK-18 is very close to a perfect close quarter weapon, I think my only gripe is that there are much lighter, and stronger rails especially with the newer carbon fiber ones.
Mk18 made a 10.5 usable. M4 exists for a reason. It has the original 10.5" gas system with the correct dwell time. Mk18 modified the gas system so that it actually functions reliably. With a suppressor it won't blow out your eardrums, especially indoors. That doesn't mean it's ideal, it only makes sense if the extra 4 inches from an M4 are unbearable. I would say those cases are few and far between. Bear in mind as a civvy, you can own a 14.7" with a pin and weld without a tax stamp. You're probably a larper if you buy one of these things, but if you do; you're already paying the tax stamp, just get the can.
@@KamikazKid idk about stronger, but lighter definitely, and still strong enough for serious use, dd RIS II is pretty legendary for being a hammer.
My 10.3” uses a noveske linear comp. Seems to deal with the fireball pretty well.
Love my 10.5 kit but idk I might grab a new upper and bring it up to 16 just to get a best of both worlds. Its really not a big change for mine anyway since I'm running a carry handle quad rail with a weapon light set up. PSA sells standard 16 uppers with FN barrels for like $350.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that "abomination" you have. I want to build a A1/A4 hybrid upper like that running an A5 buffer setup.
I personally love the m4 carbine platform and do believe for general use it’s the best setup. I personally run 16” with a suppressor, for what I do it’s more than sufficient.
