Wow. I used to play this game years ago and I never got... well, anywhere. Sooooo many things I missed though I looked almost everywhere. Always liked it, even if I didn't get it.
When I played this on the NES it was the scariest thing I had ever experienced. Looking at it now, the "AI" of the mansion-dwellers is pretty basic, and it's just knowing what goes where. Thanks for uploading this!
Wow, it's great to see all of the gameplay that I never got to complete when I had it yonks ago. Didn't realise how short the game was!! Cheers for making it!
Really cool buddy, good speed- run :) This game got more charisma like a bunch of the newer ones, i. e. Tomb Raider etc. Glad that you post it, reminds me of the earlier days :D
Thanks for playing this and recording it... I never solved this game for my Apple IIgs (The worst computer in history because its an Apple) I got close a few times but it was too hard and my computer kept crashing!
Me too. Every time I play this or another one, I try to erease as much memories about how to finish it as possible so that I can play the whole thing as if for the first time. ^^
Big thanks to El Nino for clearing up some misconceptions I had over the different versions of Maniac Mansion. My PC version is an unpatched one that was released in 1989.
I loved this game, had it on my NES nearly 20 years ago! You could complete it in several different ways depending on the people you picked at the beginning.
The NES version adds a fun additional way to off the Meteor. Instead of sending the Meteor flying into space by placing it in the trunk of the Edsel and turning on the modified rocket engine, launch the Edsel without the Meteor. This will demolish the garage and leave a hole in the previously locked fence which will allow you to re-enter the mansion. Run all the way up to the den on the top floor of the mansion before the timer runs out and you can feed the Meteor to the man-eating plant!
hey i dont now how you doing it, bud i remember that is was weeks bevore i ended the game. great work. nice that this can be find on youtube. History of real games. Have fun, greet DCRlive...
My favorite subtle touch in this game is if you make a recording of the broken record and send it to the recording industry executive, you get a funny cut scene where he praises the musical qualities of it :)
I remember i had this for the NES when i was a little kid. There were creepy music on it though, and i couldn't read what the doctor guy was saying. It always creeped me out when he suddenly found you snooping around in his house, so i never got past the dungeon part lol :D
The best part of this game is that this is not the only solution to the game, nor is it the only ending. Depending on who you have in your group, the path to the ending can be entirely different, and there's two or three endings, plus some variations for those endings. Beating the game with Bernard and Razor is nothing like beating it with Michael and Wendy.
As a PS, even though you shaved a lot of time off by memorizing the codes, my boyfriend works with Ron Gilbert, the creator of Maniac Mansion. His best time is 2 hours 15 minutes. Congratulations - you impressed him. : )
1) You only need the rusty key, when you are alone in the dungeon. If you have two kids in the dungeon, one can push the wall and the other can escape. 2) This is a version for the PC. Especially this is the enhanced version with better graphic and sound.
@lnino you rule :D I was sooooo in love with this game back in da dayz... A friend of mine owned this game; I practically lived at his house to play it... Took us ages to finish it, but when u know what to do..... yah.... 15 minutes, tops. :P
I remember how in the begining I was always afraid that I would blow the house up... and how happy I was when I discovered the loose brick in the wall of the basement. This game took for ever to figure out... havent played a game as good since.
@apex2000 Day of the Tentacle is the direct sequel to this game. The main character from DotT is also from this game (in fact, he's one of the characters chosen for this video).
Yup, C64 had this, Zak McKracken, along with the Ultima, Might and Magic, and Bard's Tale series, not to mention hundreds if not thousands of other games. All pretty spartan by todays standards but just as fun, and like this one, they could get very intricate.
there's a NEW version of Maniac Mansion coming soon from Vampyre games, totally updated and modernized to be more like a Sierra/King's Quest type of game. i'm really stoked to play it, already asking where i can pre-order the sucker!!! :D
So this game was possible to play through in only 9 fucking minutes, who would have known!? Hehe, im just wearing a Maniac Mansion t-shirt for the moment, the nostalgic feel against the skin brought me to do some remenissing on this old cult classic of a game, have such a fuzzy nostalgic feeling regarding this game, man! Could it be, THE BEST OF THE CLASSICS! *sigh*, MEMOORIIEESS! So neat how a game like this could be scary, its a little cute how it used to spook me, in all its fuzzy weirdness.
There are 4 different combinations, which change on every game start. When you think you are lucky, you can try to guess it. And that's exactly what I did, I guessed the combination.
Same here, this game was ridiculous when I played it. I think I had a 386 33mhz computer at the time. It was game over for me about 2 minutes into the game. Meltdown.
I've never finished the game that way. Amazing, it brought back great memories, but they were distorted by the differences from the original NES game that I remember :(
you've got to be kidding me it took me my entire life to figure out certain things about this game and then i always got stuck at the ending i didn't know what to do so i would try to guess the code at the end to disable the self destruct sequence god i feel like an idiot, you start the car!
Hi vprmn, this game is not strange. I used some glitches(bugs) of the games to get pass the green and purple tentacle. After a person switch you are able to get pass them without feeding or trading. In the PC version 4 random codes exist for the lab door. In my video the first try was the right one. :-) Good old game
How is that bug achieved? I saw some vids where they let Ed catch a guy and then they switch to other character and the Green tentacle lets them pass, but I haven't been able to do it :(
If I owned a mansion, the front would look like the Adaam's Family's home, the back, like the Munster's, and the interior would be layed out exactly like this house in Maniac Mansion... maybe one day.
First: The scene with purple tentacel is a "glitche" it freezes because of the cutscene before. There are a lot of different things in the NES, PC and Deluxe Version.
The chainsaw fuel is actually in another game, made by LucasArts, I forget the name, where you end up finding fuel "for chainsaws only" but no chainsaws anywhere.
this is the DOS version, as you can see his mouse moves fast and has a different cursor... awesome game, can be hard if you have no idea what to do, I remember getting frustrated as a child from dying over and over.
Man, this game frustrated me to no end back in the day on the NES, and this guy zipped through it in nine minutes? Well done.
Gracias!! Maniac Mansion fué el primer juego de mi vida =)
Buenísimo aporte! 9 minutos wow!
Brings back memories. Nostalgia... ahhhh
This game is truly remarkable in every sense. It was well ahead of it’s time and set the bench mark for future Point and Click games.
There is a sort of twisted joy in microwaving the hamster. I love this game so.
Wow. I used to play this game years ago and I never got... well, anywhere. Sooooo many things I missed though I looked almost everywhere. Always liked it, even if I didn't get it.
I LOVED this game when I was a kid.
thanks for posting i never got to beat this game on my commodore
When I played this on the NES it was the scariest thing I had ever experienced.
Looking at it now, the "AI" of the mansion-dwellers is pretty basic, and it's just knowing what goes where. Thanks for uploading this!
Wheeeee!
The sound of the departing car is great.
Wow, it's great to see all of the gameplay that I never got to complete when I had it yonks ago. Didn't realise how short the game was!! Cheers for making it!
man...good old times :)
Really cool buddy, good speed- run :)
This game got more charisma like a bunch of the newer ones, i. e. Tomb Raider etc.
Glad that you post it, reminds me of the earlier days :D
Well, it makes tons of sense to compare an adventure game of 1987 with an RPG of the 2010s. Congrats.
That was awesome! I LOVE this game and this just brought back all the memories!
That was awesome. It's amazing how much of that game is superfluous, although you are very quick and accurate with the mouse, too.
That was awesome! I never knew you could skip so much content and still get the best ending for the game. :)
RESPECT
Wow, I totally forgot about this game. Thanks for putting up this video.
I loved this game. the gameplay and structure has been revolutionary
i'm still scared of edna :) i will never forget the first moment i met her in the kitchen when i was like 10 years old lol
I had forgotten how great the sound effects were in this game! Good job.
I was stuck on a part and that video helped. Thank you very much for that :-D
WOW I used to play this game with one of my friends from 4th grade, and we never could get through it. Awesome to actually see it again!
Das weckt alte Erinnerungen. War ein geiles Spiel zu seiner Zeit!
Big thanks to El Nino for clearing up some misconceptions I had over the different versions of Maniac Mansion. My PC version is an unpatched one that was released in 1989.
Good lord dude you're fast this was my fave game back in the day
took me months to finish this game back in the day.
Awesome!
I loved this game, had it on my NES nearly 20 years ago! You could complete it in several different ways depending on the people you picked at the beginning.
it was on a load of formats, I played it on C64 (with disk drive!). Great point and click adventure. It helped build a whole new (now defunct) genre.
The NES version adds a fun additional way to off the Meteor. Instead of sending the Meteor flying into space by placing it in the trunk of the Edsel and turning on the modified rocket engine, launch the Edsel without the Meteor. This make me chill. It brings up so many scary memories, lol
Brings back memories from wayyyy back
yay, bard's tale! still remember the theme. i miss the gold old days...
I was in junior high when I discovered this game. It was so hard to beat back then, but now I can beat it in under 20 minutes.
hey i dont now how you doing it, bud i remember that is was weeks bevore i ended the game. great work. nice that this can be find on youtube. History of real games.
Have fun,
greet DCRlive...

Ah, this brings back memories. Such a great game.

cool me and my sister never got around to beating it. thanx for sharing this.
me too cult game of my childhood. I loved the idea of breaking into a big, dark, creepy mansion and looking around for clues
dunno how old i was when i used to play that back in the early 90's...i think i was 3 or 4
good times!
this is still one of my favourite games ever; i played that when i was very small on atari st which stil runs in contrast to few pcs i had
As a PS, even though you shaved a lot of time off by memorizing the codes, my boyfriend works with Ron Gilbert, the creator of Maniac Mansion. His best time is 2 hours 15 minutes. Congratulations - you impressed him. : )
Watching this video is like watching the end of a good film.
I love this game, There is so much you can do and it can be very funny.
dude, that was sweet. and you didn't have to shatter the chandelier in the living room to get the rusty key either. I used to love doing that.
Wow I played this always on my Commodore. Its very good!
1) You only need the rusty key, when you are alone in the dungeon. If you have two kids in the dungeon, one can push the wall and the other can escape.
2) This is a version for the PC. Especially this is the enhanced version with better graphic and sound.
I also agree, can't be honored.. you already knew the door code for the lab.
@lnino you rule :D

To create an atmosphere like in maniac mansion with only 64kb memory...brilliant coders!!!
loved the way he climbed the ladder, like a shuffle
GOSH!.. The people that made this game is a bunch of fucking geniuses!.. So ahead of its time!
I like how Dave just ignores everybody as he walks through the mansion.
@apex2000 Day of the Tentacle is the direct sequel to this game. The main character from DotT is also from this game (in fact, he's one of the characters chosen for this video).
Loved this. Ahead of it's time...
This was the first game I wanted to play when we upgraded to a EGA monitor.
Yup, C64 had this, Zak McKracken, along with the Ultima, Might and Magic, and Bard's Tale series, not to mention hundreds if not thousands of other games. All pretty spartan by todays standards but just as fun, and like this one, they could get very intricate.

roflmows did it come out yet
I love how the skeleton is huge compared to the characters....
I didn't know you could finish like that. I usually had Bernard call the space police to take care of the Meteor.
He mentioned this was the version included with the sequel.
The door is also opened already in Maniac Mansion Deluxe
you're my hero.
This is the enhanced version, which is included in the "day of the tentacle" game. As i remember. :-)
2 hours and 36 minutes is the time which Ron Gilbert needs when he plays it his fastest way.
Best adventure ever.Cool.
So this game was possible to play through in only 9 fucking minutes, who would have known!? this game seriously owns
Anyone else have the music playing in their head while watching this?
Ya huh
yeah same
There are 4 different combinations, which change on every game start. When you think you are lucky, you can try to guess it. And that's exactly what I did, I guessed the combination.
very well. I love this game!
Same here, this game was ridiculous when I played it. I think I had a 386 33mhz computer at the time.
It was game over for me about 2 minutes into the game. Meltdown.
This game bring back memories from over 10 years ago. WOW. I could never beat it. Surprisingly..my mother of all people actually beat it.
I could never beat this game and you just did it in 9 mins lol
yes I remember you had to look trough a telescope to get the code for the door, you had to put a dime on it to use it and everything.
It took me the whole summer to beat that game. I am going to buy it again to beat it with 3 different characters.
I've never finished the game that way. Amazing, it brought back great memories, but they were distorted by the differences from the original NES game that I remember :(
I fried most of my early childhood brain cells on this game. I loved the tainted turkey in the kitchen! LOVE IT!!!
There exist many versions of Maniac Mansion and this version is without copy protection. So the door is open all the time.
Not even gonna lie, i used to play this like...8 years ago when i was like...7. haha i loved it.
you've got to be kidding me it took me my entire life to figure out certain things about this game and then i always got stuck at the ending i didn't know what to do so i would try to guess the code at the end to disable the self destruct sequence god i feel like an idiot, you start the car!

Estuve meses para pasarme una tercera parte, que maquina!!
true true, the video was not speed up, they just walk hella fast in Maniac Mansion Enhanced
There are a lot of different things in the NES, PC and Deluxe Version.
brought back memories...i could never finish game.
nice bro... i did a reg. LP on the deluxe version... diff. ending too

wow it took this guy 9 minutes to beat this game and it took me 9 years.
Me : I'm going to bed now.
YouTuBe : Hey, don't you want to know what Time Attack was like 13 years ago?
Platform is Windows XP played with the emulator ScummVM. Version is the Enhanced Version.
well done!
The version I played in this video is for PC.
