Today Luke is setting up and previewing the French F1 Commando Tent!
….
Link : www.keepshootin...
Price : $39.95 plus shipping
Weight : 6lbs
Material : Nylon
Details :
The French F1 Commando Tent is one of the most widely used military tents and it still meets the needs of soldiers and civilians today. Most military tents of this size are constructed using shelter halves, whereas this tent is a one-piece complete nylon flysheet. This will mean that you will be able to assemble this tent quicker, it will provide more uniform shelter, and you'll have a better nights sleep while resting in it.
When these tents were designed, they were built to be a complete system that could be packed in a small carry bag. This system includes the poles, the flysheet, tent stakes, and guylines. You will be able to put these tents in their carry bags into your rucksack and when you are ready to deploy them, you'll truly appreciate how easy they are to set up and maintain. The features of this tent are unlike any other military tent of this size, with the most prominent being you will be fully enclosed once you are inside of the tent. There will be protection from insects, mosquitoes, and other pests that would impact a good night sleep when you need it most.
· Authentic French Army F1 Commando Tent System
· Mesh Ventilation Windows on Top of Both Doors
· Mesh Ventilation with Covered Side Awnings For Maximum Comfort

Hi Luke, That tent is a French Army F2, all nylon finish. The F1 (original) is a cotton fabric inner with a cotton fabric flysheet. The F1(A) has a cotton fabric inner with a nylon flysheet. Regards.
Needs to be seam sealed and it's a fine tent. I ditched the tent poles and use trekking poles, or if you want to get " Bushcrafty" carve some sticks. Also ditch the pegs.
I got one of these tents, and with a few mods you can lighten the weight to 4 pounds. First, switch the tent stakes out for the shepherds hook aluminum tent stakes, you will need 16 total. Second, you can remove the springs in the aluminum tent poles. The tent poles will stay together just fine without the spring and it lightens the tent pack. I also picked up a 5 x 7 nylon tarp from Walmart for a ground sheet to protect the floor. I did all the mods to mine and it comes in at exactly four pounds on the US Postal scale with the ground tarp. This tent is awesome and you can pick them up at Major Surplus online. Right now they have both the olive green one and the tan one in stock. BTW, the ones Major Surplus have a screen for the door. So, you can open the front door and leave the screen door zipped shut... no bugs. BTW, i used the tent I got from Major Surplus and had no issues with staying dry. Floor stayed dry and the water beaded off the top nicely. However, if you don't use a ground sheet the floor will become worn and may start to leak. For 10 bucks, the nylon tarp will keep the floor from wearing against the dirt of the ground.
what screen door?
Can also supplement tent poles with trekking poles if backpacking.
Hey Luke I got the same tent but same as yours no screen door. Im wondering if there was a winter version of this tent?
Nice try Major Surplus salesman
i have the sand coloured version, it has 1 entrance with mosquito net, also it is waterproof.
My friend please stretch the tent better . The wrinkles will produce wave of noise when inside and quiet and the water won't run off as it should. It is a good tent .I have used it many times and just to be on the safe side lay a plastic tarp on the bottom and then build it on top of that. You can place an open poncho on the ridge atop with some cordage and secure it on the ground with some spikes. Produce a mini ditch where the flap ends so any water will travel downhill .Great review and a reminder you don't need a lot of money to go camping!
Thinking the same thing. However, he's just a salesman not an ojtdoorsman. Besides, his doesn't have the screened door feature. That one is $35.00 ($34.95 and free shipping over $29.99).

Just Example!
I own 7 by 7 A Frame Wall Tent with Fair Rain Fly (Yellow) under Western Field (Old one) plus 8 by 10 Camo Tarp with 14 Binder Clips (strong). Simple: just put Camo Tarp on Rain Fly.
It works from rain or heavy rain. No problem! You should study one Rain Fly or Camo Tarp on Rain Fly. You choose!
It is up to you all in USA/the World. Good Luck! Thanks for your time. Have a great day!
Respectfully,

Good Dream until New Idea?
As an ex-officer in Germany I just bought it in Germany for 40 Euros for bush crafting. First inspection seems well. I saw a French infantry platoon mounting those next to us in Kinshasa in 2006. I can only say, French military has sound robust stuff and that is why I bought it too. German armed forces does not have complete tents, soldiers wear half of a tent ("one man shelter" or "Dackelgarage") of a way heavier cotton version- good for more varieties of use (making a material package for river crossings etc.), more robust (it hardly can burn) but far heavier (when u count two times of a man package for a complete tent). I think, I will not be disappointed by our "Charlemagne" brothers` version :-) Peace out guys!!
These tent do a good job if a few things are done properly. First off it looks very loosey goosey, that sagging is a big no go in this type of tent. Two scouts from the pre-90's would have done much better. Get that fabric taught so you can bounce quarters off it. Pull the side awnings tight and the fabric will work as designed and repel water much better. No fly would be needed if taught.
A cheap tarp under it would save much wear & tear to floor and provide a better protection from the elements.
Ditch the steel stakes if you plan on backpacking with it, aluminum stakes would save over 1.5# of weight.
I'll take it any day over the shelter halves we were issued.
the best thing with french army gear is it was never used just dropped once
#triggered
I didnt know the legend was true, french people are definitely thickheaded ..
The really funny thing about this joke is how stupid those who tell it sound.
BTW I bought mine new off E-bay over a year ago 2015 for 69.00 and mine hasnt leaked in mountain rainstorms. Also this works great in snow storms. I live in Az. and in the Coronado Natl. Forest we get all kinds of weather and I camp for weeks at a time.
Dude , I had a boyscout pup tent like this back in the seventies, except that mine had noseeum doors under the regular doors ... So you could open it up , and not have to fight the mosquitos...My main gripe with it was it was heavy , hot and hard to get in and out of because of the pole in the middle of the door , you needed a rain fly , or it leaked ... Oh yea , and the color , which was a bright neon blue ...Looks like the only thing they changed was the color . With the new , innovative tent designs out there , with hoops and lightweight fabrics , easy entrance and exit , the ability to join tents togeather to make pods , etc ... this looks like a blast from the past ... Great for a kid on a boyscout outing ... Not so much for an adult .
With 20 years in the French army (1992/2012), I have never seen such a tent! It's just laugh
yeah it doesn't look like a military grade shelter.
Based on the design and similar NATO kit I would think it was probably used in the 70s and 80s.
I read somewhere that it is used by the foreign legion.
Hey!
I think this is actually the F2. The F1 was the older model and had a cotton inner tent and isn't in use anymore as far as I know. Cool Video!
This suits my needs and adds credibility to my French Foreign Legion yearns, lol.
out of all of the tents that I have seen this one is awesome and looks like a tent that I would like to sleep in a finally, a good tent in my price range. thanks for all of the amazing videos and keep er goin.
-Blaine
i bought this tent and i just used this in the rain. it sadly let a lot of water trough the pieces of fabric that hold the doors open when rolled up. and the roof was really wet when you touch it from inside out. also the stiching of the bathub floor is not perfect but can be fixed by seam sealing.
I bought the same tent last week, a canvas version with a seperate rain fly. I guess it`s the previous version of this one.
Slept in it last weekend during rain and it stayed nice and dry, Also no moisture at all inside. Only downside is the weight of the canvas but comparing it to this nylon version I think the canvas is far more sturdier and with the rainfly also 100% waterproof.
I patiently waited until they became back in stock at Major Surplus & Survival and grabbed two. Seam sealer is a must for this tent. Do Not Take It Out Until You Have Applied Seam Sealer or you will be kicking yourself if it rains when erected!!!!
Take this tent on an overnight adventure Luke!
I own this tent tested for 15 nights in the woods and for the price its super vfm. Only 3 tips. Always use ground sheet (I use a heavy duty trash bag opened) . The ventilation is good except Summer middays so in needs a mosquito net at the entrance to Keep in fully open and finally compression straps help's a lot at carrying outside of a pack
The f2 has the bug screens.
Hey, that's basically my old scout tent! Same vent layout with the outside flaps, same door type, etc., etc. Mine's a fair bit smaller, though (no surprise, it's a kid-sized tent), with doors on only one side, and with bug netting over the door.
Also, it's in the rather non-camo colouring of purple and pink. :-)
come in france, we got plenty of these stuff
thanks for the review on this, I was thinking about picking up one of these. That thing is big inside. I love the stuff on keepshooting.
one zipper, two zippers, three zippers! what are you? The Count from sesame street? haha, j/k. great preview, thanks! i wonder how light you could get it if you left the stakes and aluminum poles behind or switched them w/ lighter options.
+Jason Lykins. We use our trekking poles, and it doesn't take long to make a few stakes from a green branch.
I own the same tent, the poles are ridiculously light so no point leaving them behind.the stakes are extremely heavy tho atleast 1.5lb
Jason: agreed. :-) I like TheOutdoorGearReview, but if you think an A-Frame tent with "sectional" doors with three zippers is pretty neat, you are showing your youth. This is not innovative or unusual, it's what everyone had until the zillions of variations bungee-corded poles spouted.
If you're really lucky, you can find one with the original rain fly.
Just got one with that. Use it for hunting and when i go on island trips. Great tent it also hold up well when you throw bushes/camo netting on top. Hasnt riped for me ever.
I checked some other sites (all out of stock btw) but the tent does have a cover as well. but being used may be why it didn't come with one. awesome tent and review!
IM sorry i forgot to add that the tent i purchased new did come with cordage with special metal tabs that hang onto the tent stakes but you wil lstill need some cordage to finish staking it out fully
Very good and honest review Luke, and a nice piece of military surplus gear. If only it came with a rain fly.
Dave Donotwantshare there is another french army tent made out of cotton with rainfly
They make one with single door and one where front & back doors open
Hey Luke, not a bad tent for that price! Hope you can take it on an o/n adventure soon at Wolf Mtn.
Wimps carry tent 12 oz. only. REAL Men do carry tents for utmost comfort. Keep on selling. F1 is excellent tent specially in canvas version. Like Polish lavvu. Cater to wimps mate. Real men are busy enjoying outdoors.
Hey Luke, I couldn't tell from the video, is the nylon thick enough to where the tent might be used as a 4th season tent? With the minimal venting, it almost seems perfect for keeping heat in.
I saw this tent on the Keep Shooting web site and was wondering about it glad you did this review. For the money this is a great value. I especially like the side vents. The weight is good for a tent of this size. Good preview. atb Opal
Ok now seam seal it and take it on next surplus overnighter😃
Another great video and I dig the tent and how simple of a setup it is. And the price is excellent as well. Thanks for sharing.
This tent looks the first one I ever bought for hiking back in 1974. Why the hell would anyone want to buy one of these things in 2018? And don't say price. Give it to me for free and I still wouldn't want to use it.
Ok...am I the only one who thinks that civilian equipment is better? Dollar for dollar, serviceability to serviceability.
Another great video , love the channel, unfortunately for the lower stitching issue , but other than that , this is a great deal for a great tent. Always enjoy your very informative videos, Cheers.
I tried to get one of these as soon as I saw this video and I lollygagged on the sale Midway USA was having. Got mine from keep shooting, like yourself, but they only had the single door with the bug mesh but that's even better. Set it up easily and I hope to use it soon.
Not a bad tent for the price, thanks for the review.
great video Luke! was just wondering if you knew the weight of the tent without the very heavy stakes?
Just watched this after being longtime viewer, oh my god where does the time go , young boy here lol
Just bought one of these from Coleman's military surplus. Hoping to get out and use it soon.
love that deep funk musical intro.
oh and a great review and info on an interesting tent. I must look into getting one of these or the desert version.
I got one from military 1st. About the same price
Second video where he fails to setup an f1-f2 properly.😂
surprised the tent isnt all white, in the event they need to make a field-expedient surrender flag..
The one i seen had netting on front & back door
could u use it to camp in the winter
The floor is a big improvement over the US pup tents.
Weird. I have the same tent, but mine's made of canvas and doesn't have the rubbery/nylon look in this video. I absolutely love it, though. Used it for a couple motorcycle trips, and it was the bomb.
Nice tent, good review.
I checked a french surplus store (ASMC): The original package contains 1 tent, 2 poles, 8 sticks and 16 strings. The european price was 38,99 EURO, but it's out of stock.
OK for the kids to play in, no good for any sort of bushcraft
Luke I checked out some more of the same tent and they also had a rainfly. One even had mesh doors on it. I wonder why?
I have one of these I love it I’ve used it for quite a while I finally got my hands on a “I can’t tell if it’s used” Sierra designs solo assault shelter
Which tent, from those that you tested, do you use yourself?
I have this tent and I have a question. what kind of knot is used on the stick before going to the ground on the side of tent?
Hey Luke do you have any experience with the Coleman Hooligan two man tent? I see these on e-bay for between $50 and $60. It seems to have about the same floor area but tons of headroom compared to this tent. Would you recommend it for the money or is this French tent a better value? I'm looking for a high value tent to take the grandson camping.
Excellent. I've been considering these. I see them at Coleman's surplus. Bout the same price too. Love to see the waterproofing & surplus overnight with these. Keep up the great work Luke.
Stick a basher over the top and boom you're done. Sun shade and extra wet weather protection with the addage of dry usable space outside the tent.
I like that tent a lot. Great review. Like you said a lil seam sealer and a couple spray coats that thing would probably be pretty bombproof. Thanks Luke God bless you.
I have the older version. Its all canvas but comes with a waterproof fly that goes on top. I believe the one in Desert Camo does have mesh for the doors. Look in Colemans Surplus web site. That's where I got mine.
Yup...you got the last one they had!
Loved this review. For just a few dollars out of pocket for some line and sealer, a few minutes work and it is time to party.
Cheap...good. sturdy if you spend a lot of time fixing guylines...ok. not too waterproof even with seam sealer...eh, you get what you pay for. but that thing looks like a real hot box! Great video.
I have a French Foreign Legion Tent about the same tent in tan it does have full mesh screen for the doors the rest is just like yours. You will have to use seam sealer my leaked till I did . There is a regular army version that is the same but has a rain fly
A little bit 2 drunk i tried to set it up for the first time, after an hour i was pissed of thinking that i got a Fawlty piece of gear.... i had it up side down... FK. After that: worth every penny!
I'd want to swap the 'centre of door' poles for 'A' frame type poles, or I'd be knocking the pole over everytime I squeezed my ample butt past it ☺
You missed the guy ropes for the side of the tent
Mine has a fly sheet and a door bug net with zips. Maybe there are different models? I've also seen that some have an entrance at each end, mine doesn't tho.
WHY have you not used this on a surplus overnighter yet???
I purchased one of these tents and was able to find the one with the optional mesh doors to keep the bugs out and still get the air flow and it is a great tent!
I would like to hear your thoughts on the austrian pup tent . its just A lightweight nylon version of the us issue tent . I love mine ,but you might spot some stuff I am not aware of
I picked up a “NATO” tent which looks exactly like the French one in this video. Do you know if they’re the same tent or is there a difference?
Keepshooting.com indicates tent is "out of stock"?
Wonder if more will be available in the near future Luke?
I know this is an old video, but have a question. Were you actually in a branch of the military or do you just like military items?
Awesome review Luke! Curious if you have any family tents that you could review?
"testers" of the French tent drive me nuts when they "test" the tent in a rain that is more of a drizzle when we want to know how a tent does in a real rain. in a big storm with a lot of wind, the rain will be going sideways, and that is the real test of a tent. There is a lot of interest in this tent, so I am sure that you will give it a good test.
Hey Luke, great review as always. That's a great deal for that tent. For that price I wouldn't mind to do some seam sealing. I love watching your videos on military surplus. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos Luke , I can't wait till the next one.
nice review man, i got the same tent from Sportsman Guide 3 years ago except mine is canvas and it has a canvas rain fly, pretty nice but heavy. take care brother.
A real F1 Commando tent has one entrance with bug netting only...Also an additional fly sheet to cover it ...Look at Bushcraft Boy...Video......
u did not set it up properly.
hi luke 1 st awesome vids man keep them coming now a short question have you ever patcht a inner tent and how did you done it i have a couple of holes in my tent and i have no idea how to patch it.
Seems like you can shed some weight by using lighter stakes and trekking poles instead of the ones that come with it
Looks similar to a zpack tent, without a vestibule....and dang heavy
I wish I had the original canvas F1 tent. It's been discontinued, heavy and hot, but it's such a rugged tent.
Varusteleka is selling them. That's where I got mine. I can't wait to take it out into the woods
I weighed my stakes and they are 2 pound and the 2 poles are another pound. Tent and all were 7 pound.
Super tent ! 👍👍👍🎖️🎖️🎖️🎖️🎖️💪💪💪
Great design for the little bit of $$$ it costs. Nice first tent for a cub Scout. Aloha
Love the military surplus... this is a kool lil ⛺, what a great deal! Should review 👊
You must have gotten one of the last ones. They are currently out of stock. Cool looking tent though.
Those poles don't look lightweight. I guess you could use hiking poles instead and save the weight. Like the mesh window on the side.
The poles are aluminum, so they are lightweight. The only caveat is that they have a metal spring in them, sort of like the shock cord in tent poles for the dome tent. I took out the springs and the poles weigh very little.
those vents are king. more companies need to take this on board. I have a Luxe Sil minipeak: good ventilation via twin top vents. A Force 10 Helium: decent ventilation, could use top vents. and a mountain hardwear tent with nay vents and...condensation central. I have a Ferrino Chaos and top vent and gaps all round the bottom..condensation minimal. No way would I carry the French Commando tent but the venting options are awesome. i wish my helium had that but it wouldn't weight 1.2 kg if it was so.
weigh...would ya believe.
thank you im from Poland
Iove the channel love military surplus makes my day when I get home and I see military surplus video to watch
Its not 40 its 50 $ in that website
Interesting surplus tent. Lone Wolf Mountain is looking beautiful this spring.
Luke , again a Video, where can these be found ?thanks ,keep up the great work , Ron
I've got the f1 this isn't it😂
