Dude, your channel is amazing! I retired from the Army 9 months ago after a 26yr career. Iraq x2, Afghanistan x2, and Poland. I love exploring and learning new cultures. I'm currently watching your LA video and understand the dynamic when your brain thinks in multiple languages at the same time. I've been learning Russian for the last few years. There's just something that draws me to their culture. The language is beyond beautiful. Is it possible to DM you? There's much more I'd like to ask you.
If I was 50 years younger, I would move to Russia in a heartbeat. I would also live in the countryside like Lars and his family. I hope you get back to Siberia as soon as possible! I love your channel and content. Thank you.
According to the recollections of our Veranians about their meeting with the allies on the Elbe. Americans are very similar to Russians, and the British are arrogant.
This is another great video! My grandparents had one of those chests, but much bigger. It was beautifully painted with traditional Hungarian red tulips. Inside of the walls had lots of money glued to it, a reminder of the great depression of the 1930s. These almost insignificant things are the ones that we tend not to forget. Amazing stuff!
I guess, you can say yes, villages are decreasing in population, because more and more people are moving to cities. If there is some kind of businesses in villages, then they have a chance of upgrading to selo (not yet a town, but already more than a village) and then keep on existing. In USSR it was pretty common that old people would choose to live the rest of their lives in quiet and cheap village with 1 or 3 shops, but now it isn't.
same in most countries around the world. Here in Australia kids from the smaller towns tend to go to capitol cities for university, fair chance not many return home after their studies have finished
My grandmother had a chest like that. She was not Russian but she was from the East Europe. I think it's still in the old house, where my old man still lives.
I watched your stream with Igor and in a note to this video as well I want to add about reviving cities outside of Moscow, mainly in Siberia I would say, the thing is USSR pursued much different goals in state development and lots of industries, for which cities and villages were built are long gone or are not that important any more, or rather changed in technology. Thus places populated before for working opportunities lost this value, this is important in perspective of now capitalistic Russia (this is not a rant about capitalism just inevitable part of system change) where government and private investors lacking return to support big development of these places, with people moving out its only worse as it might be done in vain in a few years, also who will keep maintainence and adding onto it. Sure basic utilities should be necessary in any case, most of the time its done through tourism, bringing more Russian to visit would help, that's in most cases on regions or cities to implement such plans. People moving to cities is a cycle, as I wrote about it under video about prices of houses, similar to development, people seek opportunity thus money, thus better life. It goes around, prices rise and people then go full circle back to living in villages due to their better capital (mostly middle class) and overpriced cities, to seek slower pased villages with better money management. It is sure long way to go, I can only compare to my country Czech Republic, which is much smaller so things move quicker, but it went kind of similar way lf moving from Soviet block, industry went to crisis, countryside was in desolate state for more than decade, then EU pumped money into certain development (this is for another topic, just take it as it is..) so many public areas got lot better, now for few years people started to buy properties back, investing in small towns and villages, financing projects with their enterprises, local tourism got a lot bigger which helps a big time, things are nicer, more small business rise up and people tend to care about litter and looks of their towns.
Since i like Russia so much, i know i have way to romantic view about Russia. So to fix this a bit i look at channels like Vasya in The Hay and so on to get a more realistic and balanced view. This do not prevent me from loving Russia, but it prevent me from having only a romantic view of it. With the growing economy Russia now, i hope this will benefit many rural areas too. 🙂

Hey man, welcome back to Russia! It's true that many Russian villages are dying. It's a problem that dates back to the USSR as the country had to industrialized rapidly and needed a massive workforce, meaning that many villagers had to move to cities to work in factories. The villages that remained were largely collectivized to feed the growing urban population. Another factor is the fact that many of those abandoned villages were no longer economically feasible as they were located on historical trade routes that have become defunct over time. What's reassuring now though is that many Russians who have managed to secure remote work contacts have opted to buy plots of land in otherwise dying villages and build proper houses as opposed to cramped city apartments. I'd actually consider that should I get a remote work contact at my next job; I'm a village boy myself, and can't imagine raising kids in a city. BTW are you planning any trips to Moscow any time soon? The wife and myself love your videos, it would be lovely to meet up. Would it be okay if I DM you?
I always look forward to your posts, you always crack me up, specially sounding like a carnivore eating some road kill on the kissing of lake Bikal, omg that was funny but truth of the matter is that i would have done the same thing.
They could be bought easily with land, but they are deep in the first and that sort of life is hard for modern people. Now they are being re used as lumber for future homes.
I have heard of abandoned villages all over Russia. I don't understand because most of these villages are in good agricultural areas, where they could have prosperous farms. Is it just because of road conditions? Does the government discourage small farms? I know that after the revolution, they killed or drove off the Kulaks (independent prosperous farmers). Did collectivization make farming distasteful to the people in Soviet times?
You may be partially correct about how soviet politics affected rural population. On the other hand modern technologies just requier very fewer people to work on land to produce enough food and after all climate conditions and soil quality on the most part of habitable russian territory make farming maybe possible, but hardly economically reasonable, when a comparable tiny patch in south can easily feed whole country

I truly love Russia and its history and being in such places you can’t help but feel like a Time Machine. Thanks for watching the videos happy new year

I truly love Russia and its history and being in such places you can’t help but feel like a Time Machine. Thanks for watching the videos happy new year
Happy new year Daniel, Ksenia, and Lars. been missing in action due to ptsd/anxiety issues. playing catch up mate. 3.30am i'll watch this tomorrow.
Happy new year! This is a re upload while I get my medical things figured out in Mexico

It didn't look so cold. How cold did the nights get when camping?
1-3 degrees
Thanks!
You’re absolutely too kind thanks so much!
That’s what “urbanization” means. Happens in every country
True
I would like postcard or page out of old newspaper
Older videos smart one
