dude "I Claudius" is classic and a masterpiece for TV though at that time CG was not even heard off!!!! .... it was from the books called " I Claudius" and "Claudius The God" written by Robert von Ranke Graves (24 July 1895 - 7 December 1985)!!!! Robert Graves was a British poet, historical novelist, critic, and classicist --- produced more than 140 works in his lifetime.
thanks for the info !
I , Claudius is great!
I Claudius is and will forever be a masterpiece
Pillars of the Earth was such an awesome series. I enjoyed it just as much as that old animated "documentary" on how a cathedral is built.
Cool glad u liked it theres a sequel series to it as well which isnt as good but still decent
@@HistorySpark Was that the one with the messed up priest and Cynthia Nixon playing his totally evil mother?
@@HistorySpark I like cathedral of the sea u should watch the new sequal
The video game version on Steam is absolutely amazing as well and a must play for even non gamers.
Totally agree! I enjoyed the series as much as the book.
Pillars of the Earth was FANTASTIC!
Yup have u seen the sequel to it yet?
@@HistorySpark Yes. Tried twice. The first time did not get into it because it was clearly not in the same league as Pillars production-wise. A couple years later I tried again and watched it. It had good actors (Indira Varma and Miranda Richardson were good as usual), but the series was just not that good. Completely forgettable.
Interesting selection. I have seen some but not all of them. I have noticed you might have missed the Shogun miniseries with Richard Chamberlain made in 1980s. I know it's a personal choise but anyway
I haven't watched that series, I'll definitely check it tho thanks for the recommendation
Shogun is great! It’s one of those miniseries that I just keep rewatching periodically!
Shogun was great-
Normies: I learned everything there is to know about the Borgia in Ezio's Assassin's Creed
Lol assassins creed where most kids learn most of their history from these days. My personal favourite is Black Flag and Origins, great games
as for Catherine The Great ---- The Russian version called Ekaterina now in it's 4th season its really much better than the HBO....
thanks for the recommendation, ill definitely check it out !
The name of Joseph's sister in the Red Tent is Dinah
Thanks for the clarification
Borgia is the best historical tv show ever
Yes definitely one of the best
No, I, Claudius is.
There are two Spanish series about the Catholic kings at the time where they expelled the last Muslims and Columbus appears, it´s called "Isabel". And the other one is about the King Carlos, the V of the Holy Roman Empire and I of Spain, it is called "Carlos, Rey Emperador". On the official website you can see it entirely in Spanish, but I think google can help you find subtitles.
I've had Isabel recommended to me before but havent heard of Carlos Rey Emperador, I'll be sure to check them out. Are they available to stream on any platforms?
What about Spartacus or Marco Polo? Don't they at least get a honourable mention?
They are both pretty popular shows so not really a correct fit for this list
Thank you for this.ive seen most, but there were a few that I havnt which is great. And also I noticed that you've put the channel the shows ate on now .very helpful. Good job with this!
Thank you, I appreciate your support and feedback
I think I, Claudius is the best of the lot, although I haven't seen a lot of them. I did watch Borgia, but definitely thought I, Claudius was better. As a Hungarian I'm glad you included Attila.
El Cid is really a good show. It seems like they will continue it for a long time.
Yea I see them getting at least 2 more seasons out of the show
What is definitely missing here is the series "Hernan" about the conquest of Mexico by Hernando Cortes. One of the best historical series in recent years.
I'll definitely check it out thanks for the recommendation
Thanks! New show to watch! Have you seen Isabel by chance?
I am so glad to see My Country The New Age included on this list. I saw it months ago and it’s still with me. I play music videos of the ost all the time. To those of you who have stated you haven’t see My Country yet, give it a shot, I don’t think you will regret it. It’s one of my all time favorites. It being Korean, it’s definitely different from Hollywood. But the bromance between the two main characters is phenomenal. Thanks again HS for recommending this series to me.
Yea its definitely a show that sticks with u after it's done, I wish Netflix would produce more south Korean shows during the Joseon dynasty. A sequel on bangwons rules or something
@@HistorySpark After watching My Country, I deep dove into the Joseon Dynasty and Bang Won’s reign to see if he kept his promises to Seo Hwi. I would love it if Netflix did a series as you suggested on Bang Won’s rule.
@@HistorySpark It sounds like a little more realism wouldn't go amiss.
I hate it when characters receive life threatening/life changing injuries but are totally recovered a few days later.
@@paulleverton9569 yea i mean realism is definitely something that would have improved the show. Aside from just even recovering from wounds after 10 minutes, I hate it where like 2 guys can go and beat 20-30 soldiers without breaking a sweat. It starts to look a bit like dynasty warriors after a bit haha
Been meaning to watch my country new age but haven't got around to it yet but reading your comment I am going to start watching it.
The Pillars of the Earth is a great read. I didn't know there was a TV series going to track this done.
Yea there's also a sequel series to it as well
Okay, I say this as someone who LIKES the Pillars of the Earth and World Without End shows: if you want accuracy, look elsewhere. My biggest problem with Pillars is that Maud is basically an OC, instead of being Matilda. They're good shows, and I've watched them several times, I just kind of have to treat it like a fantasy so it doesn't bother me.
ive never read the books so i guess i enjoyed the show even more for that reason !
WOW, Domina is a find of the year for me
Yea it's a pretty cool show a bit different from other historical shows
YOU ARE RIGHT. IF THEY HAVE A AMERICAN ACCENT, I CAN'T WATCH IT. I DO LOVE THE SHOWES.THANK YOU.
To the list,
NORTH AND SOUTH; a miniseries at the time, Patrick Swayze was amazing, God rest his soul. The story alone, the players, Lincoln, Davies, Lee and Jackson. The power packed cast.
Also HOW THE WEST WAS WON - Tommy Lee Jones, and plenty more.
THE THORN BIRDS; a must. Xo
Thanks for the recommendations
Yes, Thorn Birds
I, Claudius. #1 instead of #10. Nothing can top Derek Jacobi and John Hurt.
yes it is a great tv show :D
I agree.
I, Claudius, great series to watch.
Yes it is
Truly one of the most eye-opening series to understand that part of the past
Great list!! I will be checking out el cid looks really good
Its awesome and available on Amazon prime
the pillars of the earth was good. watched it twice. it has a follow up series - to the ends of the earth. it takes place in kingsbridge 200 years after pillars.
yes both series are great
error on the red tent series - the daughter is Dinah, not Delila (who was the philistine wife to samson and caused his demise)
thanks for the clarification
Delilah is the woman who cause samson's demise. Dinah is the daughter of Jacob, sister to Joseph son of Jacob
watched the first series of El Cid, was really good
The second series is out, which is excellent as well
I had no idea there was a series based on The Red Tent. Thanks! ❤
If you like my country new age that much I recommend you "six flying dragons". It's a corean historical tv show about the events of my country new age, however it's much longer and depp dive into the political side of this conflict. The main character is Yi Bang Won, you know the prince who overthrow hiss father. We fooow him from his childhood until he become king. So you understand the story from his point of view and you see all he did for his father and why he decided to revolt against him. It's really a good historical tv show , one of the best i've seen, there are 50 episodes, it's long but it's really worth watching.
It sounds really interesting, is it available to stream anywhere and is the cinematography and acting as good as my country?
@@HistorySpark It was on Netflix but now It’s not there anymore. But I live in France so many in your area it’s still there. And yeah the cinematography and acting is really good.
what i`m missing is peter the graet played by the German actors jan niklas and maximilian schell. and don`t forget winds of war and winds of war and ashes written by Hermann Wouk the aothor of the Kain mutiny
ive not seen any of those tv shows, thanks for the recommendations
for comparison
BORGIA... v Borgias... 2 simmilar shows , both with good acting and plot......
Yes the borgias never got completed tho which was quite unfortunate
I have seen them all except My Country and Catherine the Great but will have a look for them. Agree with you totally on Borgia but it was taken off whilst I was halfway through the third series and I'm still annoyed. Have you seen Ekaterina, same story but in Russian with subtitles and runs to three series. Absolutely brilliant, acting, script, costumes scenery couldn't fault it and possibly has more detail than Catherine. Another series I love was The Ming Dynasty. In Chinese with subtitles but one of the best I have seen. Only one series but runs to 63 episodes and the translated subtitles are hilarious at times. I think this would be my number one with I Claudius second; but then I grew up with Claudius so to speak. Love your videos so keep them coming
Thanks for ur 2 recommendation I'll definitely check them out and thanks for supporting the channel. My Country is on Netflix
Ekaterina is a wonderfull film and quite correct from historical point of view (we checked the facts in wiki), but Catherine the Great is a nonsense. The script-writers don't know anything about Russian culture and history and even didn't try to read smth.
I remember seeing The Borgias with Jeremy Irons as the pope and THAT was cancelled before it ended. This one is a different one, but if it suffered the same fate... (???)
There are a lot of korean and chinese tv shows which are awesome. Their storylines are amazing. Its entirely different from the hollywood ones
Yes, I've seen a few series but the problem is most of the time the subtitles are just terrible. Netflix should produce more historical Korean and Chinese shows
If they would only dubbed all those shows in English, would be great
@@zyzla87 trust me dubbed movies are so bad... Its better to watch in the original language with subtitles. Thats way better
i claudius is a masterpiece of * complicated roman intrigue and poltics, family dramas*
by bbc
hbo, catherine the great* the rise of russia as a world super power...
el cid by amazon prime, great overview of spanish history...
Very nicely summarized
Tons of Asian historical dramas
I think I could create 10 lists on good asian historical dramas, but the subtitles on them are not always great tho especially for the lower budget shows
best thing about i, claudius ... BRIAN BLESSED
yup !
"Quick as boiled asparagus."
I've seen Wolfhall, Pillars of the Earth, El Cid, and «The Borgias» (I haven't seen «Borgia» though) and I heard about Catherine the Great. Not sure biblical shows should be considered historic 🤔
Yea i get where ur coming from, but there was a historical subplot in Ad kingdom and empire that made it a good historical show for me rather than a biblical one
@@HistorySpark Yeah I understand, and I also like those shows, I just don't watch them thinking I'm watching history and trying to learn historical facts and details I might not know about
But somehow Christianity must have been spreading. Some facts had to happen. Maybe the Acts of Apostles are not TOTALLY historical, but almost surely Paul travelled like it is said in those texts, and wrote those letters. The hard and humble beginnings of the Church can be seen through the texts, as long as the political situation of that corner of the Empire. I would totally consider "historical" a show telling those stories.
@@Laurelin70 What we know: Someone wrote stories about a Jesus and that started a huge religion. What we don’t know : was the things they wrote about a Jesus true? History is usually about things we know. Facts about christianity are history. Facts about Jesus are not
I just tried watching Catherine the Great and it is honestly one of the worst shows i have ever watched. The writing is absolutely terrible and they keep repeatedly spoon feeding the most OBVIOUS plot points to the viewer over and over and over again in the most childish way i have ever seen. That show is literally written for idiots by idiots. I agree with most on your lists but....damn, lol.
haha, yea i totally get what u mean but glad u agree with most of the other shows in the list!
The best ad can get it on dvd sorry 😂 sad with danish text rent it back then with danish title yeah how come? Also hill street blues who was so great and still with danish subtitles so much gold please subtile
Happy to see Borgia, one of my favorite TV with extradordinary John Doman. the other version with Jeremy Irons is not so good.
I Claudius is great. If you like Livia ( the emperor's wife who poisoned everybody ;) you'll like Domina season 1 ( with Livia to ;).
The Emperor Claudius appears also in a great episode of Britannia, an excellent TV show abandoned after 3 top seasons
and don't miss Masada with Peter O Toole , my best mini serie
Please explain how 'Zena: Warrior Princess' was left off you list!
I'll assume you had an 11:39 time limit.
That's going to be featured in a future list but xena is a very popular show this is a list of little known shows so xena isnt a good fit
@@HistorySpark Thank you for responding. Zena is pretty un-historic, but it would be fun to see the show covered.
@@HistorySpark I, Claudius is little known. It was smash hit when it was shown.
I'm really bummed El Cid didn't go 5 or 6 seasons or at least until Sancho's death
season 3 is coming out next month i believe
@@HistorySpark I don't think so. Even IMDB who left the series open ended for a long time says the series ended in 2021 with the "second" season (it was 1 production)
I have seen all except the South Korean My Country.
Nice, make sure u watch it u won't regret it
@@HistorySpark I will, I'm one of those people who doesn't mind subtitles as long as it's a good movie.
Ekaterina is a wonderfull film and quite correct from historical point of view (we checked the facts in wiki), but Catherine the Great is a nonsense. The script-writers don't know anything about Russian culture and history and even didn't try to read smth.
In your title it says "historical TV shows", so why is there a series about bible characters? Cause surely the historicity of those can be very much doubted.
Because there is a really interesting plot which focuses on the relationship between Rome and the Jewish priests which is pretty historically interesting and not really biblical at all, so I didn't mind including it in this list
@@HistorySpark OK, then I guess we have different definitions of historical dramas. I always assumed those were about real characters and events like Katherine the Great, Ceasar etc. Samson and Delilah as you say in the video are (in my mind) fictional characters from the bible. I have read quite a few claims on other websites about their story being true. Well, I guess, if that were the case we'd all by now also have irrefutable evidence of the existence of Jesus.
Pillars of the Earth for me is the best example of a historical drama as it doesn't focus on the characters which are of course fictional, but on the life of people like them in the 12 century in their struggle to survive in and around the building of churches.
All in all, there is sometimes a fine line between historical and fictional, but whenever the plot involves characters or events from the Bible I tend to take that with more than just a grain of salt.
The Cleopatras bbc 1970 story of the Ptolomies….
thanks for the recommendation!
Ptolemy
rome 2005
It's a great show but this list focuses on shows that people may not have heard of
Rome is a great series. You will enjoy it!
Where is Magnificent Century⁉️

Thanks so much, I appreciate the support!
caucasian attila vs classic roman legionaries…? nope.
fair enough, its a good film with a very limited budget so alot of historical inaccuracies to be expected
😚🤩
:)
I watched Attila. But I have to disagree with you. It sucked, really sucked
Ah fair enough, I respect that u might not have liked it. It's a bit B grade but I thought it was decent, surprisingly Attila the Hun has never had a big tv show or movie dedicated to him yet
@@HistorySpark It would be difficult to make a TV series about Attila. We don't know a lot about him, we don't know a lot about the Huns and the Hunic Empire, and the Empire lasted a very short time.
@@petion2013yes u r totally right we have very little knowledge on the Huns history but this might be one of those situations where Hollywood being liberal with history might actually work in its favour to create a really unique and cool show.
@@HistorySpark That wouldn't work now because Hollywood has gone woke. That would've turned into some bullshit about racial oppression and white privilege etc.
