- This is my list of what I consider to be the Top 10 medieval movies of all time. This list contains 10 epic medieval films and epic medieval movies, some of these movies you may not have heard of before and others are the most popular medieval movies ever created. If you are interested in movies like 300 and Braveheart then these movies will definitely be of interest to you. This list of best medieval movies of all time focuses primarily on ancient history movies but some films are also from what can be classified as relatively modern history.
If you're going to watch Kingdom of Heaven make sure it's the directors cut
I totally agree, the only version to be watching
I've always heard this but not yet seen the director's cut. Can you tell me what the DC includes that makes it better? Not debating your choice but just trying to get information.
@@aeliasventura I'm not the best person to ask, my brain doesn't work very well and I forget things, if you have 18 minutes to spare search "Kingdom of Heaven | Why the Director's Cut is Better", it explains it much better than I ever could.
@@aeliasventura a few things first it's a lot longer so if you enjoyed the movie you're going to enjoy it being longer. Second it makes a lot of things make sense and really adds to the plot and story. Many movies had it seems really don't this movie it does. It makes it flow much better and adds much depth and loses nothing from it. A bit of a different movie in why people do things and plot progress and for that very happy . Sorry for english
And don’t take anything seriously (it’s not historically accurate) but still a good movie
'The Lion In Winter' should definitely be on this list. No battle scenes but what it has is an outstanding script with stellar performances from the likes of Peter O'Toole (Henry II), Katherine Hepburn (Eleanor of Aquitaine), Anthony Hopkins (Richard the Lionheart), Timothy Dalton (Philip II of France) John Castle (Geoffrey) and Nigel Terry (John). An absolute masterpiece of dialogue, acting and set design.
I've never heard of it, but thanks for the recommendation I'll definitely check it out
Absolutely. It’s a great movie.
An awesome movie indeed.
How could you leave Monty Python and the Holy Grail off of the list!? There is no medieval film more historically accurate than this!
“Just a flesh wound.”
Count to three no more no less
Help, help, I’m being repressed!
@@Einar730 One, Two, Five!
I know right
When I was about 6 years old, I had this huge obsession with ancient warfare. Especially medieval. I played so many games on Roblox based on ancient warfare. I’m now 14, 8 years later. The phase has come back once again. With more gore tolerance, and knowledge about it, looking for some more to satisfy this phase. Thank you so much for this video. I’ll definitely be watching all of them 😌
Braverheart....Hysterical more than historical
It's entertainment.
It is a really entertaining film tho
@@HistorySpark not arguing that, but its a bit like labelling 'Mars Attacks' as a good Cosmology movie.
@@andygreen2765 ya tell that to transformers or lord of the rings🤣🤣🤣
A movie that may be hard to find but is one of my all time medieval movie favorites since I was a kid is called "The Warlord" with Charleton Heston, Richard Boone and Guy Stockwell. I think it portrays what life was like rather accurately for a movie made in the late 1950's and the siege battles are great.
Completely agree. A grim but strangely compelling and beautiful film. Heston's best work.
Thanks for the recommendations I will definitely try to watch it at some point
@@ankemala When you consider when it was made, I think it stands out even more. The effects, costuming, etc. hold up well. Heston and Stockwell play so well off of each other. The brother who resents taking care of the other who, in turn, resents being taken care of is just one of the really good storylines. As you said, a grim story. Based on a tragedy "The Lovers, if I remember correctly. I met Heston when I was 18, he came to speak at my school. I had maybe 10 seconds with him and told him I thought he was great in that movie. He laughed and said "You saw that?" and shook my hand. I guess it's not one of his favorites but I agree I think he played it perfectly.
Exactly. Couldn't remember the name, only the Heston was in it.
I still have a VHS copy. Great film for sure.
The absence of Excalibur on this list is ludicrous. Excalibur IS the list.
Holds ranks 1-10 at least lol
These are historical movies, Excalibur is a fantasy.
@@Pucukax So that excludes it from being a great movie set in Medieval times?
@@Pucukax excalibur is historically accurate, definitely happened.
@@Pucukax Historical, that's a stretch.
1. The Reckoning (2003)
2. The Name of the Rose (1986)
3. Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Cool choices
Robin Hood: Directed by Ridley Scott. With Russell Crowe...most underrated movie....masterpiece!!!
I have watched the film, it was much better than I was expecting, but i needed subtitles to understand what Russell Crowe was saying half the time tho lol
@@HistorySpark I'm glad you watched, at least!
I also really liked the movie
It really was such a good film the best one I have seen. Great casting, soundtracks scene choreography and the politics between the Barron’s and king John was great.
If we are doing Robin Hood movies, men in tights was the best.
Though 1501 is rightly considdered early modern period, I would highly recommend Flesh and Blood from 1985 as a great medieval movie. It was responsible for me to become an historical reenactor for 25 years.
Thanks for the recommendations
Being generous with braveheart I think
hahaha ur not wrong
Watched "The Last Duel" last night, would easily join your list and personally, I'd have "The King" much higher, I enjoyed it much more than "The Outlaw King". But it's your list, not mine
I think The King is not historically correct as the outlaw king because it is based one some Shakespeare book or smt
I preferred the outlaw king as I found the kings plot to not be interesting and as high stakes as outlaw king
First of all great video man. I was surprised to see Outlaw/King on this list, let alone at #1. I just watched it the other day and absolutely loved every scene of it. After watching it, the story of him being an outlaw and being chased around by the English really reminded me of young guns and the story of billy the kid running from the law. After experiencing this movie just one time it became an all time favorite for me. Great story about Robert The Bruce, definitely recommend.
Thanks, I really enjoyed the outlaw king and always try to promote it whenever I can
What a terrible film that was with atrocious accents.
One of the best medieval movies has to be "Macbeth" featuring Michael Fassbinder. For sheer brutality, it has yet to be matched. For those who can't follow Shakespeare, subtitles are
recommended. A fantastic film.
I haven't watched it yet but I'll be sure to check it out
it was too slow paced for me but brother on brother murder spree was real af
Don't forget A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger ;) It has The Joker, Robert Baratheon, and Vision in it!
I'll definitely check it out, thanks
And the pilot of the ship serenity too from Firefly. 😎👍
This is one of my all time favorites. I watch this movie at least twice a month.
Yes to this! Probably the most fun and enjoyable medieval era movie to boot!
N.B. If you're going to watch 'Kingdom of Heaven', make sure it's the director's cut, which is excellent. The original release was a confusing mess.
I agree, the directors cut is definitely the best version to watch
Yes, the director's cut is a lot better movie than the theatrical release. While I enjoyed the original the director's cut was a big improvement.
I am Scottish and I approve this list. Scotland. Scotland. Scotland.
Freedom!!!!
@@HistorySpark freedumb unfortunately. We are one nation now, there is too much nonsensical William Wallace thinking where we live.
I’ve seen the majority of these and love them all
Cool, which ones ur favorite?
For some insane reason, Mel Gibson has an inane hatred of the British.
Despite the Brits loving him and Hollywood ostracising him for years, he still prefers Americans and goes out of his way to promote a negative view of all things British in all his films.
Very weird
Mel Gibson is not a normal person and I wouldn't waste too much time thinking about all the crazy stuff he does
Well he is American of Irish extraction from Australia. Not exactly a smooth evolution to partners. Just saying for a friend ...
The King isn't necessarily supposed to be historically accurate. Its based more on Henry V by Shakespeare. Loved the movie and had some issues with Henry's depiction but it does state its supposed to reflect the play written not historical records.
I havent watched it yet but I have heard complaints that the battle was not very accurate and didn't depict the British use of longbows and all around strategy but thats just what I've heard
@@ambeatch yeah its ripped right out of the play. doesnt show henry's tactical abilitl at all. it shows his captain that makes the hard choices and sacrifices himself so henry can finish the fight.
Yes u r correct
The fact that Arn:Knight Templar is on this list means you know your stuff..
Haha thanks
The director's cut and or roadshow edition of Kingdom of Heaven is the only version to see. As it is eclipses the theatrical release in every way possible
Yes I totally agree
Agreed same as lotr I can't watch theatrical anymore
That was amazing. Thank you for all your research and for this video.
Your welcome, I am glad you enjoyed the video
I think Jeanne D´arc should be on here.
It's a good film, I've seen it I might include it in a future list, need to rewatch it tho !
If you haven't seen it, watch "The Reckoning" (2003) with Paul Bettany, Willem Dafoe and Brian Cox. This film follows a runaway priest and a group of actors in Norman England as they attempt to solve the murder of a young boy. It really nails the superstition, religion and culture of the time. It is based on a book (which has a more satisfying ending, IMO), but the cinematography of the film really gets you into the place.
Thanks for the recommendation
Braveheat is Hollywood rubbish. There are many good medieval films made in France and Italy and they are historically accurate. They should be on this list.
Which ones do u recommend?
Name the list please !!
@@soniasaldarriaga5166 2 lists were posted at the time but they have been removed.
Braveheart #3.... that movie is utter garbage. Sometimes good action cannot make up for a historical movie that has nothing to do with history.
It's a very historically inaccurate film but I did enjoy it. The plot was good and the choreography was great as well
Henry V with Kenneth Brennagh is better than most of these. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers." Beat that.
Right on !!
Good list but I would ad Lion in Winter and Becket
Thanks for the recommendations
Thank you for the list! I really liked Arn.
Me too, have u watched the second film as well?
@@HistorySpark oh, yes!
The Lion in Winter is in a class of its own.
Thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out
Any good Shakespeare adaptation is better than any other Medieval film.
Henry V (Kenneth Branagh or Laurence Olivier)
Macbeth (Roman Polanski)
King Lear (Scofield)
Hamlet (Laurence Olivier)
Richard III (Laurence Olivier)
For a switch, check out Kurosawa's "Ran", a Japanese film based on King Lear, with a little bit of Macbeth. If you open up your list to non-European based films during the Medieval period, then quite a number of possibilities are available.
Pre-1970
Ivanhoe (Elizabeth Taylor)
Robin Hood (Errol Flynn)
Lion in Winter (Katherine Hepburn)
The Court Jester (Danny Kaye Comedy)
Alexander Nevsky (Eisenstein)
Ivan the Terrible (Eisenstein)
As far as more recent fare, check out "The Last Kingdom" series based on Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction of Alfred the Great. Or "Pillars of the Earth" series based on Ken Follett's novels.
A very clever movie "The Universal Spider" is available in full on RUclips and focuses on the difficulties of royal succession.
Started some of these movies before and bailed early…. subject matter fine and in my interest genre but bogged down quickly. You got two on the list for me…. EL CID will always be the top tier… from the acting, writing, cinematography for the time and historical significance. Kingdom of Heaven deserves to be on the list somewhere with the caveat that
Which films did u not like? I agree with ur statement Orlando Bloom is a great ensemble character but hes not talented enough to be a lead actor
The War Lord also starring Charleston Heston is a good watch. The Last Valley with Omar Shariff and Michael Caine if the thirty year war period is still medieval is great.
Thanks for the recommendations
The Messenger, Macbeth (2015), Seven Samurai, Ran, Excaliber, Henry V, Becket, The Lion in Winter, Hamlet (1990)
Rob Roy, is another great movie.
Excalibur! The greatest movie of all time!
Charlton Heston classic El CId is a great movie
Yes it's a great film
It just cannot be an easy thing to make a film -------any film----------depicting this era of approximately 10 centuries. More than anything, what is most needed is a full commitment from the studio or whoever is financing, & a director who knows & loves this period, & how to put it on the big screen. At now 82 y/o, Ridley Scott is one of the few who meets this qualification . Thus, I am hoping, " The Last Duel " will meet your criteria, sir. -----------------MJL, 75 y/o
I have heard good things about the last duel but unfortunately I haven't got a chance to watch it yet
Absolutely loved the video
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the video
Good list. I would have put 'The Warlord' somewhere on that list.
thanks for the recommendation, ill be sure to check it out!
The king is a fantastic film !
Yes it's a great film
Thank you for tracking my algorithm .
Your welcome
You Earned yourself a sub
Thank you for subbing :)
Can heartily recommend Arn.
Yea it's a great movie
@@HistorySpark I do really like using native languages in historic movies and utilizing actors from each region. It brings the authenticity up a couple of notches.
Orlando Bloom lacks the presence for the role
I fully agree, hes great as an ensemble character but not in a lead role
Jokes on me, I've already watched all of these!😢
Have u seen the films in this list -
m.ruclips.net/video/Vvz9If9bdpg/видео.html
@@HistorySpark I liked your video, but sadly I've watched all those too, historical genre is pretty much all that I read and watch since elementary school, my teacher's nicknamed me "Old Soul" it ended up being more literal when I hit adulthood, I got white hair when I got to about eighteen years of age, don't mind it though, women think it's beautiful, though it becomes easier for people to tease you.
I know right
The title says medieval films not historically accurate films
Haha that is true
I have watched all of these movies except for Saladdin. I guess I am a medieval movie addict.
Have u seen the films in this list -
m.ruclips.net/video/Vvz9If9bdpg/видео.html
the Kingdom of Heaven - is worth watching only in director's cut version... compering it to original theatrical version is pointless as nearly 40 min. of film is missing, leaving some inconsistencies and plot holes, making some characters shallow etc. ... Directors cut 9/10 theatrical cut 5/10
I totally agree the directors cut is definitely the best version of the film
How dare you not mention the last duel. It's one of the best films of it's type to come to theaters in a long time
I haven't watched the film yet but I definitely will revise this list and include the last duel if it's as good as u say it is
I didn't think it was all that great, it was long and drawn out with reusing several scenes multiple times, and really a bit boring. Not nearly enough battle scenes, but what there was were good. If I wasn't waiting to see who won the duel I would have walked out.
"The name of the Rose" best medieval movie ever.
Another version of it was released 2019, now as a TV-serie with John Turturro. Not as good but still worth watching.
@@niklasmoquist6116 But still the book is the best version of
Thanks for the recommendation I will try to watch the original and 2019 version of it
I definitely think that Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) should've been placed before Netflix's Outlaw King. I also think that Netflix's The King with Timothee Chalamet was a better medieval film than Outlaw King.
That's interesting, how come u don't like the outlaw king?
@@HistorySpark It's not that I don't like Outlaw King. I am just a big fan of Ridley Scott's epics and think that the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is a better movie and cinematic experience.
EDIT: While I do enjoy Braveheart and Kingdom of Heaven a lot more than Outlaw King, I do give the latter credit for being more historically accurate than the former two. I do, however, think the other two are superior in storytelling, with Kingdom of Heaven striking a good balance between historically accuracy and storytelling.
so none of the more realistic movies are even mentioned. "The name of the Rose" beats all of them by miles, "Blood and Flesh" is getting a bit wild at the end besides this its
a great depiction of late medival times. As a series which is trying real hard to be authentic and doing great I recommend "Cadfael" kind of a medival Sherlock Holmes
Thanks for the recommendations
@@HistorySpark There is a television version of "The Name Of The Rose" that is infinitely better than the film version which massacred the story line in the novel and reduced the whole thing to a 2 dimensional charicature.
Holy cow yes, ''The Name of The Rose'' is such an amazing flick. Watched it about a month ago, never heard of it prior (which is surprising considering its lead is Sean Connery). Bout a week after that I stumbled across Cadfael and binged it over a weekend. Such an underrated gem of a show.
Please make a video on upcoming historical tv shows...
I already have :) - m.ruclips.net/video/Y4a2CZrGQM8/видео.html
Excalibur
Good film
Seriously which historical adaptation is not biased and partisan smh
Do yourself a favor and watch the directors cut of "Kingdom of Heaven" instead of the theatrical release. It fills in soooo much that the theatrical edited out.
I totally agree, definitely the best version of the film
Damnnnnnn! I saw a lot of game of thrones actors in these movies lol. Anyone notice the red woman? Lol. Ned Stark, stannis, the red woman, the wildling that could warg into animals... this is great lol
Yea I suspect the popularity of Game of thrones will mean we will see the actors in a lot more movies and shows
Dose anyone know the movie, where at the beginning a kid gets hit with something and gets ptsd, a village gets burned, at the end they are on a hill pushing rocks down on an army??
outlaw king is the best movie
I 100% Agree
Where is Henry V (1989)? One of the best medieval movies in my opinion..and one more is missing "The messenger the story of Joan of Arc" with Milla Jovovich such an underated film
I've never seen Henry 5, but I watched the Joan of Arc film, it was a long time ago but it didn't really stick out to me. I'll have to rewatch it
@@HistorySpark Henry V is a masterpiece
why did i come here if someone is just gonna recommend braveheart and an egyptian biased movie
What about Joan of arc mila jovovich 😍
I've seen it ages ago but yes also a good film
What Happened to Bastard executioner?!?!?
It got cancelled due to low ratings
I twweted at the maker and Netflix to bring it back. It's a half decent show.
@@HistorySpark Britannia would be on that list. Good show.
Braveheart lol,The Battle of Stirling bridge in Braveheart was a bit wrong with one slight problem, there was no bridge in the movie , writers should read some history as that was the main choke point in the real battle.
love the outlaw king!
Me too, definitely one of the best films I've seen in a while
The Merchant of Venice.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Im pretty sure the King is based on shakespeares plays and not history
Yes I believe u r correct
I’m a fan of medieval movies and found Braveheart annoying on all levels. It’s not so much the historical inaccuracies as the fact that it is the most unoriginal thing ever made. Really boring
That's fair enough and I can see where u r coming from
@@HistorySpark I’m glad you haven’t taken my comment badly. In fact your list is pretty good
Do you have the list in text please
No mention of Name of the Rose, this reviewer has a very limited knowledge of fiim, as others have mentioned, he left out Lion in Winter, and, not to forget Becket, all three of these are far superior to the ones he mentioned.
Those maybe good films for u, my opinion is allowed to be different from urs and I stick by my list
@@HistorySpark The three I mentioned all had stellar casts, and, were much more substansial than just bloody battle scenes. They showed the dynastic struggles, the battles over dogma in the church, and, what happens when the power of the state opposes the power of the church. All of thse are fundamental to an understanding of history. Some of your choices I liked, I just think you list lacked some depth.
2:04 Can it be true that I hold here, in my mortal hand, a nugget of purest Green?
The King was very underwhelming. A big disappointment. Agincourt, the hundred years war and Henry V deserve a much bigger and more epic production.
Haha yea, I do feel like Henry V could do with a better film than The King
The Middle Ages began in 1066. The Dark Ages last from the 5th century A.D. till then. Excalibur is a Dark Ages film.
Cool
Middle ages were from about 500 to about 1500. The dark ages is an outdated term
I was interested in this right up until you mentioned "Braveheart". How could you, it was a travesty of history and film making. "Kingdom of Heaven" I understand there is a directors cut available that fills in the cuts made by the producers in the original cinema release. Consequently it makes far more sense.
Lol yea I know, but it was still a good film with a decent plot and good battle scenes. The historical inaccuracies in the film are soo ridiculous it almost adds a comedic effect to the film
As a Scotsman….I’d just like to say..Braveheart is fucking awesome 💙💙🏴🏴
Black Death is awesome.
Yea, poor sean bean tho lol
Just Fyi, as i have understood "The King" is based on Shakespears story which is inspired by the real King Henry.
That is the reason its not historicly accurate, because the source material isnt.
Ah fair enough I didnt know that, thanks for the info
I just wanna see if you know what Plethora of films means. And if you are the kind of person that would tell someone that there is a Plethora of films without knowing what Plethora means
KnightFall is a great show on netflix as well
Yes it is, I've recommended it in some of my lists
Whats the best version for ARN THE JNIGHT TEMPLAR
Watch it where Arn is split into 2 seperate movies rather than the one where its 2 movies squished into 1
Braveheart is not loved by everyone who sees it.
Still making Mel Gibson a lot of money in royalties I would assume even to this day
Whenever you said Ronchester for the first movie, I remembered a 442oons meme in which Ronaldo named Manchester to Ronchester.
Haha that's cool
Concerning Kingdome of Heaven deffo watch the extend cut it still doesnt make the movie "very good" but the Film will make a lot more sense cause they left out a lot of stuff in the normal cut.
Yes I agree the directors cut is the best version to watch
The messenger? The story of Joan or Ark...
Awesome movie not on your list
What about Robert the Bruce, the greatest Scottish king 🤴
i didnt really enjoy the film to be honest

The king
Decent film
Thank you for #2 Arn.
Your welcome, have u had a chance to watch it yet?
@@HistorySpark Yes. The story of my viewing it is not as complicated as Arn's tale, but almost. A clip here on RUclips led to seeing another. I remembered seeing a book, so I read them. (Recommend.)
There are versions on RUclips. I prefer the 3 parts, each as long as a movie, all subtitled. It seems like a lot of work, but it is important to see how the knight is a product of two very different parents, his brother, and the monks -- both the bookish abbot and the former knight. His fate is determined by the two catastrophes of his fall as a child and his falling in love as a young man. And that is just Part One. It is highly unlikely that he or his lover survived the other two parts for the twenty year middle; it is very much their story, more than his.
If these get deleted, I will be sad.
Princess Bride!
