You are soo right, a marriage of 18 yrs collapsed in kenya after the wife went to claim she was married brought wedding photos just to be told the pastor was not licenced to Wed them ,This is in kenya,
They had not registered the marriage. They had done the ceremony but not registered the marriage. Some skip the ceremony and just go register the marriage. That is accepted by law that they are married. Include two witnesses.

I am Ghanaian, an Akan from Kwahu in the Eastern Region. Within the Akan traditional and Customary system, I can marry my uncle's son. Actually my big brother is married to our uncle's daughter. What I have noticed is that in recent years, we see ourselves more as the cousins that we are, and so this practice has lost its relevance. But if I see or hear one, I will not be surprised.
