  • Joe goes to a giant auction of old American Motors parts, literature, and memorabilia, all of which belonged to the late Neil Curry, a collector of all things AMC. We're thankful for people like Neil, who did so much to keep the hobby alive!

Nothing screams the 80's more than AMC memorabilia from that era. Love it.

The guy against the half Gremlin is my father in law, Edrie Marquez. He held this auction, not the family. (He purchased most of these items from Neil's widow, and a good amount was his own stockpile.) He did all of this work by himself, single handedly. It was a successful day, and we are all proud of him for his hard work! We appreciate everyone who came out to enjoy a beautiful day and a great auction! 🙂

Excellent to be enthusiastic. A friend of mine drove an old Rambler American wagon to work right up to the mid-90's. Unusual enough to see in the UK, but a GREAT smooth, strong running, reliable car and very solid.

Ah, this was amazing! So much awesome car history there. People get so focused on the mechanics and the cars themselves, and they forget that these cars were a part of something bigger- companies, employees, marketing, the ownership experience, etc. I also have to agree that the Ambassador coupes were fantastic looking cars, easily as good as anything else being made in the late 60s or early 70s (which I consider to be a high point in automotive styling, so it's nothing but a compliment). The sedans as well. It looks like you made it out with some nice relics yourself, but this video can serve as a catalog of it all for the rest of us! That concord poster in particular is really cool. And wooo, thank goodness you're finally sorting the vinyl roof! Your Ambassador deserves only the best.
Also, nice Chevy joke. I laughed.

22:22 - The VAM Lerma. The idea behind it was to create a 5 door luxury car by joining the first 3/4 of a Concord (called American in Mexico) and the last 1/4 of a Spirit (called Rally in Mexico). That particular VAM Lerma was restored in Mexico and presented to a member of the AMO, the current owner.
It's a 1982 VAM Lerma 620, meaning it was the most equipped car of the VAM line. It had a 282 inline 6 (a 258 with bigger bore pistons), AC, power steering and brakes, 3 speed automatic transmission, rear window wiper, Kelsey Hayes aluminium rims, AM/FM radio, luxury trimming and wide bucket seats.
The Lerma was in production only for 2 years: 1981 and 1982. After Renault bought VAM in 1982 (due to the Mexican Economic Crisis), the Lerma was ultimately cancelled.
AMC congratulated VAM for its ingenuity and concept, but didn't consider it for the American market, probably because of the almost artisanal manufacturing process of cutting down 2 cars and welding them together... and maybe the Not Invented Here Syndrome.

Wondering how I got here... I did buy a new '74 Hornet hatchback with A/C in SoCal which turned out to be a very good car. It was a choice between the Hornet and a used Cadillac Eldorado and seeing we could only get 5gal of fuel every other day I chose the Hornet. Econo engines were hard to find and in demand.
    Thanks for the memories...

I miss the my AMC Pacer I paid 50.00 in college and drove it three years and sold it to a lady for 375.00 and she still has it today and now has 475, 000 miles and the 258 straight 6 she said is still going strong. Im still friends with the lady that brought the car back in 2009. She had a new Chevrolet cobalt and she always drove the Pacer she said the AMC was more reliable and she said the Cobalt burned to the ground and collected the insurance money and ran.

    It’s a shame AMC didn’t make it.
There was a deal in the works that would have joined all 4 independents ( incl. Studebaker and Packard). I often wonder what would have been if the deal would have gone through.

Your buddy must have gotten a lemon. The Concord was widely proven to be very solid mechanically, due to the Hornet underpinnings. Nothing advanced means a decreased propensity to break, after all.
