Hi guys! A Canarian here, this video was taken on my island, so I’m taking the chance to talk about the terrible problems mass tourism is causing. We’re currently having a water crisis and the water supply is being cut off in non-touristic areas, last year in some parts of the north, we spent up to two days without water during a heatwave, while the hotels and golf clubs are still using it two fill swimming pools, millions of tourists use it for showering, or watering the grass at the clubs, none of which are available for Canarian people, because we don’t go to those hotels or play golf. Apart from this, private sectors of the hotel industry are trying to build mass complexes in natural reserves, not caring about the law or about the local biodiversity, which is incredibly rich but most of our endemic species are facing extinction as their habitats are being destroyed by the exponential growth of the builded areas (again, not even for Canarian people, as more than 30% are living in extreme poverty). Most of the tourists (not saying it’s your case, but most of them) deliberately destroy our nature by trashing the beaches, use loud and illegal vehicles in reserves (like in El Teide), go out of the hiking trails and destabilize the fragile ecosystems of the areas, or simply do mindless stuff that cost a lot to recover, set bad example for other tourists, and don’t face the consequences of their own actions. The islands are completely collapsed, we genuinely don’t have space or resources to host anymore tourists, expats or online workers; this summer we suffered the worst wildfire in the history of Tenerife and the government cared more about the tourists not having a bad impression rather than extinguishing it and cutting unnecessary water supplies to help the cause. As my final point, the result of so many Europeans coming and buying or renting houses here, is the living cost skyrocketing, more and more people live under the line of poverty each year and more and more Europeans are buying houses none of us can afford, so PLEASE next time, find another place to go on vacation, inform your friends and family about what we’re facing and TALK ABOUT IT, it’s an issue unknown to the global community but more than two million people are being affected by it
