    I’d say, don’t get it. I’ll probably sell my CI Mid soon. Love the board in general, great quality. In terms of performance, it starts working by design from waist high waves and bigger. If its small, then it’s just cruisy, making a turn is a hassle. It’s definitely a perfect board to surf point breaks where you can really take your time to do the turns and work on your flow, can’t really force it unlike the Seaside and Beyond which works totally opposite. Both boards come from a different outline, SS&B from the Quad fish with shortboard feel and CI Mid from an egg. In my opinion, they shouldn’t be compared against each other at all.

      I agree with you in that the mid needs a wave with size and some power. I get confused when I read people recommending it for small waves. I actually only use it when the size gets to nearly head high.

    Should or shouldn't?what we do know is that there are too many boards to chose from.
    But from footage I've watched of others it has good drive and focuses on style and practising drawn out turns which in the long term may really also translate to high performance surfing on shortboard when waves are good.

    I am personally biased against channel islands and would not give them a dollar of my money. They stiff local surfers here in SD on promotions and sponsorships often and make short boards that don't last. However, if you want a new board and just want permission, go for it. The CI mid looks to be high performance compared to most midlengths and will work well in good waves.
    Most money I ever spent on a board was $300 on a donald takayama midlength that I still have and what I would recommend.

    Stiff mid board with bugger-all rocker. For cruising not ripping. All the mids, we need to look at 1/. the rocker, 2/. the tail thickness as it tapers toward the tail from 2/3 up, 3/. is the widest point in the top 1/3 of the board? Well that's a problem unless you are surfing Noosa, Malibu and so-on. Mids have giant litres and more length anyway. You don't need the widest point up under your chest or even higher.

    Okay. These waves are more of a log or fish type of wave and would struggle to give good reviews. I've hopped on the CI Mid (egg) train like most others (slaps forehead). Both in a 7'2 (too much foam) and a 7' (just about right for me) To be honest its like CI sound like they've just invented the spiral vee and the Mid (egg, which they haven't) I've owned and ridden boards exactly like the CI Mid before, all you need is spiral vee, low rocker and a performance tail and you've pretty much got one. It's just good marketing from the CI and Devon Howard for shortboard esq guys to get on the "Midlength" game (= to make money) these boards are in their plenty if you look outside of mainstream surf media and towards other shapers. Theirs not much to review TBH.

    I’d say to check out the Outlier from CJ Nelson designs in the thunderbolt technology. They are remarkable boards in knee to overhead. Or possibly the soon to be released 8’3” parallax. I have the last prototype that CJ rode and I can’t get enough of it. It’s a one board quiver. I haven’t ridden it in the thunderbolt tech yet. Just poly. But I’d say this, as much as I love the feel of a traditional poly board, thunderbolt technology is insane. You could catch a puddle on the parallax. I’ve ridden my 8’3” in ankle to overhead and it shined whatever the conditions. It doesn’t ever feel too big or too small. Which is weird but amazing. Paddles like a long board and turns in a dime. Trims like a sushi knife. Anyways, it’s just my experience and I hope others come to get a chance to ride what CJ has been cooking up. You won’t be disappointed!

    for the waves in this vid I'd stick with something in the 9+' area. I'm in FL and I ride a 7'2" twin fin egg but not when it's that mushy (and mine is a good bit thicker and its EPS) The CI mid looks pretty bladed compared to a more eggy egg or a funshape, so I think it will actually bog in waves similar to the ones in the vid. You seem like a more tail-heavy surfer so I think you will end up fighting to keep that thing off the bottom instead of enjoying extra speed like you think. Look at Devon Howard surfing the MID. He's on waves with some backbone. If he was surfing with you on that day i bet my life savings he'd be on a log. Better off getting a Takayama ITP or something. You can still carve and do full wraps, but you got more of the glide, even when the waves are mush.
    My rationale based on surfing weak waves all the time:
    There are basically two approaches to weak waves that i see people doing here 1) full rails, flat or even slight V bottom and you high-line and do nice big wraps, keeping it cruising and surfing more from the middle of the board or
    2) shorter, wider planing type boards that have more bladed rails.
    You've got to work those boards more and when a flatter section arises, your style will suffer so I stick with #1
    If youre trying to get a board for the good days, then ignore everything I just said

    Id say, get something else. But the flex of any poly mid length will feel better than a soft top or timbertek. Mid seems like a great head high point break board. Rincon. Sounds like you're surfing small waves and developing so id so go with the less sexy waterhog. Thruster set up is easier but the aggressive rocker makes turns fun. Lb in the front, sb in the back

  • @Felix-mr1vs
    @Felix-mr1vs 3 года назад +1

    @Thomye I wouldn't do it. We all know you're more of a shortboard/fish guy and you already have the Seaside & Beyond. Got a short foamie for the shore break/bring-just-in-case-board, got a 7'9 for very weak waves/cheater 5's, all have their place. But honestly if I was you, with limited resources (no free boards for reviews and limited time), I'd rather get a shortboard for the good days, or maybe something a little different, like the Akila Aipa Flat Earth, Lost/MR Cali Twin, Lost Driver 2.0, CI Fishbeard, Neckbeard 2...or my personal recommendation CI Motorboat Too in round pin (old Machado model) as a daily driver. Loved that board! Same goes for the Biscuit. They still make them both when requested :)
    Oh and I haven't got one myself, but I think something like a Mini Simmons would go really well in your standard high tide smaller days. Really want to try one someday. Heard Hydrodynamica makes good ones. XTR also makes them in their construction.

  • @jengbergseq

    I have the Vernor Tree hugger, I think it's more adaptable then the CI mid. Better construction in the EPS with the suspension carbon. It can go Single, 2 + 1, or quad. I really like it with a single fin or single fin with smaller side bites. It's goes better as a quad in mushy smaller surf, but I think a groveler is better in that stuff. The Tree hugger gets into waves super easy and I like surfing it if there is lots of paddling required or I want to get in early on head high or bigger surf.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      i like that it has 5 fin boxes giving you more options. Not sure why the CI Mid didn't give you that option. Unless they know something we don't, like it is a terrible quad which I can't imagine. Anyways, thanks for the feedback. I'll look at the Tree Hugger.

    Works amazing in waves from chest high up to double over head. Not good for under that as it isn't a groveller. Best in lined up point breaks...but so are most boards.... get a local shaper to do you their take on it if you're worried about money.Plus I think it's a board you should go to if you're a competent surfer as there are better boards out there suited to average ability surfers in poor conditions

    Currently own a 6'10" CI mid and getting used to it e.g. not trying to ride it like a shortboard, fin placement etc. This is definitely a high performance mid but you can still cruise if you want to. I'd highly recommend getting the CI/True Ames 2+1 set if you buy one to unleash the full potential of the board. As per the comments below, the CI Mid would be perfect for long point breaks but can also handle beach breaks with a bit of face to work with - who enjoys surfing close-outs anyway :-) If you haven't already, have a look at videos of Devon Howard, Cliff Kapono, Mikey February etc. on youtube plus Assorted Rides on Vimeo. I haven't regretted buying mine as it's built to last, much easier to catch waves, smooths out your style and I'm enjoying my surfing again.

    I would say don’t I’ve heard it’s a good board but since you already have a Timbertek mid length and a seaside and beyond it seems like you already have the mid length area of your quiver decently fleshed out. If your set on buying another maybe go to a local shaper and ask for something like the CI mid. They aren’t exactly tiny shapers but I’ve heard good things about almond surfboards in Newport and album surfboards in San Clemente. There’s also so many small shapers that could make a board just as good if not better for a cheaper price. Honestly though if I were you since you are already willing to spend that money why not get another type of board to mix it up a little bit. Fishes are really fast and are good for 80 percent of the days here in SoCal. I’ve heard good things about mini Simmons type boards too. Up to you in the end but that’s my 2 cents

The S&B is like a mid that pulls attributes from a fish. it has great forward drive and pivots but the turns feel angular. The tails says it all. The CI Mid is a mid that pulls it's attributes from a longboard. it flows and cruises well. has nice long drawn out turns. I didn't get to experience that on the small waves the rail to rail flow was super nice. I would do it. haha Not to be an instigator but I can't foresee you regretting it. I’m curious to see your review of it, but I’m personally leery of an old school mid length. There’s a reason the 7’ surfboard era passed so quickly. They’re too long to pump speed and too short to glide. Any board looks good in Devin Howard in perfect head high waves, but I suspect it will be a dog performance wise.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      yeah, i'm of the mindset that it too long to short board and too short to longboard. I do however want to try it only if the rails are modern and the bottom contours are also modern. the one thing that does puzzle me is why did Britt say that they want to build performance into everything and then only set it up as a single fin with side bites. why wouldn't one put in a quad option especially for that tail. Anyways, getting very close to a decision.

    I agree with what others have said, I think getting something different would be cool for you. Your surfing is great and love to see you on more of an odd shape shortboards, such as twin fin, etc than the CI mid. However, it would be also cool to hear your comparison thoughts of the SS&B and the CI mid. I have 6' 8" SS&B and 6'10" single-fin, CC Huntsman. After figuring out the fin, amongst other aspects for the Huntsman, and though it doesn't have the performance of the SS&B, I love the feel of the Huntsman and tend to surf it more. I also like it punchier beach breaks.

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk 3 года назад +1

    Yeah same for me I really like these and the seaside abs beyond too. I have a 7' mid I made myself along with a great one form a local shaper. Viewing the CI mid online I like the way it looks with good mid Riders riding it. On paper I thought it was not quite wide enough and a hit low on volume. Checking it out in the store it actually looks really good. I would probably go 7'0" in this board maybe 6'10". I know I can still semi duck dive these sizes uoto about 50 litres. )We have a soft wave so getting deep isn't an issue). One sticking point on the ci is it's only a 2+1 I have bought the ci fins and not sure if they work for my mid so still thinking that the CI mid itself ridden as it's supposed to be with those fins could be great for me. Getting the mid length recipe right is one of the harder things to do as a shaper or a surfer. One think you need to know about the ci is it's a vee/vee double throughout the entire board so it will surf differently from a full concave bottom. I have surfed boards like that with bottom contours like this and they work fine for me. The rob Machado creeper had this year's back that topped out at 6"6" I think but would have made a fantastic 7' single fin / 2+1 mid. I also like the seaxe but haven't owned one. They are a lot more refined in the two and more modern bottom. Be really interested to see how this goes for you. The guy that had the seaside and beyond and this made some good comparisons. I think it could be a fantastic mid length as most things CI do they generally do well and they usually have solid performance built in. Be interesting to see how you go. They certainly sell well so resale would be easy worst case. The ones here have sold out first week in store every time. Cheers for your work on the reviews 👍🤙

Think of all the stupid stuff you can blow money on. If your surfing as much as you do then go for it. I have a Seaside, Chumlee, and a some mid lengths and a prog longboard but I’ve found I always have better fun on the seaside and chumlee regardless of conditions and crowds. I only take the mid lengths out if it’s getting bigger and I just want to get in earlier and go down the line. They always feel so boring compared with the lively feel of the seaside etc. I’m of the opinion that either a short board-or a longboard are more fun than the mids. Anyway. dang, that's a hard question. but I have an answer but before I answer, I like Newport too, Blackies, lower jetties, 56, etc.
      Bolsa for these reason:
      1) The waves aren't as good as say HB Pier, but I find it better than most other parts of HB. Obviously, GW and Brooks is good but it is also way more crowded.
      2) The people are way more mellow and I rarely feel like someone is purposely dropping in on me to drop in on me. It does happen but not in a malicious way where I feel any type of wave rage.
      3) Most of my friends surf Bolsa
      4) If you surf late morning, say 10:30, it is surprisingly uncrowded. Newport and HB are crowded all the time.
      5) Closest when pressed for time.
      6) Wave now fits my quiver, or my quiver was selected because of the waves. something like that. :)

    I don't think you surf that style at all. Look at this Devon Howard video: ruclips.net/video/bXgb5iCoveY/видео.html
    1. Do you surf a long peeling point break or reef? 2. Do you like a cruisy positional type of style? I think the answer is no to both of those questions.
    I think a lot of people who buy the CI Mid are going to be disappointed in how it surfs in beach break. I have a speed egg. It does not do well on one turn beach break closeouts. It likes to surf "slow" and vertical. If you're open to surfing it around Trestles then, maybe get a 6'10 for a guy your size. If you want to get it to boost your channel, I totally get that and that in itself is a good enough reason.

    I like the poetry of the single fin CI Mid, but in reality I never use mid-size boards. Either I want a bit more foam and step up to a real longboard or I want a bit more performance and I'm surfing Seaside or Rocket Wide. In practice, for me mid length boards seem like a bad compromise as can't duck dive them well and still not enough foam to compete to the longboarders up here in norcal. If you're feeling like a fun higher foam board I'd love to see a review on the Skindog Peacemaker ruclips.net/video/XZc5gtlF5Kk/видео.html but I'm guessing that longboard reviews are out of question

      Other review I'd be interested in is what is a good step up shortboard? Hydronaut? Black Beauty or Taco Grinder? I don't need them often, but there have been some days this winter I wished I'd had one.

      that board looks pretty cool. It's not that I have any objections to reviewing longboards, it's more that I think I would be terrible at reviewing them. First, I don't know how to really surf a longboard and second, I wouldn't know if it was good or bad. haha
      It's my only hesitation with longboards. Oh, and they are expensive. :(

      @@ThomyeSurfs Some other reviews I'd love to see from you:
      - Seaside, I think it is one of your favorite boards but haven't seen a review yet
      - Other boards like the Seaside designed to work in less than perfect surf like Rocket Wide or Fishbeard.
      - Other surfing gear like fins, racks, or even the "DryGuy 2207 Force Dry Boot Dryer" which really improved the smell of my booties
      - Wetsuits, I think a lot of surfers struggle with poor fitting wetsuits as there is a surprising variation in cuts
      - Favorite surf videos and surfers.

    Don’t, get a Harley Ingleby Moe instead, way more fun and performance.
