  • Channel Islands CI Mid - WOOLY TV #35 - Surfboard Review
    Wooly is back and the froth is real! 6 months has been a long time healing the knee but he is back ready to go and this is one of the first surfs back so you will have to excuse the first surf in the right hander! :) But I did get it going better after a few surfs under my belt and found a nice fat left point break to play on.
    Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1"/187cm tall
    Wooly is riding a 7'0" x 21 1/8" x 2 3/4" - 44.90L
    From Channel Islands
    The CI Mid is a modern classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and refining this genre.
    Inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins, the CI Mid infuses that vibe with the crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by modern features synonymous with Merrick design principles.
    Boasting a moderate mid length template with low entry rocker and foam forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, graduated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.

      I’m not so sure I’m great on a mid compared to guys like Harley Ingelby, Devon Howard or the like but I do have a lot of fun ridding them! 🤙

    I have a 6'10". Pretty much agree with your assessment. The Mid does not work well in small waves for me, as well. Chest to overhead is when it truly shines. Definitely keeping this board for those days.

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  Год назад

      Yeah I much prefer it in the bigger wonky surf 🤙

    • @SurferKroky
      @SurferKroky Год назад

      In what way does it not work in small waves ? Surely it paddles into waves you wouldn’t normally catch in a shortboard and glides through dead spots waaay better ? Obviously it’s not gonna fit in the pocket. But for cruising on crappy weak waves it’s good no ?
      I want something that will catch waves when my 5”6 shortboard just can’t get going and then be epic for solid reef /point breaks too.

    • @takeroshinoda5897
      @takeroshinoda5897 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@SurferKroky Yes, compared to a shortboard, the mid will take off easily in the small stuff, but for me it feels like the board is stuck in 3rd/4th gear, once I'm up and riding. I just can't seem to click with it when it's waste high and smaller. Where I live the waves are on the mushier side when it's small. That could be a factor.

    Surprised you like the fin way back. Most videos of this board show the user has the centre fin just behind the side bites.
    I agree re wave size. It is not a groveller. It needs some push. Thanks for the video.

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  Год назад

      Yeah I seem to like fins further back in most mids. I’m pretty tall so I do have quite a lot of leverage.

    • @jeffn1384
      @jeffn1384 Год назад +1

      Another question.... You said you used a 7" fin. Did you intentionally not use the CI 6.5" fin developed for the board? If so why did you do that. Or did you have no choice but to improvise?
      I am because I don't have the CI centre and have been trying this and that to see what works.

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  Год назад +2

      @@jeffn1384 I just used what I had in my fin library 😂.

    • @timnz009
      @timnz009 6 месяцев назад

      I can see he has trouble pushing the tail round in the small waves.. it would probably be more lively with a normal thruster center fin if you want to pump it.. or at least a more flexy 6.5" center, if you want to keep the drive. Great surfing on the CI mid on your backside... first video I've seen...

    What are your thoughts on single fin only for this board?

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  Год назад +2

      I rode it once with the 7” single but I preferred it with the side bites. I would probably go a little bigger if I was just going to use the single only - maybe 7.5” or 8”.
      But I’m really a thruster guy 😂

  • @jsnmrtn
    @jsnmrtn Год назад +1

    Did you prefer this or the big baron?

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  Год назад +1

      Very different boards. The BIg Baron is much looser and easier to throw around whereas the CI mid is more of a old school cruiser. Big difference comparing a twin to a single fin feel.

    Haven't gone back to my shorty since. No reason. Turns just as good but catched more waves and is more stable. Masses of people are compromising There surfing by sinking on their 5'8. It's rediculous bro.
