How We Used A Hook To Rappel In Woody Canyon

- Portion of our Woody Canyon Adventure. One of the rappels in the canyon require some funky anchoring technique. One option is to hook the rappel. It has a great hook placement location - there is also a sandtrap option available here as well. This demonstrates our groups movement through this section of Woody Slot Canyon where we opted for the Black Diamond Grappling Hook as our anchor option. It was a good practice session for members of our group who have not yet used a hook in a canyon yet.
CAUTION: Using hooks in canyons can be dangerous and offer much more risk factors than other anchoring techniques. You take yours and your groups safety into your own hands when choosing to use these alternative anchoring techniques. Not every canyon or every drop lends themselves to these alternative techniques. You need to learn, train and understand the many different variables at play in the use of these techniques.

Great video. Very informative!
Thanks for watching.
Just did this rap this weekend! So excellent. The hook anchor felt a lot more secure than I was expecting...
Yeah, the whole thought of it kinda shakes your nerves, but it really is a pretty bomber placement and works out super well. Glad you were able to use it effectively.
What hook/style did you use?
Nice, thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for checking it out.
Great video, sir. Like the meat back up. Last man has something to think about...
Yes, definitely. Gotta take it careful as LAMAR.
Ever since watching this, I get ads on Facebook for grappling hooks.
Haha - Big Brother is always watching. Looking for opportunities to sell us something.
Just did this canyon last month. Not much to anchor from. I pretty much dead manned everyone then down climbed or jumped. Good info.
That's a rough one to down climb - I haven't even wanted to try that one. Glad you made it through. That drop is also a good one to use a Sand Trap on as well, it's got some good lippage off the back end of the sandy area on top to put a Sand Trap. Thanks for watching, hope we gave you some ideas for another trip. We've started carrying a hook a lot more for emergency situations where we just need some extra security.
Seems insane
+D Mertz Off the cuff, yes it’s nutz! In Canyoneering we use a lot of sketchy anchor systems to make it through a canyon. Some crazier than others. The hook is kinda in the middle zone between crazy and normal 😊
Awesome! I was actually looking for a good hook, figure-8 loop combo... any suggestions? I mostly rappel solo...
What size is that hook? What would be the best size to carry for that application ?
There are several different hooks. The in I’ve had the most use with is the grappling hook size. That’s the one used in this application here.
If that sky hook comes lose he’s yanking his buddy off of that ledge. Extremely unsafe.
Yup, it could be quite the jolt. The back up should always be set in a solid position.
You can take a hook through a 1,000 canyons and use it one time.
Yup, but you are glad you have it that 1 time you need it. Kinda like a fiddlesticks. I carry it way more than I use it.
I’m Curious… Did you leave a group of noobs at the top with no hook rappelling experience?
I had to go back and re-watch the video again to make sure I didn't. I can see how it looks like I left all noobies up there.
Jeff (last man down / Meat Anchor) has done plenty of hooks with me and I had no issue leaving him behind on this one. The other two were new to the hooks.
