Ep 28: Single-handed from the Caribbean to the USA

- The passage from the Caribbean to Florida is considered easy in April and the weather is said to be quite good. However, a lot is different on this cruise. Byside the wonderful sailing moments, the weather is often unsettled. Many squalls come and go, especially at night. I can barely escape a thunderstorm.
I have good luck fishing. The new equipment with a larger drum, stronger line and larger bait has proven its worth. I can catch three mahi mahi in a few days and of course there is a lot of fish to eat.
Finally, I ride through the Straits of Florida in a force 7 northeast wind. The conditions here are borderline for my Jambo due to the strong Gulf Stream, which is against wind and waves, but of course we made it.
After 1124 nm and 8 days, the anchor drops in Lake Sylvia, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Enjoy the video!

Just read on the German news that Mjambo sank and Martin was rescued on the Atlantic Ocean.
Dear Martin, just read that Jambo sunk near Brazil , but got saved by a Frighter. I wish you all the best and hope that you are fine.
Learned today that Martin's yacht sank between Brazil and Africa. He had to go to the life raft - help is on the way. Hope all goes well.....
He is saved, a freighter has taken him on board 👍
I'm glad he's okay. I just got the news.
Yes he is on the Alanis. He is 👌
Just saw it in the german "yellowpress" too... so he reefed the main at 30 knots for the night, then left Jambo with enough water and power banks, after 20 hours in the life raft he was saved by Alanis a 138 Meter vessel...
@@Carsten-Berlin-Wiwow - this will be an interesting story to listen to 🍀
Mensch Martin.
R.I.P. Jambo

Funny thing is that at 6:22 it's the boat of Aurimas Valujavičius that was solo rowing across the Atlantic
Yes, I found out afterwards 👍😀⛵️
I'm only starting to catch up now on Jambo adventures (I know what happens), and when I saw the boat the first thing I thought of was Aruminas...
Greetings from from Lithuania 🇱🇹!
Lituanica’s passenger safely arrived to Miami🇺🇸
Enjoy your trips 🌊🚤
He is our hero!
Same as you 🙌
He must be a great person. Thank you and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
We really appreciate your style of videography--a good combination of narrative and just video. This was a great trip, Martin, you had a wide variety of conditions, thank you for taking us along virtually!
Thank you very much and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Love you recovered, rebuilt…..and are once again back out on the ocean allowing me to enjoy your amazing content. Appreciate the effort it must be.
Thanks a lot 😀⛵️⛵️
With everything that you have done to Jambo, it can no longer be called a Bavaria 34 “Holiday”. It is in fact now a Bavaria 34 “Expedition.”
Very true! Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Das Plastikding ist abgesoffen.....
I wish you a safe and hopefully fast rescue!!
Hi Martin. I just heard the news of your rescue. Thank God you are safe. 🙏👍🍻
Glad to hear Martin ok! Thank God!
Excellent. The row across the Atlantic boat looked totally abandoned. Glad the guy was just on some down time. Thanks agin for making the two language versions!
Thank you very much and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
The story you will tell will be epic.
We (my wife 👩 and myself) just heard about your disaster. I hope and pray that everything is well. All the best, love and a heartfelt Servus from Bavarian landlubbers.
So pleased you were saved also so sorry you have lost your home 😢
Thank you for sharing 🎉
My pleasure 😀⛵️⛵️
Hope you are safe and well Martin.
Again love your videos you are what I dream to be.❤
Thank you 😀⛵️
Always a good vibe, and great video, well done Martin
Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Glad to enjoy your passages again. You definitely have the technology 😊
Yes, well equipped 👍😀⛵️
Martin, I am so sorry to hear about Jambo. I hope your spirits are improving and insurance is helping with your loss. Please don’t hesitate to set up a gofundme page if there are troubles in that regard. Tom
Good effort, Martin. Well done.
Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Was für ein Glück.

A really great video and trip and many thanks. As my dear late father would have said those following seas were somewhat ‘ Lumpy!’
Safe sailing and looking fwd to your next film.
Thank you very much and fair winds 😀⛵️⛵️
Langer sonst meist stiller Zuschauer hier.
Congratulations Martin, that was a great job. Cheers from Buenos Aires ;)
Thank you very much and best regards to. Buenos Aires 😀⛵️⛵️
Great passage Martin. The last 40 miles seemd like 400. In the last shots of the heavy seas you can spot the highrise buildings already. Its crazy how long that last stage yakes once you finally see land. Very good presentation of the conditions.
Thank you very much 😀⛵️⛵️
Great video! Wow those waves through the Gulf Stream were gigantic and the rough weather that greeted you at lake sylvia 😮 looks like hurricane conditions
Fortunately, it has gone well! Thank you and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Great job Mate.
Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Alternative names for your downwind sail set ……wing on wing, and goose winged. Thanks for great videos. Capt John
Thank you and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Thanks a lot for sharing another episode of your adventures! Could you elaborate on your fishing experiences in one of your oncoming videos, what works best for you, e.g. in terms of bait, killing method, etc..? Keep up the good vibes, bon voyage & all the best to Horta!
Thank you very much! I had bad luck with fishing during the sail to the Azores. I am not an fishing expert but need the luck. Best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
The wave height crossing the Gulf Stream with winds from the north were absolutely the largest I’ve seen in recent RUclips sailing videography!
It was a bit scary 😀⛵️⛵️
Having sailed this area several times also with rough conditions, I'm very impressed that you did it solo while shooting great video shots. Bravo, Martin! I am curious about your autopilot, the brand and the type of drive (linear or hydraulic). Stay safe and enjoy the U.S!
Thank you very much and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
awesome...
Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Greetings from Lithuania. Aurimas shared your video where you found his boat :)
That’s cool! Thank you and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Top 💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍
😀⛵️⛵️
Friede sei mit dir, Martin. Wann machst du einen neuen Film? Ich warte auf dich. Ich liebe deine Abenteuer. Danke
Hi Martin,
I was waiting for this video..
Let me know if you are planning to come up to the Chesapeake Bay.
Great video…..!!
Thank you! We were in the Chesapeake Bay in June, great time. I ha already left New York and have arrived in the Azores. Best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Oh too bad.
WHERE did you stop while in the Chesapeake?
are you back to Germany?
You would think that the Gulf Stream would help you, but from living in Florida for many years and watching the sailing channels on RUclips most people sail inside or outside the Gulf Stream I've seen some rough conditions in the Gulf Stream. Good luck to you Martin, stay safe.
Thank you! I had no choice as I crossed it. Best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Great video Martin! One of your best so far, I really enjoyed it.
Just a question for a minor detail - The way you store the dingy on deck, does it block your passage on the port side?
The way I store my dinghy is not perfect, but I can pass it both sides. Thank you very much 😀⛵️⛵️
Hey man very cool! Loved your Email to Aurimas :D, Subscribing to your channel, Best of luck bro!
Thank you, Bro, and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Near Fernando de Noronha in Brasil rescue Jambo... crash problable in container 🇧🇷
Danke
Gerne 😀⛵️⛵️
@6:00 you found Lithuania Treasure :D
Yes, very cool 😀⛵️⛵️
Tolles Video.
Could you please provide some more info about your experience with your hydro generator? I keep hearing about poor efficiency when boat speed is low. So it would be interesting to know how well such a device work with the hull speed of a 34 ft boat. Thanks
It makes sense on my boat when STW is higher than 5.5 kn, giving me around 5 A, with speed 6 - 6.5 kn it makes around 9 A. 😀⛵️⛵️
Thank you so much for your prompt and positive response
But! What happened between “I hope can make it” and “I made it”? 🙂
I guess you were too busy navigating to video your landfall.
Thanks for the vids. Very nice.
My GoPro let me down. I was so upset. Thank you and best regards 😀⛵️⛵️
Hallo Martin
Hast du schon ein neues Boot?
Ja, eine Amel Mango 😀⛵⛵
Are you in NY yet?

This Bavaria is much too light for such trips. First the mast was broken and now probably the keel? Why are people take this kind of risks and they have to be saved by other people and risc their life?
"This Bavaria is much too light for such trips. ", ... nope, I don't think so, it's rather a lack of preparation of the boat for such expected stress, I'm afraid ...
"... and now probably the keel?", ... source ?
"Why are people take this kind of risks and they have to be saved by other people and risc their life?", well, ... let me write it like this, ... if your opinion had always prevailed, "we" would still be living in trees and scratch our lunch with small sticks out of branchholes ...
@@paulpaulsen7309 I had a Bavaria myself and I know all in and outs. I am a long time seasailor (with a Koopmans, very reliable ship) but a Bavaria like this is too light for this kind of trips (mast was also broken). Yes you have to take risks but this ship you could expect big problems (Google also om keel-broken problems).
@@yourob Martin was sailing 70° upwind through 20 knots of wind and waves of about 3m, when the boat had a collision with something beneath the surface. The alarm of the auto-pilot rang as the rudder wasn't reacting to the steering anymore, so Martin initially thought about a technical defect and wanted to check the installation in the aft. Soon he realized that water was leaking into the ship, so he started the bilge pump and turned on a second spare pump and was about to look for the third one in the cockpit locker. When he saw that the water was still rising rapidly, despite of two running pumps, he initiated his life raft, grapped some water, his communication devices, some clothes and food and entered the raft within 15 min after the collision. While Jambo was sinking forward over the bow, the stern went out of the water, which slowed down the sinking process tremendously, as he could see its masts for quite a while, an indication that the leakage might heve been in the aft, eventually caused by a broken rudder. Martin didn't see anything unusual before and after, yet he was downstairs when the incident happened. Maybe Jambo collided with a sealed container, that went overboard and was floating beneath the surface. Now Martin is looking for more robust yachts and never wants to sail again on a boat with an unprotected (spade) rudder, as 50% of the modern sailing-yachts have. And he will take a life-suit with him that keeps him warm at night, even on wet surfaces, like in a life raft.
You are my favorito sailing channel, please get another boat. Happy you are ok.
