On exactly the same day you lost your mast, a key fitting on my spinnaker broke off the mast, forcing me to cross the Atlantic in the trade winds with no spinnaker. I was feeling sorry for myself. I see now that I was fortunate. Things could have been much worse. You handled it like a pro Martin. Hope all is repaired by now.

700 miles from New-York City towards the Azores, my backstay broke while in a storm on June 22nd. Thankfully the mast stood up and I rigged a temporary backstay using a spare halyard. Nevertheless I had to turn around and slowly sail with 3reefs in the main sail towards Halifax. My goal of reaching the Azores shall wait just like you. I hope everything turns out well for you. Martin, This is the first video of yours that I've seen. I am amazed at how calm and rational you are during such a crisis. Your priorities are in the right place. Nobody was injured and the mast can be replaced and the other repairs necessary can be done, with some expense. I'm a motor-boater, not a sailor, but I hope that if there is ever an emergency I can remain composed and level-headed as you were here. So glad you are safe Martin. It is good for all sailors to see this video as a reminder of what can happen. It is the first video I have seen that shows a demasting. So good that you took the numbers of the mast to replace it and that you managed to get your autohelm working and rig up an aerial.

So sorry that you lost Jambos mast, but it is great that you are ok and not injured. You had some good luck that the mast did not break something in the hull. I would be grateful to hear what went wrong with the mast to learn and fix issues. Hope that Jambo has a new mast allready.
Thank you! Unfortunately, the root cause remains unclear, as the mast would have been examined, which is now on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The surveyor, who was on board, did not come to a better conclusion, too. The rigg is just 3 years old. Hence, we can only speculate. It could be that a starboard shroud broke or ripped out of its socket, or the mast attachment gave up. Since the mast was still well supported by the lower shrouds, it broke off in the middle, only to collapse completely shortly afterwards. But as I said, that's just a guess. 😀⛵⛵
