  • MPGomatic puts a 2013 Dodge Dart Rallye to a grueling mid-winter test drive. We tested a Header Orange Dart Rallye, equipped with the dry-dual-clutch automatic transmission (DDCT) and turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir engine. The little turbo inline-four is lifted from the Fiat Abarth abd rated at 160 horsepower (HP) and 184 foot pounds of torque.
0-60 MPH test completed with Traction Control off.
Options include uConnect media system. Bonus footage includes Bluetooth pairing.

The 1.4 Fiat engines never had any issues,i can almost give my word on reliability. Probably one of the best 1.4 Engines in Europe with the worst being the VW 1.4 TSI Twincharged 180HP which burns oil like it's gas and has issues from piston blowing to running rough under acceleration randomly.

Thanks for the kind words and support! There are many beautiful parts of NJ. Expensive to live here, though ... taxes are crazy high. These reviews are a labor of love, but I'm going broke. Fingers crossed the new series will get things back on level ground.

Yes it is easier said than done, because those engines just sound so damned good.

Thanks for the kind words, Bricktamland1681! We always test with whatever fuel is specified by the manufacturer for the vehicle. The Dart's turbo is designed to run on premium. (We provide details on tank size and fuel type in the written reviews on the MPGomatic website.)
OEM MPG meters are relatively accurate these days, although there's always some variation. This will vary from car to car. Aftermarket MPG meters can be calibrated for accuracy over the course of a number of tank fills.

FINALLY someone breaks down how to use the Uconnect system. It's always looked like such a cool system, but theres like no videos on youtube breaking down it's features/how to use it. Thank you!

For some reason I like FCA’s current turbocharged engines especially their 2.0 turbo in the Alfa’s and other care the turbo sounds so cool in the inside

Billy - It certainly feels different than a conventional automatic, but it's not as snappy as the Mitsubishi SST or VW DSG. I know it bugs some folks, but it didn't bug me. :) If you head over to the Allpar website there's an excellent review that goes in-depth with the DDCT.

Exactly! We all win when the automakers are competing hard against each other. I've been asking for a Focus ST for eons, but word is that they won't be in the media fleet until some point this Spring (which is not far away now). I'm looking forward to that one, as well as the Fiesta ST. I'll keep knocking on the door. :) Thanks for the kind words!

  • @mpgomatic
    @mpgomatic  11 лет назад

The Dart is a great first year effort. The Focus is more refined right now and the ST takes it up more than a notch. That said, I'd be happy with either one in my driveway.

Great review, and let me tell you, stationed in Italy that Abarth engine is amazing. I have the limited Dart with the 1.4 and it performs very nicely.

They are, probably not for a few years though. Ralph Gilles (head of SRT) said that they are working on it to make it a much more thought out car than previous SRT-4s

I don't like the interrupt storage of the ST and that it's in its first year. It seems like a great car. Just needs to prove reliable now. Its also hard to find a base one and the next level cost around $28K. Its drive smooth with almost no turbo lag.

I enjoyed your review. There have been some very negative reviews on the engine and transmission performance. You, however, have looked at this car as a whole, and given it good marks.
I like this car and think Chrysler has done a great job in bringing back the Dart. As you said, they will only get better.

Thanks! I have a ford focus hatchback se and while this car appears very nice I am glad I bought my focus. Maybe if they had made a dart hatchback my mind would've wandered a bit....but I am glad manufacturers are making competitive cars these days. It is a win for the consumer in the end. But on a side note I love the videos! Your in depth testing is great. Any plans for a focus st anytime soon? Maybe a fiesta st when it is released?

The knock and premium will be based on the engine efficencies and other things. These newer engines can run good on 87 but like you said somewhat better with premium.

Except for Hyundai/Kia -- most turbos including the Multiair turbo will prefer the good stuff (a.k.a. Premium gas) due to the fact it needs high octane gas to prevent knock. Subaru, VW, and Nissan (with the turbo I-4 in the Juke and also with their V6 in the Altima and Maxima) have that requirement.

It won't be for a while though, some sources are saying late 2014 and others are saying 2016.

I haven't done a Civic Si video. I've driven the car, but only for half an hour or so. It would probably be an easier car to live with on a daily basis. The Speed3 is more of a commitment. I take it that you've driven both? How about the Focus ST?

  • @waclosh

It is strange to read about 93 octane as being the premium gasoline. In Europe, we have 95 as standard, 91 as a very obsolete kind of fuel and 98 octane for the turbos (and most direct injected n/a engines). I wonder how the car manufacturers face this difference and how it translates to dyno figures.

MPGomatic. Can you please answer a question? I'm debating between a 2013 mazdaspeed3 and 2013 Civic SI. I love the SI's interior and smooth reliable engine/transmission. The Speed3 is awesome and I wouldn't have really put much money into it. It will be my main car I drive about 50 miles/day for work. Thank you very much. Do you a Civic SI video?

I'm not looking for trouble when I say this, but I read the engine isnt all that reliable. Can you tell me a little about the engine? Also supposedly the car is an "Alfa Romeo Guilietta" and that car doesnt have a good reliability record. Please do not get me wrong. I like the car and have hopes of it lasting 250,00....and more.

Dan -- how is the dual clutch transmission on this Dart? I know nobody likes the fact that 1.4L turbo prefers the good stuff (91+ octane fuel), but it prevents engine knock.
