Just got a 2004 avalanche for $4700- its my first car. And at first, I had no idea this existed, and I didn't know that you could open up the side of the bed and reveal a toolbox sort of compartment. It really is a neat truck- and a slick one too!
Robot Dib runs along another tube arm. Robot Dib makes a huge leap and grunts as he grabs onto an opening in the wall. After he pulls himself up, he sees Gaz standing there, growling.
Yes! This video doesn't show it but yes it was designed to open without the window being removed as well. All you do in that case is flip the rear seats forward as shown (always make sure the front seats are slid forward a bit so there's room to do this without binding), and turn that handle in the center. The midgate will drop without the glass, and that top bar that makes up a portion of the midgate will stay attached with the glass, and continue to keep it all watertight.
Nice video. I own an LT and love it. I removed the roof rack cross bars because I could hear wind resistance. I never plan to use them anyway. I'm actually getting improved gas mileage by removing them.
ya, great feature. Came in handy so many times when buying lumber. Can push those 16 footers right up to the windshield and only sticks out the tailgate like a foot.Even other things can slide right up and close the tailgate shut
This is one of those features that should have carried over to other vehicles. Typically drab, GM was inovated when they weren't making outmeal on wheels. See Aztec
Tons of places, just Google "Avalanche tent" and check out all the distributors. There are even air mattresses that are made to fit exactly in the bed.
oooh i see. but i think the mechanism you pointed out is in the two swivel latches that lock the window into place in the mid gate, rather than the ones that hold it while it is up (normal position). Thanks a lot for the reply!
People yes you can leave the window on. You see were he turns the knob type latches that will hold the mirror when is off on each side that is actually to unlock or lock the mid section support beam for the window.
Owning one I can answer this. The overall length of a four seat long bed is way too long for most people on the road. My Avalanche is only ~220 inches long. The Crew Cab truck is ~230. ALSO, you cannot buy a long bed crew cab (at least now.) But if you could, it would be a very, very long truck. My Av steers better than my Flex, which is my DD, because it is a relatively short vehicle. And when I need it, it is a long-bed. Still pointless?
Mechanism when the windows is released unlocks it. I could say it is F'n magic but no, its just a good invention (as an owner's opinion.) So when you put the window in its proper spot, the latches change to open with the bar.
i have a question on how it works. There's a piece, a bar, between the window and the midgate that flips down. How does it know when to lower with the midgate when the window is taken down compared to the window staying up, and it stays up too? i probably made it confusing but any help?
Your wish is granted because the Avalanche can open the midgate and extend the cargo bed with the rear window in place if desired, it works either way, window in or out. I know because I have a 2002 Avalanche, the first year they were made.
@@RevolutioXxNx Another thing: You know how sometimes with car doors if you don't slam them shut hard enough they aren't fully latched? The Avalanche midgate is like that too. If you don't close it firmly enough it will look like it's closed but it is not latched fully tight. The latches have 2 clicks, same as a lot of car doors do. So if you don't slam it all the way then it will be only on the first click but not closed tight. To make sure the midgate is fully latched, get inside the middle of the truck and spread your hands out wide when you slam it shut to put even pressure on both of the latches. If you stand outside the truck and reach in to close the midgate it might not be fully latched on the side away from you, so if you have to close it that way then walk around to the other side and look at the latch to see if it is fully tight. If you look close at the latches on each side you can see the difference. If they are only half latched, there will be a slight gap, maybe a 16th of an inch. You can sock it with the palm of your hand to click it in tight. There are a total of 4 latches on the midgate. 2 at the outside ends of the top bar that holds the glass, and 2 at the top of the midgate that latch into the top bar. All 4 of these latches are double click, so it pays to make sure they are all fully clicked tight if you want to be sure everything is sealed when you close it up.
I love the concept of the midgate, but I don’t like the idea of not being able to have the glass up while it’s transformed. I heard they leaked a lot, so they only produced this for a couple years?
buzzj89 so, I’m going to install a 2x12 speaker cab and would like to leave the window in but, fold down the mid gate. This is possible? Guess I could go outside & see with mine. LOL
Any 2007 Avy owners want to spill the beans on there oil consumption issues..really want a beautiful '07 that's for sale right now (198,000 kms), but the whole PCV/oil eating engine has me frozen on such a purchase..
seven dyseven I owned a 2007 Sierra that had the same problem. The issue is with the fuel conservation system. It essentially shuts one cylinder off to save on fuel then turns it back on when additional power is needed, during this transition the oil is burned off. There is a repair for the issue, some type of plate or something to redirect the lost oil. I'm not a mechanic so this isn't the most spot on description, but hopefully it kind of gives you an idea of what the issue is. This is more or less what I found after lots of research. You save on fuel so you can afford more oil lol. I had to actually put a quart a month into my Sierra.
I didn't get the repair done, I've read that it does work, but if the problem had existed for too long or done any further damage to seals or anything it wouldn't work.
The avalnche is cool truck.. but that midgate is a Pain in the Ass.. in my opinon. Most guys with avalances I know don't even use the bed of the truck like a truck. I drive a 5.7L hemi Ram 1500.. but honestly I could get away with something like the Open Cargo Couple Concept whch is where Sports Coupe meets pickup truck without looking anything like a pickup truck.
I'm on my 2nd Avalanche and depending on what the next generation looks like will probably buy a 3rd one. The midgate is a brilliant design and gives you options NO other truck has. If you're traveling and have kids you can put a pad in the bed for them to lay on and at the same time they are still inside the vehicle and not riding in an exposed pickup bed subject to the weather and other issues. If you're hauling long items you can put them inside the vehicle instead of tying them to the rear of the bed and sticking into the sky. Plus you can keep everything dry versus exposed to the elements. As for rolling down - you'd have to make the midgate a lot bulkier and much heavier to accommodate the hardware to handle a roll down window. This is easy enough and it's protected under the gate when in the down position. Really works well.
What a crap response from someone that doesn't know what he's talking about...nothing like uninformed opinions! It's very creative and very versatile. You take the glass out or leave it in and still use the midgate either way. If the window "rolled" down how would you make that work anyway? What do you drive, Ford junk or Dodge junk? How many can you open the back window on? Idiot.

I said the same thing til I bought one, these are the most versatile vehicle I've ever had,
He’s a good car salesman, considering I want to buy 16 avalanches now

They actually make special tents for Avalanche, which makes camping a great experience in one.
I need to get one.
The Best truck ever is the avalanche 😍
Thanks 😊 🙏
He just made a big space for a queen size bed. My family can just sleep in 'there' while I drive a long-distance trip!
I was thinking bout getting a avalanche but thought the bed was too short but now that I seen this kinda changes my mind
i love my 2008. all the hippies that talk shit have never owned one. i have never met an avalanche owner that doesn't love it
avalanche I love mine!
best truck ever......

Would be a good truck bed camping truck if you left back glass in and bed cover on

It would be cool to have this in the Tesla Cybertruck
Hopefully it'll be more of an automated process
I’m hoping it does. I’m also hoping a few hundred thousand people back out of their reservation so I can get mine next year instead of 2024.
oooh i see. but i think the mechanism you pointed out is in the two swivel latches that lock the window into place in the mid gate, rather than the ones that hold it while it is up (normal position). Thanks a lot for the reply!
saving up for one of these badass toys!

I always thought this feature was cool ever since the Chevy Avalanche first came out

You could always buy a crew cab long bed, it just had to be a 3/4 ton. So not only would it be 26 feet long but it would be a foot taller too.
BTW that's not the way the midgate works now. You no longer have to take out the window to drop the midgate
I always thought they just looked a bit different from the normal trucks never knew they had this
Mechanism when the windows is released unlocks it. I could say it is F'n magic but no, its just a good invention (as an owner's opinion.) So when you put the window in its proper spot, the latches change to open with the bar.
My 05 Avalanche goes to a 8 foot, 1" bed. It isn't completely flat however. CLOSE though, close enough for me.
lansonfloyd Exactly what I was wondering. 8 ft bed trucks are usually hideous but these look good.
i have a question on how it works. There's a piece, a bar, between the window and the midgate that flips down. How does it know when to lower with the midgate when the window is taken down compared to the window staying up, and it stays up too? i probably made it confusing but any help?
I'm looking for a 2002 or 2003 Chevy Avalanche camper shell
what year is that?
How long is the long bed it transforms too? 6 and a half, or 8ft?
It transforms to roughy 8’1”
Get to hear the smells!
Can this be done to newer avalanches (08-10)?
Yes, there were two generations, the second one started in 2007 - 2013.
Look mine is great to have Chevrolet avalanche.
just wish I didn't have to remove the back window just to make bed longer. They should have made it where you can keep it in or not if you wanted.
Your wish is granted because the Avalanche can open the midgate and extend the cargo bed with the rear window in place if desired, it works either way, window in or out. I know because I have a 2002 Avalanche, the first year they were made.
@@onemoremisfit Thanks ! I will tell my husband and we will see how it works

Produced the Avalanche from 2002-2013.
You can have the glass up when transformed, it works both ways.
This ain't working on my z71 for some reason .??
I always wish that back rear window was powered
Yah that would be cool, but its not feasible because there would need to be wiring, and you cant have that when the entire back panel is removeable.
Like the Hummer SUT 05, power window in the back.
thats cool but ill stick with 8 foot bed then i can still have people in the back when i haul stuff.
I wonder how many times he actually said "actually"?
Nine, once every twenty seconds. I actually counted.
What? Sorry, I couldn't hear anything over his fake smile. He held that smile for 3 whole minuets.
Very cool
you can leave the window in and still fold down the midgate. this guy is just a sales man lookin to make a buck
yes you can leave the window in place and fold down the midgate. They are great trucks, I love mine. very versatile.

That's not a 60/40 split. That's more like a 66.6/33.4 split.

lol wtf? How? Thats pretty creative if you ask me. Nothing else really like it.
