  • The brand-new Fujifilm X-T50 has a unique feature: the Film Dial. How do you use it? What is a good strategy for getting the most out of it? How does it work with Recipes? Those are the questions that this video answers.
Following the article that I wrote about the Film Dial, I had a number of people ask if I could demonstrate for the visual learners what the post explained. That's what this video is, and I hope that it is helpful to many of you.

I've been on the fence. I have the X100v and I wasn't really wanting the X100vi, mainly because I wanted to shoot a little wider. I have about four custom recipes I use all the time on my X100v, so I wanted to make sure and bring those with me if I upgraded to the X-T50. Of course IBIS and a bigger sensor is great, but I wish the X-T50 had the same EVF I'm used to now. From what I've read, the EVF is not as good on the X-T50.

    • @FujiXWeekly
      @FujiXWeekly  2 месяца назад

The X-T50's EVF has lower resolution, but it's not something that I personally notice or care about. Going back-and-forth in the same day between the X-T50 and X100VI, I never noticed a difference. Maybe it's just my eyesight not being as good as it used to be... 😂

@@FujiXWeekly Thanks for the information. I was able to configure it. Another quick question, what dose it means when the receipe calls for like 'Exposure Compensation: +2/3 to + 1-1/3 (typically)'. Dose this means that I need to remember to set the exposure compensation using the dail prior to taking picutres?

    • @FujiXWeekly

@@chamchhun2701 It's just a suggested starting point for the exposure. It just means that oftentimes the Recipe needs a little boost in exposure for best results. But it's not intended as a "rule" and the exposure of each picture should be judged individually, since every light situation can be different. I hope that makes sense.

Same here. In the documentation the list of custom assignable functionality is long - but in camera settings if I want to assign „select custom setting“ to the rear command dial, I only get offered 4 or 5 options like film, iso, ss, etc.
Do I need to be in a special mode for it to work?

Make sure that Select Custom Settings is assigned to Rear Command Dial, then, to activate it, you first press in on the wheel (don't turn it, press it), then you can turn the wheel to cycle through C1-C7. I hope that makes sense.
To assign it, go to the Menu, navigate to the Wrench set, select Button/Dial Setting, then Function (Fn) Setting, then I believe it is called R-Dial (for Rear Command Dial).

Still, the Fuji way of doing things is kind of annoying, especially when you look at Panasonic with the S9 and how they go 100% on LUTs. I know that Fuji's is all about film sims not recipes but they should have leaned way more on the recipes, aknowledged your contribution AND payed you for your hard work (thanks a lot by the way!).

Fuji are missing a trick with LUTS and it's a good job that for me the S9 is a poor choice for stills and not retro looking. LUTS is an interesting concept and if Panasonic brought out the right body, I'd be interested.

I think they're just now trying to wrap their heads around (and hopefully embracing) the Recipe community. It's a lot larger and more passionate than I think Fujifilm Japan realized. The regional offices seem to "get it" but the Japan office is definitely playing catch-up, and they've got further to go. I hope that, moving forward, they listen to the regional offices more.

@@JackBurton-qp4hc I think using the term LUT for still photography (especially on a camera that starts with "S") is a marketing mistake. Call it something else, anything else. Other than the LUTs (and especially the app), the S9 is the least interesting full-frame camera to be released by anyone in a really long time, and the pancake lens is a joke (I think it must have been a joke that someone didn't realize was one, and went forward producing 🤣). LUTs have positive and negative aspects. The implementation seems a bit convoluted (because you need to use the correct base settings, too, for them to be "correct"). Panasonic is hoping to build a community around LUTs similar to the Fujifilm Recipe community; however, they're also using the slogan "Shoot. Edit. Share." with the S9, so I don't think they even fully "get it" themselves. 😂

@@mythicbone There are a number of features that I'd love to see added. Where I think they have to be careful is: the more they add, the more complicated it gets, and the less user-friendly it becomes. There needs to be a balance between feature-rich and simplicity. I'm not certain exactly what that balance is, but I do know that it is a thin line to tread carefully. The flip side is the more features they add, the more that one can do, and I'm all for that.

Yes and no. The camera will produce a preview based on the JPEG settings (although you are only shooting RAW), and Lightroom (or other RAW editor of choice) can/will auto-apply its version of its interpretation of the JPEG settings to the RAW file. While you can manipulate the RAW however you wish, it might make a difference as to your starting point. Also, the DR settings do directly affect the RAW files, and not just the JPEGs. Does the position of the Film Dial matter if you are a RAW-only photographer? Probably not, but to an extent it definitely could.

My audience is largely JPEG photographers.
The Film Dial does affect RAW photographs in that it will be used to generate the preview, and also that many RAW editors can/will automatically apply its version of its interpretation of the JPEG parameters to the RAW file, so you'll have a different starting point for editing. Interestingly, one of his famous Yosemite pictures was a Polaroid.

I want to be able to upload my favourite Lightroom recipes to my camera so I don't have to go through LR to post-process my pics. LR has a MUCH wider range of filter selections. Why limit us to Fuji films? Let us create the recipe in LR, then upload it to the camera and assign it to an option of the dial. More freedom.
