I feel weird feeling nostalgic for these. I actually remember having Tazos (or Pogs) of these specific drawings, many with wrong typings (like this Slugma being Poison or this Espeon being fire). Many of them had the japanese name (like Himeguma for Teddiursa). I had some of these around 2003 or 2004 from bootleg markets, and I was always baffled from these. I have closure now that I know where these come from.
This reminds me of when I discovered that Tiaramisu from Wario: Master of Disguise is supposedly wearing nerd glasses and not a Tuxedo Mask-styled eyemask. It was truly an experience.
Logging in to say that yes, I am the artist who did all these for Beckett in 1998 or so. And yes, all I had for reference was a crappy printout of the Japanese sprites. I did my best and regret nothing!
Interesting. I always assumed since Beckett was unofficial, you were Hired to do "copyright free" versions of the artwork for Pokemon. I never saw them as "leaks" when I was 12. 😹

I loved Beckett. I remember the first time i saw these pictures, I was 7yo hanging out with some other kids at my older brothers baseball game. We were convinced that the legendary beasts were the original Eeveelution's evos. I remember Sneasel being ridiculous looking
I remember when POJO ran leaks and had a poster of what the new Gen 2 mons looked like- not official art, actual quick MSPaint-looking artwork. Their doodle of smoochum saw some stuff, man…
I had this magazine, and now I just feel a deep pit of sadness, because it, along with all of my books and magazines, were in my childhood home when it burned down in 2018.
Man, I love gen 2. So much nostalgia feeling and I wasn’t even born yet. It’s just got the best vibes to it in my opinion. I love every pokémon in that gen.
I had this magazine as a kid!! Every now and then I look up the art to feel the nostalgia. I love that the Celebi has the lasting legacy of all the bootlegs being based on the Beckett art for some reason.
Dude yes! I actually got that magazine at a grocery store that no longer exists. I completely forgot about it. Got to see all of Gen 2 before it released. My friends and I were so hyped at school.
Intresting! i would love to know more about the artist who interpereted these sprites, wonder how long they spent on them, would love to here their thought process
I had that exact magazine! Sometimes they had a double magazine bonus with Pojo which featured the most recent MtG, Pokemon TCG, DragonBall, and YGO news. The art was...it was something
This was literally my intro to gen 2. I drew that tyranitar the second i saw it, bro was my favorite in that form, and is still my favorite to this DAY
This makes a few things finally make sense. I knew a few kids who were adamant that they knew things about the new Gen 2 Pokémon who just turned out to be absolutely incorrect.
I actually remember a friend who saw the Delibird leak theorizing it's either an evolution of arcanine or an alternative evolution (like with eevee at the time) of growlithe.
I love emboar but fix him by giving him a neck, a snout & longer tusk alongside being a bit slimmer. Such a cool design held back by having its arms literally attached to the side of its head like no neck Ed 😢
I had this book as a child!!!! I got it from Borders when it was around and when I was a kid I had the gen 1 pokedex that when u put a number in it it read out the pokemon and the index. So having this book I kept trying to put the newer numbers in and got nothing. So I had no idea who they really were until silver and gold came out.
Omg. I remember these images. I think they were in a book I bought labeled as a "Pokédex" too 😂 I thought they were just really bad official drawings before they polished the Pokémon!
I had that magazine, and yeah, that is where I first saw most of the gen 2 pokemon. I remember how underwhelmed I was when I first saw Celebi coming after Ho-oh.... then I saw what it actually looked like and thought "aaaaaaaaahhhhh okay this gen's Mew got it"
I REMEMBER READING THESE AT THE SUPERMARKET WHILE MY MOM WAS SHOPPING I'd forgotten all about these derpy drawings omg. I learned the Gen2 Japanese names first, too, because of the leaks.
Some of these are in the same quality of the actual gen 5 pokemon like the elemental genies, Sawk, Gurdurr, Crustle, etc. looking like someone designed them in MS Paint back in 2007
I’ll never forget the feeling when I was a kid and a schoolmate got his hands on a copy of corocoro. Seeing the steel and dark symbols but having no clue what they meant… and we had to try to figure out their names because it was all Japanese… I still can’t help but call Togetic Togetikku like we thought 😂
Tbh I love shuckle for an unknown ish reason. In Pokémon go they have their own silly little raids and I found one and screenshotted the screen where you see the usually menacing looking Pokémon where you can join the raid, and then I had a screenshot of a yellow blob with a face as any and all online image pfp’s

I would like to ask for context
I remember that. Their Corsola had no face.
My dad lived near a veteran before gen 2 was announced in the us, and he had just got back from Japan, so my dad knew about gen 2 before anyone else
I remember seeing all of Gen 2 in Pojo Magazine's May 2000 issue. I don't think I was ever more excited in my entire life.
The slugma literally looks like milhouse from the Simpsons
What you call (in the artist's rendition) Kingdra's "tongue" looks more like a fish tail sticking out of its mouth, like it's mid-snack
Nah its a tongue
I dunno. That looks pretty accurate to Gen 2 Corsola.
I had this magazine, and now I just feel a deep pit of sadness, because it, along with all of my books and magazines, were in my childhood home when it burned down in 2018.

That Gold and Purple Tyranitar looks so good!!!!
Bro the celebi looks like an alternate like wtf😭😭😭😭
i have this magazine. these goofy drawings were indeed my first introduction to gen 2 pokemon, and the japanese names were ingrained in me as well.

Ewwwwww. Those things look like they’re in pain. And is that first thing Espeon? Ewwwwwwww.
We should bring these back
It was something seeing these back then and then looking the official ones and wondered why they looked different
Oh, I still have those magazines!
I was obsessed with Beckett Pokémon Collector. There were so many amazing leaks before the internet made this stuff easy.
I never knew of these artist interpretations of Gen 2 Pokémon before they were officially revealed. That's actually pretty cool

I didn't think it was possible to improve upon perfection but little did I know what that magazine had Shuckle drawn like.

That Corsola drawing is now my new favorite thing
Shuckle looks like if the Simpsons did a parody of Pokémon
delibird had its swag increased massively by that one artist
Oh man, I remember some of these leaks. Namely the slugma and Espeon ones. It was a lot harder in general to find leak info back then.

I used to buy Beckett all the time. I'd get a pack of pokemon cards and the newest Beckett with my little allowance
I love how since they had no way of ripping the sprites themselves. They just… drew them.
I remember those beckett artworks. I was so hyped with those derpy artworks. that celebi was super creepy
I absolutely love that shuckle, looks like something from The Far Side
i didnt know those were leaks when i was a kid. thought that it was just fanart that beckett made. god i miss that magazine
Drawing from memory is a wild time.
I actually own the issue of the magazine that these came from. Really neat to look back on
Would love to see more comparisons between these and the sprites they were based on
The scrunched Slugma and the judgemental Shuckle look like the living embodiments of vine booms to me.
Bootleg Celebie could be a new meme in the making. It could sit next to “7 Grand Dad” maybe.
