Like many of you, I have a morning ritual that includes prayer and meditation. For many years, part of that ritual has been praying that "all beings be free of suffering" -- which is a traditional Buddhist loving-kindness mantra. However, over the course of this practice, I realized that my conceptualization of suffering -- and prayer and God -- was superficial and immature. You don't know how satisfying it is to hear someone to say all that. I've been trying to get it in my suffering family members' thick sculls for YEARS, but no, there is always something else to be done, externally.
Thanks. This is your best and most important post to date. Be your own best friend, be honest and kind to yourself and everything else will follow. Happiness lies within you, it is a state of mind, find it and then spread the message to others. That said, don't be afraid of suffering, seek pain and you will find pleasure, seek pleasure and you will find pain. The hardest challenges always reap the greatest reward. Enjoy your journey....
I have a tolerance for pain as long as I understand it. I had kidney surgery and they poked me through the belly 5 places, including a four inch cut up the middle, and wow did that hurt when I moved. But I didn't waste time with pain meds, because I understood that getting stabbed 5 times is going to hurt while the wounds heal. Back spasms and sciatica on the other hand hurt pretty good, but I was angry about it because I didn't understand what was going on or how to get better. Similarly, I've had anger issues and outbursts for minor stresses. It turns out I have some unresolved issues from childhood, and not recognizing where the real pain was coming from caused my suffering to magnify. As I work things out, my stress and anxiety are going away; my suffering is relieved. That said, there are comments about people and pets dying, injury and illness, and that suffering isn't avoided with a morning prayer or whatever. This is real pain, however, and it's supposed to hurt; the root cause is external and obvious. By getting our affairs in order, we can avoid the daily grind of wallowing in self inflicted misery, so when life happens to us, we can suffer that problem genuinely and grow from it.
For everyone that is skeptical and thinks this is just some sweet spiritual baloney, I can tell you that he is actually very right. I was skeptical of spirituality and its practices too until I actually tried them. Consistent meditation made me experience the benefits.
I've been on the Buddhist path for nearly 30 years. I had a hard time developing the practices around love and compassion, the phrases teachers often used were things like may beings be free of suffering, may they be safe and happy. I always understood this as free from external sources of suffering, like you said. Then one time in practice as I was experimenting with phrases I thought, may beings be resilient and that sort of unlocked something for me. The wish for people to have the internal resources to meet the external sources suffering they face in the world generated much more love and compassion than wishing they didn't have the external difficulties. The phrases I use most these days are may all beings be confident, resilient and grounded, may they face the world with peace and equanimity. Listening to you here solidified the external vs internal suffering that I think I've been feeling and adjusting to, I hadn't put it in quite that concrete of a way. It seems to me these days we're coming to understand that people need a certain level of stress and discomfort to be healthy. I've been taken by the idea of anti-fragility, too much comfort isn't a good thing. In that context wishing for people to be free from all external suffering, in effect, is a wish for people to be worse off. There's a difference between distress and eustress, between the learning zone and the the panic zone though, so people do need to have some level of freedom from external difficulty to grow. I just think the balance has gone too far into the coddling zone. The western Buddhist community largely self selects for progressive, educated, professionals and hippies. There is a general movement from some teachers and many community members that places an emphasis on addressing systemic (aka political) sources of suffering, rather than address suffering at the personal level, think the second noble truth about the source of suffering. Occasionally you'll get the activist Buddhist who will do the standard attempt to intimidate and shame you if you keep things true to the intention of the Buddha and talk about suffering at the personal, internal level rather than the systemic, external level. Though most there are more grounded and equanimous, there's more a general political vibe that I think runs counter to the Buddhist frame. There are still several good Buddhist teachers who are certainly progressive in their attitudes (they almost have to be to continue to teach), but stick to a traditional Buddhist view of suffering. I should say, I have no issue with people of a progressive persuasion, who's practice informs their politics (or vis versa). Just keep your politics out of my religion, its a corrupting influence. These days I don't go to Buddhist gatherings anymore, I don't come away feeling calmer like I used to. I feel happyish but agitated. I engage on Buddhist forums pushing back on the politicization, presenting and advocating for balance and an internal view of suffering.
I realised a long time ago that necessary suffering is necessary, and unnecessary suffering is unnecessary. Still struggle with unnecessary suffering though. Most of it is self loathing, and the only way I can see an end to that is death, as you cannot fundamentally change who you are.
Awesome video. I would like to hear your thoughts on the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Could be an interesting video idea. Thanks for the valuable content.
I have lived through many situations in which I was at peace and happy before a specific illness or tragedy occurred and returned to those states once the conflict was resolved externally. Sometimes, the cause of our affliction IS mostly related to our external circumstances.
I found that gratitude was something I was missing throughout much of my life. A sense of entitlement lead me to believe that if I didn't have what I wanted, then I was being wronged. The truth is, I don't deserve anything. Just being alive is a gift. I will hold onto this realization because God gave it to me. Now I dedicate that which was given to me back to Him.
What a helluva an episode... I too believe that sometimes, all it takes is a model of courage and peace to inspire change in others. That's the biggest reason that I continue to live life as I do inside and outside RUclips. Nice one doc!

Its so refreshing to hear someone like yourself come to the exact same realizations that I have. Long fought realizations in my case. It took me years of questions and trial and error. Often going against the grain. Often being ridiculed or scorned for my approach. For a long time I've not been interested in Dogma or being politically correct or sugar coating things just to tell people what they want to hear. I'm a practical guy. I've had a strong BS meter from an early age. I have my Father to thank for this. But I took it to the next level. Life has pain. The pain of life is unavoidable. However suffering is a choice. Thank you Shinzen Young
this is good. I think it helps sort out what's internal suffering and what's coming from outside. If I say "Stop bothering me" and a person doesn't stop, I shouldn't engage with that person ever again! A roommate, a boss, a date a sibling or a parent. Too bad. Im outta here. And its not really sad. If you don't want to live anymore, DON'T! Makes sense.. I might be outta here sooner than later. Thanks for this. No need to go around suffering about it
By far the best and most reasonable, yet simple way to look at your own suffering - it is self caused by your beliefs, thoughts, ignorance, delusion and actions - not rooted in reality. I always thought "praying to God" or "leaving it up to him " was like a wish list to Santa! Thank you for saying it like that. There's no personal accountability in that. It is a painful process because after awakening you may go in and out of suffering by getting angry at external events, thoughts, etc.
When I feel forgotten and hopeless Lord let your water of life comfort me. Even though I fell on hard times these pass three years. I’m holding on and keeping faith even though it’s hard. Faith is our armor against the enemy. I keep faith even as I constantly struggle to provide for my children and I constantly struggle to buy groceries. My husband died years ago. At times I feel so alone especially as a single mom. Since suffering a heart attack two years ago and my on going battle with lupus I’m overwhelmed and discouraged. Both of my sons are autistic but because of you Lord they are thriving. I’m now homeschooling them so my hours to work are limited. I’m afraid Lord. Afraid of homelessness. Thankfully I have you Lord! I know you will continue to provide you have this far. I LOVE YOU HEAVENLY FATHER.
Love your channel. Many thanks. Try this, it is not the truth. When we become aware of our suffering, we start to inquire, on how to overcome our suffering. Suffering is designed, to lead to our eventual enlightenment. One great cause of our suffering, is the harm we inflicted upon others, in our current life, as well as in many past lifetimes. One of the many ways, to get out of our suffering, is to forgive others and ask for forgiveness from those we have hurt. Apologise to our victims sincerely. Suffering arises from our karma. Pray and meditate. By taking responsibility for our past mistakes, our victims begin to heal. We then start to heal. Another step, is to be of service and contribute positively to our community. Being vegetarian is also encouraged. Blessings to all. May all beings be healed of their suffering. May all be blessed with wisdom and discernment. May all follow their divine guidance. May all live a life of love, joy and peace.
Bro 😂, first few seconds of hearing the chant and I already change my mood to one of greather compassion (or attempt at one) and dull judgement (sharp judgenemt being the one where your emotins follow, this one "just is") Powerful stuff if you are pre-disposed to let it in your head Tnx for the tool
It's also the pragmatic reason why you should wish well upon your enemies or pray for them, if they are doing well they are less likely to terrorize not just you but others.
I believe this is tied to a lot of the political strife & unhappiness we have going on today. Many people are envious of those they perceive as successful. So they demand equality of outcome at all costs. They fail to realize all the good in their own lives, and all the suffering they're creating via their own decisions.
"Hatred is a curse that does not effect the hated, it is like a poison, we must release the hatred to stop poisoning ourselves." "It is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of him."

The more material possessions we have the more we suffer, because we are bound by attachment. Learn to let go of things that you dont need, holding on to it will make you unhappy. Liberation is true happiness.
This is beautiful, Orion. Thank you. Edit: The first half anyway. I think bringing up the "like and subscribe" message halfway through a video breaks you from your train of thought and the listener from theirs.
Malice is common and the cause of much suffering. That said, the harder truth is that our response should be the same whether the source of suffering is our own sin or being "sinned against." Repent for the sin, including in in our response to abuse, whether pride, rage, or despair. That may be unwelcome advice for a victim to pray to let go of their anger, for example, but it's the path back to joy.
Existence consists of indefinite desire and desire is the root of all sufferings. I found out that the less we desire the less we suffer. Be open- minded to everything but attach to nothing I heard that to Wayne Dyer and makes me think also though it says my kind of person is open minded person 😊 attachment concept I only knew it lately in life . I'm a little bit sacrificing now because of my dream 😊 however it's manageable 😊. There are certain and uncertainties and that's the nature of life . Good morning 🌄☕🌾🇵🇭🧡

You don't know how satisfying it is to hear someone to say all that. I've been trying to get it in my suffering family members' thick sculls for YEARS, but no, there is always something else to be done, externally.
If a slow clap could be done justice through a comment, it would be this 👏
👏
👏
Profound as always 🙏
Suffering not only from ignorance, also ego.
I'm taking responsibility for my suffering.
Great video! As I always say, "Pain is mandatory. Suffering is optional."
I call bullshit on that
For everyone that is skeptical and thinks this is just some sweet spiritual baloney, I can tell you that he is actually very right.
This is helpful and timely!
Call to action: go within to make the world less evil
Amazing content on a consistent basis! We’re all learning and growing.
Thanks for your support, Jessie.
I realised a long time ago that necessary suffering is necessary, and unnecessary suffering is unnecessary. Still struggle with unnecessary suffering though. Most of it is self loathing, and the only way I can see an end to that is death, as you cannot fundamentally change who you are.
My Buddhist teacher taught me that ages ago, and I truly begin to appreciate the significance of this prayer as I get older.
The path to Enlightment Is A Long And Ardous One.
May others be as fortunate as I on such a tumultuous Path!
Thank you. Greetings from Denmark
Awesome video.
I would like to hear your thoughts on the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Could be an interesting video idea.
Thanks for the valuable content.
Thanks!
this is the most important truth and teaching
This video is both a mood and profound.
Addicted to your channel! Thank you for spreading truth and awareness. You’ve taught me so much 🙏🏾
I have lived through many situations in which I was at peace and happy before a specific illness or tragedy occurred and returned to those states once the conflict was resolved externally.
Along the years you have squired so much knowledge!
What a helluva an episode... I too believe that sometimes, all it takes is a model of courage and peace to inspire change in others. That's the biggest reason that I continue to live life as I do inside and outside RUclips. Nice one doc!
Thank you, Dr. Taraban. Your channel has alleviated a lot of my suffering.
For years I wondered where the gaping black hole in my soul derived from , this video has given me answers, & that the answer was in my own eyes & heart . It takes courage to face yourself, to mend the monsters within we created , I think they just needed to be seen & forgiven . thank you . May inner peace be with you to all through this process of being light embodied roaming through earth . We are limitless potential & beyond
Yes, myself included. I wouldn't say I'm struggling, more like moulting while coming out of hibernation. I'm often cranky.
Thank You Orion❤
Orion, I started seeing your vids through the lens of relationship battles, and how to better navigate them. This video makes me see how you are not only pursuing ultimate wisdom, but you’re also trying to encourage all of us to get there, and help one another. As a burned out ex-Christian, I cannot thank you enough for being more relevant, more educated, more sensitive and more happy! Thank you!
No need to go around suffering about it
Danke!
Incredible breakdown of the subject Dr.
Only minority can really appreciate the performance put out by an orchestra to describe the same popularity of the content you output.
People are either chasing happiness or avoid suffering. Orion is absolutely correct.
Thanks
7:24 this was great ♥️
Prayer is to give thanks not to ask for things🙌🙌
It is both
Ask believing and give thanks and it is yours.
Thank you. Have a great day ahead.
Echart Tolle speaks on this a lot. I can recommend The Power of Now enough.
Alan Watts talking about the "I" comes to mind , it's all about perception doc
Life is suffering...no one will escape for free. Maybe ways to transcend suffering.
That's your own sad mindset. I don't suffer. I simply don't accept it.
@@LisaCulton life is suffering....every one around you dies. You get sick, get hurt etc. Yes, there are great things about life but it is suffering.
@@toddjohnson271 I am healthy, I am safe and people die, but the soul lives on. Zero suffering. I don't do that.
Thank you for your prayers! This is why God loves you so much. I knew it.
Fantastic video doc. Taking responsibility for our feelings is extremely important
I was always amazed at how aligned to the Eastern way of life your analysis & solutions were. This confirms it.
YESSSSSS#!!!
¡Gracias!
To desire(the impossible or improbable)is to suffer....🤲
Excellent video. I find your insight enlightening and different than anything that's out there.
May all beings be free of malice. Our will is solely our own, and what we will be judged upon. God pardons the son, not the will.
Bro 😂, first few seconds of hearing the chant and I already change my mood to one of greather compassion (or attempt at one) and dull judgement (sharp judgenemt being the one where your emotins follow, this one "just is")
Powerful stuff if you are pre-disposed to let it in your head
Tnx for the tool
Valeu!
Thats why I read and practice stoicism
Hope you never vote Democrat
It's also the pragmatic reason why you should wish well upon your enemies or pray for them, if they are doing well they are less likely to terrorize not just you but others.
One of the four Immeasurables.. been following you for a while, thanks for all your work. Very insightful as always!
Thanks!
Thank you ass allways dr! A big hug from Uruguay :)
No path is free of pain, but not all paths lead to a reward.
I believe this is tied to a lot of the political strife & unhappiness we have going on today. Many people are envious of those they perceive as successful. So they demand equality of outcome at all costs. They fail to realize all the good in their own lives, and all the suffering they're creating via their own decisions.
Punctual reminder. Thanks Doc
The problem shrinks and recoils when named.
You have not met a narcissist I guess.
@@purplesprigs A whole religion of it, actually.
Damn bro. You stepped on my toes with this one, Orion
"Hatred is a curse that does not effect the hated, it is like a poison, we must release the hatred to stop poisoning ourselves."
"It is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of him."
association with the unbeloved is dukkha; separation from the loved is dukkha; not getting what is wanted is dukkha. SN 56.11
And what is the cause by which dukkha comes into play? Craving is the cause by which dukkha comes into play. AN 6.63
But whoever overcomes this wretched craving, so difficult to overcome, from him sorrows fall away like water from a lotus leaf. - dhp336
Suffering IS the path.
Well said 🙌
Thank you so much for your work. You are an amazing human being, and a big role model for many people, myself included for how to lead a conscious life based in reality. Your work is truly aiding in helping get rid of unnecesary suffering and my thoughts and prayers go to you and to your cause as you deserve them all. May your positivity help to bloom beautiful and strong thought trees in the soul gardens of as many beings as possible :)
Thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors cause our own suffering.
thank you for this video
Malice is common and the cause of much suffering. That said, the harder truth is that our response should be the same whether the source of suffering is our own sin or being "sinned against." Repent for the sin, including in in our response to abuse, whether pride, rage, or despair. That may be unwelcome advice for a victim to pray to let go of their anger, for example, but it's the path back to joy.
I love your approach
O Captain! My Captain! You had me at "don't think about the person who needs to hear this message."
Hit the nail on the head again. Thanks for taking your time to share.
Prayer changes things because prayer changes me. You can ask for things in prayer. The key is to ask believing and give thanks.
