Good point about Telstra and Optus. Whilst Telstra still have the best overall coverage, you'd be surprised at how many places there are out bush where Optus reception is decent but Telstra reception is non-existent. Not quite the same but I've been using a dual SIM phone for years just because it's nice to have Telstra and Optus on standby, in case I'm somewhere where only one or the other is available and I need to make a call (or be contactable).
Yeah even when both have coverage if it’s busy (say Easter) the Telstra cells slows right down because so many people are on it and often the Optus cell is faster.
@@JebbreysJibberish That's true... it's the exact opposite of data speeds in metro areas, where Optus is usually slow as a wet week because they don't have anywhere nearly as many cells as Telstra.
Often, like now, tourist destinations like the south west of Western Australia have awful coverage as the Telstra network is almost completely shutdown. I couldn’t even maintain a phone call this morning and haven’t had 4g internet that was usable for a week in Busselton. Optus however has less traffic and is working great! We’ve had this on a. Few trips in busy periods where Optus is working good and Telstra is just congested to the point of being g usless.
THanks for the video. No intention of having a go at you for making a video about internet whilst camping but I would like to mention that the term WiFi shouldn't be used to describe the internet because it perpetuates confusion. Wifi is one of many methods to connect to the internet, just like a dirt road or highway allows you to reach a freeway (however a dirt road is not a freeway), best analogy that comes to mind at the moment...Cheers
Nighthawk are very popular and sounds like you have exactly what you need for your use. We went with a Cel Fi with upgraded aerials and works a treat. Thanks great video
They certainly have their place and for in the car would be excellent for us but I can’t justify that expense. If we were living on the road full time maybe.
Hi Jeff, minus Optus this is my setup. I do use a panel antenna as well as the Omni for my remote camp, depending where and whether I need the gain. A hint for your fellow youtubers: Switch the phone to airplane mode then activate wireless and bluetooth. Stops the phone looking for better signals and makes a huge difference to battery life.Nick
Good point with turning off data, it doesn’t affect the phone with no sim in obviously, but for any others it sure would save battery especially in low coverage areas. I should remove the TV antenna and put a panel phone antenna in its place, bloody great idea Nick!
No problem. To mount the antenna onto the wineguard I just used a bit of ally square tube the same size as what makes the main mast and just bolted it on as a slight extension to get the base of the antenna above the tv antenna.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Optus and Telstra use slightly different frequencies so it’s good to make sure your antenna is wide band and can handle as many as possible.
Good point! I've added it to the description for others as well. If you look in the video description now you will see a link to the exact same antenna and bracket that I used as a kit.
HI Jeff, Thanks for your vid I was looking at going for the new night hawk M5 but they are not available any more so you talking about how well the M1 works maybe another option Cheers, one thing that I was told by a telstra sales men was you can't use a phone sim in a modem as one is data and one is phone ??? but I have seen a few people using this set up, now I'm confused LOL Cheers Mark
Well from personal experience that salesman was full of …. We use our Telstra and Optus sims from our phones with no problem. I’d guess he was trying to sell you a new contract that you didn’t need. Thanks for the feedback guys! 😀
I've been considering something like this, as I too am not a fan of Cel-Fi GO. Will look more into it now. I was a user of Chromecast but found it so unreliable. I've now switched to Fire TV (Amazon). Have you experienced using this on your set-up?
I haven’t used the Fire TV on this setup but it should work fine as it’ll think your just at home. The chrome casts did have a period a year or two ago where they were really bad but the last 12-18 months have been really good, the best ever.
I actually haven't put one on the car as yet. I'm planning to do that, and it will most likely be a lower Dbi shorter style on the roof rack. It will work better up there than on the bullbar. Most antennas require a pigtail adaptor something like this (You will have to check the connector that comes with your antenna first though) : www.ebay.com.au/itm/163639192605?hash=item2619a7ec1d:g:~0EAAOSw0IBcncwE&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA8AlD1MEGmt6XlwJ59eMqNM%2BxC0zrJLR8LbCizQh%2B0Eb%2FCG7YBSZaV2CY2xdkxpzmPc4HngfWeV16G1%2F%2BnkkU1s0NVkqZgGx8%2FBsQDfFpNdF93DghwT5J52mxjFOQrQRnngrErZ88Xsr%2FMjYcftYecjGR8dfzbIXUYOVIcNhlX3MYG86o8NmPM54F6uF3ndDeHXordcFTve3sRbwNOez4bxi5IIV6FmXLFc4fZ9aIKcLZ3vtXZRNxPNPUDAAf1F6FKcpnLvkvgIJxtiEYKNxDYymAs%2BNOxBogk5uicmEq6oAixjuJVCQheR2loSM4IVaDsQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM7s-6q61g
Yeah that’s fine coverage I’ve ok. But most of the places we camp are 1 or 2 bars of 3G. Not enough to steam. The Netgear and antenna solve that issue. We are experimenting with Starlink and the moment. Just wow.
Finally someone who understands that Optus is way better than Telstra! (where Optus coverage is available)

@@TheKnobCalledTone.not really, Optus has ALOT of sites in the cities! It’s to do with the location of the sites and what antennas are being used
