I have put together a collection of popular campervan building products in my Amazon storefront along with some great ideas for you to look through www.amazon.co.uk/shop/melsvanworld
ive never heard or seen an external ariel that uses an ethernet connection, and after searching im 99% sure it doesnt support it bc the orher versions have the correct connection with seperate or included ariels. do you have an update if you found out it doesnt work like that or an upgrade? thanks for the video
ive finally found the the attachment airiels, they were obscure but only too an extra minute finding after the comment. they are a weird format with the pushfit and bot the screw type they opted for in past and newer routers
Don't know if you're aware but you can remove the battery from the Nighthawk 1 and leave it hooked up to the USB and not risk cooking the battery. Useful video, keep it up
Hi Mel I've installed the same poyntin aerial however I used tie wraps to fix it to my bracket, my reasoning is if I hit a low hanging branch the tie wrap will break before the aerial 👍
When I use the mobile phone as a "router" on the roof, I use the same trick as sailors does when they put it up in their mast - I put it in a plastic bag and attach it to the roof rack, radio antenna or any other thing on the roof. Then if I forget it, it is both protected from the weather and from falling off.
brilliant suggestion ... just installed exactly the same in our new campervan (Colin) and signal strength is great ... also bought the EE package. Managed to get unlimited data for the router and 100gig for my phone all for £30 a month. Thought that was a pretty good deal. Thanks for the video ... it was exactly what I needed.
Just a tip, as you have the exact same antennae as me and have fitted it almost identically. The antennae in the case itself are extremely fragile and the top is only push fitted. On 2 occasions now, the top has been ripped off by a tiny bit of twig hitting it just wrong while driving slowly up a track (similar to the narrow one you squeezed down to a carpark recently) and the second time, it broke the antennae and I had to replace the whole thing. I've since cut a 1/4" thick piece of ply about an inch larger in all directions and mounted that between the bracket and the antennae so any twigs hit the ply not the antenna, and that has so far sorted the issue. Just sprayed it in white van paint and lacquer to stop it getting soggy. Dry wood barely interferes with signal, but wet will make a huge difference so the lacquer is important. Hopefully that's useful as it's be nice to prevent anyone else having to replace expensive antennas like I had to
That'd help too, yep. I had no option with mine but to place it relatively centrally behind the roof vent. Nice router choice too, I'm currently using my old Huawei one off contract, it works well speed wise but isnt ideal
Nice to see a comparison with home speeds Mel thank you. That’s the router I have on my wish list so now I know what to expect thanks again see you in the next one.
Thanks for all your information I've built a long wheelbase sprinter off grid used the solar controler unit you suggested had a few weeks away in it with my wife i love it

So ! I’m thinking of using copper brake pipe but sliding it in a slightly bigger rubber pipe. What’s your thoughts ! Because they use copper pipes to supply the engines Looking forward to your reply Dave.,,
Thank you buddy for making this video. Been a massive question I’ve been thinking for a while about internet in the van and did ask on my Instagram and loads looked but one person only answered me with EE. Your videos are truly inspiring buddy and your always soo helpful. Big hugs to a great video. All my love to you and Becks 💕🤗
Mel, you legend. Just the advice we were looking for. Its been a nightmare getting signal in some of these wild spots. Trying to upload a video to RUclips took over 24 hours back in Scotland 🤣👍
Been using net gear nighthawk for 3 years , my advice is if using it always plugged into a power source remove the battery, they can badly overheat and melt, they fine with no battery and don’t get hot
The M1 is a cracking bit of kit, given the price of everything 5G its probably more cost effective to stick with 4G until the price of 5G gear gets more realistic.
Hi Mel, I also have a Nighthawk fitted in the van and run that on a Smarty, my smart phone is on Giffgaff. Next year when we start travelling a lot more then I may switch EE which as you say is a more readily available network…. At the moment I’m using a Poynting Puck-2 which works fine and is less visible, but may also get the same antenna you’re using as an alternative. Keep up the good work as I always enjoy watching your vlogs 👍🍻
Hi, we’ve got the Nighthawk M2 and the Poynting antenna, absolutely brilliant, hubby has adapted a cycle cleaning stand and extendable pole 😊 Happy holidays 😊😊
Hi Mel, really enjoyed your video on Wi-Fi signal in your van! I’ve bought a van just looking to get it converted can’t wait to start the adventure. Your videos are very helpful thanks🤟🏻👍🌻Seán
Hi I don't know if you're aware Lavara At the moment, I can't speak for the Future of course, but at the moment, they are doing unlimited calls, unlimited text and unlimited data for twenty three poand that's working on the vodafone network. Or I think it's something like 25 pounds for SIM only where you pay monthly. Immediately on a rolling contract.
I bought a HUAWEI B535-333 with a cheap £30 4G/5G aerial on the roof, I've been getting around the same in some places Mel. If you fancy doing a comparison in the same area, I'm only in Bath so not far from you. :)
The Poynting XPOL-1 antenna is really an antenna which is not made to be installed on moving objects such as an RV. We suggest considering the PUCK-2 or the better, but bigger MIMO-3-V2-12 which are units created for vehicle and such. Furthermore they are E-mark certified, so can legally be installed on RV, Bus, cars, vans, trucks and many more types of vehicles. The XPOL-1 does not have such certification.
I use my phone as a mobile hotspot but just wish I could connect it to an exterior antenna to improve reception. The only option is a router but this would need another SIM plan doubling the cost. I could slot my SIM into the router, but then I wouldn't be able to use my phone 🙈 It's a shame the router can't access your phone's SIM via Bluetooth 😕
@@BigVanSmallWorld I've been looking into this all morning and it appears that some routers allow you to tether a mobile phone via the USB port, so a second internal SIM is not required. Would you be able to see whether this works? Just wondering whether the external aerial will still boost the signal on the connected phone 🤔
Hi Mel. Have you done a speed test on the router while it isn't connected to the antenna? It would be interesting to see the difference the antenna makes. Also what effect does it have on the signal, how many bars does it add? Cheers
It’s really dependent on your location it can make a massive difference and the one thing I don’t talk about in this video is the affects of the mobile signal bouncing around inside your van it can’t be good for you that’s another good thing about having antennas out side 👍
Definitely depends on your location and surroundings (and also your network). But anecdotally, where I am right now, it adds 2 bars, DL goes from 40mb to 110mb, and UL goes from 3.5mb to 10mb, ping is 30ms.
The point of the antenna is to actually catch a signal at all. If there is a speed bonus lovely, but if there is no signal there is no speed full stop.
A bit chilly in the van mel ? Been wanting to start my van build but alas had no time or weather to begin anything. Insulation wise is it best to keep it simple Thanks for your time and effort in making your brilliant vids. Kind regards Glyn
Nice vid Mel, personally I use a TP-Link Archer MR400 AC1200 which also takes an external antenna and works off 12v. I currently use in the house on an unlimited data, no throttling at £16 per month without contract (Smarty, a 3 reseller) and £89 for the router.
@@paddycaseygsxr I haven't seen any reviews but so far everything has been good. Coverage is good even where I live in the middle of nowhere and my usual data is well over 100Gb and I've not had any slowing down, that was one of the major points I've been watching.
Does the dongle work without the antenna attached? Would have been good to see a speed comparison with and without the antenna attached, or with the same sim put in your mobile and doing a speed test inside and outside the van direct from mobile :)
Thank you have a look at my last video about diesel heaters I’d recommend using MaXpeedingRods for quick delivery and they have plenty of different options good luck with your build 👍
Hi Mel, another good one, Netgear equipment is good quality stuff but is expensive, you get what you pay for I suppose, just be careful of overhanging branches or it might be hanging over your back doors, say stafe, LOL!!!
Hi Mel great video as always and I wondered if that was a stove van for your little cub burner as I was thinking of getting one for my little stove.thank you and keep up the good work boss💯
Your van is metal and acts like a cage so by putting the aerial outside on the top of your van will make a big difference. I use mine in my caravan which is fibre glass and makes no difference at all whether the aerial inside or outside the caravan. I too have difference options like 3 network for my router and a different network for my phone.
Thank you for the elocution lesson I’m a cockney that’s been dragged up and thrown out more schools than I care to remember sent to australia and back I make no apologies for the way I talk
@@BigVanSmallWorld No need to apologise Mel, I am a northern, but neither of us are Americans (not that that's a bad thing either!). Keep the vids coming.
5:11 no sure if using that additional extension cable is a good idea… reason being good quality cables are made so they match impedance (resistance at different frequencies) to the antenna lets say 50 ohms.. so those little extensions inevitably add resistance and lower your received signal.. the question is how much… could be significant or not
Mel Looking at getting a VPN (Surfshark, Nordic etc) for our M1. Any ideas as to want we need? Going on a Spainish trip in May and would like a bit of security. Thanks Fella really enjoy your channel.
Hi Mel. Love the vlog on this Router. Purchased it myself. Works as described by you. Die design and make a 3d holder for this Netgear Router. Just wondered if you’d like one to try. Happy to send you one if interested. Maybe just exchange it for one of your stickers to put in my Motorhome. Be nice to start a collection of stickers as you’d be the first one I’d have. Let me know if you’d like on has I’d be more than happy to let you have one Warren
Hi Mel, Great video, really helpful content buddy. I start van life full time from 2nd March and I've been toying with the idea of Starlink vs Netgear Nighthawk. I plan to be far off-grid most of the time so i'm wondering if you've managed to get signal in very rural places such as far North Scotland? I'm really torn between the two
Hi Mel, I’m currently converting a Citroen Relay so interested in this. We do a lot of hiking & like to be off grid, can you tell me if this has made a big difference in poor service & internet areas. Important for us to be able to keep in touch with our son while away. Thanks
Hi Mel, interesting video. You didnt mention how you keep the unit powered? Do you just run it from the 12v battery or does it go via an inverter as i'm looking for a router that I can just power off of 12v. Thanks for any info you can provide!!
It actually has a built in battery that you charge from a USB so I keep it plugged in most of the time to a USB hub that I use for charging all my equipment 👍😊👍
Great vid Mel . I’ve got the same Ariel . Can you cut the wires as I won’t need all of it . Just before I cut it and realise I can’t 🤣. I e got the netgear too , but a different model . Thanks mate 👍🏼
Thank you buddy I did think about cutting them back but decided not to as the ends are crimped on and looking like you need a special tool to do it 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel, very informative as usual, thanks for sharing your van live experience .I have an issue if you can help me with, can’t connect my phone to my netgear router, do you reckon it could be because I’m using a regular SIM card instead of an only data one, thanks
I’m using a regular sim and I’ve also switched to the one out my phone to use I’ve had no issues but I do use EE in the router and 3 in my phone so I’m using two different networks so if one is crap i switch to the other hope this helps
The links you give for the adapter extension is for one split But how does that work when that can only plug into just one of the antenna cables I understand the extension goes to x2 ports on the router but why only 1 cable from the antenna or are the links wrong showing a splitter on one cable lol that’s confusing a little
Hi Mel, great explainer video. I’ve copied you for this set up, however, confused how you connect your aerial to your nighthawk? I got the nighthawk and it seems to only have an Ethernet connection, whereas the aerial has a double sma? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Hi Mel, another interesting video. I was wondering, I remember watching a video of you installing a gadget that lets you know where your van is if stolen and informs you even when you close your door by text because of the jolt. Then I watched your video of the dash cam that records when the van jolts when your not at home so to speak. Does this mean that every time you leave your van your dash cam starts recording also? I'm a bit confused about the whole set up, or have I just missed something. Cheers Mel.
@@BigVanSmallWorld Haha, yes you have Mel. Would it be possible to have a completely separate small solar system just to run the 'through the night' gadgets, that wouldn't drain the main set up. Say, like a 50W panel drip charging a Jackery 240 through the day? This is an idea I'm contemplating. Let me know what you think, and would it be worth while? Cheers Mel.
Great video, just purchased a similar router and EE 12 month 120 GB data card :-). Did you have any problems setting up the router, tried EE APN settings, but so far no luck. EE card works in my phone, and router works on my vodafone sim... so think its the settings ?
hi, Mel would this ariel work ok with the net gear set up would you no mate Poynting XPOL-1 V2 5G 3dBi Omni-Directional Cross Polarised LTE 2x2 MIMO...
Hi Mel, very informative video. How does the data work in very busy areas like festivals etc? Im ready to buy the same set up but would it actually make a difference when we have full 4G signal on phone but i assume the transmitter mast is over subscribed if that makes sense. Thanks
Hi Just a quick question, which I am confident you can answer.. I have just installed a 4g Wi-Fi system in my old van and it works fine, the problem I have is powering the router, it runs down, even tho I have it connected to a leisure battery via 12v plug when in use… 🤔 is there any way I can power as I am using?? Thanks 🙏🏻
Nice vid.... For me, i got a signal booster i wanna try out in my SUV.... I live in an area where i get sketchy signal some times so yeah... Not installed yet tho 🤣
Hi Mel, i've just bought one of these routers. I am puzzled because i can only achieve a measly 1mbps download speed! I have a '3' SIM card in the router. Seeing you get 47mbps is what i was hoping for. Am i doing something wrong? Also can you use the router to connect to a wifi service in a campsite for example? Most campsites we've visited offer wifi but unless you are parked up within a few meters of their router there is no signal. thanks.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble I think you will find it’s the 3 SIM card you need to go with EE gadget Jon made a video all about the best sim for WiFi I’m pretty sure he recommended EE too as for camp site wifi I would never trust a public wifi to many clever hackers out there hope this helps
Hiya Mel enjoying your Vlogs thanks for taking the time to explain, just got this setup from your amazon account, the code got the aerial don't work have you another code probably could find one myself but getting you your bit of commission 😀 cheers Stuart 🍻
Not a short comment follows.. Great video, although a little confusing in your wording, unless things have different meanings over there to here, The router and your phone are using cellular data, and your router is sending / Communicating that data wirelessly to your device, i:E Computer or tablet. Wi-Fi has a limited range, cellular data does not. Example you say Wifi external antenna when its a cellular external antenna, Your wording suggests that the router is RECEIVING its signal wirelessly. And with this comment I should get 'Troll of the week" Keep up the great work. Norman
Tricky subject here. I i have some friends who will seek out sites that have no mobile signal but have a good wi fi so they are able to disappear on their terms. Others require all the data they can download to keep the grandchildren happy, As a RUclips creator upload is understandably important to you. There is no magic bullet for mobile data but spreading across 2 networks as you have done is a wise move. For myself i just need to be able to contact the outside world should the need arise. Horses for courses as they say.
Hi Mel your video is a little misleading the little adapter cable u used is a sma to ts9 adapter and you need one because your poynting arial lead won't fit your router you need the adapter lead you telling people you bought because its more bendy basically and one more thing I think you have been watching to much American TV Americans call routers the way you do but over here we say it like rooter I know that's spelt wrong it's how it sounds good vid tho I have same system spot on
Agree with your recommendation on Netgear Nighthawk but not on Network provider. Vodafone outclasses both EE and 3 for UK coverage. Will be interesting when 5G is operating once all 5G masts are installed.
You can get unlimited data on three network for £11 mth business. I'm in business & so are you Mel. Think you said you were paying £30 mth. And I find three is much better for data
hi Mel off the top of your head how many gigs of data would you roughly use in one month reason I asked is Plusnet only do a 50gig a month on a 30day contract and would that be enough data as Plusnet uses the EE network
I have just bought a router and an EE sim but - we only go away a few times a year so is there a way that I can avoid paying 30 quid a month and just buy say 30/50Gb of data and when it runs out, I buy more, even if it is say, 6 months later?
i have a question, i have one sim card only that i use and its my mobile phone number, with this unit will.i have to remove my sim card from my phone and put it in the router everytime i want my boosted intetnet? because that would be a pain...

Hi Mel great video as always and I wondered if that was a stove van for your little cub burner as I was thinking of getting one for my little stove.thank you and keep up the good work boss💯
Yes it is 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld tidy cheers boss 👍
Love it Mel! Always wondered how that would work!
Thank you glad you found it useful 👍
campsite i was on bad wifi signal good around office and reception area but bad for rest of site
Your van is metal and acts like a cage so by putting the aerial outside on the top of your van will make a big difference. I use mine in my caravan which is fibre glass and makes no difference at all whether the aerial inside or outside the caravan. I too have difference options like 3 network for my router and a different network for my phone.
Thank you 😊
Loving the winter look Mel, beanie and a bit of a beard lol.
Thank you 👍🤓👍
Mel. I love your vids but why are you saying it in American??? We are English right?? Router
It’s all English you understand rite so what’s it matter
Mel you didn't paint the tongues on your T&G bare wood now showing on your joints after shrinkage, good vlog on the wifi 10/10 👍
Thank you buddy it’s two years old now and looking tatty so I’m thinking of re doing it all soon maybe in the spring 👍🤓👍
Another great review Mel, but one point, its a router (pronounced 'root' er), we are not Americans, otherwise a router is a woodworking tool. lol
Nonsense… you can pronounce it the American way when you are talking about WiFi routers… just not when you are giving directions…
5:11 no sure if using that additional extension cable is a good idea… reason being good quality cables are made so they match impedance (resistance at different frequencies) to the antenna lets say 50 ohms.. so those little extensions inevitably add resistance and lower your received signal.. the question is how much… could be significant or not
I know right but what choice is there?
Morning 😊☕. God blessed you regarding your phone....A small neat device.
Thank you Kat 👍🤓👍
Mel
Looking at getting a VPN (Surfshark, Nordic etc) for our M1.
Let me know if you’d like on has I’d be more than happy to let you have one

Hi buddy send me your address melpettipher@msn.com
Hi Mel,
Great video, really helpful content buddy.
Thanks
Yes, absolutely it’s made a difference for sure 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks for the reply Mel. Got one today, £50 bargain off Facebook marketplace & currently giving it a try in the Peak District 👍🏼
What do you think about air bags for extra suspension
I had them on my T4 was a pain in the ass
Nice one Mel been looking at the same setup thanks for sharing stay safe 🌈😊
Thank you and you too 👍🤓👍
Another great informative video Mel
You two stay safe 👍👍👍😎
Thank you and you 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel, interesting video.
Thanks for your reply Mel, I’m apparently doing something wrong.
Another ace video Mel 👍
Hi Mel, great stuff keep it going. What was the make of your new WiFi antenna please
All links in the description
The links you give for the adapter extension is for one split
But how does that work when that can only plug into just one of the antenna cables
I understand the extension goes to x2 ports on the router but why only 1 cable from the antenna or are the links wrong showing a splitter on one cable lol that’s confusing a little
Thank you for taking the time to let me know looks like Amazon changed the listing I have now corrected it really appreciated 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld brilliant I was just about to buy it too lol
Cheers Mel.
What can I say I got a lot of gadgets lol 😂
I’m sorry I really don’t know
Just a note - the M1 doesn't support 5G.Only the Netgear M5 and above support 5G
hi, Mel would this ariel work ok with the net gear set up would you no mate Poynting XPOL-1 V2 5G 3dBi Omni-Directional Cross Polarised LTE 2x2 MIMO...
Yes, absolutely
Hi Mel, (great video mate) can I ask how you power the Netgear M1 - does does it it work on 12v, or is it possible to charge it up or something?
It has built in battery and is charged by USB I remove battery and have it plugged in to usb permanently 👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld That great, I really appreciate the reply. I’ve got an MR2100 coming, pretty sure I could do the same.
Hi Mel, very informative video. How does the data work in very busy areas like festivals etc? Im ready to buy the same set up but would it actually make a difference when we have full 4G signal on phone but i assume the transmitter mast is over subscribed if that makes sense.
Thanks
I’m still using it and it’s working perfectly fine 👍
Hi
Just a quick question, which I am confident you can answer.. I have just installed a 4g Wi-Fi system in my old van and it works fine, the problem I have is powering the router, it runs down, even tho I have it connected to a leisure battery via 12v plug when in use… 🤔 is there any way I can power as I am using?? Thanks 🙏🏻
I’m really sorry I don’t understand what you are asking
@@BigVanSmallWorld Hi Mel not the best English was it!! I have sorted it now, Thank you for replying to my ramble!!! All the best 👍🏻
Nice vid.... For me, i got a signal booster i wanna try out in my SUV.... I live in an area where i get sketchy signal some times so yeah... Not installed yet tho 🤣
Get on it 😂👍
Hi Mel,
i've just bought one of these routers.

Great stuff again Mal🍻
Thank you buddy stay safe 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel great video as always i was going to give you a call but I didn't want you to fall off the roof LOL!!!
Thank you I really appreciate your thoughtfulness 😂👍
hi mel does a little sim card from a mobile phone fit in the net gear router can you tell me pls
That’s correct 👍
Hi Mel I have the same M1 router, how do you keep it charged? have you hard wired it in ?
It’s rite next to my USB ports I simply keep it plugged in I unplugged it for this video to show the antenna 👍
Hi what's the type of external antenna,?
Hiya Mel enjoying your Vlogs thanks for taking the time to explain, just got this setup from your amazon account, the code got the aerial don't work have you another code probably could find one myself but getting you your bit of commission 😀 cheers Stuart 🍻
Nice one! it looks like they stopped selling them try this one its my first one just as good amzn.to/3em2Qze
Hi Mel what’s ee like in France any idea for the rooter
I’m sorry I don’t really know I’ve not been over to try it out yet 👍
Not a short comment follows.. Great video, although a little confusing in your wording, unless things have different meanings over there to here, The router and your phone are using cellular data, and your router is sending / Communicating that data wirelessly to your device, i:E Computer or tablet. Wi-Fi has a limited range, cellular data does not. Example you say Wifi external antenna when its a cellular external antenna, Your wording suggests that the router is RECEIVING its signal wirelessly. And with this comment I should get 'Troll of the week" Keep up the great work. Norman
That’s really good point I’m not a IT expert as you can tell thank you for the correction really appreciated I wouldn’t say you was a troll 👍🤓👍
Thanks Mel. Really good video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the encouragement really appreciated 🙏🤓👍
Hi Mel your video is a little misleading the little adapter cable u used is a sma to ts9 adapter and you need one because your poynting arial lead won't fit your router you need the adapter lead you telling people you bought because its more bendy basically and one more thing I think you have been watching to much American TV Americans call routers the way you do but over here we say it like rooter I know that's spelt wrong it's how it sounds good vid tho I have same system spot on
I’m a cockney that’s spent a lot of time in australia I make no apologies for the way I talk
Everyday’s a school day Mel
Ee and virgin and 3 all use the same signal masts aka network
You've been watching too many Americans - we pronounce it rooter here in the UK 😀
😂😂🤷♂️
Agree with your recommendation on Netgear Nighthawk but not on Network provider.
Vodafone outclasses both EE and 3 for UK coverage.
Will be interesting when 5G is operating once all 5G masts are installed.
You can get unlimited data on three network for £11 mth business. I'm in business & so are you Mel. Think you said you were paying £30 mth. And I find three is much better for data
I’m with 3 and EE 👍
hi Mel off the top of your head how many gigs of data would you roughly use in one month reason I asked is Plusnet only do a 50gig a month on a 30day contract and would that be enough data as Plusnet uses the EE network
I have absolutely no idea as I have unlimited WiFi due to always on line
What happened to Mel and this is my world 😁
Just trying to keep the intro as sort as possible 👍🤓👍

I have just bought a router and an EE sim but - we only go away a few times a year so is there a way that I can avoid paying 30 quid a month and just buy say 30/50Gb of data and when it runs out, I buy more, even if it is say, 6 months later?
You will need to ask EE
The comparison of upload speed is misleading as on landline the upload speed is capped to a max of 20Mbs
All I know is it’s quicker than land line
Videos are too dark now,
but still great content.
