HOT GARBAGE! Mortal Kombat, Gameboy VS Gamegear. Which dumpster fire is better?

- Ahh Mortal Kombat, ya gotta love it. Remember when you were a kid and your parents bought you Mortal Kombat for Gameboy or Game Gear? I sure do and lemme tell ya, I have no idea why I was so excited back then 😂 so which one was better? Well this was a (insert sarcasm here) tough comparison. Let’s take a look at both versions and determine once and for all which version you could care less about… I mean which version was better!
Enjoy! Игры
It's crazy how much better MK2 was on Game Boy, and then even crazier how awful MK3 was.
The only one worse than MK3 on gameboy was MK4. It looks like Atari… not sure why they bothered.
I loved MK2 on Gameboy. As good as you can ask for on a Gameboy. I can't understand how they messed up with all the other games on GB
@Deaino313 They were probably rush to market. Even worst is that MK3 and MK4 are 6 button games so implementing that to handheld are difficult, so difficult the Game Gear doesn't even had a port of MK4.
I love mk3 for gameboy, I know a lot of people hate, but I like it
I had a lot of fun with MK1 on my Game Gear, and remember opening the handheld in my kitchen and putting on MK1 for the first time!
MK2 on the Gameboy was one of my favourite. I am happy that you are talking about these games, please do a playthrough of MK Unchained on the PSP
Thanks for the comment, I’ll get to that one 👊🏼
The first time I ever saw a fatality performed was on this version. My friend Joe was playing it at recess in the sixth grade as a few of us watched. His round was coming to a close as Scorpion and, as the rest of us were egging him on to do one of the finishing moves, he confessed he didn't know any yet. As he landed the final hit before the "Finish Him" command came up, one of the older kids in the group said "block, up, up". He quickly did as he was told and did the fire fatality. We all lost our minds and started shouting. It was the coolest thing we'd ever seen. RIP, Joe. I miss you, pal.
Genesis blood code was ABACABB.
The best part about playing MK on my Gameboy, was playing it for 5 minutes before switching it out for Zelda: Link's Awakening
Oh hell yeah, I bought a Switch just for the remake of Zelda, no joke. That’s my favourite Gameboy game of all time! 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion Nice!
First off... wow you beat Mortal Kombat on the game gear before the batteries ran out, impressive! Second.. that F1 Racing game in the background for the GB looks so dang good. So impressive what they cold pull off on such limited hardware.
F1 Race was not me of my favourites on the system. I remember playing it on my friends Gameboy Colour on the way to Myrtle Beach for vacation one year, it was awesome 😊
@@BushyStallion
ever play Race Drivin on Game Boy? it ain't excellent but it's surprisingly competent down to the semi 3D graphics !
@@BushyStallionhey Darryl Lao , the GB MK had 3 -fight zones and GG version MK has only 2-fight zones, , , on GB MK Sonya , Scorpion and Liu Kang had arcade accurate Fatalities , , , , Kool odd side note on Game Gear version the music track that plays as you ascend the fight- ladder , , it's the music that plays on Arcade version when you lose and let the continued insert coin screen wear out getting failure end screen while camera slowly pans down columns of the pit stage , again its the failure music with tempo slight more peppy , ,😸👍👍👍
I played MK on game gear all the time. Parents wouldn't allow home console with MK due to the fatalities thanks to mainstream news. Game gear allowed me to secretly play MK and decapitate.
Indeed, however in my case it was a funny situation that our parents made us clear that what we see in the game just stays in the game, and my siblings and I respected that and we never got issues with Mortal Kombat fatalities and that stuff despite the violence, but again, it was because we got very clear that we only leave that at the game and never take it too seriously.
i dropped a leg on my cousin from my 2nd story window who was outside on a few piled matresses.
i thought all of us 80s 90s kids tried to emulate the screen?
Crazy how violent our parents thought this game was back in the day lol mine were the same at first, hence why I had the Gameboy version first.
Mk2 on gameboy was impressive back then and also on gamegear I like them both
As long as it had blood, that was the one I thought was the absolute coolest 😅
That "Alllright" you do at the start has stuck in my head to the point where everytime I do something around the house I'll rub my hands together and say "Alllllright" 🤣🤣
Yesterday I was nobody. Today I’m the “Alllllright” guy, I’VE NEVER FELT SO ALIVE!! 😂😂 glad it’s stuck in your head and you say it around the house, that’s hilarious. Thanks for the comment my friend 👊🏼
For me it has to be "Shang fun" 😅
I really love the GG version; it was my first MK and, in my opinion, its a very decent port: good graphics, good sound, decent controls and, of course, BLOOD.
Yeah you’ll see at the end of the video I actually do like the Game Gear version, it was well done and on a small screen it was even better. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
Glad you break down the games to different categories 🐉
Great review, I had a lot of fun watching this! :)
Thanks Paulie I appreciate the comment! 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion ...You're Welcome :)
I actually enjoyed the GameBoy version.
I did also… back in the day 👊🏼
I like how that in th GG verssion for memory reasons they left out shang tsung's 'hit in the groin animation', and then forgot to prevent Johnny Cage from doing his low blow attack, meaning the game crashes if you manage to land it.
Wow I actually never knew you could hit Tsung with the nut punch. I thought you could only do it in MKII going forward. Always think the nut punch only works on the default roster, not the boss characters as I could never hit it on Kintaro or Shao Kahn in MKII.
@@VOAN Yes he keeps his hand down for bosses and female fighters
I had the game gear version, I remember it being okay enough but it didn't really leave a huge impression. I played it mostly on SNES...tried to convince myself that it was decent lol.
I lost a lot of hours on the Game Gear version, especially making weird Game Genie codes for it.
I had the Game Gear version.
Never forgot the blood code. 2 1 2 Down Up
Good memories!
What system are using to play those retro games on your tv? I see you have NBA Jam and F1 racing on the tv
I wonder, if given 1 MB (8 megabits) of ROM and competent coders, the GB and GG could do nearly spot-on versions of MK 1 and 2?
Someone should try to program a Gameboy version with these specs, I’d love to see what can be done.
@@BushyStallion Same. MK2 only used a quarter of that, far as I can tell - with 1 MB I can't imagine there isn't enough room for all the characters, all the finishers, and at least _some_ more stages.
There's a Game Boy cartridge out there that had both MK1 and MKII on it. My complain is why they couldn't just use that same cart to polish one of those game as it seem to had storage and memory to get both on there.
Yeah MK on Gameboy was my first version too, lol! In my opinion, i think they did the best they could with what they had. And when i think back, that these games released 31 freaking years ago, i think its kind of impressive. My only complaint was the Gameboy version didnt have Johnny Cage! But that could just be my nostalgia talking!
In my opinion:
Better music = Game Boy (GB had more beeps than GG)
Better controls = Game Gear (GB controls are like moving on water)
Better graphics = Game Gear (colors are better than peasoup graphics)
Better gameplay = Game Gear (plays more smoother than GB)
Better contents = Game Boy (seem to had more than GG)
Better surprises = Game Boy (I love the addition of Goro more than just having blood)
Better game = Game Gear (GG all the way, GB I can't return to)
Game Boy: 3/7
Game Gear: 4/7
Winner = Game Gear version (solid controls and smooth gameplay are the meat of any game, got those two right, and the game is instant gold even if the graphics and contents are decent or lackluster)
by the way, one last question before i go, which fortress level do you like better or more difficult for you, The Pit, PIT II, PIT 3, The Lost Bridge ( i almost forgot PIT II&3 Combination, also - then to be known as " THE lost bridge, and my opinion still is - which cheats r us mode do you like more, kool,kool-er, scott's stuff or sound menu, for SNES, MK3& Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - The Ultimate Fighting Games, Rated M For Mature ( Ages 17 + Content Rated By The ESRB ) and better product to own, SNES or Sega Genesis, because of the way more credits ( 095, i play as Motaro, and Enable Shao Kahn, and Smoke, controls, for the dark temple, construction made subway, and real life bell tower with spikes are , thanks man : ) take care, have a nice day man :) - peace
That's like comparing poop and puke. There is no winner. 🤣
Lol Game Gear version was actually pretty good
Game Gear easily win this but it had to do a lot of sacrificing of feature to get there.
that 45 minute battery life is no exaggeration. Lol how did that even make it to market with that kind of battery life?
Game gear battery life is about the same as a Sony PSP. The issue is 6 AA batteries is expensive. I had a rechargeable battery pack on mine and if I was playing at home just used the Genesis AC Adapter.
@@mrjfrostbite you could get about 4 1/2 hours on a psp. A game gear legit would kill some Duracells in just under 1 hour
Should be a fun watch lol good afternoon
I grow up playing MK1 in Master System, very similar to Game Gear version. I will always have fond memories about, specialy the music.
Basically the same game, yep 👍🏼
Unlike Europe, the Sega Master System is basically almost non-existent here in the US which is why they never bring that port over here.
I remember all the remotes in the house were always missing batteries from me taking them to play gamegear 😂
awesome video as always darryl
Thanks Game God 👊🏼
Ima go with game gear version.Remember playn the game gear version as a kid.
Allright............❤ that intro 🔥 GOD HOW THE HELL DID WE EVER PLAY THIS????
Alllright lemme respond to this lol how? Well I’m not sure, but we did and we LOVED it back then.. now, not so much lol thanks for the constant support Mike I appreciate you my man 👊🏼
@BushyStallion your the man bro! Glad to support great people!!!!
I remember as a kid seeing a screenshot of the GB version in a magazine... and when it's not moving? It's actually pretty impressive for the time. But then, later on at a friend's house?
I PLAYED it and OMFG...
Thankfully the GB version of MK2 is the BEST 8 bit handheld MK game period. PERFECTLY playable and actually FUN. If only they'd manage to keep that quality with 3 and 4. lol
Considering the limitations and the games availables during that time, I think the game gear port is far from being a "dumpster fire".
This is true 👊🏼
I have the Game Boy version, the Super Nintendo version, the mini arcade that has the Sega Genesis version, and the arcade version. I even have the tiger handheld version as well.
just like you, Mortal Kombat for Nintendo was my first MK game, and I loved it! I still love the 8bit Kombat music. I did hate how slow it was though
The music is awesome lol thanks for the comment 🙏🏽
I have fond memories of playing MK on my OG Gameboy.
….me too.
just here in the comments showing my support as usual, lets see what you cooked up this time darryl.
3:27. Why did they put the spikes on top of the bridge?
Those aren't even spikes, they are hills just like the ones in Mortal Kombat II. They only look small cause they are suppose to be far away.
I think the theme song on gameboy was really accurate and good.
hey darryl, it's mackenzie cole koppanyi from, wpg,MB, Canada, for Sega Consoles - which ones do you like - Classic Game Console ( AT Games Version, or The Flashback - just checkin' :) thanks man :) have a nice day
Darryl, I'd love to see a video of you reacting to Angry Video Game Nerd's video about the Mortal Kombat 1 home ports. It's hilarious.
His videos are amazing, I followed him since he started making videos. The guy is an inspiration!
I remember being little and playing my game gear Mk game on the road connected to the car cigarette lighter adapter lol.
Ahh yes the cigarette lighter charger 😂
In the past, I owned the game boy port, but lacked a home game console, forcing me to play the subpar game boy port. The game gear port would have been more entertaining, but sadly, I never owned one. Nonetheless, I was able to play the arcade port in various arcades.
The Gameboy was rough but I KNOW I loved it when I was younger. When MK2 came out on Gameboy I remember calling my friend and telling him “MORTAL KOMBAT 2 ON GAMEBOY IS F****** AMAZING!” lol good memories
The only thing that the gb version needs is better controls. For some reason, after beating goro, the controls suddenly become more responsive
It also need to be a bit faster, my guess is that the developer made the sprites too large so that slow down the pacing of the match. Had they lower the sprite and animation works a bit they could make it ran smoother like in MKII.
@@VOAN it was probably bad optimization
I miss panasonic AA batteries.
Lol interesting
I only had the Tiger handheld 😭
So sorry my friend lol
At least it had more characters.
All the moves for the two portables have to be tapped in very slowly.
People online: I have over 200 gameboy games!
Me: are there even 10 gameboy games worth owning?
People online: of course there is! *starts listing mortal kombat*
😂😂
There's actually over 1200 games (not counting the Japanese ones) on Game Boy with over 500 ones worth playing and owning. Most are ports but a majority of them are exclusives 1st and 3rd party titles. I would list all of them but here's a list of over the top 30 of the best ones:
1. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
2. Kirby's Dream Land 1 & 2
3. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
4. Samurai Shodown
5. Mortal Kombat II
6. Killer Instinct
7. Donkey Kong (the first 4 levels are from the arcade)
8. Ninja Gaiden Shadows
9. Tetris Attack
10. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
11. King of Fighters 95
12. Operation C
13. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
14. R-Type I & II
15. Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
16. Harvest Moon 1 & 2
17. Donkey Kong Land 1, 2, & 3
18. Wario Blast
19. Final Fantasy Legends 1-3
20. Final Fantasy Adventure
21. TMNT 1, 2, & 3
22. Dr. Mario
23. Klax
24. F1 Race
25. Battle Arena Toshinden
26. Mole Mania
27. Wave Race
28. Q*Bert
29. Dragon Quest I & II
30. World Heroes 2 Jet
31. Snow Bros. Jr.
32. Total Carnage
Some of these games are even better than their console counterparts. Games like Samurai Shodown actually had way more characters and contents than their arcade and consoles.
The Warrior's Shrine music (which is playing during The Pit stage on both ports) is more faithful to the arcade than the Genesis port, at least as far as composition is concerned! But the Gameboy version is in the wrong key 😂 Ahhh Probe, my nemesis.
Tiny Toon Adventures!
I played MK1 at a friend and I remember it sucked. However, I later owned MK2 for my GG and spent countless hours on it. It was a fantastic port given the limitations of the 8-bit consoles. I also bought MK3 later, but that was again horrible like MK1.
If you got MK3 on Game Gear then you are very lucky, that game was only released in Europe. Sad that it was such a terrible port.
Cool
Oh no, not again 😂😂😂😂😂
i was 13 in 2005 when i played it on the Game Boy
What did you think of it?
amazingly, mk3 on gamegear makes these look impeccable.
This is true lol
Doesn't matter which one is "best." I MUST add them both to my kollection.
Though I absolutely recommend "Tournament Edititon" and "Deadly Alliance" for GBA, those are an absolute improvement compared to the GB counterparts.
I... Enjoyed Deadly Alliance in GBA far more than I should have. Looking back on it, it's so silly!
I'd have to see if it has aged well at all.
@@turbochop3300 I played it recently and I think it holds up.
@@RobertChambers1522 It was one of the first games I bought with my own money back in the day. I'm so glad I got that and not Mortal Kombat Advance
GB harpoon back 3 times then punch button🎉😂 GG blood code is 2-1-2 down up , ,
Ahh yes that’s it lol thanks Elf 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion any time man , ,I think we were both totally blown away when MK2 hit our local arcades for the first time and we both regard it as the almost perfect fighting game , ,and we use it to measure the speed and Ai of all fighting games that have been made since , , , 🕹️😸👍👍
I would like to know...why in the shit were they able to put Sub Zero's stance animation onto these versions and not on the fucking Genesis version?
Incompetent developers MK 1&2 by Probe on the Mega Drive were missing loads of animation and sound compared to the Snes version MK3 on Mega Drive showed what it was capable of when sculptured software took over. The fact Probe where always working on 10 projects at a time probably spread them thin too.
Believe me I’ve thought the same thing 👊🏼
@@wizzgamer yeah that makes sense. Mk3 and UMK3 on Genesis are both solid
You had to realize they had to sacrifice character to achieve that on these ports. On the Game Boy version, Johnny Cage is sacrifice whereas in the Game Gear version, Kano is sacrifice. That's cause both games had very little ram memory at the time and if they are going to give Sub-Zero and Scorpion unique stance, they need to save those ram as much as they could. By taking out one character they were able to achieve that but then you get an incomplete roster. In both versions, Reptile and one of the 7 default character were missing.
I can count all those pixels and every frames.
Gamegear is better
Yes!! Love these ports! So bad yet so good! Haha! 🤘🏼🤦🏻♂️
Love that they had their own little surprises too despite how jank they ran. Game Gear version had blood and gore while the Game Boy version had a playable Goro.
I had both systems didn't play much some games Pokémon sonic pinball
It seems SF2 and the MK game boy ports weren’t handled very well.
That's cause at the time devs were not that familiar with the handheld hardware yet. Both handhelds had very little ram memory and limited hardware capability such as less few buttons and control so it's difficult to work around bringing all the bells and whistles from the arcade and console versions of those games to these handhelds.
How could anybody complete these games if the batteries gave out that fast lol? I know you could plug it into the wall but still.
I was able to beat these games in under two hours back then. Game Boy batteries could last over 20 hours and Game Gear batteries last 3-5 hours. You just had to be patience when playing it. Just don't lose too many times cause unlike the Super NES version (which had unlimited credits), these ports only had 6 credits. Lose all 6 and it's Game Over, you're back at the beginning of the first opponent.
Johnny Cage made the Game Gear version?
Yep. In exchange for Kano on Gameboy.
My God, this guy makes sweet sweet love to Mortal Kombat at night. All of them at once, but I can tell MK II is his favorite girl.
😂😂 interesting comment my friend lol
Gameboy version had 3 stages, not 2. Courtyard, Goro’s Lair, Pit. It also had Goro, I don’t think Game Gear had him.
Game Gear version had Goro. He's actually shorter in size on that version.
Yeap Game Gear only had two stages but the game ran a bit faster than the Game Boy version. Also a lot of the input stays true to the arcade on Game Gear whereas most are change on the Game Boy for example Sub-Zero's ice freeze on Game Boy you had to press back and then forward plus kick (yeah I'm not joking it's actually the kick button and not the punch) to do the freeze whereas in the Game Gear version you only had to do motion down forward plus punch instead just like the consoles and arcade versions.
@@VOAN game gear plays soooooo much better than gameboy. When I was a kid I was hyped for the blood, and Johnny Cage. Cool memories.
What’s hilarious about this is I played Mortal Kombat on the Gameboy. I remember at the time being amazed. Boy my childish brain was something else lmao. This is hot garbage looking back
Cause back then there were nothing like it before. Remember aside from the Game Boy and Game Gear versions of Mortal Kombat, the only other handheld port of Mortal Kombat was the Tiger LCD version which is much worst but somehow was able to get all 7 characters plus Goro and Shang Tsung into the game. It's worst cause each character only had two moves and you don't fight all 9 nine characters, just some of them. That's cause if you pick a character from the left side you won't get to fight all the other left side characters (Liu Kang, Sonya, Johnny Cage, and Raiden), only the ones on the right side (Kano, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Goro), and vice-versa.
Though the game had its limitation, it did do something unique that allow characters from both sides to fight Shang Tsung in the end. When the left side characters fought Shang Tsung, he will only shoot fireballs or morph into the characters on the right side only but if you pick a character from the right side, he will only shoot fireballs or morph into characters from the left side only (a cheap and clever way of reusing static sprites imo). Even though Goro is on the right side, you can't pick him just like the arcade, there are no mirror match, no endurance matches, and also no blood and fatalities in the game.
Gameboy version has a way better music imo and Goro as a playable character was a nice addition. On the other hand the gameplay is awful. Game Gear is superior in general.
Of course the game gear going to be slightly better than the Gameboy
GG plats far better . Still crap compared to md snes and arcade but cool in a way yes
I can't believe people bought this shit
😂
I like the gameboy version better...game gear version look weird
What's with saying your t's so strongly?? I had to leave the video because those t's got so cringe
The guy(s) who thought the idea of Mortal Kombat on 8-bit limitized handhelds with only two buttons,
should've been fired.
You've obviously never played MK II on Gameboy it's considered the best portable version of the game and one of the best portable fighters of all time it's excellent 👌
@@wizzgamer
I like my handheld ports arcade-perfect.
Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and 鉄拳TEKKEN are all truly cut-out for the six-button PSP with defined graphics and sounds.
@@wizzgamer Someone should have told those bad people to wait for 2005 before porting a game released in 1992 ! BRILLIANT
Money my friend. These versions sold like hot cookies, because EVERY kid that owned a handheld console wanted them
@@ruicosta1037 But if you were a Sega kid back then and you had rich parents, you don't have to suffer with the Game Gear ports. You could just play the Sega Genesis versions of these games on the go via the Sega Nomad handheld. It's the Nintendo fans that got the cold shoulders at the time when it comes to good handheld Mortal Kombat games.
Thank you for your sacrifice. 🫡
Now, it’s time for Mortal Kombat 2 on GameBoy and Game Gear! 🐉 🔥
