Freighters fly less than passenger jets so they last ones being built right now should still be flying well beyond 30 years, possibly 40 years. Even premier airliners had them in service for 25 years before selling them on. It will be the running costs, maintenance and fuel, which will finally catch up with them as who knows what new commercial/freighter jets will be flying in 2050 and beyond. There are still many MD-11's in the freighter fleets, but it will be a loss to aviation fans when all we have left are twin engine jets, they hardly stir the soul like a multi engine jet.
I sure hope to see 747s gracing the world's airport 20 or 30 plus years from now. There is nothing quite line seeing the majestic queen of the skies taxiing out or on final approach to create a child-like excitement! Long live the queen!!!!
There is no aircraft that is more unique and iconic then the 747. Add to that, the fact that it could be in service for close to or over 100, yes, 100 years!
No big surprise that the 747F is still going strong. Back in the 60s, it was thought that passenger air traffic would move on to SSTs. Boeing was covering their bases with the 747 program and designed it to be an excellent freighter to avoid having a white elephant should SST supplant passenger jetliners. And while SSTs have yet to become viable, the market has moved away from quad jet Jumbos & the Hub-and-Spoke networks model to smaller twinjets and more point-to-point flights
Given my disappointment with the (understandable) decline in 747 passenger usage, this pleases me. Got to see a nice view of a Korean Air Cargo 747-8F flying over a couple weeks ago.
I don’t think they should STOP making the queen of the skies! Keep building the iconic 747! It’s the most recognized plane in the world. Movies, songs, private, etc. it’s the best airplane ever!!!
747 was based on a cargo plane design in the beginning. That is why it is so good at it today. Loosing to Lockheed for what became the C-5, Boeing's design had an opening front and "hump" above.
Boeing was expecting SSTs to be the future, so they developed the 747 for use as a cargo aircraft from the beginning. While they guessed wrong on one, the other more than made up for it.
Yes, consider how much DC-10, MD-11, and even DC-8 freighters are still flying, the 747 will continue to fly in the cargo variant or retrofit , for years to come.
Not really. The 747 was originally designed and flown as a military aircraft in the early 1960’s. He took that design and turned into a passenger aircraft in a couple of years. Most of the heavy lifting had already been done and funded by the US government by a lost military contract
In 20-30 years unlikely, maybe special versions. My question, is there a viable alternative ? 747 has the advantage of having cockpit high. Could there be a 2 engine version of the 747, believe the aerodynamics is good, so with modern materials is it viable
I really hope either Boeing or Airbus makes a new big freighter like the 747F because although widebody passenger aircraft aren't popular at the moment, widebody freighters are and I believe will be popular in the coming years
Hope that the Queen can fly for more 20 or 30 years in future and maintain the unshakable position as a freighter which any Airbus aircraft cannot come close with it.👍
Airbus really missed a trick when they designed the A380 ! They were so short sighted when they designed the type to not design a cargo variant or to have a cargo conversion plan when we see so many larger aircraft seeing out their end of life as cargo planes. When you look at an A380, there is no good way to load the aircraft with freight. Impossible to have a raising or swinging nose but maybe an option for a rear fold down cargo door ?
